as we're expecting some strong to severe storms to move in by mid the late afternoon. 72 light now with the cloudy skies and 79 by noon. the mid and later parts of the afternoon, the evening that's when we'll have the thunderstorms around. you see a few showers this morning that are coming up into the area from southern virginia. lots of showers and storms from the carolinas and georgia all the way up through michigan and that area is moving east slowly and when we heat up our atmosphere with the daytime heating we're going to increase the threat for severe weather later on. along i-66 and south but in southern maryland a few heavy downpours here. east of la plata. not too far from benedict and huesville into baden and southeastern prince george's county, northern st. mary's going to calvert as well. you've got some rain headed your way and the morning temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. now monika now at 6:00 a.m. with the timesaver traffic. as howard's been saying with the severe weather coming in i think it might be a good

idea to head out to work early and head home early as well. and avoid what that could do to the roadways this afternoon. in the meantime right now, the beltway looks great and coming in from the west no issues to report on the airport on the toll road or manassas. you have the delay right now route 50 to 123 and inside the beltway right now live to the roosevelt bridge. very quiet into the downtown area but downtown on connecticut avenue right at dupont circle there was a break from yesterday still affecting the roadway. connecticut avenue n street as well around the circle. back to the maps this time from the north, no problems to report on 270 out of frederick. i-70 as well a big of slow traffic right here as you head in toward urbanna and a live look outside. here's what it looks like on the beltway in silver spring on the outer loop no delays. coming up in my next report, we'll go to the south side of town at 6:12. back to you. thanks monika. just a horrible start to the summer in one prince george's county neighborhood.

five children who were playing in the driveway hit by an suv. in what appears to be a terrible accident. >> all are hospitalized this morning. this accident happened last night along hannon street near drexel street in the lewis dale neighborhood. delia goncalves is live at the children's medical center. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning andrea. u know we know the five children are still here at the hospital suffering from injuries that range from serious to critical at this point and doctors are certainly taking a very close look and keeping an eye on the children. cell phone video taken at the scene thoughs emts working on the victims shortly after this crash happened. the pois and girls range in age if -- boys and girls range in age from 11 to just 1.35 years old. the woman behind the wheel one of the children's mother. she was she behind the wheel to have suv and she never saw the children playing when she backed up the vehicle crushing those kids.

>> lady -- started the vehicle and backed up and five children were struck. the vehicle continued and lodged into the garage that is in the rear portion of that house. >> reporter: a very tragic situation and police are saying this could be an accident at this point. but just how far and how fast was this suv traveling when those kids were struck? we'll have that part of the story coming up at 6:30. back to you. >> thank you delia goncalves. she's reporting live outside children's hospital this morning. and an 18-year-old is in critical condition in montgomery county after being hit by a car. the driver took off. this happened yesterday afternoon along center hill street in wheaton. maryland. police say the man was walking home and he was only a block away from his home when he was hit. they're not sure ha led up to him being struck but they want to find the driver soon. thousands of people crowded into the washington convention center thursday to celebrate

>> oh fantastic i was going to say this is the time of year people are booking their vacations. summer vacation season upon for us and that means staying in a hotel for lot of folks but you will want to budget more mike this year. we're going to look at the numbers here. spr says the average price for a hotel stay expected to jump 4% this summer. the average room rate $107 but you can double triple and even quadruple that rate and really expensive cities. one way is to cut down on all the extra fees. just like the airline industry, hotels are looking for ways to raise revenue and adding fees and service charges as one way they're doing just that. here's someways to beat the ways. educate yourself. before you book and for a list of things the hotel charges for. for example the rates for self- parking versus valet parking. these rates can be really high and then ask to have these fees waived as a condition of booking the room. consider staying in an independent hotel or a b and b.

privately owned properties often compete with the big guys on price so you're not going to be charged for things like parking. find some alternatives. website hotelchatter says the average rate for wi-fi is $14 a day nowadays, now of course the $2 cup of coffee at a local coffee shop that's cheaper for a quick surf of the web. look before you tip. for example some hotels already include gratuity for housekeeping services. and bring your own website moneytalksnews suggests you bring your own beach towels because some hotels are actually charging for them now. same goes for snacks avoid the mini bar fees. never good when the kids move into the room and they immediately head to the mini bar and start getting out snickers bars. >> to keep cool? >> not so happy about that. >> you have to bring an accountant to go on vacation these days. >> i hate nickel and diming kind of stuff. i kind of say charge me a

metro seeing some sprinkles but south and east of town especially across areas like lower prince george's county and eastern prince william, baden and coming to calvert county. not quite to plum point yet but it will be tracking up to you. shady side also and delia this in the next 30, 45 minutes as it exits as well. and you'll notice even into clinton and brandy wine couple of sprinkles heeded your direction. temperatures the morning 67s to low 70s. 66 in college park at 65 in crofton. cloudy outside here in washington. on the michael & son weather camera. with 72 degrees. light southeast winds and humidity high at 84%. we'll see the first batch of showers move north and not do too much this morning. lunchtime is okay. watch what happens in the middle of the afternoon though the evening hours the storms and showers pop and a strong line of storms coming through

day. here's the live look at the patuxent river in st. mary's county. 68 degrees there right now. some showers moving through southern maryland right now but the big problems are coming this afternoon. >> thank you for starting your friday with us. i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm mike hydeck, meteorologist howard bernstein is live on the weather terrace. >> good morning mike. good morning everybody. i've got the umbrella with me although it's closed. out in calvert, st. mary's charles county. some heavier showers out of virginia earlier and that's gain it can case for another couple of hours, but the bigger concern is for the afternoon, this evening and for the first part of tonight. here's a look at the day planner really think we'll be okay through at least the middle of the day. a light shower this morning. 80 at noon and then low 89s for highs. but boy the afternoon commute could be really difficult there. you notice national on the hour at 6:00 a.m. reporting a few light sprinkles. one area of rain coming over virginia but it's very, very light. showers and storms to the west and they're in the as strong as

