>> right now, there's a rash of burglaries in one suburb. nearly 20 of them. police have just given us new information on a suspect. >> plus, topper's tracking big time heat on the way and maybe some storms. but first tonight, the pit bull problem gets political. we'll tell you why the fight over dangerous dogs is going to the politicians. >> some say they're vicious. others say they're man's best

friend. now the battle over pit bulls heads to the statehouse in annapolis. they'll decide what to do with the controversial ruling that rules pit bulls as dangerous. >> matt jablow spoke with man with a unique position on the issue. >> reporter: andre hawthorne knows a little bit about dangerous dogs. >> but mainly i was angry. >> reporter: he fought off two of them back in april after the dogs started attacking several children in andre's northeast washington neighborhood. the dogs were eventually found and euthanized while andre is still recovering from his injuries. >> i can't move these two fingers. >> reporter: and talking about the need for stricter regulation of certain breeds of dogs. >> these dogs would kill them kids. >> reporter: a repeat maryland court of appeals ruling pit bulls, quote, inherently dangerous, a ruling that would make it easier for victims of pit bull attacks to sue the dog's owners. a task force of the maryland

legislature will start reviewing the ruling tomorrow and perhaps even consider legislation to block it. >> reporter: some dogs need to be legally dangerous. >> reporter: which andre hawthorne thinks would be a very bad idea. >> the owner should be liable, and if the owner attacks the person. >> reporter: scott has a much different opinion. >> it's in the hands of the person, and any dog can be dangerous when placed in those hands. >> reporter: the vice-president of the humane society of washington, he says vicious dogs are usually the result of bad dog owners. >> i absolutely know it's not the breed. >> reporter: what's more, he's certain that pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. that for a number of reasons they should not be labeled as such. >> i know pit bulls that take care of orphaned kittens and they're scared of other dogs. >> reporter: maryland is believed to be the only state in the nation to legally consider pit bulls as dangerous. the ten-member task force is made up of members of both the state senate and the house

delegate. there's no sense of how long it will take the task force to complete its work. derek? >> thank you, matt. new information on a robbery thwarted by a guardian angel. it happened in northeast. the crook robbed a victim and was trying to get away, and that is when guardian angel dion king leapt into action. he saw what was going down, left his father's day meal behind, grabbed the bad guy and held him down until the cops got there. new tonight, police looking for someone they call a person of interest in what may be the first murder in dewey beach since the town was incorporated some 30 years ago. police did not have a name for this person of interest, nor have they released the name of the victim. it is a woman, a cleaning lady found the body this morning in a motel room at a place called the atlantic ocean side. a tourist named michael brown says he was staying in the room right next door. >> we never expected that to happen.

very odd for this town. it gets busy in the summertime, generally people are down here having fun. >> dewey beach police called in the delaware state police to lead this investigation. in a part of montgomery county, it's not just burglaries of homes, it's break- ins of those homes with the residents inside. 18 of them since early april. now police have a solid lead and are turning to the public for help. gary nurenberg is live in germantown with that. gary? >> reporter: we are near the intersection of matini and clopper in germantown. to give you an idea of how widespread the burglaries are, we're going to put up a list of where they have taken place since they first began on april 6th. there have been 18 of these since april 6, along with, as you can see. what is remarkable is there have been no confrontations so far between homeowners and the burglars. police want this solved before that changes.

bernard hill practices guitar monday night, plays in the group slightly serious. knows what's happening in his neighborhood is more serious than that. >> i've lived here approximately 15 years now, and i've had, you know, during these years people go through the ashtray in the car for change and, you know, just several incidents like that. >> reporter: it's what thieves have been finding as they rifle through neighbor's cars that's making their lives easier, homeowners lives harder. >> in some cases they've left car doors unlocked. there's been a spare key to the vehicle or to the house or in some cases a garage door opener. >> allowing burglars to more easily enter the homes. one neighborhood captured these images of a suspect trying to break into a home on may 23rd. police believe that man is responsible for some, if not all of the burglaries that began in april and continued through sunday night.

