officer daniel harmon-wright. >> reporter: those witnesses all something very different from what the officer claimed. he says he was dragged by the victim's car, but obviously the grand jury did not buy that story. 32-year-old daniel harmon- wright is behind bars this morning indicted on four counts including malicious shooting and murder. he claims he acted in self- defense when he shot and eventually killed 54-year-old patricia cook. the 54-year-old woman was parked in a school lot one february morning when the officer claimed she rolled up her car window on his arm and then took off dragging him behind. witnesses and the evidence prove that didn't happen. >> what i'm saying the terms "trapped and dragged" are not terms that i would have used based upon what i know of the evidence. >> i know what i saw as the truth. the pain, the anger, itself frustration, the tears -- the

frustration, the tears, i don't want somebody else to have to go through what i did. >> reporter: tough to hear from that widow whose wife has been gone now for some time. in a strange twist in this case, the officer's mother is now indicted herself. she's -- she stands accused of actually trying to cover up her son's bad job report on his personnel file when she worked in the police chief's office. coming up at 6:30, hear from one of the witnesses at the scene of the crime and what he saw. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves live in our satellite center this morning. at last check the metro worker hit by a train yesterday remains in critical condition. we're still waiting to learn that worker's name. we do know the worker has been with metro for more than 25 years. the incident happened yesterday afternoon at the rail yard near the shady grove station. it took some time for fire and rescue crews to pull the worker out from under the train.

activists in syria say government troops are shelling rebel neighborhoods again this morning. the target? the city of holms. the syrian government is promising its own investigation into the killings but there is already a diplomatic backlash in this. the white house is giving the syrian envoy here in washington 72 hours to pack up and go home. several other nations are expelling diplomats as well. >> more than ten countries have now expelled syrian diplomats. how would this stop another massacre? >> obviously no single action like that, diplomatic action stops the regime from its brutal behavior, but it is a cumulative effort. >> the u.s. is right now shying away from any military support or supporting military efforts. cbs news reports that's because

the white house says this is a very complicated situation. in about two hours the national spelling bee gets under way at national harbor and a local girl is the youngest ever to make this round. lori anne madison is from lake ridge, virginia. she is just 6 years old. she honeys to advance out of the field of 278 spellers. the finals are tomorrow night. starting next year, there could be an international spelling bee. next december there will be a tournament involving spellers from several english speaking nations. there would be teams of three from various countries. this year's national event already includes students from the bahamas, canada, china, gawn na, and gentleman -- ghana, and jamaica. maryland areas newest casino won't have table games but will have virtual versions of it will feature more than 400 slot machines. the new casino is near anne arundel mills mall which is just south of bwi airport.

for radically reshaping or selling off the company. sprint nextel combined forces in an ill-fated merger back in 2005. now it's saying the company will shut down the nextel network as early as june 30 of next year. for a while now sprint has talked about its intentions to wind down nextel, but this is the first time it's offered up an end date. one of the biggest challenges in the $36 billion so-called merger of equals nextel's network ran on a different technology than sprint's and that made it tough to truly combine forces. speaking of tough, rough time for one highly touted new stock. facebook closed at $30 a share for the first time since going public on may 18. shares of the social networking company now down 23% since the debut. that makes facebook one of the worst performing initial public stock offerings of the past decade, down $25 billion in market value in less than two weeks. spectacular failure so far for that ipo.

