gang that duped a buoy resident by posing as pepco workers. it all ended when the man was shot to death during a robbery. today a jury decided john haskin's fate. >> matt jablow is joining us with the details. >> reporter: it's one of those stories that leaves you wondering why. a buoy resident killed in cold blood during a small-time robbery in his own home. it's a case that even veteran prosecutors found extremelydisturbing. >> it's horrific. >> reporter: today, the case was closed. >> and this defendant is facing life, plus 60 years. >> reporter: it was july 12th of last year when craig brooks posing as a pepco employee came to the buoy home of 44-year-old david williams. brooks walked all around the house talking about various electrical issues, but in fact he was casing the joint. the next day he came back to the house with his codefendant, and this time they tied williams up, shot him to death and robbed the place.

>> they picked up everything they could find, money, coins, children's videos. >> reporter: brooks pleaded guilty last month. today after 2 1/2 hours of deliberations a jury convicted hastin of first degree murder. >> they could have just taken the property but they chose to kill mr. williams and walk out of the door. >> reporter: the state's attorney called the murder entirely sensely and is hoping today a swift verdict sends an unmistakable message. >> anyone who chooses to act in this way, who chooses to rob, to murder the citizens of this county, we will do everything that we can to bring them to justice. >> reporter: he will be sentenced on july 20th. david williams leaves behind his fiancee and daughter. the total take from the robbery was about $1,200. anita, derek. >> what a waste. new information right now on that story about the

suspected can ballistic -- cannibalistic killer. he's accused of killing his roommate and eating his heart. it happened in maryland last week. now we're learning one expert says he was a virginia tech waiting to happen. that's according to a senior military instructor at morgan state university. apparently the reference was made when staff sergeant robert edwards filed a report following his outburst on campus back in december. he was banned from campus until meeting with school officials. could blocks at exits cause more chaos during a crisis situation at metro stations? the metro examiner poured through thousands of inspection reports and found the nonusable emergency exits could leave riders trapped underground in an emergency situation. problems were taking too long to fix or never fixed at all. they say they're always looking to improve safety for its riders. the two most senior battalion chiefs say he's creating a culture of fear and

intimidation for retribution. the man say they're being punished for reaching disciplinary decisions that were less harsh than what the chief wanted. gary nurenberg is here with what the men had to say. >> reporter: it started with a grateful citizen who wanted to thank firefighters for saving his home. he brought two 12-pack of beers to express gratitude. told by firefighters they could not accept the gift, he left it on the floor and walked away. >> they didn't handle it right. there was no intentional misconduct. >> reporter: battalion chief richard stern presided over two disciplinary cases when beer was found at the fire station and ordered a letter of reprimand be put into firefighter files. >> i considered all the facts. i listened to what they had to say. and i made a decision. apparently the fire chief or somebody didn't like my decision. >> reporter: he was demoted to captain. the fire chief writing your

failure to hold the members accountable for the receipt of the beer in violation of the rules of conduct brings into question your ability to exercise proper judgment in the performance of your assigned duties and responsibilities. >> i was transferred immediately because i did not go with the fire chief's wishes to suspend a member who was not guilty of an offense. >> reporter: battalion chief kevin sloan presided over another beer case and did not hand out a harsh punishment. his duties have been changed. >> i'm an expert in incident command, rail emergencies, hazardous materials responses. >> what are you doing now? >> i'm the battalion chief in charge of toilet paper. >> reporter: chief eller by denies he is fostering a culture of fear and intimidation. >> nobody angered me. there's no reason to be afraid of making a right decision. >> reporter: he says he can't comment on chief stern's case because it is being appealed. >> regarding chief sloan, he was not demoted. his transfer was contemplated

weeks before it was affected and weeks before he made any discipline area decision. >> >> reporter: chief ellerby says the rules have not been followed. legal remedies are being pursued by the chiefs. they say others are afraid of retaliation and retribution, a fear that chief ellerby insists is unfounded. the attorney for george zimmerman is busy tonight with damage control. zimmerman is charged in the death of teenager trayvon martin. the defense attorney asked for a brand new bond hearing. zimmerman had been out on bond but was then ordered back to jail over the past weekend when the judge accused zimmerman of hiding the fact that the defense fund website had

