brown, denied reports that federal prosecutors are closing in on him in a late afternoon news conference. but his denial came after he canceled an earlier appearance, shoved a reporter, and declined to answer questions. bruce leshan is live at the wilson building. what a day, bruce. >> what a day, there's discussions going on now among council members about what might succeed kwame brown should he be forced to resign. we may now be hours or days away from the climax of a federal investigation that started soon after kwame brown took office and demanded that the city lease him a fully loaded lincoln suv. d.c.'s second highest ranking elected official ignored questions about whether he would resign, ignored questions about whether he has met with federal prosecutors. and said he knew nothing about any possible fraud charges that might be filed against him.

ask them to remove me from the room. >> the attorney's office had no official response today to questions about the status of its investigation of brown. that may change before the end of the week. derek. >> all right, thank you, bruce. a teenager convicted of killing her own mom is headed off to jail for the next 48 years. ashley nicole pled guilty back in january. she was just months short of her 18th birthday when she shot her 62-year-old mother, brenda, last summer. ashley's boyfriend, eddie, was also convicted for being an accessory in the case. he's due to be sentenced next month. and jury selection began today. the former penn state assistant coach facing 52 counts of abuse of ten boys over a 15 year span. about 220 potential jurors are in the pool. the judge says he is hoping to start the trial on monday. right now, nine jurors have been seated. and there is new

information tonight about the driver of that car that crashed into a riverdale apartment building over the weekend. tonight, police say 36 was not behind the wheel as she claimed, instead, she was covering for her husband. 39-year-old david smith. tonight, smith has been charged with driving without a license. his wife is charged with giving a false report to the police. a dramatic faceoff today between occupy d.c. protesters and u.s. marshals. the occupiers were protesting the eviction of a family. kristin fisher is here with more. people at the hospital? >> that's right. one protester and one u.s. marshal. they were simply doing their job. executing a court ordered eviction. but when they got there, they were confronted by 50 protesters with the group, occupy our home's d.c. as you are about to see, it got ugly. >> it's grand larceny.

>> protesters pulled apart, dragged away by u.s. marshals. marshals breakthrough the first barrier, then hit another blockade at front door. protesters tied the pipes and a wall of milk crates. the marshals ripped down the crates, bust down the door, and pull a dozen protesters out from underneath. at one point, part of the door struck one marshal in the head. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. as was this protester. he was unconscious for about ten minutes. >> i know they should not have been so aggressive and abusive towards the occupiers. >> dawn butler is the woman these protesters are fighting for. she rented out this capital hill home for the past six years, but it was foreclosed on three years ago. dawn tried to buy the property, instead it was sold to a bank. >> i'm the 99% up against this 1%. and i'm losing. >> but despite the protests, the marshals prevailed.

by the end of the day, the locks were changed and dawn's belongings were scattered across the sidewalk. >> this is the third attempt, they happen to prevail. dawn says for now, her stuff is going into storage. she is planning on staying with family, but anita, she plans on continuing this fight in court. >> you can understand the frustration on both sides. >> oh yeah, absolutely. one wants to save their house, the other, doing their job. back to you guys. >> tough situation all the way around. the polls are going to be open for about oughted three hours in wisconsin. that is where governor scott walker is facing off against milwaukee mayor, tom barrett in a recall election. it's a replay of the 2010 election that put walker into office. voters started lining up early this morning to cast their ballots. it all started when governor walker pushed through a bill that stripped union workers of their collective bargaining rights. a lead of up to 7 points.

an abandoned barge started sinking at the southwest waterfront today. a salvage company was working on the boat and the crew didn't realize there were still fuel tanks on board. about 30-gallons of fuel did spill into the channel, but it was quickly contained. no plans to raise the barge. on capitol hill, the senate failed to advance a bill that supporters would help close the wage gap between men and women. democrats support the bill, republicans oppose it. the bill would make it easier for employees to sue over differences in pay and it would block companies from retaliating against workers who look into pay differences at the workplace. the white house has a new program aimed at making college costs and financial aid easier to figure out. it's a partnership that only involves a few dozen colleges.

sun. kind of like a beauty mark. now this venus transit started just around 6:04 this evening. this is a six hour, 40 minute trek and a lot of this is weather dependent. here's how an expert says a safe way to view venus in transit. >> the diameter of venus is 3% the diameter of the sun. that means it is small, but should be big enough that even with the naked eye and certainly if you projected it through binoculars again, not looking, but project k it, you will see this dot that will move. >> this is a rare event. venus moving across the sun. the next time this will happen will be in 105 years. in 2117. back out here live, we are at the air and space museum where there's a viewing party. one of several viewing parties around the d.c. metro area. they have telescopes set up and

signing a two-year deal to remain in the khl, stating he's not ready to go to the nhl just yet. finally tonight, an inspiring act of sportsmanship. during the 3200 meter race at the ohio state track meet. arden collapsed on the track. melanie, you see her. she stops, picks her up and carried her across the finish line. letting her go first. letting her cross the finish line first. it was 3200 meters. two mile run. just everybody, as you can tell, cheering. but melanie had won a state championship earlier in the day for the 1600 meters. this was her last race. >> that's a true champion. >> i think you'll right. thank you. a great way to close out the show. the cbs evening news is next. >> and derek is back at 7:00 with your area's only local newscast. have a great night.
