12:00 pm
hello. thank you for joining us. i'm jc hayward. police are investigating a homicide that occurred in northeast washington. police were called to the 700 block of h street northeast just before 7:00 this morning. they found a woman.
12:01 pm
kristin fisher joins us live from the scene with more information. >> reporter: this is still a very active crime scene. five hours after the body of the owner of the grace deli was found inside the store just across the street. police did not confirm her identity, still will not. they're being very tight lipped about this entire investigation. but i just spoke with her son who is absolutely broken up. the woman's name is june le. she was in her very early 60s. she has owned this deli for eight years and she's a beloved member of this community. she's the kind of woman who knows all of her clients' names and has their order ready by the time they arrive at the store for lunch. she loved everybody, lostled her job. she was -- loved her job. she was about to retire. she had a grandchild on the way. she was about to move to the eastern shore to retire with her husband, was very excited about life and now it seems that her life was cut tragically short today. in terms of the investigation, what we know is that she
12:02 pm
arrived -- this is her car. you actually can't see t. eight right on the other side of that police van. but it is a red toyota corolla. she arrived around 6:00 this morning and was unloading lots of supplies her son said. that was pretty much her morning ritual, unloading stuff for the rest of the day. and the working theory and this is just a theory at this point in time is that somebody approached her at some point during this unloading process and attempted to rob her. this is a theory that the son heard from police, but again just a theory. we still don't know exactly what happened, what the motive was, or what happened inside the store. her body was found by another employee just before 7:00. police arrived on the scene shortly after and they've been here ever since. that entire block right there is still secured by crime scene tape. detectives have been seen
12:03 pm
brushing for fingerprints, going through trash cans, seeing if they can find any shreds of evidence. her body was removed from the scene. it's been taken to the medical examiner where they're going to be conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. that's sort after mystery here. june le's son who i just finished talking to says there is no real clear sign of trauma to the body which had at first had them thinking that maybe she had died of natural causes. but whatever police found inside that store led them to believe that there was foul play and that's why they're investigating this as a homicide. i'll have more coming up at 5:00 in our evening news. back you to, jc. >> kristin fisher reporting live. thank you very much. well, the prosecution could wrap up its case by tomorrow in the jerry sandusky trial sex abuse trial. one witnesses that given graphic testimony. while the former penn state

assistant coach listens with very little emotion. manuel gallegus reports now from the courthouse from bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky headed back into court to face yet another accuser. >> how you holding up so far? >> reporter: a soft spoken 25- year-old man known as victim number six took the stand. he said he met sandusky in 1998 when he was 11 at a charity picnic. he claims the former assistant football coach then invited him to work out at penn state and later coaxed him into the shower. the accuser says sandusky lifted him in the shower to get the soap off his face and then he said, that's the last thing i remember. it's kind of black after that. the man testified they were both naked but he did not remember sandusky ever touching his private parts. when the boy came home with wet hair, his mother went to the police but no charges were filed at that time against sandusky. during cross-examination, the witness acknowledged staying friends with sandusky and his wife, dottie till just last user -- last year, going to
12:05 pm
their home on football days, borrowing their car, even going on a fishing trip with sandusky when he was 23 years old. the man testified that his perception of sandusky changed as investigators began questioning him and he thought more about how inappropriate it was to shower with sandusky as a boy. scan dusky is charged with -- sandusky is charged with 52 criminal accounts of sexually abusing boys. the defense is looking for inconsistencies in the witnesses' testimony and suggesting they are out to make money. manuel gallegus, cbs news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. 68-- >> 68-year-old sandusky could take the stand in his own defense next week. we're turning our attention to campaign 2012. former virginia governor george allen received a key endorsement in his run for his old u.s. senate seat. allen was joined by florida senator marco rubio at company flowers. that's the family-owned small business in arlington. >> that's what our campaign is
12:06 pm
about. it is to motivate and inspire people towards our blueprint for america's comeback, to reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit of our country. >> reporter: you have someone to elect someone like george allen to the senate. >> he's not going to have to take the orientation course. >> thank you, guys. >> well, allen now faces former governor tim kaine in november. and senator rubio has quickly become a leader in the republican party and he's on the short list for mitt romney's possible vice presidential pick. phil mendelson is the number two man in the district now. he is interim chairman of the d.c. city council. the council selected the at large democrat as its leader, and mendelson will now replace kwame brown. brown resigned last week before pleading guilty to bank fraud. mendelson will serve as interim chairman through the year and then voters will select an official new chair in november.
12:07 pm
mendelson says he plans to run in that race. kwame brown and harry thomas, jr. have both resigned in disgrace if the city city council in the last six months. the entire council got a lecture yesterday from councilman marion barry. >> the majority in the community has lost confidence in this council, has lost trust in this council. we're at the bottom of the barrel in terms of credibility. we were 60. but we'd probably be 10. this is serious. this is no game. >> marion barry went on to say, quote, this is the greatest governmental crisis since home rule. i can't think of anything except 9/11 that's been more horrific. well, d.c. mayor vincent gray officially kicked off the

facelift project along u street northwest. the ddot construction project will address blocks from 9th street to 14th street. roads will be repaired and repaved. sidewalks will be widened, and new landscaping will be installed. the $5 million renovation project is scheduled to be completed by next spring. still to come when 9news now continues, more details of what some thought was a ufo sighting. we'll have an explanation when we come back. cycling legend lance armstrong is in deep trouble after allegations of doping resurface.

12:11 pm
>> thank you, jc. it's always a pleasure to be with you. certainly the two most important irks for people 50 and older and their families right now would be questions about social security and medicare. whether you're a current beneficiary of st. and medicare, which sometimes people are much younger than 50 because their parents have passed away and so forth. there are a lot of people really concerned about is it going to be there and is it going to be there for them. >> should you take it at an early age when you get 66 or should you wait till you're 70 or older? >> all those are issues on the table. the second issue at a national level which aarp is very interested like many people in the country is what is the supreme court going to do with the affordable care act, because that also has implications for medicare and the donut hole in terms of prescription benefit. the last one particularly at the local level in this area, utilities has been on the minds of a lot of our members and 50 plus and those not 50 plus. and we've been working with and
