the way it went down. our ken molestina was in culpeper when a special prosecutor announced that the indictment now involves the suspect's mother. >> reporter: the grand jury handed up a four count indictment against daniel wright including murder. now we've learned of a new thing. the suspect's mother is also being charged and being indicted as it relates to this case. jim fisher the attorney served as a special prosecutor for the case. the grand jury found enough evidence for several charges. >> chart number one, plurd er. -- count number one, murder. count number two malicious shooting into an unoccupied vehicle. count three, malicious shooting into a vehicle including death. and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. >> reporter: it was then that he shot and killed 54-year-old patricia cook while she sat

inside her jeep. he claimed he had his arms inside her window and shot her. >> the terms trapped and dragged are not terms that i would have used based upon what i know of the evidence. >> reporter: the charges against the mother are three counts and forgery to cover up the son's personnel file within the police department. >> there were personnel file documents that involved aspects of his employment as a police officer for which she now stands indicted as having forged or altered in an attempt to purge that negative information. >> reporter: sullivan was employed as an administrative secretary at the time her son was hired as an officer. >> do you have any comments for what happened? anything at all that you would like to say. >> reporter: the town of culpeper police officers who were at the announcement dodged our cameras in questions and

headed for the door. wright turned himself in today. he is being held at the fauquier county detention center. he has a bond hearing scheduled for june 8th. we're in culpeper county, ken molestina, 9news now. a stormy night. topper is out there with more on that. >> we actually still have flash flood warnings in effect for prince george's county. another 15 minutes or so. we see most of the heavy activity is east of i95 and it's been fairly heavy. we've had reports of almost one and three quarter inches in 40 minutes when these storms were up north in frederick county. now they're down route 4 into southern maryland. again, these are very heavy storms. nothing severe. but heavy, heavy rains and frequent lightning. a lot of activity also down towards waldorf and la plata as

well. we're going to widen back out and then put this back into motion. heavy activity will slowly work its way across the bay. bad news is i don't think it's going to be completely out of here before the morning commute. so in the next hour, we're still left with some light to occasionally moderate rain. we begin to clear out a little bit. we'll come back and talk about that morning commute and we'll talk about the cold front. it's not through yet. more storms possible tomorrow. to campaign 2012 now. mitt romney now officially has enough delegates to clinch the republican presidential nomination and the news comes after the former massachusetts governor won the texas primary election tonight. romney was in las vegas for a fund raiser for donald trump and he greeted supporters. the delegate total he needs to snag the nomination. >> we need to have presidents who understand how this economy works day-to-day, small business, middle size business, big business, i do, i want to use that experience to get us to

[ cheers and applause ] >> meantime, the white house is slamming romney for not following the lead of 2008 gop nominee john mccain. he then offended barack obama for any foreigners who called him muslim. the campaign issued a statement saying if mitt romney lacks the backbone to stand up to donald trump, what does that say about the kind of president he would be? >> well, anita, he would probably be the kind of president who opposed same sex marriage. in any case, opponents of same sex marriage have delivered the maryland secretary of state office more than twice the number of signatures they needed to get this issue on the ballot in november. not all of those signatures will be good, but gary nurenberg is here to tell us it's probably enough to put gay marriage before the voters. gary. >> reporter: well, derek, that means a summer long campaign with millions being spent to convince maryland voters to say yes or no. >> let the people vote noo it

looks like they're going -- >> reporter: it looks like they're going to. some will get thrown out but the signatures turned in tuesday appear to be more than enough to put gay marriage on the november ballot. >> marylanders are engaged in the process. they're signing the petition and they want their voice to be heard. >> reporter: opponents of same sex marriage want to overturn the law signed by the governor this year that permits it, and they point to votes in other states. >> 32 times we have gone to the ballot box. >> reporter: but not all of those petition signatures reflect the vote of opponents. >> there are people that want to go to the ballot and want to vote for it at the ballot. >> reporter: he cites the recent support of the president and the ncaap as a trend towards acceptance. >> momentum is on our side. >> reporter: opponents are also grateful for the president's support of same sex marriage. >> great. we appreciate that. because you helped energize our crowd. >> reporter: well, today is just a step in a process that

pay your respects, a public memorial service will be held on wednesday. >> thanks, matt. and there is another music legend we have now loss. that's dock watson. flat picker, folk, country music, grammy winner several times over. doc watson died today at a hospital today in north carolina at the ang of 89. now to northern virginia where they have asked counter parts from canada to step in and lead the investigation into a deadly mid air collision. that's because one pilot in the crash worked for the faa. the other was with the national transportation safety board. the small planes collided yesterday over fauquier county. the ntsb pilot and his passenger were killed. >> you can tell that whoever was in that probably did not

