good evening. i'm andrea mccarren in for bruce johnson tonight. what a warm sunday it's been. temperatures reached the 90s across our area. but what can we expect tomorrow morning? anny hong is on the weather terrace to let us know what's in store. anny? >> we're expecting the humidity to stick around the next 24 hours or so as we've felt it tonight and are also expecting another hot day. today was the hottest day so far. today's high getting to 92 degrees. average high is 83. and we've had four days of at

least 90-degree weather this year. we had two in june actually today and yesterday. we had two in may. so it is the hottest day of the year so far. now, so right now, temperatures are still pretty warm out here. 80 in downtown. in the suburbs, a little cooler. 72 in leesburg. culpeper, 68. this is the reason why it feels a little heavier and muggier. the dew points are in the 60s, pretty much everywhere you look. what does that mean? here's a look at our dew point comfort index. in the 60s, it's anywhere from sticky to uncomfortable. so definitely we are feeling it a little more so tonight, and we will will also tomorrow. so overnight clear to partly cloudy conditions. lows will be 64 to 72 degrees. monday is holding plenty of sunshine with clouds filtering in. another hot one and muggy one. then changes in the forecast.

we'll talk about that a little bit later. andrea, back to you. >> thank you. well, today's high temperatures proved dangerously warm for some of the thousands who attended two big events in our area, the gay pride festival in d.c. and celebrate fairfax in virginia. surae chinn shows us some of the first aid tents and cooling centers to help the crowds handle the heat. >> i'm sweating everywhere. >> reporter: it may feel hotter than the tropical sun under d.c. skies. folks took pride in keeping hydrated and finding the cooling buses. >> we were just sitting over there still melting, and the guy was like, come sit on the cooling bus. that's a wonderful idea. >> reporter: gay pride goers found shade and relief anywhere they could get it. >> about lots of lemonade, lots of water. >> i don't have a shirt on and i'm drinking water. >> reporter: across the river at celebrate fairfax, people were a fan of the cool breeze served up by this machine. you've got to have the water

close at hand. and folks are loading up on ice, trying to stay cool. >> gatorade. oh, that's cold. >> hydration, hydration, keep drinking plenty of fluids. >> it could be 150 degrees outside, and i would still be here. >> reporter: first aid tents and cooling centers were stationed throughout the festival grounds. >> primary thing we're here for is the safety of the crowd, and we keep an eye on particularly days like today, looking for signs of heat exhaustion, dizziness, i remember tability, headache. >> reporter: some folks are beating the heat by limiting their time outdoors. people were sweating it out in the washington region and we're still a week before the start of summer. surae chinn, 9 news now. a murder mystery in reston has fairfax county police asking for your help. police were called to winter thurn lane for search of a fight and reports of a missing

person. that's when police found the body of 40-year-old patel. it all began with a call to police about a fight in reston. when officers arrived, they saw no evidence of a fight, but about an hour later, police received a missing persons report from a shopping center a few blocks away where 40-year- old patel had recently opened a dunkin' donuts. police investigating a missing persons found themselves back at the lane at patel's apartment where they found him dead with trauma to the upper body. tonight dunkin' donuts released the following statement. all of us are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of patel, a franchisee in reston, virginia. we send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. this tragedy impacts all of us, especially those that had the pleasure to work with him on a dialy basis. we are committed to support the

ongoing efforts of local authorities as investigation unfolds. a big part of that investigation could unfold this sketch ofa suspect in the case. he's described as an indian man, approximately 5'5" inches tall with a thin build. he was last seen wearing a gray, long-sleeved shirt with a thin orange stripe down the sleeves and blue jeans. should you have any information about the suspect, including, of course, who he is or where he is, you're asked to call either crime solvers at 866-411- tips or fairfax county police at 703-691-2131. matt jablow, 9 news now. we have new information tonight about the driver of a stolen jeep who police say deliberately crashed that car into a downtown d.c. office building. maryland court records show the jeep's owner filed a restraining order against 32- year-old charles bell the same day he reportedly doused the car with gasoline, plowed it

into a building near connecticut and l streets northwest and tried to set it on fire. the woman shares the same address as paul. charges against paul have also been updated. d.c. court records show he has now been charged with assault with intent to kill. fall is due in court for a hearing tomorrow. three people are dead and three others wounded after a shooting near the campus of auburn university in alabama. police say two of the dead are former auburn football players. drew levinson is at the crime scene and reports the alleged shooter is still on the run. >> reporter: hazardous materials teams in white suits scrubbed the crime scene near the campus of auburn university. a manhunt is underway for the alleged shooter, leonard. police say he shot six people killing three of them. >> that's a shock right now to know that this was all going on. >> reporter: investigators say the shooting happened at these apartments after a fight at a party saturday night. many people who live here knew the victims.

