by 5:00 83 degrees. looks absolutely gorgeous with a high about 85 or so. your sunrise happening at 5:43. we had a few showers and storms yesterday. they're all gone. skies have cleared nicely except for an isolated patch of clouds. temperatures very comfortable. in fact chilly. 49 in martinsburg. winchester, laurie, fred -- luray, frederick at 50. we're in the low 60s headed right toward the low to mid-80s but not too humid. it is 6:01. let's go over to monika with the latest time saver traffic. if you're planning to head into the district, the one big story of the morning is an overturned vehicle on massachusetts avenue which is closed between nebraska and wisconsin. so you're going to have to from police direction to get around that one. i'll keep you posted as to that situation and when the roads reopen. in the meantime here's 270. really not too bad. friday morning light. it's keeping up with that. no problems out of frederick as you head down toward urbana and the point where the lanes

divide. we'll take you to a live picture outside. if you're planning to head across the american legion bridge leaving 270 at father hurley boulevard to the west side of town. i'm going to say traffic is very light. let's go back over to the maps and this time to the north side of town. no problems on the beltway through college park and silver spring. a quick look south of town on the beltway in oxon hill. you're fine. telegraph road closed south of franconia road with a water main break. coming up in my next report, we'll go to 66 out west at 6:12. former d.c. council chairman kwame brown will be in court today expected to plead guilty to a felony bank fraud charge which prosecutors hit him with on wednesday. >> that charge led to brown's resignation but now he's also facing a second charge involving how he spent funds during his 2008 campaign. delia goncalves joins us from u.s. district court with more. we keep having shoes drop in this case and another one dropped yesterday. >> reporter: absolutely.

it's ongoing. so we still have to hold on to our hats because much more is still to come potentially. this is pretty unique in terms of the fact that kwame brown will be in two different court rooms today answering to both of those charges that you alluded to. first up, though, he's going to answer to the bank fraud charges here in federal court. and that's happening a little later this morning. 41-year-old kwame brown is accused of lying on a bank loan application so he could just buy a boat. prosecutors are also charging brown with a campaign finance violation in connection with his 2008 reelection bid. you see the charge accuses brown of facilitating an illegal campaign expenditure greater than $50. allegedly brown funneled more than $230,000 from his campaign to his brother's now defunct consulting group. many business leaders and council members are hoping with

brown's plea deal today, they're hoping it will be an end to this controversy but many scandals remain, including an ongoing investigation into the mayor's bid for office. >> this is one more stain on the city. however, you know, we're a pretty resill yejts business community -- resilient business community and we're going to move on. there are so many good things going on in the city. this is not something we're going to let get us down. >> reporter: brown will likely avoid jail time because of his guilty plea and the resignation. i should also point out because he resigned before coming for court and needing guilty to these charges, he is not being convicted while in office so that means once he serves his time, whatever that may be, he can run for office here in the district of columbia once again. coming up at 6:30, we'll let you know what the council needs

in their next chairman. we'll have that in a half-hour. back to you, andrea, jessica. >> delia, thank you for the update. as you can imagine this story has a lot of people talking. you can join the conversation by going to our facebook timeline. it's facebook.com/wusa9. he's credited with launching many careers in the comedy world, but after going missing for weeks, the body of d.c. improv owner mark anderson was found inside a hotel room outside of phoenix. investigators say anderson was found alone dead as a result of a gunshot wound. anderson was a well known pioneer and promoter in the word of standup comedy and owned clubs besides those here in the district. >> he came up with an idea to take those improvs and franchise them and make them comedy clubs in big cities across the country. and that's exactly what he did. >> that was anderson's brother- in-law greg saks. he said anderson had been

battling depression for years and people were chasing him. sax said the family was not prepared for it but not surprised either by wednesday's discovery. the falls church man convicted of a sex off fence after police tracked him with gps is now asking the virginia supreme court to throw out that conviction a. jury found david faults guilty of abduction in 2008. he was sentenced to life in prison but now his attorney says the case was inadmissible because police used gps to track him without getting a warrant and the u.s. supreme court has already ruled that unconstitutional. prosecutors argue the crime committed was separate from the reason for the gps. time right now 6:06. i am watching your money. traveling to exotic destinations, finds like the perfect way to destress and unwind this summer but getting scammed while away is probably not on your agenda. travel scams are picking up so it's important to stay away of

your surroundings while away. the better business bureau has issued some warnings and travel tips to help you avoid any unnecessary headaches while you're relaxing. number one tip now, if you use the hotel's internet connection, been weary of where you click. the f.b.i. recently issue add warning to consumers about scam artists using these connections to gain access to your personal information through pop-up windows. avoid clicking on any suspicious windows and perform software updates on your laptop immediately before traveling. number two, avoid wiring money. scam artists have posed as distressed relatives in need of money to help get them out of trouble. the scam can come in the form of an e-mail or phone call. be cautious. contact family members directly to verify stories before taking action. number three, be mindful of your status updates. posts and tags on media sites can inform criminals to your exact location and putting your

