yellow, blue and orange line. kristen fisher takes a look at how things went this morning. >> this is crazy. passing out papers i don't know how to read it. >> reporter: metro riders tried to make sense of rush plus. it is supposed to make the busiest trains at the busiest stations less crowded. on day one it also made for more confusion. >> one thing you are trying to read the lines and the signs on the train. i hope i get to the right station at the right time. >> reporter: three new trains an hour before vienna -- between vienna and largo train center. but more trains on the orange lines mean less trains on the blue lines. for some rush plus is a minus. >> there is a lot of people confused today. >> reporter: one of the businessest changes is -- --

biggest changes is this. >> the key to understanding it is it is not just about the line color any more, you also should look at the destination sign on the side of the train or on the platform displays to make sure you are going in the right direction. >> reporter: what do riders think? >> so far no big deal. we'll see what happens. >> i have to tell you at the end of the day, if we get there on time that will be the best bet. >> reporter: kristen fisher 9news now. by the way riders on the red line are not affected by metro's new program. commuters will be paying less to catch a taxi cab in the district of columbia. beginning thursday customers will no longer have to pay the $1 fuel surcharge. it has been in effect since march of last year. cab drivers asked for the surcharge as gasoline prices

spiked. the average cost of a two mile cab ride will be dropping by 12%. an autopsy is being conducted today on the body of rodney king. king died this weekend at the age of 47. his police beating that occurred nearly 20 years ago sparked some of the worst rioting that los angeles had seen. here's more now from king's hometown. >> reporter: rodney king's daughters spent father's day in tears. the two hugged themselves outside the home where king was found dead in the pool hours earlier. king's fiance was outside with king in the early morning hours. she headed back into the home and when she returned, king, an avid swimmer, was at the bottom of the pool. >> she did make several attempts to try and pull him out of the pool. >> reporter: within an hour, king was pronounced dead.

his death is described as an accident. johnny kelly was king's friend of 30 years. >> rodney had a lot of nightmares and panic attacks and the way he would handle those things was by drinking. >> reporter: king was drinking the night los angeles police stopped him in 1991. the officers involved were acquitted, sparking one of the nation's worst race riots. king pleaded for an end to the violence. king spent the last decade living here in this california home. neighbors remember him as a friendly and mellow guy. >> very quiet, withdrawn. >> reporter: king struggled poc signs of drugs or alcohol near the pool. two months ago, he put out a memoir and was aware of his place in history. >> can we all just get along, that is how i would like to be remembered after i'm dead and gone. >> reporter: the coroner will perform an autopsy monday

morning. king was awarded almost $4 million in his civil trial, in the 1-d 90s. one of the jurors, cynthia kelly, who was in that trial, later became his fiance. king contacted her after that trial was over. a big achievement today for the chinese space program. the country's news service says for the first time ever, a piloted spacecraft docked with an unmanned space laboratory. the spacecraft is carrying three astronauts, including the first female in the chinese space program. until today the u.s. and russia were the only countries to pull off an orbital docking. egypt's ruling military council is promising to hand over power to the newly elected president by the end of the month. the muslim brotherhood says its candidate won the election this weekend. it was the first free presidential vote since the ouster of hosni mubarak 16

months ago. the military says the new president will have the power to appoint and dismiss government officials. but the ruling generals also passed new regulations before the polls closed, giving them sweeping authority to maintain their grip on power. investors are reacting positively to another election this weekend. voters in greece put their support behind the party that favors bailouts and austerity measures to get the country's finances in order. the new government is expected to do all it can to keep greece in the euro zone. and world leaders are focusing on what's happening in greece at the g20 summit being held in mexico. and for the first time since he returned to power, russian pyeatt -- russian's president putin will be meeting with barack obama.

danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: the at the g20 summit in mexico the global economy is the main issue the election results in greece have members of the summit, breeding a sigh of relief. it is hoped the new greek government can keep that country's economy from triggering a larger european crisis. president obama, who arrived in mexico last night, is pushing the euro zone to take bolder action to continue stain its financial problems. >> the white house is concerned a european financial crisis would hurt the u.s. economy and president obama's chances for reelection. the president is meeting with your row leaders and sitting down with russian president putin. it is the first time the two men have met since putin reclaimed the russian presidency. the uprising in syria will likely be the most contentious issue.

