year-old girl with one of the bombs, police say. >> this here is evidence -- >> the fire department is playing with this problem and has assisted police and prosecutors in making at least four felony cases in the last year. because while it looks like a prank on youtube, the danger is real. >> they can absolutely really get hurt. in a case that we had in april, there was a blast injury to the individual. one of her extremities as well as the possibility from the materials that are inside the component that can cause burns. >> in anne arundel county, scott broom, 9news now. >> people living in the neighborhood where two dogs attacked an elderly man say they wished they would have done more to alert authorities on this on going danger. dogs used to guard a towing lot and mauled the man. a friend of the victim said the

animals turned on him. he wishes he had done more at the time. >> my heart was like, boom, boom, boom. i thought i was going to get bit. yesterday trying to help my neighbor. i should have reported it. >> now there are only 8 animal control officers in the entire district. the department of health oversees this agency and says it's important for residents to be persistent if you want to respond. the dogs are now identified. a week long investigation has landed a fairfax county elementary school in jail on charges of child pornography. robert had been on the job less than a year at poplar tree elementary school. bruce leshan has more on the community reeling. there is less than a week left until the end of the school year and school officials say the principal is just trying to keep students focused following allegations that one of her teachers

possessed pornographic images of children. federal agents were the first to suspect that robert might be looking at child pornology his home computer. they alerted fairfax county police and authorities say a search of the new teacher's house found ten different pictures of children. >> are you concerned about the safety of the kids at the school? >> we are not. there's no evidence that we have that would indicate that any of the children are in any of the images. we have no reason to believe they are. >> a man who came to the door at ben's house decline ed to talk. but some of his neighbors say they are hoping it is all a mistake. >> i'm hoping he knows something that was unintentional. >> police declined to offer any details about the images or what exactly led them to

suspect them. the parents we talked to were confident of the principal's ability to deal with the crisis. >> how do you feel about this school? >> it's great. my daughter has a lot of fun there. >> the schools have suspended without pay and a school spokesman says there are counselors on hand in the building if either teachers or students need to talk. in chantilly, bruce leshan, 9news now. >> police reiterate all of the evidence was collected at his home in herndon, not at school. police are looking for the thieves who robbed an armored car. in the 12,200 block of rockville pike. the guards continued on to their next stop at the harris teeter. phil mendelson is the new d.c. council chairman and he became within one vote to replace kwame brown.

brown is the second council member forced out of office because of corruption charges and as bruce johnson reports, the stress and strain is clearly evident at the wilson building. >> please forgive me. but we have to stay together up here and stop fighting. >> should have been one of those, let's move on meetings. before that could happen, some of the d.c. council members had to vent. >> tomorrow, we could be in handcuffs. >> today was the d. c. council's first meeting since kwame brown was forced to resign because felony bank fraud in campaign finance violations. six months before that, ward 5 councilman forced out of office for stealing more than $300,000 from youth baseball programs. four-term councilman was voted the new chairman. >> what do you say to the residents of the city? >> it's going to take time and

work ourselves and collectively to do what we can to restore that trust. >> reporter: not without debate. >> we are devastated. >> reporter: vincent orange, one of second in command spots arguing that the council's ten democrats should not promote brown an independent. others sited brown's past controversies. other internet gambling, unpaid taxes, and federal campaign finance violations. >> the voters on all those particular issues that you just mentioned. i'm very proud of my legislative record. >> phil has been given that incredible political advantage here because he's going to run for the chairman's job in november. vincent orange will also be a candidate. you can expect others to run as well. meanwhile, phil says no major changes in how the council operates. he'll keep most of kwame brown's staff. bruce johnson, 9news now. in maryland, it was sentencing day for the man behind, designed to keep black voters from going to the polls in 2010. joule i julius, whose former

republican governor was ordered to spend the next 60 days in prison. prince georges county and baltimore. they told voters don't bother casting your votes because governor martin o'malley and president barack obama won this election. mr. obama wasn't even on the ballot that year. a bomb threat closed a fairfax county courthouse for several hours. hearings that were scheduled had to be rescheduled and all the cases were moved to a later date. a sweep of the courthouse by bomb sniffing dogs failed to find anything significant. the all clear sign was given and the court was reopened around 2:30 this afternoon. let's go outside to topper shut on a gorgeous night. top. >> it really is nice. as humid as yesterday was, today is dry and comfortable. let's start with temperatures. temperature wise, it's about the same as yesterday. we're in the 70s now after a high of 72.

the mysterious disappearance 32 years ago has finally been deciphered, but not the way her family had hoped. as peggy fox reports, it was a homicide investigation that police from virginia and maryland are hoping they can solve. >> she liked to dance and you know, sometimes she loved to poke fun at people. >> the family vividly remembers their youngest sibling and the details about the day she disappeared 32 years ago. >> it's extremely important that someone come forward and

help solve the case. >> 18-year-old cindy had taken a ride on bus from her takoma park home for a job interview at a silver spring deli. the deli called later that night to tell her she got the job, but she never knew it. police now believe someone killed her. >> we are looking for the help of anybody who knew her. anybody that was acquainted with her. maybe know her where abouts or seen her at the time she was missing. >> in 1982, a hiker found her remains in virginia at the foot of bull run mountain. in 2001, dna evidence in the case was entered into the national data base. in 2011, dna from family members was collected in an unrelated case elsewhere and finally last month on may 10, a dna match was found and using advanced technology, her remains were identified. >> when cynthia's remains were found two years after she disappeared, there were some clothes found as well.

