i'm delighted to be one-on- one today with tavis smiley and dr. cornell west. they are authors of a new book called "the rich and the rest of us." i want to know which category are you in? [ laughter ] isn't this a delight to have you here with me. first off, why did you do this and how did the two of you get together? >> well, we met about 25 years ago. and i've been blessed to have him as a younger brother. i'm his older brother and we said we was going to be true to the legacy of martin luther king jr. and the rabbi and
12:10 pm
dorothy day. poor people being precious and priceless and they ought to be at the center of how we view america and world. >> what was goal of the book? to try to make priority a prior -- poverty a priority in the country. >> no president has said that. we all remember johnson's war on poverty but since then poor people have been rendered invisible. the word poverty didn't come up one time in three presidential debates with obama and mccain. obama didn't raise it, obama didn't raise it. you fast forward two years, one out of two of us is either in or near poverty. that's 150 million people either in poverty or low income. just a paycheck or two away. this is the moral and spiritual issue of our time. and we can't have another campaign for the white house where this issue, poor people and poverty, doesn't get addressed. >> we just said that the economy is the number one priority on most peoples' minds. when they read your book, what will they learn?
12:11 pm
>> they will learn that we need high quality jobs. we need decent housing. we need quality education and we need that more than we need drones, military buildup, jails, and prisons. right now, we live in a society that has warped priorities. >> all right -- >> comes to jails and prisons we find the money. with education and housing and jobs with a living wage, we cut, cut, cut. >> let me ask you, what is your opinion on the candidates? the president? and of course the republican candidate now who is going to be representing the republicans. >> i think for me it's for both of us it's just no real choice. you know, brother -- >> no real choice? >> not real. >> what do you mean? >> mitt romney would be catastrophic, mitt romney would be. now barack obama, we have our criticism of him and we want him to be much more diligent and talking about and working for poor and working people but
12:12 pm
he's much better for the country than mitt romney. >> the whole system is unjust and poverty is not a black thing or a brown thing or a red thing. it's an american catastrophe that's about to be cemented. republicans are poor. democrats are poor. one out of two or out of are in poverty, that means a whole lot of people of all kinds of races and colors and creeds are wrestling with the issue. both of them romney and obama had better start talking about this sooner than later. >> you've been touring with book all over the country. washington, d.c. is the last stop. >> last stop. >> and you're going to have -- >> brother bishop and staples at temple of praise. >> you're going to be tonight at the temple of praise. starting at 7:00. people can come. they can see you. they can get a copy of the book. temple of praise is located 700 southern avenue, southeast. of course you'll be there to answer any questions and the fact to that of you together -- two of you together is outstanding. >> jc one-on-one tonight without jc. >> okay. >> it won't be the same without
12:13 pm
you. >> okay if you want to know about our history, the economy, where we should go and where we are, you want to copy of -- a copy of "the rich and the rest of us." tavis smiley, dr. cornell west, what a delight and an honor. thank you. >> thank you. >> we salute you. >> thank you. we're here with severe weather alert day. howard will be next with the forecast. stay with us.

