rocked by an earthquake. it was 5.8 north of the city of bolog bologna. there are reports some buildings collapsed but no reports of injuries. nine days ago a quake killed seven people damaging hundreds of buildings. texas primary voters are all but sure to give romney enough delegates to assure the republican presidential nomination. he's been campaigning for weeks attacking president obama and romney is back on the campaign trail today. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning with more. romney is right on the brink of clinching that nomination in texas. we'll do it for him today. meanwhile he used memoir yeah day to promise he'll maintain the strongest military in the world just as the president planned to downsize it. after months of primaries and

caucuses, romney will likely pass the 1, 144 delegates needed when texas voters go to the p l polls. the former massachusetts governor returns to the campaign trail after appearing at a memorial day service in san diego. he has been critical of the president's plan to downsize the military and appeared to take another shot without meaning his rival. >> we have two courses to follow. follow in the path way of europe. to shrink our military smaller and smaller to pay for our social needs. >> reporter: congressional republicans and the white house have agreed to cut $487 billion in defense spending over the next decade. the plan includes removing u.s. troops from afghanistan by the end of 2014. american solars are no longer in iraq. >> after a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon. >> reporter: a new poll shows

veterans prefer romney over president obama, but veterans also supported john mccain and his failed bid for the presidency. now, even with the proposed defense cuts, the u.s. would still remain the world's dominant military power by far. terrell. >> all right. susan mcginnis in washington this morning. susan, thank you. the president remembered the nation's military heroes on memorial day. mr. obama placed the wreath at the tomb of the unknown. he told a crowd of vietnam veterans they were sometimes denigrated when they should have been celebrated. the president called the way they were treated a disgrace that should have never happened. across the country yesterday there were parades honoring america's war it dead. the portsmouth parade is the oldest continuous memorial day parade. the tropical depression beryl now. beryl is now 165 miles southwest of savannah, georgia, and is expected to move back over the

atlantic ocean by tomorrow. but november florida, parts of georgia and south carolina could see up to 10 inches of rain. beryl barreled ashore yesterday on the north carolina. thousands lost power and through was minor flooding but no deaths reported. in michigan's upper peninsula a wildfire burned about a dozen buildings and vacation homes and cabins. more than 22,000 acres have been burned but no injuries have been reported. rain held firefighters' efforts but strong winds pushed that fire along. overseas, escalated violence in egypt. yesterday protesters set fire to the cairo campaign headquarters of the campaign manager. he was hosni mubarak's last campaign minister. he'll face off in a runoff election next month. u.n. kofi annan met. he's trying to end the bloody

bloodshed. russia is taking a hard line. the former minister says assad bears the main responsibility for what is going on. bob orr reports. >> reporter: the wave of killings in syria was condemned by america's top military auchlts joint chief's chairman martin dempsey. >> what occurred over the weekend was horrific, atrocious. i expect that pressure will mounltd. >> reporter: pressure so far has failed to budge president bashar whose ignored repeated calls by president obama to step down. >> it's important for the international community to rally and send a clear message it times for a transition and time nar regime to move on. >> reporter: international economic sapgss are biting hard. syria's oil minister estimates the country has lost $4 billion

in the nine months since the sanctions took effect.& u.s. is also supplying humanitarian aid and communications aimed at helping the opposition groups but the u.s. has not provided weapons to the rebels. there's no sign. >> we'll be prepared to provide options if asked to do so. >> reporter: for now the u.n. is asked to provide plans. the plan does not skplesicily call for assad to leave. the obama administration says there's no disconnection between its calls for assad to leave. it addresses all of the needs of the syrian people would result in assad's ouster. questions about building safety and cutter this morning after a fire at an upscale shopping mall killed 19 people

the starnd adjuster on the campus of southern methodist university has ended. cbs fail yacht in dallas says the man has fallen to his death. he had been inside the cattle of the construction crane 100 feet high since monday morning. we say the man is a suspect in a robbery. the school was between semesters so no students were in danger. congress machb barney frank made son controversial statements regarding trayvon martin's shooting at a graduation ceremony. he said jones played a major role in diminishing inequality in massachusetts. then he said this. >> i'm particularly pleased that he got an honorary degree today. when you get an honorary degree and i think you have a shootie and no one will shoot at you.

so you'll feel protected by that. >> he was referring to the hoodie they von martin was wearing the night he shot. he didn't mean to offend and has made that joke at over events. a social networking smartphone. ashley morrison is here with that and more. good morning, terrell. markets overseas got a bump up after trying to boost the stimulus. hong kong's hang seng added more than 1%. this week we'll get the may unemployment report and the latest numbers on home sails. traders returned to wall street after the markets were closed for memorial day. stocks were up for the week. the dow added 85 points while the nasdaq gained 58. the largest collapse of a u.s. law firm is abu complete. duey lebeouf filed last week. they owe their creditors $245 million. concern over their debt caused

