political advantage. vincent orange will also be a candidate and you can expect others to run as well. phil mendelson says no major changes in how the council operates. he will keep most of kwame brown's staff. bruce johnson, 9news now. a showdown over the d.c. budget could be looming in the halls of congress. a senate version of a d.c. spending bill does not include a controversial ban on city funded abortions. the version passed by the senate appropriations subcommittee would also give the city a budget of $676 million. that's roughly $10 million more than the bill in the house. the version passed by the g.o.p. controlled house includes the abortion ban. syrian troops have regained control of the town of hafa near the coast. the obama administration says russia is supplying helicopters to syrian forces. russia has accused the white house of providing military support to rebel forces.

at 4:30, taking another look at the road to the white house, president obama heads to ohio today to lay out his vision for how to fix the economy. the president will say that he's focused on creating jobs for the middle class. mitt romney has also picked ohio to talk about the president the's economic plan. romney claims the president's policies are antibusiness. the head of the country's largest bank was on capitol hill answering questions about how risky trades caused the company more than $2 billion. during his testimony, jpmorgan chase c.e.o. jamie diamon apologized to the senate judiciary committee for the trading loss saying it was an isolated incident, but he also wants congress to put it in perspective. >> we'll lose some of our shareholders' money and for that we feel terrible but no client, customer or taxpayer money was impacted by this event. >> diamon said senior bank executives responsible for the

trading loss will probably lose some of their pay. some lawmakers are calling for stricter banking regulations. the start of the hearing was delayed by demonstrators shouting about foreclosures and calling diamon a crook. -- dimon a crook. more accusers are expected to take the stand today in the sexual abuse trial of jerry sandusky. yesterday three alleged victims testified about the abuse they say they suffered. one witness identified as victim number five said sandusky exposed himself and touched his gentles. >> mr. sandusky took him from the weight room to the sauna to the shower, a familiar story. >> earlier in the trial, a 25- year-old known as victim number 10 told jurors sandusky pinned him down in his basement and performed oral sex on him and made him reciprocate. the former coach admits

showering with the boys but says he did nothing criminal. the disappearance after woman from takoma park, maryland 32 years ago has now been solved. 18-year-old sibdy gastelle disappeared from her home after taking a bus from a deli to silver spring. remains found in 1982 in extra v.a. are hers. police are asking for help identifying a man whose name may be mike or michael. cindy's family says he was her boyfriend and she may have broken up with him before she vanished. anyone with information about the case is asked to call crime solvers at 1-866-411-tips. here's a look at some other things making news now. lance armstrong is facing a new allegation that he used performance enhancing drugs to help him win his seventh tour de france title. >> the u.s. antidoping agency has filed formal charges threatening to strip him of his titles. as susan mcginnis tells us, the agency says it has evidence of drug use dating back to 1996.

>> reporter: for seven consecutive years, lance armstrong waved the u.s. flag as champion of the tour de france. now the u.s. antidoping agency says he used performance enhancing drugs during his title runs. armstrong has repeatedly said he never doped. >> we've proven time in and time out there were claims. >> reporter: but the drug agency says it has recently uncovered evidence that armstrong used the blood enhancing drug epo as well as blood transfusions, testosterone and cort company steroids from 1996 till 2004. u.s. federal prosecutors closed a two-year criminal probe into armstrong this past february but unlike the justice department, the usada does not have to prove a crime was committed, only that drugs were used. the drug agency says it has ten former teammates who have testified that lance armstrong used drugs. it also says armstrong used a campaign of intimidation to

keep witnesses from testifying. tyler hamilton is one witness who came forward. >> i did see a blood transfusion. >> reporter: he told 60 minutes he saw armstrong use drugs during the 1999 tour de france. >> really no difference between lance armstrong and the majority of -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: armstrong claims there is a difference between him and the cyclists who were busted using drugs. he says i have competed as an endurance athlete for 25 years with no spike in performance. passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> lance armstrong retired from cycling in 2011. he's been competing as a triathlete since then but he will not be allowed in those competitions while there is an open drug investigation. federal prosecutors in north carolina say they plan to drop all charges against john edwards. the former senator's trial on corruption charges ended in a

hung jury on all but one count last month. edwards was eventually acquitted on the final charge. prosecutors say they will not seek a new trial. the man accused of killing three people near auburn university is in jail. delmonte leonard surrendered peacefully. he opened fire at a fight over a woman at a pool fire. she contacted u.s. marshals after leonard's family asked her for help. she picked up leonard and drove him to the federal courthouse in montgomery. residents living near glacier view, colorado have received a new evacuation order. 1500 homes have been prepared to evacuate at any moment. it continues at the high park fire continues to grow in size. more than 1,000 firefighters are continuing to work to contain this blaze. on wednesday president obama sign add new law which allows the forest service the ability

