wherever you may be headed. here's a look outside. still some wetness on our lens there. had some rain last hour. those showers have moved north of the downtown area right now. temperatures are up into the 70- degree range and it's sticky. it's muggy. we'll have the scattered showers this morning and scattered showers and storms this afternoon. by 5:00 79. that will be close for the high today. we'll be near the 80-degree mark which is nicer than yesterday when we were 90 for the afternoon high. showers and storms spread out from north carolina in toward new york state right now. the bulk of it though is north and west of us and we're not seeing all that much, although you see the showers lifting north through the region during the last few hours with some showers back in northern virginia. but on live doppler 9000 hd, i want to show you in howard county coming out of montgomery, right down 32 over toward annapolis, davidsonville coming out of shady side. this is lifting away from the metro. light showers in montgomery county right now.

>> thank you so much. outer loop after braddock road, an accident in the right lane. this one just reported so scoot over to the left if you're heading to the outer loop of the beltway passing braddock road. let me take you over to the maps. on the southbound side of the gw parkway, right here at the exit to the c.i.a., a tree down in the roadway. crews are telling us all lanes are blocked as they try to remove it. once you have one incident on the gw parkway early, it sets the tone for the rest of the morning. so keep that in mind. the southbound side of 270, a live look in clarksburg. no problems to report as you head southbound into germantown and the point where the lanes divide. a quick look at the maps on the other side of town. no problems on 95 or the bw parkway and a look in college park, the outer loop is fine into silver spring. in my next report, we'll take a look at gw parkway at 5:09. did recent media leaks jeopardize national security or just an attempt to help president obama win reelection.

attorney general eric holder is going to face the judiciary committee on capitol hill as they try to find out. >> some lawmakers want an independent investigation into recent leaks they believe came from the white house instead of the u.s. attorney's office. holder appointed two special attorneys to look into the matter. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the capitol with more. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. the two special attorneys no strangers to those in the area. d.c.'s u.s. attorney and maryland's u.s. attorney. they are together leading a pair of criminal investigations into the possible leaks of this classified material. three weeks ago the f.b.i. launched its own investigation into the -- into how the information about u.s. drone strikes and the al qaeda plot to place explosives on a u.s.- bound airplane was released to the public. some republicans, including senator john mccain, blame the white house for intentionally leaking the top secret information just so the

president can get reelected. sorry about that folks. obviously the president says that it is extremely offensive that some members of congress would insinuate that his white house would intentionally leak this kind of information, this class identified information which many say can hurt the country and is a breach of security. however, senator john mccain is one of the lead republicans who was outright saying in fact he believes the white house is responsible for leaking this information and he calls it offensive because this is the major, the most serious security breach that intelligence committees have witnessed in recent history. coming up at 5:30, we'll tell you why some people, including senator john mccain think eric holder is not qualified for

this investigation. back to you. >> delia reporting live from capitol hill. doctors are treating a man who was hit by a train last night in montgomery county. it was a csx train. it hit the man in rockville where the tracks cross randolph road near nerve ville street. rescuers took the man to an area strawm ma center. we are -- trauma center. we're hearing -- waiting to hear for an update. police closed off randolph road at the crash site for a couple of hours but those places are now open again. a former library worker at a northern virginia elementary school has pleaded guilty to 22 felony sex abuse charges. steph nonchristian worked for near -- stepon christian worked for nearly 20 years as a library assistant. yesterday he admitted to ole leasting at least seven boys. a victim who is now an adult came forward last year after

jerry sandusky's arrest. christian will be sentenced in september. the wardman park hotel in northwest -- [indiscernible] according to a health department memo obtained by 9news now, city officials ordered the pool to be closed friday. but hotel employees let guests once back in once itself inspectors left. the inspectors wrote the hotel staff could not provide documentation of a lifeguard and cpr training and the pool's water system was in disrepair as well. now the hotel has also been cited for reopening prior to a compliance inspection. it is 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> let's talk the numbers now. good morning, jessica. >> good morning. european markets are looking okay right now. okay is okay. it's better than bad. we're hoping some of those green arrows come home this morning when wall street opens up for trading. stocks here in the u.s. fell yesterday as hopes about a resolution of europe's debt crisis faded. checking the numbers the dow

