a volcker rule. >> it makes it more difficult for those firms to function and perform their duty for the shareholder value. >> reporter: the volcker road is set to go into effect next month. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. there are at least five different investigations into the jpmorgan chase losses. the federal reserve, the office of the comptroller of the currency, the securities and exchange commission, the department of justice and commodities futures trading commission are all conducting inquiries. u.s. attorney general eric holder is saying no to republican demands for an outside prosecutor to investigate national security leaks. at a senate judiciary committee hearing yesterday, holder defended his decision to appoint u.s. attorneys to look into the leaks. he says both men have shown independence and have the ability to ask tough questions. >> these u.s. attorneys are fully authorized consult with members of the intelligence community, to follow all

appropriate leads wherever they do lead, and ultimately to prosecute any criminal violations to the fullest extent of the law. they will do an independent and thorough job. but let me be clear. unauthorized disclosures of classified information could jeopardize the security of our nation and risk the safety of the american people. they will not be tolerated. >> but republicans say the leaks about cyberattacks on iran and a plot to blow up a u.s.-flight were done -- [indiscernible] a new report from the few research centers suggest international opinion of the u.s. continues to decline with every drone attack by our nation's military. the report found in 17 of the 21 countries surveyed, more than half of the people disapprove of u.s. drone attacks. the same report found that 62% of americans support the drone campaign. the white house declined to comment on the report. the obama administration

considers drone strikes one of its most effective military weapons. here are the final results from tuesday's primaries in virginia. george allen won the race to be the republican nominee for u.s. senate. he's trying to reclaim the seat he lost to jim webb back in 2006. allen will face former virginia governor tim kaine in november. jim webb not seeking reelection. congressman jim moran held off a challenge by businessman bruce shuttlesworth. in the race for alexandria's city council, justin wilson, timothy lovain and more will be on the ballot in november. eric cantor beat floyd bayne with 40% ever the vote.

acting chairman mary cheh circulated a resolution to members. phil mendelson has the support necessary to take over the position vacationed by kwame brown. the 11en member council -- 11- member council will vote on the resolution today. a special election will be held in november to appoint a permanent replacement. dispensaries could be selling medical marijuana in d.c. within a matter of weeks. yesterday the district health department approved four applications for medical marijuana pharmacies. one of them is right near the tacoma metro station in northwest. >> it's going to be a very controlled and very well organized distribution that there is very little room or no room for -- [ inaudible ] >> three other approved sites for medical marijuana pharmacies are located along north capital street, northwest at 20th and m streets and 8th

street southeast on capitol hill. maryland lawmakers are expecting to make big money from the five casinos in the state but after the maryland live casino opened at anne arundel mills and reached capacity within the first 24 hours, some in annapolis are wondering if a sixth casino is in order. >> scott broom went to annapolis where they're crunching the numbers. >> reporter: everything following this believe there will abspecial session called in -- be a special session called in july. >> a sixth casino is viable in the the state. >> reporter: county executive rushern baker, once a gambling opponent, told a state group he's an enthusiastic supporter of gambling at national harbor now. what's changed in prince george's county? >> one, there was a statewide referendum where people got a chance to vote on to whether they want to have gaming or not. that passed and it passed

overwhelmingly in prince george's county. two revenues. >> reporter: all this is happening less than a week after the opening of the new maryland live casino just 33 miles away. the developer here fighting bitterly to stop national harbor. but a new study from the state's nonpartisan department of legislative services released today says maryland can economically support both, especially if table games like blackjack and craps are added into the mix with some legislators drooling over the newly predicted $160 million a year in additional tax revenue if it all goes through. in prince george's county the bottom line is this. the county government is broke and it would take a 10% hike in property taxes to bring in as much new money as gambling would. at the statehouse in annapolis, scott broom, 9news now. >> maryland is one of 39 states which offer casino gambling.