mostly cloudy. we'll see a little more sunshine as we go throughout the afternoon and a comfortable day. highs upper 70s to 80, 81. the northwest winds at 10 will gust towards 15. we'll come back with the seven- day forecast. we have some 90s on it. we'll let you know what that is going to happen. here's 270 on the southbound side of montrose road. all lanes are open coming down from frederick past clarksburg to rockville and the point where the lanes divide. coming up another look at area roads at 4:47. the time right now is 4:40. it's time to check your money. investor concerns about europe are growing. interest rates in spain and italy have shot higher signaling investors don't really have all that much faith that those countries can repay their debts. there are reports greeks are withdrawing a billion dollars a day from banks ahead of this weekend's elections which could force the country out of the euro currency. stocks lost more ground as investors responded to

developments. looking at the markets, the dow starts this morning at 12,496. after sliding 77 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was off by 24. and the s&p 500 was down by 9. foreclosures jumped 9% in may compared to april. according to realty track, foreclosure activity rose back above 200,000 for the first time since february. for the first time in six years, georgia has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. there are fewer summer jobs for teens. new government figures show seven out of ten teens cannot find a job. the report also says unemployment among 16 to 19- year-olds is steeper than for any other age group. experts say some of the drop is cultural as more teens spend summers in camp or in school. the figures also showed teens from low-income families were least likely to find summer work. apple wants to take seri on

the road. it's working on a form of its virtual assistant on the road. it's working to develop a button on the steering wheel to summon siri for directions or to change the radio station. the idea is to create a feature that won't require you to take your eyes off the road. only a matter of time till siri is actually driving you to the grocery store. >> we saw some of these prototypes at consumer electronics earlier this year. it's really kind of scary and exciting about what you can do. >> you never have to leave the car once you get in. >> there is some of that technology obviously deployed some in vehicles but it's nothing along the lines of that and obviously what you saw. it's so cool. >> it is cool. a new study is casting doubt on the omega 3 theory when it comes to keeping your mind sharp. >> we'll have more on that story plus your weather first when we return in just two minutes. keep it here.

good morning. welcome back to nine fine now. coming up -- 9news now. coming up on 4:45. we're almost there, almost to father's day. it's flag day today. looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. any breeze to flap the flags around? >> yes. temperatures are going to be in a great range. upper 70s, 80, 81 if we can eke out enough sunshine. looks pretty good out there. your bus stop forecast, virginia still going. you know they start a little late and end a little late. friday, the last day. >> the little ones out of school after friday. >> isn't that great? >> yeah. no. >> bus stop forecast, we've got mostly cloudy skies out there. it's a little on the cool side with mid-50s toward the shenandoah valley. the farther east you go, temperatures in the upper 60s, even 70 here in washington. sunrise at 5:42. it sets at 8:35 this evening. 70 by 8:00 at national. by noon still partly to mostly cloudy. mid-70s. this afternoon a little bit

more sunshine. that will push temperatures close to the 80-degree mark with a northeast wind 10, 12, maybe gusting 15 miles an hour. but a very comfortable day ahead. right now we've got 54 in winchester. cumberland 52. even 49 toward harrisonburg with some of the clouds around we're holding on to the 60s and even low 70s. pax river 72. gaithersburg 63. outside on the michael & son weather camera, good visibility in spite of the clouds. 70 degrees and northwest wind at 10 miles an hour. the air has really dried out. humidity only 55%. boy was it really sticky around here a couple days ago. but all that rain we had, this is the front. it's way off shore. what we're watching now are some big storms this morning ahead of a front. that's pushing through the dakotas. right now these storms are moving east and then northeast. i don't really see a front here until maybe the middle of next week the way it's going. in the southeast we've got the scattering of showers and

storms left over from the same front yesterday but with us, tough to tell the low clouds and the northeasterly winds but they're out there this morning. there's nothing really coming toward us. a low in the atlantic will move to the south. as it does, it should help to pull some of the clouds away. interestingly enough, this computer model trying to get a couple of sprinkles to pop north and west of us. i think that's overdone. but stranger things have happened. tonight partly cloudy. tomorrow again turning out to be mostly sunny and pleasant and nothing really heads our way for the foreseeable future, at least through the weekend. as we look at the forecast, pleasant today. a little more sun this afternoon. 79. tonight we're back in the 50s and 60s once again. very nice friday and saturday with sunny skies, highs 80, 81. then we start a slow warming trend for your weekend. by father's day 83. monday 86. here comes the heat tuesday and wednesday. low to mid-90s by wednesday. and wednesday by the way summer