chaos. well, tonight a metro attendant was hit by a train and then pinned underneath it for more than an hour. it happened this afternoon. a surgical trauma unit team was brought in to help get him out of there. metro is investigating how it could possibly have happened. in the meantime, it's also reviewing safety procedures at shady grove rail yard. a former rutgers student plans to turn himself in to begin his 30-day sentence. he secretly recorded a roommate with a male lover. after seven days of deliberations still no verdict in the john edwards corruption trial. legal experts say it's not about -- not time yet to worry about a hung jury. but if there is no decision by the end of the week, it could

certainly be an indication there is some dissent among jurors. meanwhile, there has been some out right goff ee behavior by the -- goofy behavior by the alter nits on the panel. -- alternates on the panel. they started dressing in the same color. one female alternate has been making eye contact and smiling at edwards. well, back here in dc, a major turning point in the trial of roger clemons. after weeks of testimony, prosecutors have finally rested their case and the defense team called their first witnesses. clemons has been charged with lying to congress when he told a house committee that he never used steroids or human growth hormone. at least 17 people are dead and hundreds injured out there after a 5.8 earthquake rocked northern italy. buildings throughout the region simply collapsed due to the force of the powerful quake. rescue crews are combing through the debris looking for survivors. this would be the second quake to hit the region in a little

so in our health alert tonight, we are talking about tuna infected with radiation from the disaster in japan. these fish are turning up off the california coast. the levels of radioactive was 10 times more active than previous years. but even so, that is still safe to eat by the u.s. and japanese governments. >> whether we're immediately eating it or whether it's just staying in the ocean, my understanding is that this type

72 right now. light rain downtown. we hit 91. 72 is actually the low so far today. so the rain cooled us off a little bit. kind of nice. dew point 69. and the pressure began to rise a little bit. now, here is live doppler. most of the rain is now east of 95. a little bit of light activity out in the west. and you folks may have some pretty good fog. that may be something you want to factor into your commute tomorrow in addition to maybe a few wet roads, especially in southern maryland. especially coming up 50 or 301 or 5, you'll probably have wet roads. light activity out towards annapolis. heavy activity in charles county down towards 301 and la plata and some real heavy activity south. rainfall rates with that storm 1-3 inches an hour. we'll back the radar out a little bit and put it into motion in the next hour. we'll see everything work its

way across the bay. still kind of heavy activity from st. mary city. maybe a couple of sprinkles on the back side out towards manassas. but you folks west of 95, the heavy activity is over for tonight. here is a look at our future cast. tomorrow morning maybe a couple of sprinkles south of town. but for the most part just clouds and perhaps a little bit of fog. we'll put this back into motion. you get to lunch time, we're in pretty good shape. don't see any problems around lunch time. some clouds, yes, but i don't think we'll see anything in terms of precipitation. but we get into the afternoon, the second round of precipitation comes through. so we could see a second round of thunderstorms tomorrow between about 4:00 and 5:00. i don't think we're going to see anything severe. but just know that we're not quite done just yet with everything. all right. we'll go ahead and you see by noon there is the clouds. and then by evening, a little line of showers and storms trying to develop between 4:00 and 5:00. so heading up 270 tomorrow. out 66. you might have a little wet commute going back home. but nothing like the heavy

downpours we had today. no doubt about that. so here is the deal. morning commute wet for some. that's for sure. especially south of town. not as hot tomorrow. so we get a little bit of a break on temps. now, by evening perhaps an afternoon thunderstorm. cooler on thursday and on friday. in fact, thursday looks just fantastic. next seven days look like this, thursday sunshine, lower humidity. temps around 80. now, friday showers and storms will develop late in the day. that's not good news nor the nats who are in -- for the nats who are in town hosting the braves. and then we're looking at temperature in the 70s on saturday and then nice on sunday and then heating up a little bit monday and tuesday. >> okay. >> okay. >> sweet weekend coming up. >> yes. speaking of of the braves, maybe kristen can explain how the nats can put a beat down on the braves in atlanta over the weekend and now they can't get it done in miami. >> they have struggled. they're 1 and 12 with runners in

tomorrow night we'll find out whether the wizards will once again have the number one pick in the nba draft. if they win that lottery, this will be the second time in three years the wiz get first crack. whoever they end up with, randy whitman will once again be there to lead the guys. he will stay on as head coach of the wizards since taking over for flip saunders in january. a big announcement coming for dc high school athletes. mayor vincent will announce the state athletic association. beginning in the fall of 2012, athletes in cross-country, soccer and foots ball will have a -- football will have a chance to play in the first ever dc xhap game. and over in france, an emotional day for serena williams. serena dropped the last two falling in the first round of the french open. this is williams first ever one

and done in a grand slam tournament. finally tonight a group of young soccer players in clinton, maryland got a nice surprise today. legendary goal keeper tow any meola led the kids -- tony meola led the kids through a clinic before giving them new gear and tickets. he will also be inducted into the u.s. national soccer hall of fame prior to the game. that starts at 4:00 and the game starts at 8:00. >> new gear. >> for the kids. >> how exciting. >> and rain is going to stay away. >> it should be good until after 8:00. >> it should be a good night for