stands this morning at 12,411. sank about 143 points in trade yesterday. nasdaq lost nearly 49 points and the s&p 500 was down nearly 17. jpmorgan chase c.e.o. jamie dimon may face tough questions on the hill after a new article in the "wall street journal." it reports some top executives and directors knew about risky investments in london two years before the group lost more than $2 billion. discussions about reigning in those started in 2010. dimon is expected to testify before the senate banking committee today. the nation's largest health insurer is sticking with one of the most popular features of the health care reform law. united health care says it will retain the rule that lets parents keep their adult children on the plans till the age of 26. the supreme court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of the health care reformulater this month. human that also saying it's going -- humana also saying

it is 5:09 on this tuesday morning. scattered showers out there right now. that will be the case for the morning. they'll turn into scattered showers and thunderstorms for the afternoon. not raining all the time but we'll have plenty of showers today. some of those could be a little heavier this afternoon. midday temperatures a lot cooler than yesterday. 76 by noon. 78 at 3:00 with highs around the 80-degree mark. we'll come back in a few minutes and look at live doppler 9000hd and looking ahead to the weekend. here's monika with your time saver traffic. there's an accident on the beltway outer loop side between braddock road and springfield interchange. it's blocking the right lane and authorities are on the scene. coming up in my next report, a problem on the gw parkway as well at 5:16.

here's what's making news now at 5:10 this morning. authorities have surrounded a home in montgomery county, alabama where the suspect in a deadly shooting outside auburn university is believed to be hiding. three of the six people shot late saturday died, including two former football players. auburn police have also charged two men with hindering the search for the suspects whose name is delmone leonard. the first witness at jerry sandusky's trial says he feels responsible for what happened to the other victims because he didn't step forward sooner. the former penn state football coach initiated a sexual relationship with him when he was only 13. sandusky is accused of abusing ten boys over a 15-year period. commerce secretary john bryson is now taking a medical leave of absence after being cited with a felony hit and run. he's accused of leaving two traffic crashes in california over the weekend.

a commerce department official said bryson suffer add seizure and he doesn't remember everything that happened no one was seriously hurt in those crashes. the presidential primaries are over in our area but there is an election today for a variety of local posts and statewide offices in virginia. we'll have details coming up at 5:32. >> at 5:21, the nationals keep hitting against their interleague opponents. >> next at 5:15 after some storms today, howard has a nice stretch of weather in the seven- day forecast right for father's day.

afternoon or this evening. your day planner, scattered clouds and showers. those temperatures not moving nearly as much as they were yesterday. mid-70s by 1:00. high temperatures close toward the 80-degree mark i believe with those winds south to southeast at 10 to 15 miles an hour. look at the moisture coming up north. not as heavy as it was yesterday when we were looking at it in the morning. however, we've got some shower activity now as we switch it over to live doppler 9000hd. light showers scattered about northern virginia coming through loudoun county, up into frederick county, maryland, coming back, the light stuff now mainly east of 270 in montgomery county, howard county and east of d.c. here approaching bwi. going to be a few heavy showers here over the next 20 minutes. college park, you guys are seeing the back edge of this area of showers. annapolis maybe another 20 minutes as well as shady side, it's just about cleared you. temps are up there. it's a sticky morning.