begins at 7:09. how appropriate to be back in the 90s. it is 4:47. good morning, everybody. overnight at about 1:30 this morning, there was a very serious accident out in gambrells here at route 32. authorities are on the scene. it is involving one fatality and they're still investigating at the scene of the accident. again this happened at 1:30 this morning. two scriks involved and -- two vehicles involved and you will be detoured through the area fcht you plan to head northbound on 97 here at route 32. we'll take a live look at college park where there are no problems to report at route 1. you're fine as you travel on the outer loop toward 95 and on the outer bend to silver spring. this time 270 coming out of frederick, no issues to report right now from i-70 all the way down the line to the point where the lanes divide.

and we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge on the west side of town, and traffic is moving well across the river. in my next report we'll take another look at area roads. but first, from now on the new york avenue, florida avenue, gallaudet university metro station will simply be known as noma-gallaudet. mayor vincent gray and metro officials gathered at redline station wednesday to make the change. the king street and navy yard stations will also get new names this year. back to you, jessica and andrea. >> thank you, monika. many of you have probably heard consuming omega 3 fatty acids can slow down the natural decline in cognitive abilities as we age. >> but new research subjects this may not be true, at least in the short term. dick brennan has more. >> reporter: dory has been taking supplements of omega 3 fish oils for ten years hoping to stay healthy and keep her mind sharp. >> if it could possibly work, then it's fine with me. i would be delighted. >> reporter: it's long been thought the fatty acids found in fish and nuts are good for

the brain but a new review of past studies found older people who took omega 3 supplements did not score any better on thinking and memory tests than participants who took a placebo. >> this is a great shame. it would be lovely to find a solution for cognitive decline and dementia but unfortunately the evidence as it stands at the moment suggests that omega 3 fats are not a benefit, do not benefit cognitive function in older people. >> reporter: but other experts say the studies weren't long enough and the patients weren't old enough. >> those were young patients by any standard. there were -- they were in their 60s, early 70s. today that's middle age. >> reporter: omega 3 fatty acids are an important part of a healthy diet and may provide health benefits so even the study's authors recommend people continue to eat two servings of fish per week. as for the supplements, the authors say it's up to the individual to make the decision. dory says she's not giving them up. >> i've heard and read more

positive things about it so i will continue it. it doesn't seem to have anything that would be harmful. >> reporter: doctors say diet along with physical and mental activity will go a long way towards keeping the mind young. dick brennan for cbs news, long island. >> fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids include mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, herring and trout. in other health news, growing body parts in the lab is no longer science fiction. in this case a 10-year-old girl in sweden had a severe vain blockage to -- vein blockage to her liver. her doctors took a donor vein from a cadaver, stripped it and used stem cells from the girl's bone marrow to grow a million more cells to cover the vein. it saved her from needing a liver transplant and she doesn't need antirejection drugs. the swedish team says this is the future of tissue engineering making tailor made organs for patients. a new study shows another negative association with childhood obesity. poorer math scores.

researchers in missouri found children who were obese starting in kindergarten performed worse on matt tests in first grade through fifth grade. for boys who became obese later in third and fifth grade, no differences were found. research says for boys and girls obese through their elementary school years, feeling sadder and more anxious explained some of their poorer math performance. the vast majority of seniors are unable to cross the street in time. more than 75% of people ages 65 and older were unable to walk 3.9 feet per second, the space needed to use a pedestrian crossing in england and many other parts ever the world. the study found older men averaged an average of 2.9 feet and women 2.6 feet per second. researchers say not being able to cross a busy street severely impacts seniors' quality of life. a large number of u.s. troops returning from war zones suffer from brain injuries and

states. president obama marked father's day early with a barbecue lunch. he met with two active duty members of the military and two local barbers at kenny's barbecue smokehouse. love this place on maryland avenue in northeast d.c. the barbers are part of a program called fatherhood buzz. the program reaches out to dads through barber shops about topics like financial literacy and job training. a celebration is under way in baltimore. a fleet of tall ships has arrived at the inner harbor to help mark the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. they'll be joined by visiting modern war ships. free public tours of the historic and modern ships will be available over the next several days. saturday night live veterans adam sandler and andy sandberg team up for the new father-son comedy "that's my boy." >> sandler plays a hard partying playboy while andy sandberg plays his straight
