stop. it happened at the southern avenue metro in temple hills, maryland. >> and that is why we find ken molestina -- where we find ken molestina tonight. the gunman still on the loose. >> reporter: still on the loose. we just got the information for the suspect. it's still a very active scene out here. 9:30 tonight the calls went out for shots fired here at the southern avenue metro station. when police got here, they found a man shot in the face lying dead on the sidewalk. you can see this is the scene that remains right now. we're being told that was a black man about 40 years old. the suspect then took off running through the metro station. right now we do not understand -- we do not know where he may have gone. police right now we understand are looking for him using canines, using a helicopter and police on the ground. let's go ahead and get the suspect information out there for you. we're being told the suspect is a black male in his 20s. he's about 5 feet, 8 inches

tall, 220 pounds. he has a full beard. they're saying he has a full beard. he was wearing a black hoodie. the hunt is on. they're looking for him right now. and as you can see, still a very active scene out here. guys, back to you. >> all right. ken. thank you. well, all of the votes have yet to be counted, but it appears republican governor scott walker has survived the recall election and will remain in office. the fight over republican employee union rights dominated the costly campaign, which is being seen by some as a test of republican and democratic ideals just months before the presidential campaign begins. gary nurenberg is here with more. gary. >> reporter: a little piece of triv yeah, did you know -- trivia, did you know the first governor to survive a recall event, take your dramamine, both will be spinning like crazy. scott walker made headlines with

his legislation that stripped public employee unions of most of their collective bargaining rights. the recall is seen by some as a test of the walker approach many republicans hope to emulate nationwide. and as a pulse taking of the electric, months before the vote. >> it does indicate the passion of the voters, the interest in the issues and the polarization of the electorate and how the economy is going to dominate. so i think reading the results of wisconsin not so much for a republican win or a democratic win, but how these issues are going to play out and who has the stronger, more coherent message. >> reporter: republican heavy weight campaign for walker. bill clinton there for merit. estimates of out of state money in the campaign approach $100 million. looking live now at the walker party, and it is a party in wisconsin where they're waiting for him to come out and speak,

mitt romney has already weighed in saying this shows voters want to cut spending. the sentiment goes beyond wisconsin. he also talked about run away cost imposed by bosses and how to deal with that. interesting piece of information from the polls. apparently a relatively large number of folks who voted to keep walker in office said they prefer barack obama for the presidency in november. as we said, both sides will be spinning like crazy. back to you. >> interesting poll numbers. thank you, gary. the white house is now confirming the death of al qaeda's second in command. he is al-libi and there are reports that he died on a missile flying into northern pakistan. the obama administration will not go that far. at least not yet. >> the death is a major thing for the core of al qaeda. further damaging the group's morale and confusion and bringing it closer to its

ultimate demise. >> now, the white house says he had become the public face of al qaeda, appearing in propaganda videos, appearing in attacks he helped to plan. now, maryland will decide whether the speed cameras operating in jurisdictions are legal. the company that installed the camera received $16.25 for every $40 ticket issue. but according to state law, the contractor operating the cameras cannot be compensated based on the number of tickets issued. the county argues it is still legal because the company doesn't actually run those cameras. and tomorrow night is the grand opening of what will be maryland's largest casino. maryland live anne arundel mills, and it is set to open the doors tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. it will feature 3200 slots, and there are five restaurants slated to open june 20th.

phase two will have a live music venue. that's all expected to happen sometime between july and october. kwame brown, chairman to the dc council second to the mayor. we've learned fellow council members are discussing who would succeed brown. he has been under federal investigation, and sources are saying they met with brown and out lying their case against him. something brown disputed today. >> i don't know -- you are telling me things i don't know. >> you don't know anything about the bank fraud charge. >> the federal investigation started with charges about whether brown compensated from campaign funds during his run for council chair in 2008. today brown said he does not think he broke any laws during that campaign. george zimmerman remains behind bars tonight and he will wait to file a motion asking for

a second bond hearing for his client. no reason was given. zimmerman is the neighborhood watch leader who shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin back in february. zimmerman was originally free on $150,000 bond, but he was forced to turn himself back in when it turned out he didn't fully disclose his finances to the judge during the first hearing. the court could finish seating a jury tomorrow at the trial of jerry sandusky. he is the former coach accused of abusing several young boys. they chose nine people to sit on the jury. tomorrow they could seat the remaining three plus four alter nits. if you have ever filled out a college aid form, it can be very confusing. so today the white house sent representatives from several schools and announced a plan to simplify the process. the idea is to let new students know in advance the financial aid options and their estimated monthly payments after they

