right now you're beginning to see a lot of volume on your major thoroughfares but luckily no big incidents to report in your way. good morning, everybody. on the southbound side of i-270 you see all this red forming in orange out of frederick. that's normal for 6:00 in the morning trying to get down toward urbana. we'll go live to 270 southbound and show you what it looks like here at father hurley boulevard. this is the southbound side. you'll be just fine through germantown into rockville and the point where the lanes divide. back over to the maps and this time to the beltway. on the outer loop you'll find the brake lights on the southbound side of route 29 trying to exit at the beltway. a live look on the southern side of town. here's what it looks like coming out of brandywine. no delays to speak of yet. coming up in my next report, we'll go to virginia at 6:15. >> thank you. you commit the crime. you do the time. kwame brown will go before a judge tomorrow to enter a guilty plea on bank fraud

charges. less than 12 hours ago he resigned as chairman of the d.c. council. in his resignation letter he wrote, quote, i have behaved in ways that i should not have. i was wrong and i will face the consequences of that conduct. i have apologized to the residents of our great city and i also offer my unconditional apology to members of the council for awfully the negative teax r attention that -- negative attention that my conduct has brought about. delia goncalves is live outside the wilson building getting more reaction to what we can only call a bombshell. delia? >> reporter: absolutely. it's been pretty amazing couple of days. just two days ago kwame brown was here at the wilson building telling reporters he absolutely did nothing wrong. 24 hours later he submipted his respect -- submitted his resignation and apologized for his, quote, poor judgment. 41-year-old brown will likely serve some time in federal prison for his guilty plea, though he's been under investigation for alleged

campaign finance violations from 2008. it is his personal indiscretion that has ended his political career, at least for announcement you see his resignation before his guilty plea in court means he will be able to run for office in the future. our gary nurenberg asked marion barry with harry thomas, jr., the mayor's investigation and now kwame brown, is there a corruption problem in d.c.? >> 99.9% of us who serve in public office do it honorably. we're -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: the council members say they need to move forward so how are they going to do that with all of this happening over them like a wet blanket, a dark cloud over the city. i'll let you know coming up at 6:30. back to you. >> we'll be looking forward to that report. she's live outside the wilson building this morning in downtown d.c. the story has a lot of people talking as you can

imagine. you can also join the conversation by going to our facebook timeline. it's facebook.com/wusa9. metro has come up with a new way to track safety issues when it comes to its emergency exits. the washington examiner uncovered many of the problems with those exits. in fact, many of them were impassable. the paper also reports that metro's congress heights station, the emergency exit was locked for at least 15 months. the fran sit authority says it was locked because of security concerns. a panic bar has been installed to allow people to escape in case of an emergency. metro says it will begin its new tracking system june 23. fairfax city police say a mother who died in a car crash on lee highway was speeding at the time. dejon williams sideswiped a car, then careened into a minivan tuesday night. her 5-year-old daughter was also killed. her 7-year-old daughter is hospitalized along with the driver of the minivan.

a quick arrest by prince george's county police in a deadly shooting. 43-year-old harold deeter was killed tuesday night at the metro station. hours later nor man bond was investigated. investigators are still trying to determine a motive. should parents be held legally responsible if their kids are tardy to school? a judge in virginia could be deciding that today. we first told you about mark and amy daniquor last winter. they're facing finals for excessive tardiness by their young children. the county says it's distracting to other students. the parents say this is no crime. 6:05. jessica doyle is here with a special your money report. >> getting in on the ground floor of a hot start-up business and you don't have to be rich to do it. >> who doesn't want to make a fortune by getting in early on the next big thing? it's about to get a lot easier for small investors to bankroll a start-up.

but should you? >> reporter: with great risks come great rewards. the flip side of that coin, you can also suffer great losses. a lesson important to keep in mind as a new type of investing comes online in the next year or two. >> lose everything. that's the biggest downside. >> reporter: john reports for kiplinger's personal finance magazine. he's been following the jobs act the president signed into law in april. one part of that law would allow small investors to act like venture capitalists on a small scale. >> they might see this and think this will be a chance to get in really early on a company. >> reporter: the act lets investors buy stakes in start- up companies, a way for the companies to get the critical cash flow they need to make t. investors get a chance to get in on the ground floor on what could become the next nation book or they could lose -- the next facebook or they could lose everything. >> half of start-up companies fail within five years so the prospects don't look great. >> investors will buy their