several partners to leave since the beginning of the year. the firm will keep about 90 of its employees while it liquid e liquidates its assets. >> another strange twist in the britain's phone hacking scandal. the heckler called blair a war criminal but the bombshell came when blair admitted that he could not stand up to britain's media while he was in office. and facebook might be getting into the mobile phone business. according to "the new york times," the social media company has hired more than half a dozen hardware and software engineers who worked on apple's iphone. facebook has reportedly tried to develop a smartphone in the past. the company has not officially mobile device. but, terrell, that would certainly be interesting to see what that is about. >> we thenk we're already distracted with cell phones? add a facebook cell phone. >> oh, boy. and two sisters in

night. to baseball, chris sail of the white sox has a monster game against the race. he struck out a career high 15 allowing just one run on three hits. chicago and tampa bay. bad news for the angels. their ace, jered weaver left in the third inning after injuring his back against the yankees. good news in the bottom of the ninth when there's game-winning walk-off homer. l.a. stuns new york. and a surprise. he appears on the scoreboard. then he runs out of the dugout and surprises his family. i love it. his wife and four kids can't believe he's home. cement six months in afghanistan and came home a week early. as far as the game, cards pitcher lance strikes out eight as st. louis crushes atlanta, 8-2. and a real cinderella story. they finished at number one.

here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. d.c., afternoon thunderstorms, 87. thunderstorms and 86 in atlanta. morning showers, 88 in st. louis. partly sunny 71 in denver and partly sunny and 64 in seattle. a surprise find along the california coast. bluefin tuna with radiation levels ten times higher than the amount usually found in those fish. they carried radioactive cesium from japan's crippled nuclear plant 6,000 miles away. each with the elevated radiation

levels they're still considered safe to eat. for 30 years marines and their families at camp lejeune drank and bathed in contaminated water. many are now sick with cancer and many o'illnesses. mark strassmann tells us making matters worse, they have to fight the administration making matters worse. >> there i am. >> wow. >> reporter: frank served 26 years in the marines. he was stayinged at camp lejeune, north carolina, between 1977 and 19786 when the water run days was toxic. he now has stage 4 kidney cancer. >> in what ways did you thing you were exposed? >> well, i took showers aboard the base, drafrmg water aboard the base on daily basis. it was obvious to me i was a prime candidate for someone who had been, you know, poisoned by the drinking water aboard camp le jooum june. >> reporter: fuel and chemicals

had seeped into the water system for 30 years. the navy shut down the water system in 1987. multiple studies have concluded the water was highly contaminated. chemicals like benzine, pce and tce were as high as 280 times heater than the level considered healthy. they say those levels can cause leukemia, blader, kidney, and breast cancer. >> what's the status of the cancer now? >> right now i have incurrable, inoperable cancer. i'm terminal. >> reporter: he filed a claim as a service-related illness. that would provide his wife ruth with an extra $1,100 a month in survivor benefits. >> i want to make sure she's taken care of when i'm gone. >> reporter: that's your number one worry. >> that's my number one worry. >> reporter: the v.a. has denied 71 of these claims. 1 rkds 200 more cases are

pending. no one from the v.a. would go on camera but a statement says scientific and clinical evidence is not sufficient to establish an association between service ott camp lejeune and any subsequent development of any particular diseases. >> the doctor told me in november that without a doubt this is what caused your cancer. he was convinced and he wroetd me the linking letter. >> reporter: the letter that linked his cancer to his exposure at camp lejeune convinced the v.a. on february 22nd, his claim was approved but he worries about sikma reens still waiting. >> you would like to think their number one priority would be taking care of the troops and that's what i always believed happened. >> reporter: congressional reports estimate that frank was one of nearly 1 million members who drank camp lejeune's toxic water. mark strassmann, cbs news, jacksonville, north carolina. coming up after your local

it's july. >> it's july in may. we're wrapping up the month with a warm morning. you'll feel the mugginess as you step out this morning. the forecast for today is going to feature a little bit of a change but the second half of the day. our day planner keeps things on the warm side. temperatures are up there in the 70s and we're going to continue on up. midday today, we should have plenty of sunshine and get the temperatures into the middle, even push the upper 80s by about 4:00. but between 4:00 and 5:00, that's when that cold front gets close enough to cause a little bit of trouble us for. we're expecting to develop showers and thunderstorms moving closer into our region later on today and that will affect us into the overnight tonight. right now 74 out in vienna. we have 74 in springfield. about 73 up toward bethesda. it's going to be muggy and sticky and steamy for the next day or two till the front moves on through but the seven-day forecast will feature a bit of

life and legacy of chuck brown and really say thanks for what he did for washington, d.c. lots of activity here outside the howard theatre. we can see police are here and some folks are actually setting up tents. we're still seven hours away from the beginning of this public viewing, but they are anticipating a very large turnout, more than 30,000 people in fact are expected to come to the howard theatre filing in later today to say their final goodbye to the father of go-go. coincidentally he was scheduled to perform here at the how prd theatre -- howard theatre april 21. he was very excited about returning in april. unfortunately we know he passed before he could see that dream come true. but, he was supposed to perform here. folks are coming back here to say their final goodbyes and it will be a
