the clouds. 9:00 73. still with a good deal of cloudiness. just an isolated shower out there now. some sun midday around 80 with highs in the low to mid-80s and an isolated shower or storm this afternoon as a cold front pushes through. we had a lot of activity yesterday afternoon and evening. this morning the heavy south is south of richmond and may travel toward the northern neck or southern parts of the delmarva. locally just some isolated showers is what we're watching this morning. this stuff is getting lighter and lighter over the past few hours. but we'll run into a couple of raindrops here and there. down to 61 in leesburg. 59 cumberland. south and east of town still upper 60s to low 70s. here in d.c. right now 70, going up to about 85. 80 in cambridge. 86 in ma fan sas. let's go to monika at 6:00 a.m. she's got time saver traffic. you're not smiling all that much. >> i am. i'm very happy to say that things are great. no problems to report if you're planning to head around town. i think things are actually pretty good right now. on the beltway north of town,

just that normal slow stuff forming toward georgia avenue. on the outer loop of the beltway, a little heavy on route 29 trying to head for the beltway. otherwise you're good to go. let's take a live look outside. first of all on 270 southbound you're going to find that initial slowdown leaving frederick toward urbana. then 121 moving at the speed limit. another live look on the other side of town. here's what it looks like coming in on route 50 as you head in from the bay bridge past route 301. you'll be fine heading for the beltway in cheverly. a last look at our geographerrics. i want to give you -- geographerrics. i want to give -- graphics. i want to give you a heads up. the marc brunswick train 870 running 15 to 20 minutes late. an officer as been indicted for murder. >> the grand jury looking into the case of the death of patricia cook heard from several witnesses. we have more on the case of

officer daniel harmon-wright. >> reporter: those witnesses all something very different from what the officer claimed. he says he was dragged by the victim's car, but obviously the grand jury did not buy that story. 32-year-old daniel harmon- wright is behind bars this morning indicted on four counts including malicious shooting and murder. he claims he acted in self- defense when he shot and eventually killed 54-year-old patricia cook. the 54-year-old woman was parked in a school lot one february morning when the officer claimed she rolled up her car window on his arm and then took off dragging him behind. witnesses and the evidence prove that didn't happen. >> what i'm saying the terms "trapped and dragged" are not terms that i would have used based upon what i know of the evidence. >> i know what i saw as the truth. the pain, the anger, itself frustration, the tears -- the

frustration, the tears, i don't want somebody else to have to go through what i did. >> reporter: tough to hear from that widow whose wife has been gone now for some time. in a strange twist in this case, the officer's mother is now indicted herself. she's -- she stands accused of actually trying to cover up her son's bad job report on his personnel file when she worked in the police chief's office. coming up at 6:30, hear from one of the witnesses at the scene of the crime and what he saw. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves live in our satellite center this morning. at last check the metro worker hit by a train yesterday remains in critical condition. we're still waiting to learn that worker's name. we do know the worker has been with metro for more than 25 years. the incident happened yesterday afternoon at the rail yard near the shady grove station. it took some time for fire and rescue crews to pull the worker out from under the train.

activists in syria say government troops are shelling rebel neighborhoods again this morning. the target? the city of holms. the syrian government is promising its own investigation into the killings but there is already a diplomatic backlash in this. the white house is giving the syrian envoy here in washington 72 hours to pack up and go home. several other nations are expelling diplomats as well. >> more than ten countries have now expelled syrian diplomats. how would this stop another massacre? >> obviously no single action like that, diplomatic action stops the regime from its brutal behavior, but it is a cumulative effort. >> the u.s. is right now shying away from any military support or supporting military efforts. cbs news reports that's because

the white house says this is a very complicated situation. in about two hours the national spelling bee gets under way at national harbor and a local girl is the youngest ever to make this round. lori anne madison is from lake ridge, virginia. she is just 6 years old. she honeys to advance out of the field of 278 spellers. the finals are tomorrow night. starting next year, there could be an international spelling bee. next december there will be a tournament involving spellers from several english speaking nations. there would be teams of three from various countries. this year's national event already includes students from the bahamas, canada, china, gawn na, and gentleman -- ghana, and jamaica. maryland areas newest casino won't have table games but will have virtual versions of it will feature more than 400 slot machines. the new casino is near anne arundel mills mall which is just south of bwi airport.