collected about 200,000 dollars in donations. the defense attorney says zimmerman knows that he messed up. >> i think the family made a mistake. i think it was out of fear and maybe some frustration. >> the judge might agree to release zimmerman again, but this time after he posts a much higher bond or he could keep zimmerman behind bars until the trial, and that might not start for months. jury selection is expected to start tomorrow in the child sex abuse trial of jerry sandusky. he's the former assistant football coach at penn state. today the pennsylvania supreme court rejected sandusky's request for a delay in the trial. he's accused of abusing ten boys over a 15-year span and several of his alleged victims are expected to take the witness stand. longer bar hours and more traffic cameras could soon be coming to the district of columbia as part of a $9.4 billion budget the city council is expected to vote on tomorrow. it also allows changes to parking fees that could bring

in $3 million extra dollars a year. stay tuned. in campaign 2012 news, forget everything else. experts say the economy is the number one issue in this presidential election. president obama is spending $10 million on an ad attacking mitt romney's record as governor of massachusetts. the romney campaign says it would happily compare the president's record with the record in massachusetts while romney led the state. the president said that attacking romney's business record might not be such a hot political idea. the white house maintains that clinton is firmly behind president obama's re-election and they see eye to eye. >> president clinton has completely supported president obama's approach, and has thoroughly endorsed obama as someone who has the right vision economically for moving this country forward. >> he's a president who's in love with the sound ever his own voice but hasn't been able

to follow through on too many promises. >> mitt romney spent today raising campaign cash in the pacific northwest. voters head to the polls in the governor's recall election that could send shock waves across the whole country. the election is happening because enough people are furious over governor scott walker's decision to strip bargaining rights from most public unions. he's trying to defend off a challenge from another man. why is this election getting so much national attention? >> i think the real reason is that the issues go across borders. these aren't just parochial wisconsin issues. >> well, president clinton has been campaigning for barrett and president obama tweeted his support for him a few hours ago. republican governors have come out in support of walker. if teams like the political battles might be more intense you might be on to something. >> according to a new survey,

caught on tape, take a look at what happens when this school bus driver decides, seat belts optional. oh, no. the 73-year-old man is thrown out of his seat, barely holding on to the steering wheel before he tumbles down into the stairwell. the bus then crashes into a carmel, indiana, home. luckily the driver was the only person on board. nobody seriously hurt. school district reminds every driver, watch the video. then you'll know you ought to buckle up. sometimes you've got to take drastic action, especially if you have 14 kids to feed and no money coming in. >> natalie sue man, octomom confirms she'll be doing strip videos. lots of sun can damage your

skin. this picture published in the new england journal of medicine puts a face to that warning. check it out carefully. this truck driver, 69 years old, been on the road for 28 years. look how the window side of his face has suffered extensive damage. it looks a heck of a lot older than the other side of his face. that is just freakish. >> in tonight's health alert in colleges around the nation are buzzing about the first smart bomb against breast cancer. the drug builds on the success of the first gene therapy for a certain type of breast cancer that's really aggressive. this new approach seems to keep women with advanced cases living longer. >> it is first of its kind, so it's a combination of ante body, chemo therapy and it seems to be working. >> the ex site is very real and just -- the excitement is very real and justified. the clinical tests are going on

now. a duke university team revealed how the smart bomb works. researchers combined reaccept tants with a chemotherapy so toxic it can't be given on its own. the two are linked up. >> drug delivers a toxin that can get into the cell and kill the cell and minimize the collateral damage to the other cells we sometimes see. >> very little side effects compared to the conventional chemo therapies. >> the scientists tests it in women with widely spreading breast cancer, comparing it to those getting a combo of the only other treatment approved for these advanced cases. two years later, 65% of the women getting tdm1 were alive compared to 40% of the control group. doctors don't know yet how great the survival benefits may be. exciting news to be sure for women like mary of bethesda. she had her two positive breast cancer and know she may need a

new and powerful ally in the future. >> if anything happened in the future, the possibility of me actually using something like this would be great. i had breast cancer in my right breast. so if i ever got it again, if i got it in the left side, you know, maybe this would be a possibility, and it wouldn't take me down. >> the treatment is experimental. the maker hopes to have it on the market within a year's time. again, what thrills the doctors and patients like mary so much is that tdm1 doesn't cause the toxic side effects of chemotherapy but still seems to kill the cancer. >> that's good news, ladies. >> it is. >> good stuff. remember friday? remember the crazy friday? severe weather. >> friday was a severe weather alert day. but here's the thing. some days it isn't quite red but is a nuisance type day. we may start labeling the next three days in codes on 9 weather alerts. here's the deal, if it's green, you're okay.

