there's more than a million opportunities to do good. why not do it? >> peggy fox, 9news now. >> now along that same note, one viewer has offered to transport that new wheelchair. melissa is still hoping whoever took her old chair will bring it back so she can pass it along. would you be able to get out of a metro tunnel if there was an emergency? a new report out suggesting metro was ignoring complaints on blocked emergency exits. bruce leshan with reaction from the station. >> metro exits blocked and locked, screams the washington examiner. after looking back at thousands of inspection reports on metro's emergency exits. the problems could leave riders stuck underground in a crisis and the problems either took too long to fix or were never fixed at all. >> that concerns me.

they allowed it to go as long as it's gone. >> inspectors found bushes, a hive of angry bees, and a locked emergency exit door at congress heights. they found an exit sign that would have pointed fleeing passengers in exactly the wrong direction at capital south. and at medical center, the ground around the commit is sinking. >> we are working to improve safety every day on this system. we'll continue to do that. it will be a never ending job, we'll continue to pay attention to it. >> the oversight commission complained repeatedly about the blocked exits. it complained in 2007 and again in 2010. metro promised the inspector's reports would be moved much more quickly up the chain of command. but now the commission says it turns out that promise has never been fully implemented. >> you are never going to get to everything. you will never have a perfect system. there's going to be risks. you need to get where you are

going. if it was major safety violation, i guess you would reconsider. >> metro's gm says he has hired a fire marshal to ensure that these safety concerns are paramount, but the safety commission that oversees metro wants to know why the transit agency told it years ago that it had procedures in place and did not. at the station in northwest, 9news now. >> if more and more of you are leaving your cars home and taking public transportation. the nonprofit american transportation association says that americans use public transit services, that includes trains, 2.7 billion times in the first quarter of 2012. and commuters made up 60% of those trips. ridership is up 5%. that's compared to the same period last year. the organization credits the high cost of gasoline and

better, more reliable transit systems. fairfax county police are upping the antifor the serial animal slasher. in one month, there have been two attacks on farm animals. last week, someone got into the barn, cult henry the calf across the head and slashed two goats and chickens. this comes one month to the day after three horses were stabbed in a nearby field. police don't have very many leads, so now the community is coming together raising $7500 in reward money for anybody that can come up with information leading to an arrest. >> at this point, we don't have a lot of physical evidence we can talk about that would link them. however, logically makes sense we'll be working both of them. >> hard to imagine who would do this to defenseless animals, but until that suspect or suspects are caught, police and park staff are working together to beef up security at the

farm. a 31-year-old woman is under arrest following a deadly stabbing in d.c. this one happened this morning, 3400 block of 13th place. that's in southeast. and the victim is identified as 28-year-old amber kent. she was in her apartment when she was stabbed in the back. her young daughter right there with her. a friend of the victim says she stopped the suspect as she went to a nearby school to pick up her daughter. >> you cannot get your daughter today, not today. you can step up here, right here in this corner. that's when the officer came over and placed the handcuffs. >> now that suspect is identified as marie alvin of southeast. we don't have a motive yet and the whole thing has a lot of questions. all right, today marked the 70th anniversary of the battle of midway. a wreath laying ceremony was layed today. the battle of midway is credited with changing the court of the campaign in world

circumstances. zimmerman's lawyer says his client needs to apologize and explains why he and his wife hid more than $100,000 that had been raised online for his defense fund. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the death of trayvon martin. unless a judge grants him a new bond, he'll have to stay in jail throughout that trial. there are reports that the accused east coast rapist plans to use an insanity defense when he goes on trial. aaron thomas is due in a manassas courtroom friday for a hearing. according to court filings obtained by wtop, thomas' lawyers plan to question the sanity of their client at the time of his alleged crimes. thomas is accused of raping two teenage girls and attacking another on halloween night in 2009. dna is linked him to 14 other attacks in virginia, maryland, and connecticut over two decades. well, can we make it four spectacular spring days in a row? topper will be here with the

man busted into a bank and grabbed $100,000, but he got stuck in an air duct. the officer swarmed the bank of america saturday night after the robber entered the vault through the ceiling. he tried to get out the same way, but he didn't get very far. it took 12 hours to find the suspect in the duct and cut him out. you know what got him stuck? a wig of dread locks he had on that got caught and tried to get out. and they had to cut him out. >> easier coming down than going p. >> it was his dread locks. >> money is heavy. >> in more ways than one. >> all right, 75 today. just beautiful. a little below average. i don't think anyone is going to complain below average temperatures as we go through june, july, and august. let's look outside.
