little rain coming in. that would be generally well south of town as we go through the next hour or two and then we'll just watch for an isolated shower this afternoon. here's a look at the day planner. we're expecting a cool day for june. only the upper 60s by lunch time with a northeast wind at 8. with the sunshine it should feel all right and highs only the low 70s. that will be about 10 degrees below average. 70 at 5:00 p.m. with 71, 72 for the high later on. this morning we watched some showers. light to moderate ones have been coming down the bay. areas in calvert, anne arundel, st. mary's especially seeing n. as we look at live doppler 9hd, we see some showers go down i- 95, east of spotsylvania coming at a pretty good clip. calvert county into st. mary es, along the patuxent. that's where we're seeing more moderate showers and southeastern prince george's county as well. temperatures, they're nice. for this time of year to be in the mid-50s in frederick, 61 in manassas and annapolis, we're down to 59 in d.c. with 45 in

oakland and garrett county going up into the low 70s. here's monika right now. she's in with your time saver traffic. there was a horrible accident overnight in dickerson on route 28 at mount efron road right near the marc station entrance. so be aware of that. our anchors will have more on that situation just coming up in a couple minutes. stay tuned for that information. in the meantime we're looking okay on the north side of town on the beltway. no problems between college park and silver spring. 270 looking good out of clarksburg and 95 coming in from baltimore. let's take a live look outside. here's what it looks like if you're planning to head in the college park area. no problems at route 1. both loops of the beltway, i think that construction from overnight near kenilworth avenue should be cleared up. this time to southern maryland and all the major thoroughfares look great. route 5, route 4, 301, 210 to accokeek. let's go live on the the beltway south of town. here's what it looks like at route 210.

i think you're good to go early this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look at virginia roads at 5:10. the child sex abuse trial against penn state's former assistant football coach begins later this morning. >> jerry sandusky is accused of abusing boys for more than a decade in what proctors -- prosecutors describe as a massive quarterback within the football program. delia goncalves is live with a preview. >> reporter: good morning. despite attempts by the defense to delay the start of the trial, jury selection indeed begins later this morning in a case that the defense attorneys say has already been tried in the court of public opinion. eight of the accusers are scheduled to testify in the trial and must all use their real names. the men claim the former assistant football coach sexually assaulted them as children, many of them came from sandusky's charity second mile designed to help troubled boys. jerry sandusky now faces 52

counts for allegedly sodomizing and assaulting ten boys for nearly 15 years. defense attorneys are expected to attack the credibility of the alleged victims and former grad student mike mcqueary who claims he saw sandusky assaulting a boy in a locker room shower back in march 2002. prosecutors now say that occurred in february 2001. >> the jury is going to be asking itself if mike mcqueary who has no dog in this hunt is making up a story, could these other witnesses be making up a story as well. >> we've been trying to overinto this tidal wave of presumption of guilt since november 5. >> reporter: remember this scene. students at penn state rioted after legendary coach joe paterno was fired for not reporting the allegations when he first learned of them years ago. paterno has since died of lung cancer. coming up at 5:0, we'll hear from jerry sandusky in his own

words. back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves with that live update from our satellite center. 5:04 now. doctors are treating the survive of a fiery overnight crash in dickerson, maryland. you heard monika talk about it a few minutes ago. montgomery county police say one person died at the scene and the car was burned so badly that investigators couldn't determine the gender or estimate the age of the victim. we're waiting on the condition of the survivor at this point. the crash shut down the scene while police investigate the cause. it took a prince george's county jury less than three hours monday to convict john haston on murder charges. investigators say they found this case especially disturbing because it involved one defendant posing as a pepco employee. greg brooks pretending to work for the utility so he came case david williams' home in bowie last july. the next day brooks returned with haston. they killed williams and stole