managing partner joe weinberg told wjz-tv maryland live will be one of the biggest gaming and retail destinations in the country. >> even if someone doesn't come in here -- someone does come in here and doesn't play the machines, will it benefit every midder? >> absolutely. we'll not only be one of the number one taxpayers in the maryland and the united states. >> opening night for maryland live next wednesday. the doors open at 10:00. 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your money and your blackberry. >> indeed. not looking so good for research in motion. >> that's right. what's going on here is remember when you had to have a blackberry and now you have an iphone or an android phone? that's the problem for blackberry maker research in motion. the company struggling for a while and it's now warning it will have an operating loss in its current march through june quarter. it also says there will be significant layoffs this year. experts are saying the move could be laying the groundwork

for radically reshaping or selling off the company. sprint nextel combined forces in an ill-fated merger back in 2005. now it's saying the company will shut down the nextel network as early as june 30 of next year. for a while now sprint has talked about its intentions to wind down nextel, but this is the first time it's offered up an end date. one of the biggest challenges in the $36 billion so-called merger of equals nextel's network ran on a different technology than sprint's and that made it tough to truly combine forces. speaking of tough, rough time for one highly touted new stock. facebook closed at $30 a share for the first time since going public on may 18. shares of the social networking company now down 23% since the debut. that makes facebook one of the worst performing initial public stock offerings of the past decade, down $25 billion in market value in less than two weeks. spectacular failure so far for that ipo.

the beltway in silver spring. this is northbound georgia avenue at forest glen. crews on the scene of a two-car accident with a stretcher there as well. so be aware of that. if you're coming off the beltway trying to head northbound on georgia avenue. i'll have more on this coming up in my next report at 6:18. back to you. we turn our attention to campaign 2012. mitt romney appears to have the republican nomination sewn up. he easily won tuesday's primary in texas. that gives him the delegates he needs to secure the nomination. he has 1,183, 39 more than he needs. earlier in the day mitt romney was in vegas talking about the economy. >> we need to have presidents who understand how this economy works day to day, small business, middle size business, big business. i do. i want to use that experience to get us to work again. >> president obama's campaign wasted no time going on the

attack after that. it criticized romney's reluctance to distance himself from donald trump. trump again is once again questioning whether or not the president was born in the united states despite the fact that his birth certificate has been released. the group behind the referendum for same-sex marriage submitted its signatures and it had more than double the number required. >> let the people vote. >> reporter: looks like they're going to some will get thrown out but the signatures turned in tuesday appear to be more than enough to put gay marriage on the november ballot. >> marylanders are engaged in the process. they're enthusiastically signing the petition. they want their voice to be heard. >> reporter: opponents of same- sex marriage want to overturn the law signed by the governor this year that permits it and they point to votes in other states. >> 32 times where it's gone before the ballot box the people have voted to uphold marriage being between one man and one woman. >> reporter: but not all of

those petition signatures reflect the votes of opponents. >> we know there are people who want to go to the ballot and want to vote for it at the ballot and sign add petition. >> reporter: he cites the recent support of the president and the naacp as reflecting a trend toward acceptance. >> we really believe that momentum is on our side. >> reporter: opponents are also grateful for the president's support of same-sex marriage. >> great, we appreciate that because you have energized our crowd. >> reporter: this is just a step in a process that will become more and more visible as the summer wears on and both sides travel the state organizing town hall meetings to explain their respective positions and to organize get out the vote efforts that could well have an impact on the presidential election though in maryland not likely a decisive one. gary nurenberg, 9news now. out of the more than 122,000 petition signatures turned in yesterday, 20,000 were from baltimore county. another 16,000 were from montgomery county. and 10,000 came from prince