stakes in start-ups through brokers and online funding portals that don't even exist yet. the rules of the game won't be worked out till next year. >> you'll have some financial information but it definitely shoot be part of someone's portfolio. it's money you can afford to lose. >> the great social media start- up facebook also a great disappointment for many investors. >> consumer advocates worry that this new avenue of investment could lead to a new round of get rich quick schemes. don't believe any marketing pitch saying you can invest now since the rules for this new market won't even be finalized until next year at the earliest. i wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing things in our in box saying you can get in now on the next big thing and those aren't true. >> absolutely. >> they may not be so big. >> big loss now. thank you. our time right now 7 after the hour. cool schools is next and he's

coming up on 6:11 this thursday morning. here's a check on the stories making news. people in syria are taking to the streets to protest the latest violence there. activists say pro government forces killed at least 78 people wednesday, including children. secretary of state hillary clinton is in turkey taking part in talks aimed at ending the violence. this morning transportation secretary ray lahood will make a major announcement on distracted driving. he'll unveil a national strategy initiative to end what he calls a national especial dependic. the propoe type space shuttle -- prototype space shuttle enterprise has arrived at its new home in new york city. it will go on display next month. enterprise had been on display for nearly ten years at the smithsonian's center.

temperatures upper 70s to around 8 on and a slight chance after shower. coastal flood advisories along the tidal potomac and the bay. tieds running one, one and a half feet above normal. there may be a little bit of minor flooding. we have agent bit of fog toward manassas and culpeper. satellite and radar, i went through that too fast. everything is moving north to south. all quiet this morning but anything that does pop this afternoon will be drifting southward. manassas, your visibility is down to three-quarters with half mile in warrenton. so a little bit of fog here. worst in petersburg and harrisonburg. we've got visibilities around zero right now. the rest of us are doing all right with temps in the 50s to about 60 on the bay. easton is 59. 58 at the pax river naval air station. 59 reedville. 57 in cross junction and catlett about 53 degrees. we look outside on our michael & son weather camera in tysons corner this morning. just a few clouds as we look toward the northwest. a pretty morning out there with 58 degrees. humidity at 87% and a wind out

of the south, southwest at 5 miles an hour. so through midday, we're all right. just some patchy clouds but partly to mostly sunny. the afternoon watch how the showers and storms form and start to drift off to the south and southeast. they'll be with us for the late afternoon but overnight things quiet down and looks like we're going to be in pretty good shape but a slight chance for an afternoon storm here over the next few days but it's going to be pretty isolated the way it looks now. so today look at the forecast. the yellow alert sort of weather. we could get these thunderstorms or showers in the afternoon. they may slow down the evening commute. may slow down or interfere with some of your outdoor plans after school or after work. highs around 80. tonight 60s. tomorrow warmer, 84. a good day. saturday 88. you know, if we had a 20% chance of a storm each afternoon, not enough to put on the map but i'll just tell you about t. sunday we're 90. slight chance of an afternoon storm. same with monday. then tuesday into wednesday looks like storm chances increase, temps in the mid-80s.

6:14. here's monika. got some bright sunshine in our eyes this morning for our morning commute. here's 66 from sky 9 live leaving route 50. eight going to be one long slow ride as you head through fairfax this morning. but the good news is it's just the sunshine. no big accidents to deal w. let's go over to our map. the beltway is pretty much the same. you have a couple of slow spots. if you're planning to head over on the south side of town heading north out of dale city, you're going to find that slow traffic heading into woodbridge and then again into springfield. we'll take a live look outside. you'll see it's just the brake lights forming leaving route 644 here heading for 395 which is also slow right through landmark to seminary road so it's par for the course this morning. let's go back over to our maps. no problems to report if you're heading on the other side of town. on the outer loop of the beltway it's slowing down out of college park. you may hit the brakes a time or two on the inner loop. we'll take a live look at father hurley boulevard southbound side of father hourly things are looking good. nice and light as you head down to the point where the lanes divide.