just some light activity. nothing super heavy heading our way, north and west of town anyway. there are showers and thunderstorms down to the south. in fact, this is a pretty big thunderstorm, moved heading toward charles county. heavy rains with that but nothing severe. this is going to be the pattern for the next couple of days. not going to be an all-day affair but we will have unsettled weather. satellite picture and radar combined, there's d.c. notice more showers to the north and west of us in pennsylvania. these are pinwheeling on down, too. look for showers overnight and also into your tuesday morning, it looks like. here's the deal. in the morning, a light jacket, a good idea. we're talking temps in the 50s. even downtown lows will be in the 50s tonight. showers possible again on tuesday. wetter on wednesday. a little better chance for showers on wednesday. then warmer on thursday. consequently, a better chance of thunderstorms on thursday as we get warmer air in here. temps almost back to average by thursday. overnight, partly to mostly

cloudy, cool. a few showers. low temps in the 50s. winds east/northeast at about 10:00. by tomorrow morning, partly sunny and school. showers and light rain possible early on. 50s and 60s. i think we'll see sunshine. by afternoon, clouds come back. some showers, light rain possible. not looking for much. a high temperature between 70 and 75 and winds easterly at about 5 to 10. the next three days we'll break it down for you. i'm on the fence about tomorrow. i'll give it a green even though we have showers. wednesday and thursday will be yellow alert days. so it will be wet roads on wednesday and a few thunderstorms on thursday. temps go up though. low 70s on wednesday. by thursday, we are in the mid to upper 70s. next seven days, it may be some morning showers on friday. then temps go back to almost average, near 80 degrees. then it's going to heat up over the weekend. mid-80s on saturday, beautiful. near 90 on sunday, hitting 90 on monday during an isolated shower or thunderstorm possible. the 9 alerts, we hope they help

some guys named strasburg, gonzalez, harper, zimmerman and we have a team in first place, that hasn't changed anything has it? all i know is the post summertime sports phase got a lot more interesting than it used to be. i probably wouldn't be waiting for another invitation to get back out to nationals park. maybe it's never too late to begin to understand and to appreciate a sport that folks in other towns like philadelphia might take for granted. for me, learning to love the washington nationals almost qualifies as a sports miracle. but let's be real, it's not. a miracle would be learning to fall in love all over again with the washington wizards. kristen, are you feeling me? >> i'm feeling you, derek, but i do have good news for you tonight. the washington nationals, it's draft night. they've done pretty well in their last three drafts. harper, strasburg. tonight they pick up another young arm, but he does come

the washington wizards now get a full season to see what randy whitman can do with this team. they announced today they have retained whitman as head coach, agreeing to a two-year deal. he went 18 and 31 after taking over for flip saunders midway through this lockout shortened season instilling a little more accountability among his players, the team won eight of their last ten games. randy whitman says he was encouraged by the way his team closed out the season. >> for a team to come out and battle like this team did, that showed me a lot that these guys with have a lot of pride and a lot of heart. >> they played hard for him and played the right way. there are things he asked them to do on the floor.

it's nice the players said something verbally, but i think they spoke louder by the actions on the court. >> game five of the nba finals, thunder, spurs all tied up at 2. thunder up one, fast break off the turnover. kevin durante to russell westbrook who finishes with the alley-oop. puts the thunder up 3. right now they are up 9. game ongoing. the nationals came up big tonight in the mlb draft. they didn't have the number one pick, but got a player that many thought would have been, if not for some injury issues. with their 16th overall pick, the nationals selected jileto, a 17-year-old right-handed pitcher from california. earlier this season he was considered to be the topic until a strained ligament in his elbow scared some teams away. for the nats, 100 miles an hour fastball made him worth the