george's county. just about 6:15 this wednesday morning. here's a look at some of the other news stories this morning. the fda is issuing a warning to be on the lookout for fake add roll, the for -- adder roll, the drug used to treat hyperactivity disorder. the fda says a fake version being sold online has the wrong active ingreed yefntses. at least one survivor has been found in the rowble -- rubble from yesterday's earthquake. a woman was pulled from the ruins of her apartment building. 16 people died and 3 a 50 were injured in -- 350 were injured in yesterday's quake. it's also forced thousands out of their homes. looks like beryl could become a tropical storm once again today. it's moved back into the ocean and is skirting the carolina coast. the storm already dumped more than a foot of rain on parts of georgia and florida. howard is here. we hear tropical storm maybe not so bad as a hurricane but we know the damage and water. >> a lot of rain could be a

problem. the circulation, winds are 30 miles an hour. 39 making it a tropical storm. now that it's getting back over the open waters, it has that opportunity to incidence identify -- opportunity to intensify. the good news is will be scooting out to the atlantic. here's your bus stop forecast this morning. got some isolated showers out there. it's comfortable. temps range in the low 60s to the lower 70s out there. these showers are becoming more and more isolated by the minute. southern maryland seeing the brunt of it right now. we're going to get midday sunshine here to mix in with the clouds. so by 1:00 we're up 2081 degrees. -- up to 81 degrees. winds will turn to the south with an isolated shower or storm till the front pushes through. highs 84 with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 82. here's a look at the radar and satellite combined from last night. big storms about 12 hours ago did some damage in spots. dropped some hail this morning. just the isolated showers. west of 95, south of 66 this is all ground clutter here.

seeing a few sprinkles in montgomery county, howard county. down in southern maryland, st. mary's county, you've got heavier rains which are coming out of the northern neck but the rest of us relatively quiet with 65 now in rockville and bethesda. it is 69 in crofton and also up in baltimore. 67 in alexandria and out to the west 62 haymarket. one of the cool spots this morning while sterling is 65. as we look outside on our weather camera, it is light but cloudy. clouds dominate this morning. 70 degrees with a north wind at 5 miles an hour and our humidity still up there at 78%. pretty nice air mass coming from chicago and indianapolis. it will be here tonight and tomorrow. tomorrow looks great. beryl we just talked about. you see the circulation really coming near charleston, south carolina. that's going to continue to move off toward the east, northeast. we're waiting for a front to come through which could touch off an isolated shower or two this afternoon. not a bad day, warm, 84. again the isolated shower. tonight clear to partly cloudy. 50s and 60s. 80ish tomorrow. going to be a beautiful

thursday with friday featuring a return of some showers and storms later in the day into friday night. should be mostly out of here by the time you wake up saturday morning. saturday 78 and a late storm sunday, highs around 80. it's 6:17. monika santami stepping in. been a pretty good day so far. >> so far. not too bad. we do have one accident. it is a fender bender. crews on the scene doing a great job of clearing this up quickly. on the northbound side of georgia avenue just off the beltway at forest glen, i'm going to step out and show you a live look from our sky 9 on the northbound side. you can see this was a two-car accident and crews on the scene with a stretcher and an ambulance there. should be cleared up shortly. you are able to get by along the right side of the roadway but as you exit off the beltway, this is what you should expect in silver spring northbound on georgia avenue. i'll keep you posted on this situation. we'll also take a live look at the beltway north of town. here at new hampshire avenue, you can see the brake lights forming right here on the outer loop as you head around toward georgia avenue.

woodbridge, virginia. he had a strikeout and walk in the game. he was called after five innings because of rain. he hopes to be back with the big league club by this weekend. the nba holds its draft lottery tonight. the wizards finished with the second worst record this last season which means they have a 20% chance of getting that coveted number one pick. the worst the wiz can do is to pick number five. game to last night in the western conference finals between san antonio spurs and oklahoma city thunder. san antonio tony parker was the dominant force in this game, 34 points, eight assists. the spurs win 120-111. they have now won 20 games in a row. they're up in the series 2-0. a big game tonight in soccer right here at fed ex field. team u.s.a. hosting brazil in a friendly tournament exhibition. americans got in some practice yesterday in landover. the u.s. is coming off a five- run off of scotland. tonight's match begins just

