tonight. we'll also kick up showers and thunderstorms as well. day planner features a lot of sunshine through midday and late afternoon. i think we'll be just fine. no problems for your lunch break and even the beginning of that drive time, say about 4:00, 5:00 we should be okay. then the showers and thunderstorms start to move on through. right now it is feeling like it is definitely in those middle range and upper 70s. we're going to see temperatures hover right around the 90- degree mark for highs today. for tomorrow definitely into those upper 80s. not quite 90 but things will change behind that front. back down into the 70s for thursday and the extended forecast is looking good friday into saturday. we tend to ease things out and move off the moisture, just in time for a quiet weekend ahead. good morning, everybody. in alexandria on telegraph road just south of north kings highway, you want to be aware of a water main break closing down the roadway. so be aware of that. again in alexandria. otherwise we're looking pretty good for tuesday morning. no problems to report on the

dulles toll road coming in from the airport or 66 in from manassas. we'll take a live look at 66 at the fairfax county parkway and on the inbound side of i-66 we'll go out live. no problems to report. all lanes are open as you head for vienna and the beltway. the beltway is looking great through annandale and springfield. let's go back over to the maps and this time to the other side of town. route 50 inside the beltway through cheverly is fine. no problems on the prince george's county side of the beltway and coming in from southern maryland, no issues. we'll take a look at route 50 coming in from sandy point, the bay bridge no problems all the way inbound to the beltway. in my next report, we'll go to the north side of town at 5:09. he made generations of d.c.'s music fans and he made them smile. in just a few hours, people are going to have a chance to pay their respects to chuck brown. >> the godfather of go-go died earlier this month after being hospitalized for several weeks. he was 75. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the site of today's viewing, the howard

theatre. good morning, delia. are we seeing anything happening getting ready for what's going to happen in just a few hours? >> reporter: we're certainly still a few hours away but lots of work is being done. take a look we can see that some barriers, some guards have already been put up for the 30,000 people who are expected to come. we're told those folks are supposed to line down c street here and wrap around 7th street. so you can see there are guards already in place for the folks to line up. we have some tents setting up, some folks setting up tents at this point and foods trucks. certainly lots of activity to get ready for what is expected to be a very big day here in washington, d.c. as i said, more than 30,000 fans expected to file into the howard theatre to say goodbye. chuck brown was d.c. in a farewell ceremony scheduled for stand and thursday -- for today

and thursday certainly fitting for a man who did so much for d.c. we'll see 200-foot monitors with a video montage running continuously of brown's performances along with his guitar that will also be on display. the family we're told has asked in lieu of flowers that fans actually donate to his foundation. they're working on a nonprofit status right now but his foundation according to the website is geared toward helping with the homelessness and helping with folks who are trying to reintroduce themselves into site after being incarcerated. we know that was very dear to chuck brown's heart because we know that he spent some time behind bars himself as a young person and literally reinvented himself when he got out of prison. he changed his last name, used his mother's maiden name i should say and literally taught himself how to play guitar and

turned to music. we're told that he actually swapped cigarettes in jail for his first guitar. so that became what prompted this if you life that chuck brown lived and the many decades of happiness that he gave to folks here in washington, d.c. so he certainly embodying that spirit of washingtonians and many, many will be here today to say thank you to the man who meant so much to them. so of course 30,000 people expected to attend. it's going to be very packed here. lots of streets are being shut down so everyone is recommended to take metro. we'll have much more coming up in a half-hour. back to you. >> delia goncalves. what a great story. thank you, delia. to people are dead after a mid airplane collision in fauquier county, virginia. one of the small planes plummeted right into a wooded area after the impact, caught fire killing both people on board. the pilot of the other plane

even after the crash was able to land in a nearby field. one of the wings even fell off and still was able to land. one neighbor arrived home to find the crash light. >> it's about 16 feet long, part of a right wing, a small plane. you can see where the fire department had put the fire out on the ground. >> two bodies were recovered from that part of the fiery crash scene. a surviving pilot was taken to a hospital in fredricksburg. we're not sure of his condition but at one point he was conscious and speaking to investigators. police in ocean city, maryland are investigating the death of a man from cooksville. witnesses say a group of people was crossing coastal highway yesterday when a speeding vehicle slammed into 22-year- old matthew cheswick and kept going. cheswick later died at the

hospital. the driver is a man from lorton, virginia. he faces multiple charges. tropical storm beryl made landfall in florida. lifeguards had to rescue dozens of people from the strong surf. there were red flag warnings for dangerous rip currents. that meant no swimming beyond waist deep water for many people. hopefully the winning ways will return on wall street. here's jess. >> we are hoping that that will be the case. we're starting to see the clouds part after ugly weeks of stocks. we're seeing some optimism emerge good the situation in greece of all places.