more than 340,000 americans work in the casino industry. the bureau of labor statistics expects that number to grow 13% in the next eight years. why shouldn't every american adult be able to do this. you can hold a handgun, put your child up for adoption, buy liquor, sign contracts, invest all your money in one stock but in most states you can't go to a casino. >> industry experts say gambling revenue accounts for less than 5% of state budgets. critics say the social cost like addiction which can lead to bankruptcy, embezzlement, theft and divorce are not worth the investment. more graphic testimony in the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial. penn state assistant football coach mike mcqueary testified he walked in on sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in a campus shower in 2001. jurors also heard testimony from an 18-year-old accuser who says sandusky abused him for three years. when he told adults what was going on, he says nobody

believed him. jurors in the roger clemens perjury trial must decide who they believe more, roger clems men's or his -- clemens or his former trainer brian mcnamee. the jury must decide if clemens lied to congress about ever using steroids. mcnamee testified he personally injected clemens with steroids and human growth hormone. the defense claims mcnamee has lied in the past and is lying again. the obama administration criticizing russia for its continued support of the syrian government. russia recently sent a shipment of attack helicopters to syria. according to accounts from u.n. observers, the syrian military has repeatedly used attack helicopters to fire on civilian populations. an estimated 13,000 people are believed to have been killed during the 15-month uprising. the 25-year-old wife of the

man accused of killing florida teenager trayvon martin is now in trouble with the law. george zimmerman's wife shelly has been charged with perjury. prosecutors say she lied about her husband's finances during a bond hearing earlier this year. george zimmerman is charringed with second degree -- charged with second-degree murder in the death of trayvon martin. two large fires continue to burn in colorado and dmum numb. -- and new mexico. the colorado fire has grown to 68 square miles in size. officials now say the fire is at 10% containment and they expect the number will grow. the colorado fire has killed one person and destroyed more than a hundred buildings. in new mexico the little bear fire is at 35% containment. the 56 square mile blaze has destroyed 224 homes and cabins. our time is 4:38. after all of yesterday's rain, today is expected to be much

"the wall street journal" reports that the number of unique visitors to the social networking site grew at the slowest pace in four years in april. the average facebook user spent

less time on the site and facebook's stock down about 29% since going public last month. apple ditching google maps in favor of its own 3-d software. the navigation technology company tom tom will provide mapping data for all apple devices. google stands to lose out on advertising dollars and information about iphone and ipad users. the majority of americans approve of reduced mail delivery. a new survey finds 80% of consumers don't mind if mail delivery was cut from five days or rather six days to five, but more than 90% say they would be inconvenienced if mail delivery fell to just two days a week. the cash-strapped u.s. postal service is looking for ways to save money including cutting back on mail delivery. >> i'm not really happy about that. maybe if they included saturday and eliminated monday or something like that. >> you like your saturday delivery? >> i like my saturday delivery. >> it's a thought. >> just sliding scale there.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it's 4:46 on this wednesday morning. we've made it to hump day at least. looking forward to the weekend. today breezy but nice. >> yeah. drier air is moving in so we're not going to be dealing with the showers and thunderstorms. in fact, looks like we're on a weather cruise control here for the next four, five days. >> i saw an alert go across the street about 9:00 last night. did we have any storms? >> we had a couple of severe storms out to the west for the most part. west virginia, virginia to our southwest toward culpeper, those areas really got it and in the mountains of west virginia. but around here just some rain and a little wind. it's all better this morning. >> and my lawn is watered.

>> there are about -- yeah, about four tenths of rain at my house in montgomery county from this. as we start you on this wednesday, we still have the bus stop forecast for a few. most are on summer vacation already. temperatures this morning under partly to mostly cloudy skies. 60s, even low 70s still. sunrise in about an hour, about 5:42. it sets at around 8:34 this evening. we're going to see a good deal of sunshine today with midday temps in the mid- to upper 70s. look at winds out of the north 15, 16 miles an hour. 4:00 still with those northerly winds at 16 miles an hour. 81 degrees. by 8:00 a beautiful evening although still just a little bit breezy. temps in the mid-70s but the key today is going to be the humidity levels that are dropping. look at the radar over the last six hours. andrea was asking about the winds and the warnings. you see that line going south through louisa and richmond? that had strong winds with it also. we had a couple of storms in toward west virginia. they've kind of weakened as they moved out toward the shenandoah valley and all is