down in southeastern virginia tracking up toward the northern neck. maybe st. mary's county will see a couple of showers the next half-hour but most of the stuff we're seeing now coming through is fairly light. the next couple of hours some light showers. your temperatures in the low 60s north and west of town. we're 61 leesburg while we're still 70 and we'll see highs today better than yesterday. still above average in the low to mid-80s. it is 6:30. time to check in with monika santami. she'll let you know what you can expect as you head out the door. what you can expect is this accident is in its clearing stages on the northbound side of georgia avenue just north of the beltway here at forest glen. we had a live picture there showing you the scene of the accident. it was two cars involved and right now traffic is getting through. got a bit of slow task on the outer loop trying to exit on the northbound side of georgia avenue but you will be able to get by. if you're planning to head inbound on i-66, that's incident free. a bit slow into centreville and fairfax. over here just south of route 7, it is closed with wires down in the roadway. so be aware of that and expect

options to deal with syria and the white house leaks on the osama bin laden raid. plus, jazz legend winston mar sell liss brings us a rare interview with paul simon. great conversation when those two get together. we'll see you starting at 7:00. >> we'll be watching. the public viewing of chuck brown had to be cut short last night. police cleared the crowd around 8:30. they didn't want anyone to get hurt in the storms which moved through. thousands of people visited howard theatre tuesday to pay their respects to the godfather of go go music. brown died two weeks ago. he was 75. the scene resembled a street party, something people say brown really would have enjoyed. >> a great man that brought the city together through music. >> rest in peace, chuck. we love you. it will never be the same without you. ♪ feel like busting loose >> can't not love that music when it comes on. there will will be a public

service for chuck brown tomorrow. doors open at 10:00 and the memorial begins at noon. a police officer from the town of culpeper, virginia has been indicted on murder charges. >> prosecutors say he's to blame for the shooting death of patricia cook earlier this year and they say this was no accident. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with both sides of this story. >> reporter: the grand jury heard from 45 witnesses and then concluded the officer's story that he was afraid for his life was actually not true. that's according to the grand jury and their indict that they handed down recently. the 32-year-old daniel harmon- wright said his arm was pinned inside the victim's car window and when she took off, she dragged him behind. 54-year-old patricia cook was sitting in her car unarmed. prosecutors say the evidence proves the officer was not dragged. cook's widower is now filing a $5.4 million wrongful death lawsuit against the culpeper

police department. here's what one witness said he saw that fateful february morning. >> i was -- it was halfway up. he said stop or i'll shoot. i really didn't think he was going to do it but she got the window all the way up and that's when he shot. >> we have other witnesses that will support the fact that the officer did not appear to be injured in anyway. >> reporter: however, the officer's attorney says he will defend his client against these charges and in a strange twist, the officer's mother was indicted herself yesterday. now stands accused of a coverup. investigators say that she tried to forge her son's bad job records when she worked for the police chief. she left that office in 2010. her son, the police officer is now behind bars this morning. he'll be back in court for a bond hearing next week. , back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from our satellite center. early this morning,

britain's top court said julian assange should be sent back to sweden. he's the man behind the site wikileaks. he's facing sex crime charges in his home country. he could still appeal the decision to europe's highest court but lawyers say that move is unlikely. in just a few hours people living in the district's ward five will have a voice once again on the city council. kenyan mcduffie will be sworn into office later this afternoon. the democrat won the special election early this month and will serve through 2014. mcduffie will fill out the term that was originally won bihari thomas, jr. thomas resigned for stealing $350,000 in city money. thomas will be spending three years in prison for that. is virginia governor bob mcdonnell going to be the republican nominee for vice president this november? our peggy fox asked him. >> reporter: are you or are you not being vetted to be vice presidential candidate? >> only by the media. you know, there's only one that

matters and that's mitt romney. my goal is to help him. i'm the chairman of the republican governors' association. i have been asked to campaign for mitt romney in different places around the country. i'm gladly doing that for him. >> right now wusa9.com you can see more of peggy's interview with governor mcdonnell and learn his take on the future of metro's silver line through northern virginia in that interview as well. at 6:36, jessica doyle is here with another your money report. >> how does politics play on wall street? >> people working on wall street may be looking for a new direction. in 2008, president obama raised almost $16 million from wall street. clear winner here, that was $7 million more than republican nominee john mccain. this time around, though, financiers appear to be throwing money at republican challenger mitt romney. the center for responsive politics reports that people who work in the securities and investment industry have given the romney campaign $8.5 million through the end of april. president obama has brought in