5:0. welcome back. i'm olga breese. the day planner has lots of sunshine but as we head into late day, we'll fill in some clouds cover. rain continues into the overnight until the cold front passes through. monika? olga, we're going to take a look live in southern maryland on route 4 coming out of solomons oracle cal, mid-- or california, maryland. everything is running smoothly. in my next report a look closer at 5:17. making news now at 5:10 this morning, authorities say 13 children are dead after a fire at one of the country's fanciest shopping malls. most of the children killed were trapped in a child care center in doha, qatar. amazingly no one was hurt when debris from a plane rained down on toronto, ontario. canadian authorities are focusing their sights on a

flight from tokyo which made an emergency landing. it damaged a number of cars. they suffer with sickness and now some residents are going to get paid. the associated press reports a deal has been reached involving the court claims over fema- issued trailers. the settlement was expanded to include more companies who manufactured, installed and refush squished those -- refurbished those trailers that were found to have toxic fumes in them. raising children is tough enough. at 5:57 we honor one family in an organization that helps them out in today's hero central. the nats have a new second place team to friend off in their division. that's -- fend off in their vision. that's coming up. we have a cooldown headed this way in the seven-day forecast. olga breese will tell us about that when we come back. canceled. >> that's what happens when we have all that daytime heating. today will be no different. later on this afternoon, don't be fooled by the morning. late in the day we could start to see thunderstorms rumbling on through. we're off to a calm and quiet start minus the humidity that we have working with us. sunshine will stick around through midday and early afternoon about the 4:00, 5:00 hour. you'll notice the clouds start to filter through and then the storms will start to approach from the west. around 5:00 or 6:00 we'll definitely see more widespread storm action in and around the region and that's going to allow our temperatures to peak into the upper 80s, 90 degrees but then that will be it. then you'll be a little bit rain cooled with some of the rain moving into the overnight period as well. our camera, the rooftop camera looking pretty good right now. we definitely have the opportunity to see the southwest winds build in more moisture so the mugginess is definitely going to stick with us for the next several hours.

in fact, the front does not cross till later on tonight. so things will look better in that extended forecast. future cast keeps us in the clear. high pressure starting to move off shore. that's clearing the way for the cold front. as the front moves on through, it will start to kick up some showers and thunderstorms mainly in the mountain regions. i think we'll get the heavier rains there but still an opportunity for some minimal rainfall coming in through the washington metro area but most of that intensity is going to stay off in toward the mountains. it will be a little wet and messy coming home tonight but then things will improve. behind the front we start to clear out nicely and we're looking good for the remainder of your wednesday and into the thursday forecast as the nats get back into town. the forecast for today will take us to the upper 80s, near 90 degrees in town. tonight another muggy one. in fact, as the moisture starting to move on through, we could see some areas of patchy fog as you step out tomorrow morning. but for the rainfall overnight tonight, again not too much. less than half an inch region wide. the next three days hot today, hot tomorrow, and we'll keep it

fairly warm for wednesday, but behind that front much cooler temperatures moving on through. in fact, we're looking good from friday with a slight rain chance late in the afternoon but saturday and sunday should be a quite nice weekend wrapping up and as we get into monday, we start to ease back into the upper 70s and, yes, we'll have another warm-up in our long range forecast. monika? >> thank you so much, olga. the latest information over at alexandria on eisenhower avenue near the van dorn metro station is that one lane is open in each direction. authorities had been dealing with a building fire in that area so it may slow you down a bit with all that can't aift -- that activity there. southbound 270 looks fine out of frederick. all rapes are open and traffic is still moving very well -- all lanes are open and traffic is still moving very well. we'll take a live look outside right now and here's what it looks like in clarks burke at route 121 as you can see. a little bit of a traffic stop on the northbound side but that's not going to affect your ride heading southbound this morning.