attack after that. it criticized romney's reluctance to distance himself from donald trump. trump again is once again questioning whether or not the president was born in the united states despite the fact that his birth certificate has been released. the group behind the referendum for same-sex marriage submitted its signatures and it had more than double the number required. >> let the people vote. >> reporter: looks like they're going to some will get thrown out but the signatures turned in tuesday appear to be more than enough to put gay marriage on the november ballot. >> marylanders are engaged in the process. they're enthusiastically signing the petition. they want their voice to be heard. >> reporter: opponents of same- sex marriage want to overturn the law signed by the governor this year that permits it and they point to votes in other states. >> 32 times where it's gone before the ballot box the people have voted to uphold marriage being between one man and one woman. >> reporter: but not all of

george's county. just about 6:15 this wednesday morning. here's a look at some of the other news stories this morning. the fda is issuing a warning to be on the lookout for fake add roll, the for -- adder roll, the drug used to treat hyperactivity disorder. the fda says a fake version being sold online has the wrong active ingreed yefntses. at least one survivor has been found in the rowble -- rubble from yesterday's earthquake. a woman was pulled from the ruins of her apartment building. 16 people died and 3 a 50 were injured in -- 350 were injured in yesterday's quake. it's also forced thousands out of their homes. looks like beryl could become a tropical storm once again today. it's moved back into the ocean and is skirting the carolina coast. the storm already dumped more than a foot of rain on parts of georgia and florida. howard is here. we hear tropical storm maybe not so bad as a hurricane but we know the damage and water. >> a lot of rain could be a

service for chuck brown tomorrow. doors open at 10:00 and the memorial begins at noon. a police officer from the town of culpeper, virginia has been indicted on murder charges. >> prosecutors say he's to blame for the shooting death of patricia cook earlier this year and they say this was no accident. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with both sides of this story. >> reporter: the grand jury heard from 45 witnesses and then concluded the officer's story that he was afraid for his life was actually not true. that's according to the grand jury and their indict that they handed down recently. the 32-year-old daniel harmon- wright said his arm was pinned inside the victim's car window and when she took off, she dragged him behind. 54-year-old patricia cook was sitting in her car unarmed. prosecutors say the evidence proves the officer was not dragged. cook's widower is now filing a $5.4 million wrongful death lawsuit against the culpeper

police department. here's what one witness said he saw that fateful february morning. >> i was -- it was halfway up. he said stop or i'll shoot. i really didn't think he was going to do it but she got the window all the way up and that's when he shot. >> we have other witnesses that will support the fact that the officer did not appear to be injured in anyway. >> reporter: however, the officer's attorney says he will defend his client against these charges and in a strange twist, the officer's mother was indicted herself yesterday. now stands accused of a coverup. investigators say that she tried to forge her son's bad job records when she worked for the police chief. she left that office in 2010. her son, the police officer is now behind bars this morning. he'll be back in court for a bond hearing next week. , back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from our satellite center. early this morning,

just $3 million in that time. home prices have hit a new ten-year low in march. that's according to a new report out from the home price index. the report finds average prices down 2.6% compared to 12 months earlier. prices hit new lows in five cities. atlanta, chicago, las vegas, new york, and portland. in our area prices were down 0.6% so not as bad. experts say affordable mortgages combined with much lower home prices should start actually helping to boost the housing market. at some point. given all of those price declines, here are the most affordable cities to buy a home if you're thinking of relocating. the winner is indianapolis. median home price there $102,000. but get this, the median income just about $67,000. that make it is really affordable. dayton, ohio take came in second followed by lakeland, florida, modesto, california and grand rapids, michigan. the numbers crunched by the

suitland parkway right here at branch avenue, an accident, that one just reported apparently involving a bus. so be aware of that if you're planning to head inbound on the suitland parkway this morning. everything looks great coming up from route 5, route 4, route 301. no issues to report out of southern maryland. we're fine on route 210 heading up from accokeek up into oxon hill and to the wilson bridge. we'll take a live look at the wilson bridge on our chart cameras and both loops of the beltway are fine. on the wilson bridge south of town, no problems to report here between oxon hill and alexandria. but before i go, i do have a commuter alert. an early heads up on some beltway work that's starting friday. crews will begin closing lanes on the inner loop between the wilson bridge and telegraph road. this will affect the threw lanes, -- the through lanes, not the local lanes. by 8:00 at night, all the lanes will stay closed till monday morning. delays are expected to begin on the maryland side of the