a lot of humidity. 69 college park. it's 70 in columbia. bwi, once the rain moves in you'll probably drop a few degrees. 74 there. out west we've had the light showers so most temps upper 60s to right about 70 degrees. as we look outside on the michael & son weather camera, a quiet morning out there. we've had a little rain earlier. that's why we still have raindrops left over or water drops left over on our lens. 70 degrees. humidity at 87%. just a couple of light sprinkles there on the hour at national. across the country the west is quiet. hot in the southwest. look at all the storms from oklahoma and texas. some severe weather north louisiana. see this guy right here going down toward the gulf coast? that complex of storms has robbed some of the moisture but with the front still to the west and the moisture around, the scattering of showers and storms will be with us today and tonight, at least the first half of the night before we see clearing after midnight. so 81 today. it will be a humid day with scattered showers and storms. a code yellow alert today. that's the sort of day that's

going to inconvenience you, slow you down on the commutes, maybe cancel some outdoor plans. breezy tomorrow, mild. 79 on thursday. looking good as we head toward fathers's day with highs on -- father's day with highs around 81. we have a couple of problems right now. i'm going to start off with the one on the gw parkway we've been telling you about. it's a tree down in the roadway as you head southbound on the gw parkway right before route 123 near the exit for the c.i.a. authorities are on the scene. park police are on the scene. it's going to take about an hour to clear up so you'll have to follow police direction to head south on the gw parkway. as you leave the beltway expect early delays. plus you've got the wet road conditions as well. the inbound side of i-66 in centreville, no problems to report here. over to the maps again this time heading north on 95. as you leave dale city, no

three hits, three strikeouts, picks up the win 6-3 over the blue jays. this is the nats' first four- game win streak of the season. last night the nhl stanley cup champs was obvious early on who would be king. new jersey picked up a five- minute mayor penalty -- major penalty halfway through. the kings win 6-1. moisted lord stanley cup -- lord stanley's cup i should say. it's their first championship in franchise history. mike shanahan's old home in the mile high city has a new tenant. peyton manning is shacking up at the 75,000 square foot home. it has a bowling alley and 3,000 square foot garage. not bad digs there. that's a quick look at sports this morning. we are live from redskins park for mini camp tonight.

>> here's monika samtani and howard bernstein. >> i have to get some hot water. got a little water outside in the form of showers. they're scattered about the region. most have been on the light side this morning. this afternoon we could get some thunderstorms to be rumbling across the region. as we look at the day planner, keep in mind we've got the threat for showers and storms all day. not an all day rain by any stretch. temperatures, though, a lot cooler than yesterday but it's muggy, sticky. 75 at noon. upper 70s at 5:00. highs about 80, maybe 81 degrees. you can see the scattering of showers and storms from the carolinas all the way up toward new york state. more rain in pennsylvania and new york, but locally we're still watching the moisture that's come through in the form of these showers. a few more moderate ones have passed through southern maryland and now most of this is north of town. you can see on live doppler 9000hd how northern virginia, warrenton toward leesburg, back to the shenandoah valley light

stuff. heaviest stuff is approaching bwi toward baltimore and a quick look at temps, they're running upper 60s to low 70s. a sticky morning out there. monika samtani, 5:28, how are the roads looking right now? we have a couple of issues scattered around town right now. i don't think the wet road conditions are helping much. i'm going to start off with a large tree down on the southbound tied of the gw parkway. park police tell us it's right at the exit for the c.i.a. and it is blocking the lanes here. you can follow police direction to get around it but you know if you're a gw parkway driver every single morning. it gets heavy early so plan for this on the southbound side of the gw parkway. let's go to the other side of town. no problems right now on the bw parkway or route 50. let's take a live look outside at bladensburg road. you're going to be final. we'll go to our traffic camera for that. on the northbound side of bladensburg road after route 50, there is a problem with the manhole cover and that may cause a bit of a delay.

back over to the maps. no problems to report if you're heading in from southern maryland. in my next report, another look at area roads. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. the family of a man who died in police custody is demanding answers. >> relatives and friends held a vigil last night for anthony chambers. d.c. police were called out to help the department of mental health services friday afternoon at an apartment on p street in southwest. police say the officers handcuffed chambers after he attacked them. and then chambers at some point lost consciousness. he later died at the hospital. family members say the officers are responsible. >> what they did, they restrained my brother, started checking him. they strangled him to death. >> chambers' sister says she was there and witnessed an unprovoked attack by the officers. he leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter. the medical examiner has not ruled yet on the cause of death for chambers and police at this point are not commenting while the case assured investigation.

