7:04 pm
allowed guests right back in the water. marriott wardman hotel on woodley road in d.c. is narcoticked as a premier destination -- marketed as a premier destination. so imagine the surprise of guests when they saw this sign saying the pool is currently closed for unforeseen maintenance, but according to documents obtained by 9 wants to know under the free dom of information act, the closure was actually ordered by the d.c. health department alleging staffs unable to provide certification of lifeguarding and cpr training, that the water system was in disrepair and conditions created a hazard to the public. marriott wardman park also cited for ignoring the citation and reopening despite the closure order. marriott declined an on camera interview saying in statement we take matters of safety and security very seriously. we contract with an outside pool management. the pool is closed until further notice as we look into
7:05 pm
this situation. we asked a district spokeswoman with the department about the information and she said it would take 24 hours for them to know what happened. it was said this sort of incident is a really big deal that could make the hotel vulnerable to an accident and even more vulnerable to a potential lawsuit. i'm investigative reporter russ ptacek, 9 news now. >> if you have a tip or a story you'd like russ to investigate, send him an e-mail. the address is tips at wusa9.com. in just a couple days we will know who will at least temporarily replace kwame brown as d.c. council chairman. the two leading candidates, council members phil mendelson and vincent orange and both spoke with our bruce leshan today. >> if you look at my record and look at the record of mr. mendelson, you'll see the majority of the time he's part -- on the losing side of a 10-2 vote or 12-1 vote. i'm generally with the majority. >> does it matter in a majority
7:06 pm
black city that you're white? >> it shouldn't but yes, it's still an issue for many people. >> that council vote is all set for wednesday. the citywide special election for brown's seat will be held november 6th, election day. if you are eager to get your hands on the newest iphone, you'll have to wait a few months. apple's ceo tim cook announced today the iphone no. 5 will be released in september. the company also announced a new macbook with a high resolution display that it says will contain 3 million more pixels than a hi-def tv. as for the much anticipated new operating system, ios6, apple has not said when that will be available. lee greenwood or justin bibb beer, a brooklyn principal -- bieber, a brooklyn principal banned the god bless the usa song from the department of education because she didn't want to offend other cultures. the children in kindergarten spent the last few months learning that song, but that's
7:07 pm
not the end of the story. that principal will reportedly allow the justin bieber song baby to be performed at graduation. that song features lyrics about a boy fretting over a girl who broke his heart. the principal got a lot of hate mail for that decision. so we'd like to know what you think. drop me a line, mailbag at wusa9.com or join the conversation on our facebook page. >> a bit of a scorcher today, but tomorrow is shaping up to perhaps be a weather alert day. meteorologist anny hong is in for top tonight. lots of rain on tap? >> we're seeing quite a bit of rain come this time tomorrow. we've actually declared tomorrow a yellow weather alert day because of the showers and storms we're expecting. here's a look at our weather computer to show you some of the spotty showers generally west of town. it's kind of hit or miss, very light in nature. so around winchester, in between gaithersburg and fairfax where you see green, that's where we're seeing isolated showers. right now temperatures 84 downtown, 77 in leesburg, 79 in
7:08 pm
fredericksburg, dew points in the lower 60s, 70s up in orange. what that means is it is humid out here and the 60s could be anywhere from uncomfortable to sticky and orange in 70 is where the humidity is oppressive. for tonight what can you expect? cloudy conditions, mild, muggy, isolated shower, maybe a thunderstorm generally west of town, lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s in downtown. when come back, i'll break down the rain for you, also talk about why we're concerned about some flash flooding. derek, back to you. this was the graduation speech heard round the nation, but should graduates have been told that you're nothing special? we'll take a closer look at all the controversy up next.
7:09 pm
7:10 pm
7:11 pm
it is the graduation speech that is the talk of the nation. massachusetts english teacher david mccullough, jr., told wesley high school grads nine times you're nothing special. well, a lot of folks love the honesty, but others say it's a bit of a downer and wrong for the occasion certainly. >> you have been nudged, cajoled, feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie, but do not get the idea you're anything special because you're not. selflessness is the best thing you can do for yourself. the sweetest joys of life then come only with the recognition
7:12 pm
that you're not special. >> you're not special, joining us now dr. gregory prince from potomac who recently delivered the graduation speech at rockville high school and at dixie college which is his alma mater. thanks for coming in. i got a chance to look over your speech and you seem to be saying exactly the opposite. >> when you have a special needs child, which our son who graduated from rockville high is, he's autistic and aged 22, you realize not only that the kids with the special needs are special, but the other kids are as well. >> so your reaction when you heard about this speech? >> well, i listened to the whole thing today and if you stay through the whole 12 minutes of it, you can see he's got the right idea towards the end, but that's not the way i would have approached it. >> was there anything wrong with the way approached it? i say that because the e-mail i've been saying is people say good, it's about time somebody told these killed they're used to getting trophies for everybody on the soccer team whether they've won or not, that sort of thing.