items from his home. brooks also has pleaded guilty in the case. haston faces a maximum sentence of life plus 60 years. a virginia tech waiting to happen. that's how a new report describe as morgan state university student who is suspected of killing and eating his roommate. a senior military instructor at morgan state university made those comment abouts 21-year- old alexander kinyu. he's accused of killing his roommate, dismembering the man and eating parts of his brain and heart. he had been banned from campus following an outburst last december. the d.c. council is expected today to approve a $9.4 billion budget for fiscal year 2013. the council unanimously gave preliminary approval to the plan last month. some revenue raising plans in the budget include doubling the number of traffic cameras and changing parking meter fees. bars would also be allowed to stay open till 4:00 a.m. on certain days. 5:05. we're talking money.

>> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines as we say we saw a little bit of that color green yesterday. >> fingers crossed. the markets found a little bit of stability yesterday and we're hoping to see more of the same today. overnight we've actually seen asian and european stocks heading higher. doesn't even feel like that's possible. checking the numbers from here at home the dow standing at 12, 101 finishing the today i down 17 points. nasdaq actually headed higher. it gained about 12.5 pointses and the s&p 500 finished the day flat, a little bit up. today a bill aimed at getting women the same pay as their male colleagues faces a key procedural vote on capitol hill. between events yesterday, president obama jumped on a conference call with reporters to urge passage of the measure. he says right now women earn an average of 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man, but republicans say the bill which is co-sponsored by maryland's

barbra mikulski would place an undue burden on businesses. washington's gallery of art is looking to move. suburban maryland and virginia are on the table's possible site. it would cost an estimated $130 million to bring the current home up to modern standards and it needs a lot more space. the museum can display only less than 3% of its collection. the museum's board of trustees voted yesterday afternoon to authorize putting the building on the market. >> it's a beautiful building. it should be a shame to lose it in the nation's capital. >> i would be surprised if we didn't see a hotel making a bid for that location because that's prime and we've been seeing the development around the white house picking up which i find interesting from a security standpoint. but we have seen that trend. >> what's up in the next half- hour? >> saving 40% on your grocery bill. i'm going to show you how.

maryland down toward fredricksburg right now but overrual not a bad day headed our way. a little bit on the cool side for june as we're looking at temperatures this morning, many of them in the 50s. we'll have partly sunny conditions with mid- to upper 60s by lunch time and only topping out in the low 7s on and a spot -- 70s and a spotty shower or two before the day is over, mainly west of d.c. i'll have the full seven-day forecast in the next five. right now monika is in with a look at your time saver traffic. we're telling but a deadly accident in dickerson, maryland. here is a live view of the accident. this tow truck just arrived on the scene moments ago to take away the charred remains of the single vehicle that was involved in the accident. in the meantime route 28 is closed between martinsburg road and efron road. i'll have more on this and other area roadways at 5:17. making news now at 5:10, high winds are hampering firefighters' efforts to gain control of a blaze in southwest utah. today investigators with the

national transportation safety board are expected to arrive. they're looking into what caused sunday's air tanker crash which killed the to pilots on board. the suspect some the natalie holloway dns appearance could be ex-- disappearance could be extradited to the united states to face extortion charges. he solicited $25,000 from natalie holloway's parents to tell them where they could find her body in aruba. she vanished during a school vacation in 2005. he's now serving a sentence in peru for killing a woman there. he could be sent to the u.s. after he finishes his sentence in that country. in the first britain's queen elizabeth is attending the final diamond jubilee event to celebrate her 60 years on the thrown but her husband will not be at her side. prince philip has been hospitalled with a bladder infection. he'll be under observation for the next few days. the prince turns 91 this saturday. it happened back in 2004 and it's happening once again tonight.