quiet this morning. want to show you our dew point map. this is another way to measure how much moisture is in the air. not relative humidity because relative humidity is relative to the actual air temperature. this is a truer measure. when you see the numbers in the 60s and 70s, that's very tropical moist air. up here, the 40s and 50s, the drier air in ohio, pennsylvania, new york state. when you realize we've got a north to northwest wind, this drier air is going to come in toward us and it's going to kind of push all that sticky stuff out to sea. so we've got some nice humidity levels moving in our direction. it's going to feel a lot better here in just a few hours. right now still in the low 70s at the pax river naval air station. it's in the mid- to upper 60s in the shenandoah valley. here in d.c. this morning we sit at 70 degrees. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, still a little moisture on the camera lens there. a nice looking morning. skies starting to break a little bit. partly cloudy and 70 with humidity at 84% and watch this dew point number today. this thing is going to drop off a lot as the drier air moves in

and the north, northwesterly winds at 6 miles an hour. nationally we've got a nice air mass here across the midwest coming in our direction. there have been some big storms the last few days across parts of the southern plains. once again this morning you can see the severe weather in oklahoma and texas. another cluster of storms in the dakotas. around here, here's the front that went through us bringing the rains this morning across new england and off shore. but we're starting to clear out and we're likely going to stay dry for several days to come. maybe right through the weekend the way it looks. 82 today. breezy. some of the winds could gust to 25. tonight 50s and 60s. thursday and friday both pretty nice. i think temperatures both days upper 70s to near 80. we're going to take that through saturday. maybe a little warmer father's day about 81 but a good looking day for dads. monday and tuesday still not bad getting a little warmer, highs in the low to mid-80s. it's 4:49. monika samtani, the weather is looking sweet. how about traffic? not too bad at all.

things are looking great outside. good morning, everybody. here's what it looks like on the north side of town. if you're traveling between our beltway and the baltimore beltway along 95, you can see it's all green both directions here. no problems on route 29 coming in from columbia, bw parkway as you come in basically from bwi airport all the way down to the beltway in greenbelt, you'll be just fine. a live look at the beltway in college park, both loops of the beltway coming around the bend if you're heading on the outer loop toward 95, that's doing well. let's go back over to the maps. this time to 270 out of frederick. no issues at all i-70, 270 into clarksburg. we'll take a live look a little further south. here's what it looks like at the american legion bridge. still construction cleanup on the outer loop after the gw parkway. coming up in my next report, we'll go to 66 at 4:55. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. an announcement from the world health accordingization has confirmed something that has long been speculated.

diesel fuels is cancer causing. >> it was a bombshell for many who are constantly exposed to the fumes. ken molestina has more. >> reporter: diesel emissions, you can now put that on the long list of things that can kill you. >> that's pretty scary. it's so common. i feel like there should be a change if it causes cancer. >> reporter: the world health organization says fumes from diesel are in fact cancer causing. since the '80s they were characterized as possible carcinogens but now the organization claims there is no question about their harmful effects. >> to hear that is a little troubling to hear that. >> reporter: however, not everyone is buying it, a spokesperson for the american petroleum institute said the finding was premature stating, quote, the agency should have reserved judgment on the carcinogenicity of exhaust from fuels and engines until the research currently under way is completed. many times they are exposed from the elements from the emission. sometimes they have no choice

but to consume emissions from diesel trucks. >> takes my breath away a little bit but i never thought it was harmful. >> reporter: a report shows nearly 44% of their buses are run by diesel. but the usage of this fuel is not limited to public transportation. most any large truck or commercial vehicles on the road use it. now those who fear the effects of diesel emissions are looking for ways to stay out of harm's way. >> i don't know what else i could do. do you really have a choice? you can't really avoid it at some level. >> reporter: the last time the world health organization took a look at diesel false was -- fumes was back in 1989. we're in northwest d.c., ken molestina, 9news now. yeah, if you're sleeping -- sleepy during the day, don't blame a lack of sleep. three new penn state studies say the main causes are obesity and depression. researchers followed about 2000 people and found weight gain was the strongest predictor.

emotional stress was next. sleepiness has been connected to on the job accidents and significant health risks. a dramatic increase in the use of m.r.i.s and ct scans has also triggered a substantial rise in radiation exposure. a study of six large health care systems found that between 1996 and 2000, m.r.i.s quadrupled. ct scans tripled and ultrasounds doubled. research es at the -- researchers say given the high costs and potential health risks like cancers, clear guidelines should be developed for diagnostic imaging. a study in today's journal of the american medical association is putting the gender pay disparity gap in perspective. researchers found that over the course after career, the difference in what female physicians and scientists are paid versus their male counterparts could pay for a college education, a spacious house, or a retirement nest egg. the difference boils down to about $12,000 a year.