massachusetts avenue, there has been an overturned vehicle here and crews are still on the scene cleaning up but they have reopened the road. in my next report, a closer look into virginia this time at 6:18. phase two of the silver line has one more big hurdle to clear before it gets back on track. securing support if loudoun county. the county's board of supervisors will vote next month on whether to opt in or out of this project. >> as peggy fox reports, some of them still have deep reservations about signing on. >> reporter: building metrorail past dulles airport and into loudoun county will bring huge economic gains to loudoun, including some 40,000 jobs over 20 years as economist -- says economist steven fuller but loudoun board member ken reed doesn't buy it. >> unfortunately there are a lot of people that have stars in their eyes about this. they think it's going to improve their real estate values and bring all these great jobs and we'll have a little bethesda but that's very

special live. >> reporter: he thinks ridership will be low, won't solve traffic congestion and most loudoun residents won't use it and he dislikes being connected to metro and all of its costs and problems. >> train operators are paying $56,000 a year on average and some people are making six figures with overtime which is more than we pay our teachers. >> reporter: loudoun commuters could probably still use a dulles metrorail station but they'd probably want to be dropped off because that garage next to where the station will be built costs $17 a day. airports authority c.e.o. jackpotter hopes loudoun joins in. >> what they get is again development around the stations, convenience for the folks that live in loudoun to access the metro to get to work. >> reporter: but there's still hope for metro to loudoun even with naysayers like ken reid if there's money for roads in the plan. >> if we can set aside a special fund that will include a highway project and our

60s. it's 62 here. we have spots around 50 north and west. it's a little bit on the cool side but it's going to be a great day. this dry air is going to heat up nicely. we'll be near 70 by 9:00. by noon we'll be in the upper 70s to near 80. this afternoon with northwest wind 5s to 10, humid -- winds 5 to 10, humidity levels will still be low. an 80-degree reading at 8:00 p.m. we'll hit the high somewhere from 3:30 to 5:00 this afternoon we'll poke up to 85 and just a great, great friday across the region. look at the readings down to 50 in winchester. i think i saw 49 in martinsburg. it's 52 in culpeper. gaithersburg. 57 in easton. our friends on the bay 62 from janet and bill in the upper 50s along with bowie at 57. and a 53 up in cross junction. so just a great morning out there. a couple of clouds but mainly clear skies on our michael & son weather camera. this is looking toward the

northwest in tysons. your humidity this morning 70%. great looking day today. we'll call it a fantastic friday with our weather headline but a hot weekend ahead. still not too humid tomorrow. maybe a little bit more sunday as highs range from the upper 80s to near 90 saturday and the low 90s on sunday. looks like our next chance of an afternoon storm will be monday as we dip back into the 80s. looking across the region, you'll notice the showers and storms from yesterday pulling away to our west high pressure which is only going to get stronger and that's why the temperatures will be rising the next few days. the forecast today looks fine, 85 degrees. tonight we're dipping into the low to mid-60s. most areas upper 50s north and west. 89 tomorrow. 92 on sunday. going over to the shore, that looks pretty good, too. today into the low to mid-80s but mid-80s saturday. 91 sunday. back to 84 on monday and as we look at the rest of your seven- day forecast, we've got temperatures which will get

into the mid-#s on. a -- mid-80s. a chance of storms especially by wednesday and thursday. it is now 6:16. here's monika with time saver traffic. getting word of an accident on the inbound side of the suitland parkway right before forestville road. be aware of that. crews are just arriving on the scene inbound on the suitland parkway at forestville road. if you're planning to head elsewhere, 95 between baltimore beltway and our beltway is absolutely final. no delays to -- fine. no delays to report. a live look at the beltway near colesville road. it may be a bit of a sunshine factor, especially on the inner loop as you head toward college park. this time we'll head over to route 50. if you're coming in from annapolis, no problems. we'll take a live look at i-93 as you came -- i-97 as you come to the beltway. a quick look outside one more time. if you're planning to head over to woodfield road at air park road, watch out for wires down and the signal lights are out

this morning we're generally all clear with temperatures as cool as 49 now at martinsburg. 50 in frederick. luray and winchester. but still in the low 60s at pax river and annapolis and here as well. going to about 85. i'll back in ath while and talk about the weekend -- i'll be back in a little while and talk about the weekend and some 90s in the forecast. a car went into the woods on the inbound side of the suitland parkway just near forestville road inside the beltway. you're going to find crews on the scene as you head inbound on the suitland parkway heading toward the district. otherwise i don't think things are too bad. southbound 270 coming out of gaithersburg all the way to the point where the lanes divide. you can see all the green. a live look outside right now, i'll show what you it looks like on the beltway. sunshine in your eyes on the inner loop. the outer loop should be okay. just the normal slow stuff into silver spring heading west on 495. back over to our maps and theme time to the inbound side of i-