5:43. this didn't set till about 8:30 or so. we are looking pretty good for the day. as we look at our day planner, 61 degrees at 9:00. by noon we'll be in the upper 60s. northeast winds at 8. partly sunny conditions. as we head into the afternoon 70 degrees at 5:00. the high in the low 70s. spotty showers. best chance of that will be west of town out toward the blue ridge, higher elevations out west. this morning you can see the showers that have been coming through, especially the coastal areas here in calvert, anne arundel county, down across parts of the northern neck even a few showers. north beach right down route 4 here toward st. leonard and solomons into eastern areas of st. yary's county and coming down 95, a couple of sprinkles toward fauquier county to prince william, out of woodbridge. this will all be pulling away from us in the next hour or two. we're not bad. 55 now in gaithersburg and

leesburg. 58 for haymarket. also in college park and fort belvoir. 57 in baden and crofton. outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility. you see some of the clouds now about a half-hour before the sunrise. 59 and cloudy at national with a northeast wind at 8. that is going to keep us on the cool side today. big storms still spinning out across areas of southeastern canada, northeastern u.s. bringing down a little piece of energy toward us this morning. for the afternoon, it looks like we're going to clear out a little bit and fire any showers mainly in the higher elevations to the west and up in pennsylvania. so as we look at the three-day forecast, we've got a green today, 71, spotty shower. no real problem. tomorrow some afternoon showers yellow but if it looks better than that, we might go to green and thursday afternoon showers and storms, 77. another yellow alert today. friday 80 looks good. so does the weekend turning hot by sunday and storms again with the heat on monday.

5:17. here comes monika santami. not so good right now. we've got problems up in dickerson and elsewhere. >> dickerson is our big story this morning. it was a fatal accident from overnight. it happened at 1:00 in the morning, single vehicle accident just west of 270 here in dickerson. in fact, i'm going to step out and show you a live picture. this was the only vehicle involved in the accident barely even looks like a car anymore. one person dead at the scene and the second one flown to baltimore shock trauma. if you are planning to head through this area, you'll want to know route 28 is closed between mount efron road. eastbound you'll be diverted at the mouth of monocassy road. a tow truck has arrived on the scene. they're just trying to pull it on to the tow truck. in the meantime police will remain there to investigate and clean up. i expect this will still remain closed for some time. if you are planning to head

good morning, everybody. the nationals making a splash last night in the draft. they didn't have the number one pick but they got a player that many thought would have been there if not for some injury issues. with the 16th joaferrual pick the nationals selected a 17- year-old right-handed pitcher from california. earlier this season he was considered to be the top pick until a strain ligament in his elbow scared some teams away but his 100 mile an hour football made him worth the risk. >> 220-pound right-handed pitcher with a great body and velocity and good stuff, great character and great makeup. we've been on this guy from day one. we just felt that the risk outweighed the -- the reward outweighed the risk. >> for the wizards randy whitman will be the head coach at least for the next two seasons. he went 18-31 after taking over for flip saunders midway through the lockout season.

mount ephraim. police have not been able to determine the dead person's gender or even the approximate age. there are reports the accused east coast rapist plans to use an insanity defense when he goes on trial in prince william county. aaron thomas has a competency hearing this friday. thomas' lawyers plan to question their client's sanity at the time of his alleged crimes. thomas is accused of raping two teenage girls on halloween night 2009 in woodbridge, virginia. d.n.a. has also linked him to 14 other attacks in virginia, maryland, and other states. for years he was one of the revered coaches at penn state football program. now he's going on trial as an accused pedophile. former defensive coordinator

jerry sandusky is accused of sexually abusing young boys over a long period of time. delia goncalves is live in the satellite center tracking today's developments. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. get this. after a mom complained to campus police that sandusky was showering with her young son back in 1998, a psychologist analyzed sandusky at the time saying he had the characteristics of a pedophile, someone who gains the trust of their victims and then attacks. that's exactly what eight men will say sandusky did to them when they are children. they are set to testify in a trial that begins later this morning. sandusky is accused of molesting and sodomizing ten boys during 15 years, many of them coming from his charity for troubled boys. sandusky has been on house arrest since december and has denied the charges. in fact, you may remember the shocking interview sandusky did just ten days after his