definitely going to stay dry. want to let you know in alexandria inside the beltway, eisenhower avenue is closed between the van dorn street metro and eisenhower connector because of a building fire. if you're planning to head over on the west side of town, no problems on the dulles toll road or 66 heading for the beltway. we'll go outside live and if you're planning to head here on the northbound side of 95, no problems to report coming through springfield on to 395 or the beltway through annandale. we'll go further north on 395 at duke street and that's also looking good as you head north on 395 on our vdot camera. no problems to report here up towards seminary road and the 14th street bridge. all lanes are open this morning. in my next report, we will take a look at maryland roads at 5:38. >> thank you, monika. the national transportation safety board is investigating a deadly plane crash in fauquier county, virginia. >> two planes collided in mid area over the community of bealeton. there was a surviving pilot.

he was able to make an emergency landing in a nearby field. that was despite losing a wing off his plane. he's hospitalled in fredricksburg right now. both people on the second plane however died when that plane crashed into a wooded area and then caught fire. expect big crowds around the howard theatre today. the viewing for chuck brown starts later this morning. generations of fans are expected to pay their respects to the godfather of go-go. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the theatre with a preview. how many people are they expecting throughout the day? >> reporter: we're told they're hearing anything from 3,000 to 30,000. and it could exceed that number so certainly lots of folks are coming in. we know family will have a private viewing from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and then 11:00 a.m. the doors open for his thousands of fans who will come to say their final goodbyes. we've been telling you all morning and really since chuck brown passed a couple of weeks ago that the man chuck brown meant much more than just music

and go-go to the folks here in d.c. here to talk more about that is natalie, a transplant like myself. i guess we could call you an aficionado of go-go because you've written a book. tell me a little bit about your book and why you wrote it. >> it's go-go live. i wrote it because i started writing as a journalist about the go-go scene in the late '90s and ended up -- had many questions about it. it's amazing, wonderful, vibrant community. i did my ph.d. at the university of maryland on the subject of go-go. the book is an adaptation. i'm really sad that chuck is not around for -- it just doesn't seem right that the book is coming out and he's not here with us. i thought he would be with us for ever. >> i think everyone did. it hit folks by surprise. he was so vibrant. that's really what the music embodied, this liveliness and

energy. i was telling you a story about being at the public gardens in the '90s and hearing go-go for the first time. it's that energy. tell me why you think it never crossed over and became big anywhere else? it was so specific to d.c. >> go-go is unique -- well, maybe not unique but the one thing that characterizes go-go is the audience is part of the band. there's a lot of call and response, there are hand gestures, dance styles. there's all kinds of things going on in a live performance which makes it pretty difficult to translate in other context. if the audience hasn't grown up on it, it's hard for them to know what to do. typically if you're in the live environment like you were at public gardens, you're going to understand it because you can't miss the feeling. >> reporter: and it grows on you. it's an acquired taste if you're not local but you can certainly appreciate what go-go means to native washingtonians and the fact that chuck brown like i said had a picture with

just about every one. i think the city paper even had a cover with every single picture and a friend of mine was actually in there. my husband has a picture with him. i don't but seems like everyone does. this is a man who came back to the community and loved his fans. >> he loved people. there are a lot of celebrities who might keep people at arm's length. that wasn't chuck. i spoke to a photographer who was documenting his last months and he said that he had sort of gotten together -- he decided to stay up until he signed every single person's autograph in the club. he was 75 years old at the club not signing autographs till other people are done. so that's chuck. >> reporter: we're going to talk with you much more coming up in another half-hour. natalie is going to be here with us for the remainder of the morning show. we'll have much more about chuck brown's live, legacy, and the history of go-go and the future of go-go when we come back. back to you, andrea.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it is 5:47 on this tuesday morning. back to work for a lot of people but no relief from the heat we endured over the weekend. >> not even 6:00 it's 76 degrees. >> it's hot. >> you'll need water. >> it's not budging at all. it's going to be a very hot, humid and sticky morning, even into the early afternoon i think we're still going to feel the effects of this high pressure system with us and the moist southwesterly winds. things will improve, though, because the cold front is on the way and we will get some relief but we'll have to wait about 24 hours for it to really kick in. the day planner this morning will require a lot of sunshine. you want to be prepared for that as we head out and about today. midday and early afternoon we're still in good shape. but between 4:00 and 5:00, that's when we'll start to see the clouds begin to develop from west to southeast and also the showers and thunderstorms ahead of that front will start