wrongdoing. however, we now know that he will face misdemeanor charges in connection to the 2008 campaign. that investigation has been ongoing for some sometime now but we now know that he will answer to that misdemeanor and to a bank fraud charge today. >> this investigation is ongoing. we need to be sure we have a council chair, even though they're interim that can assure the ethical standards that really the council deserves. >> reporter: they say they need to address the campaign finance issue -- [ audio difficulties ] >> we apologize for the audio and technical difficulties we had in delia's live shot but of course we'll have more later on this story in our newscast and we'll be following it for 9news

at noon. we want you to know about a major development in a 9news investigation we've been working on for more than six months. richard kim, the owner of town square market now faces two years of probation for selling alcohol to a minor. that was just part of the sentence handed down by a d.c. superior court judge yesterday. he also received a 30-day suspended sentence, $550 fine and 20 hours of community service. kim was arrested in february after police caught him selling beer and vodka to a 17-year-old high school student. after thursday's hearing, kim says he wants to get rid of his store. >> i'm still -- i regret i even opened the store in the place. >> i don't want the business anymore. >> kim says he wants to sell the store as soon as possible but his legal troubles aren't over just yet. on july 25 d.c.'s alcohol control board will decide whether the town square market owner loses his liquor license. public health advocates

convened what they call the first ever national soda summit. it took place here in d.c. yesterday. sugary drinks contribute to the nation's growing problem with obesity, diabetes and a whole host of other health issues according to the summit. >> the rise in calorie consumption is undeniable. >> speakers also talked about new york city's controversial plan to ban certain large sizes of sugary drinks. under the proposal the city would ban the sale of nondiet sodas and other sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces. the ban would be in restaurants and some other public venues. >> sky 9 was over largo, maryland yesterday where six flags america is offering up a new adventure featuring hairpin turns in what the park calls pulse pounding inversions. that's only the beginning. we're talking about the new roller coaster apocalypse. the ride lasts two minutes.

riders stand four abreast and travel at 55 miles an hour. >> i couldn't do it. >> nope, i'm not even attempted. time right now 6:34. i am watching your money. americans are borrowing more for college and cars. the federal reserve says consumer credit rose in april for the eighth straight month. the $6.5 billion increase is on top of a nearly $12.5 billion rise in borrowing the previous month. the founder of best buy resigned yesterday from the company's board. he is 71-year-old richard schluze. he launched the company back in 1966 and is its largest share holder. he owns 20% of the firm but says he's exploring options for his ownership stake. s that's fueling speculation he might lead a private takeover of best buy. senator coburn release add report saying tens of billions of tax dollars have gone to

waste in recent years, money congress earmarked for certain projects but never turned out to be spent. he says more than $70 billion is just sitting this bank accounts. so why doesn't congress take back that money? here's his answer. >> i could write a bill that would get all that money back. the question is, is would never get to the floor. they don't want to fight the political battle he gave t and take t away. they don't want the negative press. >> democratic senator mark warner is also concerned so he's pushing for a law that would give congress a better handle on what's being spent and show in real time when money is just sitting around. can you imagine having that kind of money in your bank account. >> and who's they that wouldn't want-- >> aren't we in a budget crisis right now? amazing. >> a little rainy day fund never hurts. still to come when the news continues, get ready for summer like weather this weekend. >> your air conditioner about to get a workout.

welcome back. it's 6:40 and 612 degrees. -- 62 degrees. monika here with your time saver traffic. i would not say things have been too bad. we've had a couple of minor issues. there's one in alexandria where there was a water main break on telegraph road south of franconia road. it was a 12-inch water main break. on the north side of town you have your normal slow traffic. it basically begins at new hampshire avenue and will continue west to georgia avenue with the lanes open. let's take a live look outside right now and show you what it looks like on the beltway. it's also going to be agent bit of a problem with the sunshine in your eyes so bring your sunglasses for the day if

you're traveling on the inner loop, that's where it's growing to affect your drive. this time to the south side of town, overall northbound 95 everyone is behaving themselves. there are no problems from lorton into newington and springfield. also a live look at the beltway south of town at oxon hill. on the inner loop traffic is moving really well from 210 headed for the wilson bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll go to the north side at 6:59. it 16:41. we -- it is 6:41. we had a 9-year-old girl scout in yesterday and she reminded us this is the big 100th anniversary. 250,000 girl scouts are going to be on the mall for a big sing along tomorrow. you said even then they would need to have lots of water. >> it's going to be hot in the afternoon. don't forget the sunskin or wide brim hat. celebrate fairfax kicks off this evening and all weekend. should be great weather for that we've been out there on really hot days, on wet days.