>> i can't really explain in words what happened, just feel real bad knowing that it happened in my own neighborhood and i see these people around every day. >> reporter: two former football players, edward christian and phillips were killed. a current player was wounded. auburn's football program is a big part of campus life here and the team is successful. it won the national championship in 2010. but police say they don't believe football played a role in these shootings. >> the only connection that the auburn football team has to this is they are victims of a brutal shooting. sometimes the young men get a bad rap, i feel like, but they're the victims today. >> reporter: in a statement, auburn coach said nobody should ever have to endure such unimaginable grief. we have a lot of people on our football team that are hurting right now, and we're going to do everything we can to help them get through this. and auburn's police chief says his department plans to do

everything it can to bring this case to a close. drew levinson, cbs news, auburn, alabama. locally crews are having trouble tonight actually out west containing two huge wildfires. strong winds grounded firefighting aircraft at a 40 square mile fire in southern new mexico. firefighters are also battling a 22 square mile blaze in colorado. dozens of structures have been burned. 1500 people may need to leave their home, authorities warn. some 500 people have already heeded the warning and are staying at red cross shelters. the fast-moving fire has become a top priority for firefighters and emergency personnel. >> due to the size and complexity of the fire, it will go to a type one incident, the highest level of incident. i think that's driven by a number of factors. one is the size of the fire, the fact that structures are at this point damaged or impacted. >> when nature is conspiring

against you like this, you've got a stiff wind in dry conditions like this, it's very tough. >> so far, one person is unaccounted for. fire investigators in new york say lint trapped in a clothes drier is to blame for a fire that destroyed actor robert de niro's manhattan apartment. the fire started friday in the 15-room apartment. niro and his family were not at home at the time. neighbors noticed the flames and called 911. >> i'm a neighbor and saw flames coming out the window and immediately decided to call 911, went back in the house and i was on the phone a couple of minutes getting them through here, cleared the house, came back outside and came down here right away. >> i'm very surprised. what's the likelihood of it being robert de niro's apartment. >> several of his employees who were working in the apartment at the time did manage to

escape unharmed. de niro paid $23 million for the three-floor apartment which firefighters say is now uninhabitable. we have good news for summer drivers. the average price of a gallon of gasoline has actually dropped 16 cents over the past three weeks, according to the lunburg survey which reveals a gallon of regular is $3.62. jackson, mississippi has the lowest price of gas. the nation's highest prices could be found in seattle at $4.21 a gallon. according to gas buddy.com, the lowest price of gas in our area is at the station on georgia avenue in as pen hill, maryland, where gas costs $3.30 per gallon. police in & business owners on the lookout for counterfeit bills in popular summer tourist destinations. we'll have details. first the bailout, then the

>> opening statements are set for tomorrow in the trial of jerry sandusky. the 68-year-old former penn state assistant football coach is accused of sexually abusing ten victims over a 15-year span. the judge in the penn state trial sexual abuse case denied a defense request to have the charges against sandusky dismissed. the attorney for the football coach asked the judge to throw out all 52 counts or at least to hold the hearing into whether some charges were supported by sufficient facts. now for the first time,

sandusky will face his accusers inside the courthouse. >> he is unequivocal in knowing what happened to him, suffering the unspeakable crimes committed against him, and he will tell his story. >> our home has been opened for 27 years to all kinds of people. i've associated with thousands of young people over years. >> if convicted, sandusky could spend the rest of his life behind bars. in delaware, police say the summer tourism season is also primetime for counterfeit cash. they say $15,000 in counterfeit bills are passed each month in delaware and police in nearby ocean city, maryland, say they already discovered several counterfeits this year, but so far no arrests have been made. authorities say the print on larger bills should appear to change color, because they are printed with color shifting ink. university of virginia's first female president is

stepping down. that's the word today from u.v.a.'s board which says her departure was a mutual decision. she took the job in 2010. her resignation is effective august 15th. sullivan said in a statement, although the board and i have a philosophical difference of opinion, i will always treasure having had the opportunity to work with so many gifted faculty and staff, talented students and loyal alumni. tomorrow morning will be the first chance for investors to react to the $125 billion rescue announced this weekend for the banks of spain. finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro say they made the agreement to help save the spanish banking sector. today protesters in madrid demanded to know why billions in aid would go to property up broken spanish banks instead of helping people who are suffering because of their mistakes. a financial expert says the reason spain's in so much trouble may sound familiar to americans.

>> spain had a bigger housing boom and bust than we had here in the united states. that means a lot of bad mortgage loans, bad real estate loans, to undermine the capital position of the banks. they are broke, they need help from the european union. the spanish must be very humiliated by having to take the aid. for them to actually have to go to the european for help like this was very difficult. >> they refused to use the words rescue or bailout referring to it as a line of credit instead. a dramatic moment as gabby giffords stepped out in public this weekend. she's campaigning for the man seeking to replace her in congress. gifford was shot twice in last year's attacks in tucson that killed six and left giffords critically wounded. barber is locked in a tight race with jesse kelly, a republican who narrowly lost to giffords two years ago. giffords stepped down from congress earlier this year.