by the 7th inning. the showers overnight came from d.c. but more south and east across areas in calvert, st. mary's county, anne arundel county. had some reports of half an inch of rain from that. a lone sprinkle here in fauquier county along route 5 here. this is coming east of waldorf now. seeing these showers really diminish and the other ones calvert, st. mary's. some stuff is falling apart. temperatures are in the 50s now although it is 60 in fredricksburg. it's 45 in garrett county. jacket weather for sure out west with 55 gaithersburg and winchester and easton right now at 54. kind of a cool sky this morning. some of those low puffy clouds, cumulous clouds which gave us a few sprinkles overnight behind the capital. 59 degrees as we look at our michael & son weather camera. humidity at 82%. here's a look at our future cast, the showers are pulling away although west of town when you get to the blue ridge, the northeast winds just a little

bit of lift that could produce spotty showers here, especially as we go through the afternoon and evening with a better chance of showers in the mountains. think we'll have a pretty decent day albeit cooler than afternoon. tonight partly cloudy. tomorrow looking at some showers, maybe thunder developing but a better chance again will be north and west of d.c. looks like by thursday we have a better chance of showers and storms here and then the heat builds. so as we look at the three-day, today green, no problems, spotty shower west, 71. back in the 50s tonight. yellow tomorrow for afternoon showers, some thunder but that may be mainly west. that may be changing to green by noon. thursday looks like a better chance we'll have a yellow day with scattered afternoon showers and storms, 77. again yellow being the type of day that could just impact your plans but not be really, really bad. friday 80 degrees as we dry out. saturday 84. then here comes the heat by sunday, monday with a chance of storms. happy tuesday. happy tuesday.

i'm happy to say that this accident we've been telling but since early this morning in dickerson, maryland on route 28 at mount ephraim road has been cleared up. you're going to go through that area in case you heard about it earlier this morning. now a look at 270. looking great out of damascus into clarksburg. no problems and in dickerson that accident has been cleared. you should be good to go through that area. a live look outside right now and here's what it looks like on the american legion bridge on the west side of town. no delays right now between 270, tysons corner, 66 and all the way down to i-95. the entire western stretch looks great. let's go back over to the maps this time route 50 coming in from annapolis. you should be okay all the way into cheverly. in new carrollton as route a and again volumes are light. in my next report, we'll go to virginia at 6:00. here is what's making news at 5:51. campaign 23012 news -- 2012 news, five states holding

hayward salutes the women center in fairfax. >> i was having a couple of difficulties, one at a previous job, just wasn't -- it just didn't seem like the right fit. >> reporter: 15 years ago lori schuster visited the women's center because she needed career counseling. >> i needed to talk to somebody about some strategies that i could use that were maybe different than ones i had already tried. >> reporter: she says he also needed advice about a friendship. and the therapy helped her realize that the relationship had run its course. >> i really had a good counselor. she was very warm and friendly and very helpful. she had really good direct strategies that i could put into place immediately that helped a great deal. >> reporter: she went to the women's center for about six months and worked on one on one with a licensed therapist. these services were offered to her regardless of her ability to pay the full fee.

northeast wind, you hit the higher elevations, that gives a little lift. we'll see a few showers possible there as we get toward the middle of the day and the afternoon. east of town more sunshine but unseasonably cool. average highs 81. look at the midday temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s. as we get into the afternoon, the spotty showers out west. 70 at 3:00 with highs only about 71. the showers even by 6:00 should be mainly well west of town with 69 in easton and 70 here in d.c. >> today is the final day of events celebrating queen elizabeth ii's diamond jubilee. the royal family will attend a service at st. paul's cathedral. then take a trip through london in three horse-drawn carriages. queen elizabeth's husband prince philip will not be there. the 90-year-old prince has been hospitalled with a bladder infection and he'll remain under observation in the hospital for a few days. meanwhile after 60 years on the thrown, the queen's approval rating is over 80%.