in my next report, another look at the big picture at 6:25 but first, mike, your cool school is right outside our front door today. >> reporter: indeed. we are live right out in front of the school -- in front of the tv station on something that sort of has been dubbed the magic bus so to speak. this is really neat. it's a live mobile learning lab. it's brought to students by verizon. they get a chance to prepare for college because college students come to them at their school. here's one of the teachers, melanie agnew. one of the cool things that this bus provides and the students who are tutors on it that come to the school is getting them ready really for college quickly. >> the howard tutors come on the verizon wireless mobile learning lab to help students with writing, scholarship essays, applications. most of the students who have used the labs have used the

essays to apply and be accepted to the college or university of their choice. >> reporter: those can be tough. you're writing about yourself. it may be difficult to extract the life experiences you think would be positive for college. >> the great thing about the lab is students can start their essays with teachers at coolidge and they get one on one attention. >> reporter: this is charles. he is not only one of the guys that took advantage of the bus, but he's also going to be one of the commencement speakers at coolidge. he will read a little bit of his statement. he said a lot of the things he's gone through in his life no excuse. you are going to succeed no matter. what let's hear part of your statement. >> never allow my background to become an excuse for not succeeding in life. >> reporter: you moved around a lot as a child and ended up skipping a grade. how did you find it deep within yourself to succeed no matter

d.c. now has a two-game lead over miami and atlanta in the ll east. -- nl east. redskins training camp is heading south in 2013. next summer the team will take their month long training to richmond, virginia. governor bob mcdonnell says the commonwealth and the team had been working on this for a year. coach shanahan said he wanted to go away for spring training. the training facility in ashburn will remain for at least eight more years. so many people said the boston celtics were too old to win the nba eastern conference title. tonight they get a chance to prove them wrong. game six against the miami heat in boston. the winner is going to face oklahoma city. montrose kevin durant sensational again. thunder kicked the spurs to the curve. okc wirns the series 4-2.

personal charge of bank fraud. >> brown is due in court tomorrow for plead guilty. mayor vincent gray says he's shocked. in a statement the mayor said, quote, never would i imagine something like this would occur. mary cheh will take over temporarily as council chair. she wants a meeting wednesday to pick an interim chair. >> delia goncalves is live outside the wilson building getting reaction from city leaders this morning. >> reporter: well, you read some of it. many of city leaders have expressed their deep disappoint and betrayal by kwame brown's actions. and city leaders are now struggling to conduct city business under this enormous cloud of doubt. 41-year-old brown will likely serve some jail time for his guilty plea on friday. he's accused of falsifying bank documents in order to secure a loan so he can buy a boat. analysts say his quick plea deal and resignation indicates prosecutors may have far more damaging evidence against him. he was as you may remember

under investigation for alleged campaign violations from 2008. temporary council chair mary cheh visited our studios last night and she talked about the future of the city council. >> i do ask, though, that whoever is out there has something that they need to come forward on, come forward on it, take your punishment, and go away. i expect the u.s. attorney once the investigation is depleted, usually -- completed, usually they don't do this but under these circumstances we would need a statement our investigation is completed. we have to be able to move on. >> reporter: moving on they will certainly try to do in the next few days after this guilty plea according to the city charter. one of the council members at large will likely take and be appointed the interim chair and then a special election will be held in november. kwame brown expected to plead guilty on friday will likely

of metro's silver line is back on track. the airports authorities voted to get rid of the controversial project labor agreement. that agreement included incentives for work performed by labor unions. virginia governor bob mcdonnell as well as leaders in loudoun county opposed such incentives. money for the governments is essential for the project which will extend from the new line from reston to dulles airport and ashburn. the f.b.i. had reportedly launched an investigation into government leaks. cnn is reporting the bureau wants to know who leaked information on the american cyberattacks against iran. google says your g mail account could be involved in cyberwarfare. the company is telling people to be on the lookout for malicious activity and to report it. google believes foreign governments may be behind these attacks. the best advice? create a strong password and keep your eye on that account. at 6:36, jessica doyle is

citizens to get out and do outdoor activities because we want them to reconnect with future, mostly with forests and enjoy the beautiful values they have. >> so basically get outdoors but not just take a walk around the block where it can be concrete city or something like that but really be a part of nature? >> that is correct. when we different r plant different specie -- when we plant different species, we can see how they convey different kinds of values. we can enjoy nature and we can see that they provide great benefits for us. >> stress release, too, when you talk about water and the nature and those peaceful sounds. but a campaign that you're mounting right now is focused primarily on hispanic youngsters. 50% of them have never experienced these kinds of

great outdoors is that correct? >> what we know about this is 50% of the hispanic population doesn't do any activities outside in comparison with 62% of other groups that they have activities outdoors. so what we want is to encourage hispanics to enjoy and make a commitment with natural resources. >> you have some tsas that are coming out to help get that message across in a language that can be understood by them. >> yes. the foshest service -- the forest is -- [indiscernible] to insurge them to go out and enjoy the forest. because in this country, 245 million people live very close or between the radius of 90 miles of national forests. >> we have in great areas.