7:13 pm
>> what bothered me the most, not just the way that he said it is he seems to be saying that we're in a race and everybody is in the same race and only one person gets to the finish line and is declared the winner. you realize particularly if you have a special needs child that winning the race for them is working up to their capacity, whatever it is, but i think that holds across the board as well in. that sense we're all special needs people and students and what you want to do is to get each student to develop to the full measure of his or her capability and not put them on some standardized grid. >> i think also, though, isn't he right at least to some extent you've been coddled and cajoled and told you're special when you haven't done anything. >> you want to motivate them, but there are various ways and sometimes lifting them up may be a little better than whacking them on the rear end. >> you mentioned your own relationship with your son and how he inspired you to talk about things you felt were important. what did you bring special to your graduation speech because of your son and what he was
7:14 pm
dealing with? >> well, i told the students at rookville high i was giving two speeches to two -- rockville high i was giving two speeches to two constituencies. one was the bulk of the graduates who were remarkable not only in their performance but particularly with the way they dealt with our special needs son and other special needs students there and the other was to the special students and the way they go through life and ex hottering the other graduates -- exhorting the other graduates. >> we noted in past times in high school people like that were shut away. we would never have had to deal with them. >> out of sight. >> in a way this group is more special than others in the past have been. >> unquestionably. their ease around people with special needs is remarkable. we saw it in our two older children as they developed and as they brought their younger sibling along and their peers as well. they were just remarkable in
7:15 pm
their inclusiveness. >> as a person who has dealt with the young people of today on a continuing basis, how do you feel about them as a group is my question? >> i love them. i think they have some sensitivities that we didn't have in my generation. i'm 64, a little bit older than you, and i think that there is a terrific future out there, but they've got to be careful because it is a level global playing field. >> so they've got to work at it, but they can indeed be special. >> they've got to work hard, but they've got the tools. >> thank you so much for joining us today. we appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> we want to give you an idea just how this story has gone virtual, so we built a storified presentation. we've got a link to the actual speech on twitter. tim murphy said good advice, sober but still inspiring. dan calls mccullough a genius and says great speech with truth. on facebook we found a post
7:16 pm
that says this is by far the best and most honest speech i've ever heard. and another person took the quote climbed the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you and turned it into a graphic. that's a quote from the speech we should note. all right. lots more to talk about there. you can send your idea into the mailbag. meantime we've got a lot of rain coming our way. anny will be back with your forecast coming your way up next.
7:17 pm
7:18 pm
7:19 pm
so we have red, yellow tomorrow? what's the deal? >> tomorrow we're declaring a yellow weather alert because we can see some showers in. red that. means severe weather is expected or life threatening. tomorrow is more of a nuisance. we could see areas of flash flooding tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. you definitely need to locate your umbrellas by tomorrow. let's look at the doppler now. we've got some clouds out there and a couple spotty showers generally south of us and to the west. so most of us are probably staying dry through this evening. we see a couple areas of showers towards gaithersburg and fairfax and these are not long lasting showers. right now cloudy skies, 84 degrees, dew point in the lower 60s. so young it's still sticky out there. it is 80 -- yup, it's still sticky out there. it's 80 at andrews air force base, 77 manassas, 73 leesburg, 72 winchester, culpeper 73, annapolis 83 degrees. what is going on? out to the west we've got a
7:20 pm
cold front approaching tomorrow which will bring us eventually cooler drier air, but with the front we're talk unsettled conditions and it will be cooler come tomorrow. for tonight isolated thunderstorm or shower. then tomorrow showers and storms are likely. those storms could also produce some pretty heavy rain, so flash flooding is possible. then get ready for some drier air for wednesday. you don't like the muggies, you'll like the next couple days. our 9 futurecast, tomorrow morning at 8:00 we've got light rain which is basically some scattered showers. so that morning commute, some of you may encounter some wet roads, but look at tomorrow afternoon, widespread rain. look at the yellow, moderate to heavy rainfall that we'll see and also maybe some afternoon thunderstorms. tomorrow evening's commute looking pretty wet for most folks tomorrow night and then at 8:00 we're still dealing with some leftover showers and then after midnight into early wednesday morning this stuff pulls away and then in comes the drier air and it will feel a lot more comfortable.
7:21 pm
tonight, though, cloudy, mild and muggy, maybe an isolated shower or thunderstorm, lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s. 72 is the low in downtown, 60 in leesburg, upper 60s for hagerstown and martinsburg and annapolis will cool down to the mid-70s. tomorrow morning cloudy and muggy with scattered showers. grab the umbrella and then for the afternoon cloudy and muggy with more showers and thunderstorms, some heavy rain possible, highs in the upper 70s to around 83 degrees. so here's your zone forecast. in western maryland upper 70s for cumberland and hagerstown, upper 70s warrenton, manassas, 79 degrees in. downtown we're going with lower 80s. keep in mind average high is 83. it will cool down significantly compared to today's high of 90. annapolis will get up to 79 degrees. so tomorrow we have declared a yellow weather alert because of the showers, highs around 81, couple afternoon thunderstorms. wednesday is a green alert day because temperatures look pretty good, 80 and we're not worried about any weather impacting our plants.
7:22 pm
thursday a little, could 79. check that out on flag day, maybe a shower. here's your next seven days. friday and saturday in the lower 80s. enjoy the latter half of the week with the loyer humidity. as we look for father's day -- lower humidity. as we look for father's day weekend, pretty good, lower 80s, generally dry, a little chance for a shower sunday. if you want to take dad golfing, go ahead or take him to brunch. i don't expect these showers to impact most people's plans. tomorrow looks very wet, so be prepared, especially for the evening commute tomorrow. let's get to our weird news file because we all know there are few things tougher to deal with than the loss of a beloved family pet, right? yet at the same time it kind of freaks us out when somebody decides to keep fido or fluffy around long after their spirits have departed to the other side. >> yes. >> folks, prepare to be really freaked out. this is the orville copter. orville used to be bart
7:23 pm
jansen's beloved cat before it was hit and killed by a car. after an afternoon mourning period jansen had him stuffed and a radio control copter expert put propellers on the animal's paws. voila, the orville copter. now ironically orville had been named for one of the famous wright brothers who as we all know invented manned flight. he calls the or silver copter half cat half machine. we call -- the orville copter half cat half man. we call it just darn freaky. -- half cat half machine. we call it just darn freaky. we want to know how the cat people feel about that.
