washington convention center. the mayor gray says the flags will be lowered to half staff throughout the describe and bruce john -- district and bruce johnson reports on the memorial unlike any the city has ever seen. ♪ >> reporter: the entertainment. he's the one of the artists preparing to salute go go legend chuck brown tomorrow. ♪ >> i've managed and developed groups such as raheem dine, tank, i've worked with tires, dru hill, puff any. >> reporter: more than 10,000 people stood in line for the viewing yesterday at the howard theater and one government source today predicted up to 15,000 could turn out for the funeral at the convention center for chuck brown. >> you had louis armstrong and jazz. you have bob marley who develops a genre and transcends that. now you have chuck brown who

develops a genre and transcends that. >> reporter: wayne bruce's music director for tomorrow's funeral paying homage to chuck brown will be a host of local stars like sugar bear, donny simpson and huggy lowdown. the chuck brown bands will also perform. >> it should change some people's mindsets. >> reporter: the people performing here at the washington convection center tomorrow tell me this town has never seen the type of musical sendoff we're going to see tomorrow. add to that the fact that much of the world still doesn't know much about go-go music and tomorrow could be one for the history books. >> gospel, jazz, blues, go-go. and especially go-go. will send chuck off. in a manner that's fitting of a king. >> reporter: doors open at 10:00. the funeral is set to begin two hours later after 14,500 people have entered the doors. the doors will be closed.

bruce johnson, 9news now. and today congresswoman introduced a resolution in the house of representatives designating chuck brown isobits day, august 22nd as chuck brown day. several streets that is around the washington convention center will be closed for tomorrow's memorial service. and once again mayor vincent gray ordered all d.c. flags flown at half staff on thursday in honor of brown. we also want to remind you 9news now will broadcast tomorrow's memorial live on the air and our website, wusa9.com. a decorated culpeper police officer now finds himself on the wrong side of the law. officer daniel harmon wright is in jail tonight charges with murder for shooting and killing ab unarmed woman back in february. a special grand jury indicted the officer and his mother yesterday. our peggy fox joins us live in fauquier county with the very latest. what's up peg? >> reporter: well, i can tell you this that special grand jury spent an entire month

interviewing 45 witnesses related to the shooting. and looked at 100 pieces of evidence. the result? culpeper police officer daniel harmon wright has been suspended without pay and is here in the fauquier county jail. >> his initial reaction was shock and horror. he was on the verge of nausea. >> reporter: he escorted his client to jail after a special grand jury indicted him for murder and three other related counts. the 32-year-old is charged in the shooting death of 54-year- old patricia cook sitting in her jeep wrangler in a parking lot february 9th. >> she had been wandsering around on the school and refused to identify herself. >> reporter: he told investigators she caught his arm in the window and was dragging him when he shot her six times. special prosecutor jim fisher says it didn't happen that way. >> and that statement was

partially accurate but the terms trapped and dragged were used. these were not descriptors that i would have used in connection with that particular press release. >> and he's being held there. he can't get -- he can't free himself. >> reporter: harmon wright's attorney says it's true, he wasn't dragged. he says it was his hand that was caught in the window and that he'd stepped up on to the jeep's running board as cook started driving away. >> there's another thing i keep hearing this thing the woman was unarmed. well, she's driving a vehicle that weighs about 4,000 pounds and she's going between 5 and 10 miles an hour. that has more kin etic energy than a bullet. >> reporter: his mother bethany sullivan is also charged relating to forging public documents in an attempt to purge her son's personnel file of negative information. >> enraged. i mean just after that incident i've seen him since. he still had the look of rage. >> reporter: jean et price wonders if her complaint against harmon wright could have been altered. this is an hospital record

showing an injury to her wrist she says she suffered when harmon right pushed her in 2008. now those forgery charges against his mother, bethany sullivan have nothing to do with the shooting. they stem from when she was the police chief's secretary and had access to her son's personnel files. we'll stay on this story and we'll be at his hearing next friday. i'm peggy fox live in fatherrier county, back to you -- fakier county, back to you. we know the identities now of the two men who died when their plane clued in midair with some -- collided in mid area with another plane. surae chinn is here. >> reporter: very tragic all the way around. but we went to the neighborhood of these two men who died in that midair collision. on memorial day. and they are 60-year-old james duncan of bethesda. he was piloting the beach craft and his passenger, 57-year-old

paul gardella of burg, virginia. the pilot of the piper cherokee landed in a field with one wincherred off. he -- wing sheared off. he is mir rucolasly okay. the other aircraft burst into flames killing duncan and gardella. he was a flight instructor at aviation adventures in warrenton. neighbors say gardella loved to fly, loved his family and gardening. >> he was a very good man. and they're a wonderful family. his wife is a sweetheart. they have a very close family. very close-knit. and this is just shaken us all up. i can't even imagine. if that were my husband. my children's father. i can't -- you know, it's horrible. >> reporter: well, on the aviation adventures website gardella has a quote answering what was his most exciting