just $3 million in that time. home prices have hit a new ten-year low in march. that's according to a new report out from the home price index. the report finds average prices down 2.6% compared to 12 months earlier. prices hit new lows in five cities. atlanta, chicago, las vegas, new york, and portland. in our area prices were down 0.6% so not as bad. experts say affordable mortgages combined with much lower home prices should start actually helping to boost the housing market. at some point. given all of those price declines, here are the most affordable cities to buy a home if you're thinking of relocating. the winner is indianapolis. median home price there $102,000. but get this, the median income just about $67,000. that make it is really affordable. dayton, ohio take came in second followed by lakeland, florida, modesto, california and grand rapids, michigan. the numbers crunched by the

it's 6:42 and 70 degrees. i'm going to show you what it looks like on our mdot camera on the southbound side of 270 at middle brook road. there is an accident at route 124 and it's blocking the right lane. delays on subpoena 270. -- delays on southbound 270. watch out for it. let's take you to the maps. on the inbound side of the

suitland parkway right here at branch avenue, an accident, that one just reported apparently involving a bus. so be aware of that if you're planning to head inbound on the suitland parkway this morning. everything looks great coming up from route 5, route 4, route 301. no issues to report out of southern maryland. we're fine on route 210 heading up from accokeek up into oxon hill and to the wilson bridge. we'll take a live look at the wilson bridge on our chart cameras and both loops of the beltway are fine. on the wilson bridge south of town, no problems to report here between oxon hill and alexandria. but before i go, i do have a commuter alert. an early heads up on some beltway work that's starting friday. crews will begin closing lanes on the inner loop between the wilson bridge and telegraph road. this will affect the threw lanes, -- the through lanes, not the local lanes. by 8:00 at night, all the lanes will stay closed till monday morning. delays are expected to begin on the maryland side of the

our weather much nicer tomorrow. isolated shower or storm. tonight 50s and 60s. so it's going to be more comfortable. tomorrow about 80 degrees. a nice day tomorrow. we're looking at low humidity, really probably the pick of the week. friday, though, we start with 50s and 60s but some showers and storms move our way for the afternoon and evening hours. temperatures around 80. the nats are back in town on friday so hopefully that won't interfere but we may be dodging a few raindrops. by saturday another decent day, early clouds but 78 degrees. sunday late maybe some storms returning, 80. then next week 81 monday but a better chance of showers tuesday. we'll cool down agent bit with a high of 74 and a few showers around. so we're looking much better today. just watch out for that isolated shower this morning and again this afternoon. andrea and mike? >> thank you, howard. 6:46. how is the weather up there, big guy? >> randy newman once sang a song and it had a lyric in it

"short people got no reason to live." in one city they have another problem. >> look how much taller he is over me. short people are vertically challenged like me. they can't see the parking meters. the parking authority in louisville, kentucky installed new meters as part of a pilot program. the problem? the screen showing how much time you have left is at 5'5" and that's a problem for people who come in like my mother at barely 5 feet tall. but there's one height impaired gentleman who found a way around the problem. >> what i do is get up and now i can see exactly what i'm putting in and the amount. >> doesn't it seem a little bit ridiculous? >> it sure does. >> you bet. the parking authority admits its pilot program is a bust and will remove the meters and make sure future ones are installed at a lower at tiewld. for those of -- altitude. for those of you who see me in person and go i thought you were so much taller, the reason why? i carry my own box with me.

one more thing we're asking. this is day eight of jury deliberations in the john edwards trial. we're asking why are they taking so long. >> one of the reasons is rumored anyhow. there's no cameras in the courtroom but apparently one of the jury members is flirting with john edwards. a lot of the reporters that are in the courtroom say it's obvious. it's not reported very widely but the judge took the jury -- they didn't sequester them but had them in a closed door meeting, didn't no the say why