today the identity of human remains found in a freezer and harford county, maryland. 21-year-old alexander kinyua admits to eating his dead friend's brain and heart. the suspect's brother led police to the remains. authorities say that kinyua quickly confessed but could not explain why he killed the man. neighbors of course are shocked. >> it's horrible. we cannot below what has taken place. we see the family coming and going. they've always seemed like really good people. i mean they are good people so question within believe what's happen -- we can't believe what's happened. >> kinyua is behind bars and has been charged with first degree murder. thousands crowded into the walter e. washington convention center yesterday to celebrate the life and legacy of chuck brown. d.c. council chairman kwame brown says that chuck brown gave many long time -- residents a -- d.c. residents a
12:17 pm
sounds track to their lives. >> go-go is to washington, d.c. what jazz is to new orleans. like country music is to nashville, tennessee. like rap music is to new york city. but he's the godfather of go- go. >> the council chairman proposed is go-go hall of fame -- a go-go hall of fame and mayor vincent gray proposed a park in chuck brown's honor. a replica of a space shuttle is going to be on a barge heading to its new home at the space center in houston. and once the explorer is docked, a truck will haul the shuttle about a mile to its new home on sunday. a parade is also planned. the move from the dock to the space center houston is expected the take about three hours -- to take about three hours. all right, we are looking at a severe weather alert day. right now. this afternoon and a couple of
12:18 pm
hours, where do things stand? >> yeah, looks like the late afternoon is going to be the bigger problem into the evening hours. if you have plans tonight going to go out maybe go to the ballpark, you've got to stay up on the weather. i think they're going to try to get the game in. some rain delays and probably will but we have the potential for some very strong thunderstorms here into the late afternoon and evening. right now we have a couple of showers and storms just off to the west but they're not -- they're not the big active stuff. let's get uh-uh started with a look at the day planner for the afternoon. mostly sunny skies and a few breaks here and there. temperatures into the low 80ss and it's breezy. winds out of the southeast at 15 to 20. later into the afternoon and evening hours now, 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00. we could have some pretty intense thunderstorms pushing through here with some hail, some damaging winds potentially, and even isolated tornadoes won't be out of the question. and some -- of course heavy downpours. here's live doppler 9000 hd, just some ground clutter in and around the immediate metro
12:19 pm
area. a few showers to dahlgren here out of richmond but west of town here into madison, rappahannock counties, culpeper pushing in toward fauquier county now, seeing the showers tracking up the lees bug right now. -- leesburg right now. here's amosville, here's warrenton. this is west of 17. getting to 66 so you going out 66 you get past the plains and marshall on the way out to i- 81. seeing some of the storms. on the west kind of win chest -- side of winchester a few heavier showers in the next little while but this is not the big show by any stretch. that's going to happen later this afternoon. here's the bigger picture, this is what weapon just looking at -- we were just looking at but look at the loin of storms from ohio and charleston and tabriz toll now and tennessee and -- to bristol now and tennessee and virginia. with the sunny breaks we're seeing, we're starting to heat things up and that's just going to add to the instability. and with the heat temperatures now low 80s in norfolk.
12:20 pm
83 degrees. 70 cumberland but ocean city is 72 along with charlottesville. to the beach not see the storms there until midnight or even after. locally temperatures in the mid 70s in rockville. 77 for stirling. manassas is 79 and even in columbia 74 and commands doctor. 80. -- alexandria. 80. outside on the michael & son weather camera, there's the beltway here, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures are holding near 80 degrees at reagan national. with the clouds east winds at 15 although we've had gusts over 20. and look at this dew point, this number is 70. that's a tropical number. feels like florida out there. and that's just another ingredient for heavier rains and potential thunderstorms. so as we look at the headlines severe weather alert day. round one really happening now to 3:00. the stuff we're looking out west. not nearly as impressive as i think around 2:00 is going to be between oh 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. with the hail and damaging winds and heavy rains and even an isolated tornado. big picture we have the storms
12:21 pm
going down almost to atlanta on the tail end of this line. that's when we'll be watching for the next oh 12 hours or so. it's going to come across the region. first little wave over the next few hours coming through. in the late afternoon isolated showers here. but here's the line of storms approaching the virginia, west virginia line. by 7:00 maybe to poolesville and frederick coming out of myersville and over to culpeper and maybe by 9:00, 10:00. sometime then, a very strong line of storms will likely be coming through. so looking at the forecast, severe weather alert day today. likely to see some sort of watch later this afternoon. 83. tonight, 60s in town and some upper 50s as we clear out after midnight. mid 70s for your saturday and a nice day. sunday upper 70s and you know there could be a couple of showers sunday afternoon. i think the better chance monday afternoon and an even better chance later tuesday into wednesday. as temperatures top out only in the low 70s. we'll be right back. oh it smells great in here. 9news now at noon returns in just a moment.