today attorney general eric holder will traffic from the justice department to capitol hill. that's where the senate judiciary committee is waiting to question him about recent leaks about the war on terror. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live on capitol hill with a preview. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. certainly it will be a spirited hearing on the hill later today because they're not all fans of eric holder on the judiciary committee. the attorney general has appointed a couple of u.s. attorneys to head up an investigation into these possible leaks, but many on the committee and in congress doubt his own qualifications to do so. senators and the attorney general want to get to the bottom about how classified material like drone strikes were released to the public. the ag as i mentioned appointed two local u.s. attorneys, d.c.'s and merchandise mid's to lead the criminal investigation. but a number of senators

including republican senator john mccain who believe the white house intentionally leaked this information also believe holder cannot conduct an independent investigation. >> it's described as politics. don't take my word for it. take his word for it in terms of what's behind this. the. has absolute confidence in the attorney general. >> the attorney general of the united states has very little individual ability here and -- credibility here and i believe because of fast and furious with the american people. >> reporter: fast and furious is a failed gun smuggling program headed by the a.t.f. in 2008. many members of congress have asked for an investigation into eric holder's connection into fast and furious. that program in 2008 headed by the a.t.f. coming up at 6:00, what does the president have to say when

members of congress intentionally say his white house was -- is the one to blame in all of this. we'll have that coming up in a half-hour. back to you, mike, andrea. >> delia goncalves with the live update if capitol hill this morning. this afternoon school administrators will old a closing ceremony for louisa county high school. the class of 2012 received their diplomas last night after a tumultuous year. a week into the school year the earthquake last august forced the high school building to close. students went to class at the nearby middle school until trailers could be set up. the high school first opened in 1939. it will be demolished later this year. now to campaign 2012 this morning and today's primary elections in virginia. the commonwealth had its presidential primary three months ago but today voters will be casting ballots for virginia's u.s. senate and house races. polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. we have a complete voters guide

from $126,000 back in 2007 to $77,000 in 2010. because of the great recession, median family net worth in 2012 was no more than it had been in 1992 after you adjust for inflation. so that means it wiped away 18 years of savings and investments. much of the drop in net worth is being pinned on the collapse of housing prices. but local housing prices are climbing their way back. home prices in the washington area rose 11% in may from a year ago. montgomery county outperformed with an 11.7% increase. according to monthly housing data released by real estate business intelligence. a quick check on gas prices this morning. aaa says locally they're averaging $3.47 for regular. that's down about a half a cent from yesterday. and they're off six cents in the past week and down 29 cents in the past month. keep it going. keep it going. >> don't buy in the district.

forecast. look at it now. it's going away at the end of the week when we'll be all done for the school year. >> for some. >> friday is the last day of school unless you're going to summer school. i think friday is the day. 60s and 70s is what i know this morning temperature wise with the scattered showers. sunrise occurred at 5:42. we're looking at a day with lots of clouds. might get a sunny break here and there. for the most part cloudy with scattered showers and scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. low to mid-70s through noon. then upper 70s to maybe even 80, 81 in a couple of spots with a high before we're out and the winds turning to the south at 10 to 15. even mid-70s at 8:00. this evening still a threat for showers and storms. you'll notice the moisture flowing south to north. you get west of i-79, not much going on there. we do have a front which is still back toward west of detroit at this hour.