to move on into our region. before that happens, though, i think our highs will get into the upper 80s, near 90 degrees for a high in the city center. upper 80s off toward the west and then things will start to get a little bit better. some improvement as we head into wednesday and thursday for the forecast. you want to have your checklist ready this morning. make sure you step out the door today with your sunglasses for the morning commute. yes, that umbrella for later on this afternoon. we're going to see hazy, hot and humid conditions and that code yellow air alert through the afternoon. then for the evening hours, i would say 5:00 to 6:00 time range, not exactly because the front does speed up and slow down but we are expecting a pretty wet drive time home with the showers and storms developing. some of that will linger into tomorrow morning but you can expect some cooler and even drier air to arrive in the extended forecast. that's going to help us out as we head into thursday and friday. for this morning, though, we're looking at dew points very high in the upper 60s. humidity at 76%.

yes, we will see the mugginess in place till the front washes things out. current temperatures are into the 70s with the stickiest spot being at reagan national airport with 76 degrees. future cast forecast model features some sunshine. i'll put this toward the midday hour, around 12:00 to 2:00. that's when we'll start to see the moisture moving on through. this is not a heavy rain event. no severe weather is expected and just a fraction of an inch will fall. then we'll clear things out and looks like a pretty good night tonight. still on the muggy side as the temperatures will be into the 70s for overnight lows. today's highs again into the upper 80s, near 90 degrees. next three days not so bad but behind that front, that's when we get the treat. come friday and saturday we're back into the middle 70s and at least we move all of that humidity. monika? >> we have one big issue that we've been telling you about for a while. good morning, everybody. it is in alexandria inside the beltway right here on sighsen

hour avenue. in -- on eisenhower avenue. our kevin king is on the scene here giving us this live shot here. eisenhower avenue closed down between the van dorn metro station and the eisenhower connector because of this building fire. you can see crews are on the scene and they've been there for a good hour or so trying to put this out i believe at a self-storage facility here inside the beltway on eisenhower avenue. you are going to want to use duke street north of eisenhower to get around this and again it's going to be there for a while. look at all that equipment on the scene closing down the roadway. it is -- we are not being told right now how long this will take so you want to plan early as you head outed door. thank you, kevin king, for this. we'll take you back over to our maps. if you're heading north on 95 to 395 on duke street, that's running smoothly. you just have your usual slow spots into woodbridge and springfield. we'll take a live look further north at duke street. this is running well.

the interstate heading for the 14th street bridge past duke street. i'll keep you posted on that situation in alexandria at 6:00. making news now at 5:51, this morning a powerful earthquake has shaken northern italy for the second time in the last ten days. local news reports say there are at least three people dead. this is video from the may 20 quake which killed seven people. this morning's tremor has caused some of the buildings damaged in the first quake to collapse. peru's government declaring a 30-day state of emergency. this is following a deadly protest against a copper mine there. two demonstrators were killed, dozens more were injured. the protesters claim that mining operations there are contaminating local water sources. researchers say bluefin tuna caught along the coast of california contain radiation levels ten times higher than normal. the fish have carried that radiation 6,000 miles from the waters near japan's crippled fukushima nuclear plant. scientists say the tuna

the month is almost over but may we're marking the national foster care month. it takes special people to take on this special responsibility. >> the perkins family in fairfax has been loving foster children and opening their home for years to them. jc hayward salutes the foster care family and the northern virginia family service as well. >> reporter: gail perkins cuddles with a new foster baby. her family is a mix of biological children and one adopted child. along with her husband jerry, everyone cares for the little ones. >> we have seen very, very sick

little ones turn out to be amazingly great little kids. we do it for the love of the kids. that's for sure. >> reporter: seven years ago the perkins helped a friend care for a sick foster baby. they worked with the nonprofit organization the northern virginia family service, and they were quickly hooked and even adopted one foster baby. >> we never got into foster care to adopt. we actually got in to do weekend respite care. 17 kids later here we are. >> reporter: foster care is tough, especially when the baby comes with severe health issues, like fetal alcohol syndrome or drug addiction. but it's worth it. >> as a family we feel called -- that god's called us to provide the safe haven for children so that they cannot be saddled with attachment disorder for the rest of their