clothes that may have been identify bid her family. back then, the prince william county police department was not aware of her disappearance and no contact made with the takoma park police department. and her family went on believing for 30 years that she might come home some day. >> i was angry at her for a while, because i thought this is not like my sister. how could she be so mean to us and not call? >> cindy's brother is grateful police finally found her, but he wishes it hadn't taken so long. police are asking for help identifying this man, whose name may be mike or michael. he was her boyfriend that she may have broken up with before she vanished. in prince william county, peggy fox, 9news now. >> anyone with information asked to contact crime solvers to help this family out. three more accusers took the stand today at the sex abuse trial of jerry sandusky.

a witness identified as victim number five said sandusky exposed himself, made him fondle the former penn state football coach in a campus shower before the 12-year-old could finally get away. >> mr. sandusky took him from the weight room to the sauna to the shower. a familiar story. >> earlier in the trial, a 25- year-old known as victim number 10 told jurors sandusky pinned him down in his basement and performed oral sex on him and made him resiply cat. the former coach admits to showering with these boys, but says he did nothing criminal. the man's life who is a mobster has died. henry hill seen here in this 1990 interview was 69. hill was actually a small-time gangster. he became a big-time celebrity with tales of the mob life. he died in an l.a. hospital after a long illness.

the state university of new york is looking to eliminate smoking on all of its 64 campuses. the comprehensive band would cover all grounds as well as vehicles. not everyone is ready to get on board. >> lighting up anywhere at any time near anything related would no longer be allowed. it would cover all 64 campuses throughout the state, including, where some students have big opinions. >> i think that's taking rights away from students. a lot of students smoke. social, not going to lie. i'm not a smoker, but i know people use it to socialize. >> it's against our regular liberties, of course. >> a graduate student says he is not a smoker, but believes the ban would be ineffective. >> already location has been imposed on restaurants and bars and they are still smoking. >> some ask what are the chances of the ban passing both the new york state assembly and

senate. mixed reaction from lawmakers. >> what are you going to do for a smoker to the edge of a huge campus and smoke? this is more nanny nonsense that we do not need. that's my opinion on it. >> we are approaching the end of what we can regulate. certainly we can't ban it from all places. this is about as far as it goes. i think if it got to the floor, it would be close. >> one of its big reasons behind the proposed ban is because tobacco use is a serious public health issue. yet others are still skeptical of the ban. >> i don't think it should be in every inch of the school, but maybe there should be a place where you can smoke. also it should be a place you can't smoke. >> quite open-door campus. maybe just in the entrances. i would support general distance away from buildings.

it is a celebration underway in baltimore. a fleet of tall ships arrived today to help mark the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. they will be joined by visiting

downtown. 16-mile per hour wind gusts in leesburg and 21-mile per hour wind gust in manassas. notice the arrow, cool wind and generally a dry wind. temperatures in the 70s now for the most part, 78 downtown. 75 in arlington. 74 in bethesda. 75 also in rockville. mid 70s at great falls and in reston. still 77 out in leesburg and manassas. that's one of the warmer readings. but upper 70s in college park and also beltsville. so here's the deal. staying comfortable for a while. open the windows tonight. give the ac a rest. some clouds tomorrow, but still a nice thursday. a very nice finish to the week on friday. and it will be warming up over the weekend, but still comfortable everyone even through saturday. for tonight, partly cloudy and cool. open the windows, 56 to 66. winds diminish and turn a little bit north, northeast at about 10. by morning on thursday, partly sunny and cool. 50s and 60s.

yup, that's the president marking father's day a little early. when he had lunch with two active members of the military. during that meal at kenny smoke house on maryland avenue northeast. they talked about the importance of dads staying involved in the lives of their children as they grow up. speaking of which, graduation

is thursday for herndon high school seniors. three of the students will not be able to participate in the ceremony because of a senior prank and that is on top of a seven-day suspension. surae chin talked to two of those students. >> it kills me. >> chris schumaker is deciding if he'll ever try on his red graduation gown. a senior prank, a baby oil in school seemed funny at the time. >> slip and slide, have a go ahead time in the hallway. >> now it cost him and two of his friends graduation day. >> i wasn't trying to avoid punishment. fact that they think it's okay to take away really the only proud day i'm going to have leaving high school, i disagree with that. >> schumaker say they hardly pulled off the prank. >> the prank we left ten minutes before class, i was caught. they violated me. they made me put my hands on the wall and searched me from head to toe, thinking i was going to be hiding big bottles