graduate. area democratic leaders furious tonight at senate republicans who voted down a bill that called for equal pay for women in the work force. if it had pass, it would have -- passed, it would have required employers to do pay differences based on qualifications and not related to gender. in a statement the governor says it is unfortunate that some have chosen politics over our people preventing america from moving forward, growing jobs, opportunity and hope for a prosperous future. virginia congressman gerry connolly says in today's world, how can anyone vote against providing women with equal pay. the new bill would have meant more government. if you have never been to the historic downtown, you might want to get there too. after more than 100 years at the current spot and apparently facing sizeable financial problems, the corcorans may be moving. >> reporter: for the past

115 years, the corcoran gallery of art has been located at 17th street and new york avenue where it houses one of the country's most impressive collection of american art. >> there are a lot of legitimate reasons for it to move. >> reporter: there are strong signs tonight that the corcoran's days and the home could very well be numbered. >> it's maybe time for the institution to look for different space. >> reporter: in a statement the corcoran's director says "our needs are made especially challenging by a high operating cost. one of the options now is to consider relocating to a purpose built technologically advanced facility that is cost effective to maintain. . in tonight's health alert, frightening cases of flesh eating bacteria getting a lot of attention. there is a mother in north carolina and a georgia student that got it from a bug. in fact, a local scientist tells me it's also in the chesapeake bay. a warning. tonight's report contains some graphic images. >> reporter: amy copeland is beginning to speak again and has been taken off a respirator. all good signs for her recovery but the damage caused by flesh eating disease has been done.

doctors have had to amputate both of her hands, part of her abdomen, one of her legs and her remaining foot. >> the prayers we've got i believe are the only reasons amy is alive today. >> reporter: in most cases, flesh eating disease is triggered by group a strep bacteria. it's what caused her infection starting with a painful spot on her leg that rapidly spread. doctors performed seven surgeries to stop the infection in advance but fortunately have not needed to amputate. cope land's case is different. the bug got into her body through a gash suffered in a zip lining accident on a georgia river. it lived in fresh water lakes, river and dreams or brackish environments, meaning salt water and fresh. >> they're a natural habitat. they're a big part of the

ecosystem. and their numbers increase in the warmer months. >> reporter: she has studied them for almost 30 years and has a freezer full of samples of this microorganism taken from infections from around the world. she says of the 29 species, eight are known to cause illness in people. in most cases it's a mild diarrhea if a swimmer smiles water. but if one gets in a cut, it can cause horrific damage. people who work and relax on the chesapeake bay need to know about it because it thrives there. >> boating, swimming, if we ingest water or get a cut or wound while we're in this environment, there's the potential for certain strains of it to cause disease. >> reporter: the doctor is chief of infectios disease at george washington university hospital. he says infections through cuts are pretty unusual but they do happen. he says any wound should be

washed out immediately and watched carefully. >> most people see a little readiness and go to the doctor. if -- redness and go to the doctor. if you get fever and chills, you better come soon. >> in a matter of hours, it become life-threatening. >> reporter: some don't take chances. wash out the wound and cover it up. doctors need to use antibiotics to fight the infection so they need to know if you got hurt in the water. >> oh, okay. well, when she forgot the hericks to one of her -- lyrics to one of her songs, sherrill crow knew something might be wrong with her brain. after getting an mri, it turns out she has a tumor. a benign brain tumor. her agent says she's doing great and healthy and happy. amazing video tonight from

michael and son. temperature 64 downtown. dew point 49. winds out of the east at 3. we've had an easterly component to the wind for the last several days. pressure still rising at 2.96 inches of mercury. there is still a few clouds and showers to the north of us. most of the showers tonight have been west of town, in the mountains and cumberland and winchester. that's where they're going to stay. we'll keep a chance of an isolated shower but by and large most of them will be west and town. a cool start again tomorrow morning. i think most of the commutes will be mainly drive. the only exception would be west of i81 tomorrow, especially in the morning. warmer on thursday. that will give us a chance for thunderstorms and then we finish the week strong heating up over the weekend. but a gorgeous friday. by the time we get out of the weekend, it's going to feel like mid july. overnight tonight, we're going to keep the clouds in. mostly cloudy and cool. a few showers possible.