the russian administration has been highly critical in russia. the government continued to attack its own people. other countries at the summit will also talk about syria, but the focus remains the economy. >> this meeting is coming at an absolutely critical time and we are waiting for europe to tell us what it is going to do. >> reporter: g20 leaders are hoping to lay down a financial framework at another meeting in europe. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. coming up on 9news at noon the child sexual abuse trial of jerry sandusky is entering a new phase. we'll have details when 9news now continues.

a published report says gary jeered dawn know has filed a lawsuit to collect on the death benefit following the 2011 disappearance of his travel partner, robin gardner. her body has never been found. she disappeared in aruba. the chicago sun times reports giordanno is suing the insurance company for $3.5 million as part of a travel insurance policy he took out before the trip. the defense is presenting its case in the jerry sandusky child sexual abuse trial. the former penn state assistant football coach maintains he is

innocent, and may even go on the witness stand to try and prove his innocence. manuel gallegos has more now, from pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky arrived at court to hear prosecutors wrap-up their case against him. prosecutors called their last witness this morning, the mother of one of sandusky's accusers. she testified she thought it would be a good idea for her son to spend time with sandusky, since she was a single mom, working two jobs. sandusky met most of his accusers through his charity for at risk children. the former penn state football coach denies he sexually abused young boys. now his lawyers will try to continue vince jurors he is telling the truth. they are expected to take a few days to present sandusky's side of the story. he reportedly spent the weekend preparing sandusky himself to take the stand. the defense is trying to show some of the accusers are making money down the road in civil

and on today's hero central, i'm saluting the arlington food assistance center, better known as ate back. >> i was, at one time, a wealthy man. due to circumstances, i am not anymore. without this, i would not have the sustenance to live well. >> reporter: wayne kent davis is 76 years old and retired. he can't buy enough groceries to last through the week. he gets supplemental groceries at the arlington food center. >> some people feel ashamed but i don't. the people don't make you feel ashamed, they make you feel welcome. >> reporter: the 20-year-old food pantry not only provides food to over 4000 qualified residents, but it also tries to give as much a choice of food as possible. >> strawberries are nice and about nan newcastle, and

especially meat. >> reporter: the arlington food assistance center gets 60% of its food from donations. the nonprofit provides fresh foods, eggs milk and chicken. >> families coming need a variety of volunteers. >> reporter: basically we have all ages, we even have family night that allows parents to bring in very young kids to do bagging of groceries for us. >> the volunteers say they feel good about helping out. >> i'm a gardener. i like to throw things and bring it down. it is a way of donating what i grow that i think is healthy for the people. the demand for food is growing because there has been a

perhaps the mid to upper 70s for highs late today. i think we'll see a couple of sunny breaks. 76 by 7:00 and still about 74 by 9:00 p.m. winds out of the southeast at 10 miles per hour. here's a wide look at the doppler radar over the past six hours. you can see the rain this morning as it came through the area. we did have thunderstorms off to our south and still do. check that out. coming in toward west virginia from ohio. locally we are walking the back edge of the rain. on live doppler this stuff is fairly light. the steadier rains south of fredericksburg. we will see fewer showers for the afternoon. i can't tell you it is going to be completely dry. temperatures our average high is 85. not there today but tomorrow and beyond. 66 right now in dc 70 in easton, they have had fewer showers,

still only 63 in winchester. fredericksburg. 66. at our michael and son weather camera, still cloudy skies, a little bit of sprinkles out there. the weekend out of the south at 6 and the humidity high at 78%. i want to show you the national temperatures. this tells you the story of the heat right here in the middle of the country. chicago going 100 this afternoon. to get all this heat here and it is going to be building toward us over the next couple of days. you can see this right here, there is the high pressure, the clouds the showers the storms riding north of it on the jet stream here into minnesota, wisconsin, michigan. this pushed the showers through us and may still have more showers and storms our way through the afternoon.

but it does look like the best chance of showers and storms are in the mountains. maybe the northern shenandoah valley. as we go into the evening hours, quieter tonight and then with the hate tomorrow, can't rule out that we are going to bubble up some more showers and storms, especially west. looking at the forecast, got the yellow alert today. we had all sorts of delays. may get one or two this afternoon. 77. tonight 60s, not too bad south 5 to 10ton. hotter, 88 with an isolated afternoon storm. by wednesday with the high heat, going back to a yellow alert, heat is going to be a real factor, not just wednesday, but thursday and friday. thursday 97, friday 94. isolated storms becoming a bit more widespread by friday and again on sunday. we are going to the kitchen next on 9news now at noon. stick around.