aviation adventure and he says any first aerobatic lesson. i can't get it out of my head. at 6:00 it's the ntsb and the canada tsb investigation part of the story and our bruce leshan is out there in fauquier county to bring us the very latest hoping to answer some of the questions how this tragedy happened. >> guys doing what they love to do. thank you. well, a soldier from springfield, virginia has now been killed in afghanistan. chief warrant officer john pratt was 51 years old and he was killed in a helicopters crash in kabul this past saturday. a soldier from maine was also killed in the crash. the pentagon says their apache helicopter crashed out on patrol and as of now there was no enemy fire in the area at the time. pratt was assigned in germany. police are out to catch if burglar or burglars who've been targeting restaurants and businesses in columbia, maryland. 11 restaurants were hit in the past couple of days most of the businesses are in the area around to be bin road and snow

den river parkway and many of the crimes glass was shattered. among the businesses targets, pizza. sushi king and l. a. boxing, at this point police are not sure how many people are responsible. a babysitter is being held without bond tonight on charges of felony child neglect. 22-year-old lasheika harmon is accused of letting three kids in her care wander a mile from home. a fast food restaurant manager found one boy, age 7 alone in the restaurant on saturday. his sibbings were found in a nearby field. she was caring for a baby inside while the older children played outside she said. the jurors at the john edwards trial went back at it today but still no verdict and tonight there's word the deliberations could stretch beyond friday the a verdict is not reached by then. and that is because some jurors want to attend family graduations. the former presidential candidate is accused of conspiring to violate election

laws to cover-up an affair. he could get up to 30 years in prison if he's convicted. edwards' attorneys argue that he did not knowingly break the law. the former rutgers student convicted of spying on his roommate with a cam will start serving the 30 day sentence tomorrow. ravi appeared in court today and he received the sentence for spying on his roommate. tyler clemente as he kissed another man in september 2010. just days later clemente killed himself. the judge said ravi doesn't deserve to be locked up with quote rapists and murders. still ahead rescue teams and italy pull a woman to safety. nearly half a day after the earthquake there trapped her beneath the rubble of her own home. >> also ahead, she's only 6 years old but can you spell potential spelling champ? the youngest ever to compete when we come back. >> well, the cold front is still to our west and we'll let you know if that's going to spawn any thunderstorms tonight

international outrage continues to grow as the violence in syria today. u. n. officials found more bodies shot execution style. >> and they are points the

finger squarely at the sir i can't government. danielle nottingham has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: lesli world leaders are renewing their calls for syria's president to step down and the united nations is scrambling to find a diplomatic solution to keep a cease fire agreement intact. syrians gathered in the street to bury another victim of the violence. now spinning out of control. wednesday, united nations' observers discovered 13 more bodies apparently shot execution style. that follows the massacre of more than 100 people in hula last week. u. n. investigators say the syrian government is responsible. the security council met wednesday to talk about what action to talk against syrian president bashar al-assad. >> the syrian government made commitments. it's blatantly violated those commitments and i think it's quite clear from many weeks if they continue to do so there

should be consequences. >> reporter: white house officials say although the options are on the table for now they're increasing the diplomatic pressure on the assad regime. the treasury department is putting new sanctions on a key syrian bank. and here at the embassy diplomats have been given 72 hours to leave the u.s.. several u.s. allies have also expelled syrian diplomats if their countries. -- from their countries. hundreds of monitors are trying to salvage a cease fire between president assad's forces and opposition fighters. >> i've said 15 months of violence. only very strong signals will have an impact. >> reporter: the syrian government denies any involvement in the hula massacre. saying armed terrorists were behind the killings. syrian rebels gave assad a 48 hour deadline to abide by the united nations' peace agreement or the rebels say the regime will face consequences. at the white house, danielle

nottingham, lesli, back to you. >> danielle. thank you. russia and china have been the roadblocks inside the council so far and they have rejected any tough action against syria. the former president of liberia charles taylor was sentenced the 50 years in prison today. the judge in the case says taylor is guilty of aiding, abetting and planning some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history. taylor helped rebels murder and mutilate thousands during their country's civil war. the sentence was handed down in an international criminal court near the hague. britain's supreme court has given the go ahead for wikileaks founder julian assange to be extradited to sweeten. he should be -- sweden. he should be sent to sweden to face sex crimes allegations. he was not in court when the ruling came down. >> the request for mr. assange's extradition has been lawfully made and his appeal against extradition is

accordingly dismissed. >> now julian assange did send a tweet to his online followers saying -- his lawyers immediately appealed. assange is accused of sexually assaulting two fall wikileaks -- female wikileaks volunteers in 2010 on a trip to sweden. he claims the allegations are political payback for his leaking thousands of document -- u.s. documents that are secret on his website. the death toll from yesterday's earthquake in italy is now up to 17. and rescue workers removed the bodies of the last victims from a factory this morning in the town of modola. but just last night a woman was pulled out of the rubble alive after she'd spent 12 hours in the ruins of her own home. the quake in northern italy injured 350 people and left 14,000 homeless. this would be the second deadly quake to hit italy in just the last two weeks. meantime a popular oklahoma city restaurant up in flames this morning. look at that. the flames swept through the red rock canyon grill in the