they're going to be later when we get into the maximum heating of the day. we zoom in on the dopplers and you'll see this area of light rain that's been pushing through with some heavier showers south and east now into northern calvert county almost in towards southern anne arundel. right over the poeticsen river right now. temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. winds aren't too strong but to 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 things are going to get much, much more activity and we'll likely have some sort of weather watches posted later. topper and anny will have you posted this afternoon and this evening. covering the traffic this morning is the one and only monika samtani. north of lounge on the outer loop, the -- town on the outer loop, the right side of the screen is at university boulevard and you have that slow traffic coming around from th95 interchange. off and on just like this into silver spring. all lanes are open thankfully. to the maps now as you saw the north side of town is fine. but on the south sides of town we've got a bet of a delay.

>> all right erica. a good real live test run for the olympics in another few weeks too. outragics situation here at home. -- a tragic situation here at home. five children run other by an you have -- over by an suv in prince george's county. >> the five children were rushed to children's national medical center and that's where delia goncalves is live this morning. >> reporter: the children's injuries range from serious to critical and the driver behind the wheel of the suv one of the victim's mother. 9news now obtained cell phone video taken from the scene of the victims just minutes after last night's crash. police say the boys and girls range in ages from 11 to just 1.5 years olds. there were playing in the driveway we're told just before 9:00 p.m. when the mom who tells police

she never saw the children backed up that vehicle. >> really is no more than a total distance, 75 to 100 feet. i don't believe she's the mother of all the children. >> reporter: now police are not sure just how fast she was traveling but it was a very short distance and they don't believe she was traveling too fast. they do believe just a very tragic accident. again the children all here at the hospital and injuryings ranging from serious to critical. mike, andrea back to you. >> thank you delia goncalves with that update live outside children's hospital this morning. we could learn later today the identity of human remains found in the freezer in harford county, maryland. this is a really disgusting and sad story. 21-year-old alexander kinyua admits to eating his dead friend's brain and heart. authorities say kinyua quickly confessed but just couldn't explain why he killed the man. the neighbors are shocked. >> it's horrible.

we cannot believe what has taken place. we see the family coming and going. they've always seemed like really good people. i mean, they are good people so we can't believe what's happened. >> kinyua remains behind bars charged with first degree murder. still 18 months away from virginia voters picking a new governor but a candidate from the 2009 race is considering running once again. the "washington post" is reporting democrat mcauliffe has nearly 400 party activists supporting is candidacy for him. the post says he is telling supportest he's going to do it. he lost the democratic primary back in 2009. it is 6:35. jessica doyle is watching your money and your jobs. >> jobs, jobs joshes, the numbers are coming out today. >> don't expect a huge amount of good news in the report. of course all eyes will be on the government's latest unemployment report due out at 8:30 this morning. amists expect the hay -- analysts expect the unemployment rate held steady.

now while that growth in payrolls would be better than the previous couple of months, it would be still well below the winter's pace of 252,000 jobs each month. economists predict the report today will show the private sector grow by about 160 tow jobs but the government lost over 10,000. the airlines keep adding fees to our tickets but they warn in congress don't raise fees on the major carriers through higher taxes. it comes after senate appropriations sub committee voted a week and a half ago to double the security fee on plane tickets to $5. the higher fees strongly opposed in house. at "usa today" they report the airline industry is arguing that transportation and tourism are just too important to the u.s. economy to be hamstrung with higher taxes and more regulations. piece salt hut is taking on subway with a new menu offering, it's a baked sandwich. the pizzalo is a sub but the fixings are baked inside.

thunderstorms. this morning the moisture coming in from virginia across d.c. but south and east of town live doppler 9000 hd, we're looking at it and the very light sprinkles up in montgomery and loudoun county and fairfax county but areas now in southern maryland to the east coming out of north beach up to dl, this is going to shadyside. some more moderate downpours there. and even in toward upper marlboro some loiter rain showers back into areas in southeast prince george's county. much more active later. the temperatures low 70s here in town with 67 in fredericksburg and 66 in winchester and luray. cumberland in the upper 50s this morning with easton at 64 and as we look outside on michael & son weather camera, plenty of clouds out there over the capitol here. some light sprinkles at 6:00 a.m. but it's been dry here in northwest and 72. a light south southeast wind at about 6 miles an hour. the showers the morning. not really doing much. midday we're okay. watch what happens as we go through the afternoon into the

evening hours. now the showers and storms pop area-wide. 6:00 p.m. some strong to severe storms in spots. this line really firms up about 8:45, 9:00 coming through the area. this could be the strongest area of weather we're going to see. that will start to pull away as we get past midnight for sure and tomorrow the sun returns early. so we're actually looking pretty good for the weekend. got any plants outside, maybe the -- i'll see you there. looks fine. 83 degrees. thunderstorms this afternoon. severe weather alert day. hail, damaging winds and potentially isolated tornadoes not out of the question. 50s and 60s tonight and we're going to start to clear after midnight. 76 tomorrow very niece. sunday 79 and another decent day. slight chance of a shower with monday and tuesday and even sunday there's a slight chance but i'm going to keep it out of the forecast. temperatures holding in the 70s with the better chance soft showers -- of showers later tuesday into early wednesday. andrea? >> thank you howard.