heading southbound on the bw parkway. then i've been telling you about this large tree down in the roadway southbound on the gw parkway right at the exit for the c.i.a. right now we're told by park police that one lane is getting through but traffic is already affected of course for early morning rush hour. southbound on the gw parkway because that's been there i would say for about an hour now. keep that in mind for your travel plans. northbound on 95, you've got a couple of long slow stretches from quantico into dumfries right through woodbridge and newington into springfield. we'll take a live look outside. at least the lanes are open. it's incident free on 95 but lots of slow traffic for you this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll take another look at area roads at 6:00. back to you. making news now at 5:49, authorities are now blaming a death on the wildfire in northern colorado. searchers found human remains inside a home that firefighters were unable to reach during evacuations over the weekend. the blaze has scorched 64

aviation and strike weapons program says the drone was on a routine maintenance flight when it went down near bloodsworth island. but we need to get used to seeing many more drones. >> reporter: those burning tax dollars are the remains after military drone. the military has used them increasingly in recent years to surveil and kilter i.r.s.es abroad. we heard last week how one launched missiles to kill al qaeda's number two in pakistan. we're seeing them more often in the gluns i think there's an inevitability they'll be part of our everyday life. >> reporter: this is a police drone in miami. >> it can hover and move so we can use it to gather real time information. >> reporter: but there are drainingers. a drone crashed into this american c-130 in afghanistan last year and the congressional research service says unmanned drones have accidents at far higher rates than manned aircraft. congress wants more drones in american air space and commercial pilots are worried about drone operators who are hundreds of miles away from their aircraft.

>> they want those people to be trained to the same level of safety and security as current pilots are for air lienls. >> reporter: mike weiss is a retired airlines pilot. >> we have hardened cockpit doors, air marls, -- martials. it's very difficult for somebody on board an aircraft to take over an airplane. >> reporter: when people think of drones, they think of small aircraft but they're not. the drone that crashed in maryland was 45 feet long. if you go all wait over to where mike the director is sitting, that's 44 feet. that's the length of the aircraft. the wing responsible is three times longer, 130 feet. you couldn't fit in this newsroom. >> they can cause an enormous amount of havoc if you were to bring them into a building, if you were to hit another airplane with that. if somebody hijacks the frequency and takes over the drone and operate it is

5:55. we have temps in the upper 60s to around 70. we are looking at a scattering of showers this morning. then a scattering of showers and thunderstorms. here we are at noon. 74 manassas. we may be having a thunderstorm going on then. we'll watch all of this activity, even through the middle of the afternoon the scattered showers and storms. so not an all day rain but the threat will be with us on and off all day. high temperatures near the 80- degree park. a nonprofit group in fairfax is on a mission to save and empower families in need of affordable housing. >> it helps people who are homeless get back on their feet. jc hayward salutes sheltder house in this -- shelter hours in this week's hero central. >> i wasn't able to keep up with the rent. i got maybe a month behind. >> reporter: karen faced annual

eviction last spring. her -- an eviction last spring. her job had been downgraded to part-time hours giving her a smaller paycheck. she and her four children suddenly became homeless. >> you're absolutely embarrassed when this happens. sure you are. who wouldn't be? you feel oh, my goodness, i can't take care of my family. what are you going to do. you feel bad but this program helped me to not focus on that but focus on what can you do to get out of it. >> reporter: the cath ridge kay hanley -- katherine kay hanley family shelter gave her a second chance. she and her family were provided with the basics: housing and food. >> when you come in a place like this, it's already, you know, you're thinking what are my friends going to think, what is the impact on my kids, you know. of course they were concerned and when i got here, the concerns left so to speak because the staff, they never

made me feel less dignified than what i am. >> reporter: the shelter in fairfax gave karen's children a safe place where volunteers assist with after school tutoring. ronald redmon is the board. of shelter house. >> shelter house certainly helps to try and minimize the impact that children in our shelters feel through bringing in groups to read stories to the kids, bringing in groups that help to put together backpacks and school supplies. >> reporter: meantime karen continued working at her job. >> you have to give to get. so i'm saving. together that's more for me. >> reporter: the shelter house staff helped karen creep track of her newly established savings. >> we have a strict program that we focus on employment, finances, and identifying housing. >> reporter: the goal for shelter house clients is to save 70% of their income. >> you're not here to live. you're here to plan. >> reporter: karen's plan