the windows. give the ac a rest and acs have been humming the past few days. 58 to 68 and winds turn northwest at 10 to 15. by morning mostly sunny and pleasant. air quality forecast to be code yellow which is moderate. quite frankly code green tomorrow i think. 60s and 70s and winds calm down northwest at 10. still a refreshing wind though. and then by afternoon, mostly sunny and beautiful. you'll need the shades. high temperatures in the low 80s and wind still northwesterly at about 10. really almost a perfect day tomorrow. we'll break it down. 58 to 678 to start and then 75 to 80 by noon. full sun and mostly sunny by evening 78 to about 83 just beautiful. now the next three days, again clouds come back on friday. showers and storms possible by early afternoon on friday. temps will struck toll get to 80 and then we're back to pleasant on saturday with temperatures in the upper 70s. in fact next seven days, sunday some showers are possible again only in the mid 70s.

those through lanes will be shut down. and they'll stay that way until monday morning. delays are expected to begin on the maryland side of the bridge so unless you'd like delays you might want to stay away from the area over weekend. there's an outcry tonight in chevy chase, maryland to spend $6,000 to buy some land because some residents claim there's a conflict of interest in the deal. the land is next to zimmerman park. the town council approved the plan even after a barrage of negative comments from residents. they're pointing out the property owner is the wife of the former mayor who used to be on the council. a metro workers is still in critical condition tonight. the accident happened yesterday at the shady grove rail yard. the worker became pinned under a train for about an hour. surgeons were called into the scene to help get him out. no passengers were on board. metro says the victim is a mechanic who's worked for metro for more than 25 years. well, short people in louisville, kentucky having a

she's only 6 years old and one of the biggest attractions at this year's scripps national spelling bee lori anne madison did well against about what, 276 contestants, many of them twice her age. and she's getting a whole lot of attention around here. anny hong was there and you got to see her s. p. e. l. l. her heart out right? >> yes, we did lesli. in fact we know every contestant who's made it this far is special in their own way but boy when you saw little lori anne get to the stage at the harbor you can feel the anticipation. the excitement and even i was nervous for her. but little lori anne made it pretty far and seize been creating national -- she has been creating national spelling bee history. lori anne madison may be the smallest at the scrippings national spelling bee but she's the biggest buzz this year as the youngest ever to qualify for the contest. >> dirigible. >> may i have the definition please? >> dirigible is an adjective

that means fearable. >> and wednesday morning's preliminaries, the 6-year-old from woodbridge, virginia bravely took the stage which she shared with contestants twice her age and she had no problem with her word. spelling it with confidence. >> dirigible. d. i. r. i. g. i. b. l. e.. dirigible. [ applause ] >> as you can imagine, lori anne's been getting a lot of media requests for interviews and she wasn't available today. she is only 6 years old and she is overwhelmed. regardless she has become a little celebrity around here. >> i've seen a lot of people just going to her and getting her autograph. >> i know that when i was 6 years old i would not be able to spell those words so it's really inspiring and i don't know her but i'm really proud of her. >> reporter: lori anne is homeschooled and recently won the prince william bee with the

students at kent garden elementary. >> reporter: kristin fisher has more from the naturalization ceremony this morning in mclean. ♪ >> reporter: these are the final moments before richard gordon becomes is u.s. citizen. it's a moment that's been nearly 20 years in the making. >> i came to america in 1993 and had a place at the embassy. i brought my wife and two young daughters. >> reporter: the australian has been teaching sixth grade english and history at kent garden elementary for 11 years. >> mr. gordon is a really great teacher. >> he always makes learning fun. >> reporter: but his students have had a special assignment. help mr. gordon pass the naturalization test. >> we went through the questions. they quizzed me. i quizzed them. >> he had to bring us doughnuts and he only got one wrong out of like 100 questions. >> i passed the test and here i am today. a new american citizen. [ applause ]

>> it was enormously touching. i had no idea it was going to be this big. it's a wonderful country and i hope i can give back to america what they've give on the me and my family. >> reporter: he was the star here today but there were 18 other people from 18 different countries that also became citizens at the ceremony. >> to see the other cultures that were represented and you looked through that audience and you saw students who maxed out with the people who were inducted today. it is actually living history. and it is awesome. >> all right -- girls. i hope these kids take away how special it is and don't take the citizenship for granted. it is something to be cherished and loved. thank you guys. americans are a different way. some are naturalized and some are born but we're all american citizens. thank you honey. thank you sydney. >> reporter: in mac lean, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> last year the u.s. welcomed nearly 700,000 citizens through the naturalization ceremonies

in tonight's health alert federal health officials have a warning for consumers and doctors about counterfeit versions of the drug adderall that are being sold online. the fda says the fake versions of the 30-milligram dose of the drug have the wrong activity ingredient -- active ingredient. the fake pill is ineffective and could be harmful. they are round, white and don't have any type of markings. which is letters or numbers, that's a warning sign. this drug is made by teva
