>> hello, everybody. i am bruce leshan in for bruce johnson. a celebration of 100 years of girl scouting ran up against searing heat and sweltering humidity on the national mall today, and scores of scouts and scout leaders suffered heat exhaustion and heat stroke. a quarter of a million girl scouts and their supporters were on the mall to celebrate the big anniversary, but d.c.

fire and ems crews had to treat 70 of them for heat-related problems, and they had to rush 15 people to the hospital. crews sprayed down the crowd from fire trucks to cool things off. they urged everyone to drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated in the heat. maybe there ought to be a special badge for surviving this steamy saturday. >> we had to use gators and bike teams to go through it and grab patients and snatch them up to the ambulance. >> we didn't get to be sprayed a lot but actually got to chase the ball, and it was really fun. >> we've been drinking plenty and staying in the shade. >> we're going underneath the fire hoses. >> good news tonight. we are told all of those transported to the hospital will be okay. anny hong will be here in a few minutes to let us know if tomorrow is going to be just as hot. a group of late-night skinny dippers in the fountain

at the university of maryland stolen clothes and purses, and then a sexual assault. surae chinn reports campus police are searching for a group of eight men and two women who robbed the skinny dippers around midnight and sexually assaulted one of them. >> reporter: the fountain is at the heart of the campus and some students i talked with say it's a tradition to take a dip in the fountain before you graduate, clothes or no clothes. but the next time you're looking for what police say is innocent fun in the fountain late at night, you might have to watch your back. >> in a lot deal like this, it's very tempting to dip your feet into this. >> reporter: police say that temptation of a midnight skinny dip ended in a crime with a girl's clothes and money stolen, one of them sexually assaulted. >> it shouldn't happen. it really shouldn't. >> reporter: ten people, most of them men, stole the girls' belongings. one grabbed a 19-year-old

girl's back side. >> we expect some kind of safety on campus. it's kind of dangerous. >> reporter: with the fountain going, the girls didn't hear the group approach them until the 19-year-old felt the man's hands on her buttocks. she screamed and the group ran off with their clothes and purses. >> plus it's really late at night and you don't have any of clothes and have to walk back home. >> it's a fun thing for anybody to do, but i would strongly recommend swimming attire. >> it doesn't really surprise me, i guess. i would hate it just as much to be in that situation. >> reporter: some students may see this as a night of mischief, but campus police are taking it seriously and are going through surveillance video to see if they can identify the group. when the group took off, they left a trail of the girls' belongings, but not all of their items have been recovered. campus police are asking for your help in solving this case. i'm surae chinn for 9 news now. university of maryland police are also looking for your help to identify the suspect in a strong arm robbery in college park.

take a look at this surveillance videotape. police say that this man robbed a shanghai tokyo restaurant on baltimore avenue after 4:00 friday afternoon. anybody with information about the case should call prince george's county crime solvers. new at 11:00, police in reston release a composite sketch of a man wanted in a suspicious death of another man they say the man is between 24 and 35 years old. he is 5'5" tall and of indian decent. police say he may be responsible for the death of 40- year-old barrack patel. patel was found dead just before 1:00 this morning when police were called to a house in the 11900 block of winter thurn lane for a fight. he suffered some type of trauma to the upper body. he lived there. they will not say exactly how patel died, but they are asking

anyone with information to give them a call. a horrible crash on the wilson bridge this morning killed two people and injured two others. it happened just before 3:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the bridge. maryland state police say the driver of a dodge crashed into the back end of a chevy, and then struck a tractor-trailer before bursting into flames. the driver and a front seat passenger were trapped inside the vehicle. they died at the scene. medics rushed a passenger riding in the back seat to the hospital along with the driver of the tractor-trailer. troopers say both of those two are likely to survive, but they are still trying to figure out what caused the crash. a two-alarm fire in a kensington apartment sent worried residents into the streets. the fire started in the ground level apartment just before 12:30 this afternoon in the 10200 block of kensington park

way. fire crews requested additional units while anxious residents waited outside and some of them recounted their lucky escapes. >> all i heard was the fire alarm, and then it was all over the place. i come outside, and then like five minutes later, it was filled with smoke. >> i opened a fire door to go into the hall, there was very black, very thick smoke coming down, and we actually had to get down low to crawl out, because i was afraid of breathing in formaldehyde or who knows what. >> it took firefighters just a little bit to put out the fire. no injuries. the cause still under investigation. it has been a big year for gays and lesbians in america. president obama's personal endorsement of gay marriage, bills in several states giving gays and lesbians the right to marry. our ken molestina was at the

capital pride parade today where folks felt they had plenty to cheer about. >> reporter: the capital pride parade for dupont circle has become a tradition in washington with floats and music and streets packed with crowds. the parade is the highlight of the weekend's events, all geared toward celebrating gay quality. >> i feel incredibly grateful to be here. it's wonderful to be in the capital city. it's wonderful to be in a city where it is emblematic of the changing force in this nation. >> reporter: amidst all the celebrating for capital pride members say there's a strong message they're trying to get out. >> just the quality. >> one group or organization or government agency that is on our side is one for the better. it helps everybody else jump on the bandwagon. >> reporter: for the first time ever, an american president has officially supported gay marriage. locally, the state of maryland passed legislation allowing for gay couples to wed. it's set to go into effect next

new information tonight about the driver of a jeep who police say deliberately plowed the stolen vehicle into a downtown office building. authorities tonight have charged 32-year-old charles ball of new market, maryland, with three felonies. just after 8:00 last night, ball allegedly doused the stolen vehicle with gasoline and then rammed it into the lobby of the washington square building near connecticut avenue and l streets northwest. police say he tried to use a lighter to ignite the vehicle. they have charged him with felony unauthorized use of a vehicle, destruction of property and arson.

ball suffered minor injuries. fortunately, no one else was hurt. authorities took him to the hospital for observation. overseas gunfire has broken out in the streets of damascus as syrian rebels have taken their fight against government troops to the doorstep of president asad. activist say that more than 40 civilians have been killed just today. this after asad's forces may have massacred more than 80 civilians on friday. drew levinson reports from the united nations. >> reporter: the violence continues to spread across syria. increasing concerns of a civil war. in the capital city of damascus, shattered windows and burned-out buses lined the streets. people who live there say this weekend's 12-hour attack represents the worst violence yet in this area. activists say syrian troops she would the southern city of darah with the uprising against

the president first erupted. this man points out the victims from saturday's attack that left at least 20 dead. united nations observers are looking into last week's reported massacre in the farming village. this farmer says he watched as men in unifor shelled the houses and those loyal to the regime executed several people including women and children. but a u.n. spokeswoman says it's difficult to determine what happened and who is responsible. some of the evidence is gone, including the bodies. >> the more time the process, it's more difficult to verify. especially in most of the world they bury the dead immediately. >> reporter: activists claim more than 13,000 people have been killed in syria since the uprising began 15 months ago. drew levinson, cbs news. finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro say they are ready right now to give spain an up to $125 billion bailout, although spain insists it's not a bailout, to

help save spain's banking sector. the euro group says the money would come from europe's bailout funds. the cash will go to directly to a pool set up by spain to recapitalize ailing banks, but the government will ultimately be responsible for the loan. the bailout plan and the commitment by its european partners to provide support, quote, are concrete steps on the path to financial union which is vital to the euro area. fast rising waters created a disaster scene in western wales. rescue crews are busy trying to save scores of people forced from their homes by intense flash floods. fire service, boats, royal air force helicopters are ferrying people to safety. houses and cars have been swamped by the floods. one for the record books coming up tonight on 9 news