and on wheat ridge sunday night. >> i was woken up by the car alarm going off at 5:00 in the morning. we came out. i didn't see anything. but it's very unusual for the alarm to go off that earlyin the middle of the night. >> do you think somebody was breaking into the car? >> definitely. >> police say you can avoid being victimized. >> remove all items of value from your car at night. make sure you don't keep spare keys or garage door openers in the car and lock your doors at night. >> car phones, cell phones, gps,easily disposed of on craig's list. no confrontations of homeowners. >> i do have personal protection, yes. >> which means this this could have a violent turn. police hope with the photograph someone will call and say i know who that guy is. if you're that person, police want to hear from you. >> good tips from the police for all of us no matter where we live. former major league pitcher

roger clemens found not guilty of lying to congress. he was accused of perjury when he testified before congress back in 2008 saying under oath he never used performance enhancing drug steroids. today the jury cleared him on each and every count. and after the verdict, clemens spoke to the press. >> and really, all you media guys that know me and followed my career, [ applause and cheers ] i put a lot of hard work into that career. >> this was the government's second attempt to convict clemens. in the first trial the judge declared a mistrial after prosecutors showed the jury evidence the judge had declared inadmissible to court. he was president obama's top choice to be our ambassador to iraq, but instead he has removed himself from consideration for the job in the wake of a scandal involving

what some are calling an inappropriate relationship with a journalist in baghdad. according to reports, he had an affair with wall street journal reporter gina chon. the two are now married. president obama and other world leaders are in mexico tonight for the g-20 summit. the economy clearly the number one issue. but putin and he are trying to come to an agreement about what to do with the chaos in syria. >> we agree we need to see a cessation of the violence, that a political process has to be created to prevent civil war. >> back to the economy, sunday's election of a pro bailout government in greece has averted immediate disaster but spain and italy are in serious debt and threatening to throw the entire continent into chaos. closing arguments in the jerry sandusky trial could begin as soon as thursday, according to the judge

presiding in the case. testimony ended early today because of technical issues involving witnesses, but before that, friends and family of the former penn state assistant football coach testified on his behalf. sandusky is accused of molesting at least ten boys over a 15-year period. a canadian porn actor accused of killing and dismembering a college student in montreal is due in court tomorrow. he is 29-year-old luca magnata. he was arrested in germany and flown back to canada today. he faces charges in the killing of a university student from china. a few weeks back we told you about your tax dollars at work at the metropolitan airport authority, the folks that run dulles and national. remember how they had an incredible knack for spending your money, like $9,200 for a plane ticket and $4,800 for a few surf and turf dinners at a conference in hawaii. maybe it got you riled up.

it definitely got congressman frank wolf tomorrow and tomorrow he will introduce a bill to create a permanent oversight of the airport's board and how it spends taxpayer money. >> things were done that should not have been done. travel was done that should not have been done. actions were done that should not have been done. meetings were done and closed sessions, private sessions. >> last week, virginia's governor, bob mcdonnell booted board member citing his $9,200 plane ticket and other expenses. now metaire is suing. it was much nicer because you could get on the train and there were lots of seats. >> it was probably as crowded. >> really? even though they added trains? >> it was just as crowded for me. >> we got mixed reviews from commuters tonight on the first day of metro's rush plus. the plan is to improve service on the green, yellow and orange lines by adding six trains to each of the 21 stations during

rush hour. 110,000 people are expected to benefit from the service adjustment. 16,000 blue line riders could be negatively affected. recordings unveiled today of jail house phone calls between george zimmerman and his wife. prosecutors say the couple were talking about the money, more than $100,000 raised for his defense. they used codes to describe the amounts. >> in my account? do i have at least $100? how close am i? >> 8 dollars. >> total, everything, how much are we looking at? >> like $155. >> okay. >> zimmerman was released on $150,000 in bond in april several days after the calls took place at his bond hearing. his wife, shelly, testified that the couple was broke. she is now facing perjury charges and zimmerman's bail was revoked. still ahead on 9 news

mike tyson hits broadway. the former heavyweight champion is premiering his one-man show this summer. it's 90 minutes long directed by spike lee and focuses on the highs and lows of the boxing champ's life. earlier this year, tyson performed a mike tyson undisputed truth in vegas, the broadway show will run for six nights only starting at the end of july. a big announcement from an apple competitor. microsoft unveiling a brand- newtablet hoping to give the ipad a run for its money. >> a report from hollywood. >> reporter: take a look at the

new tablet called surface. an ultra thin, a detachable keyboard doubles as a cover and snaps into place. >> mike soft did something -- microsoft got into the hardware business building something that's almost a pc. >> it runs on the new operating system, windows 8. it boasts the best wi-fi connection of any tablet on the market. users can search the web while on the go. >> i think people expected either a tablet or a pc. i don't think people expected them to pull the two categories together as well as they seem to have done. >> the new surface is only about 9 millimeters thin, weighs less than a pound and a half and depending on which version you buy can absorb between 32 and 128 gigabytes. this is the first time in microsoft's 37-year history it's offering a computer of its own. the goal is to take a bite out of apple. it was 3 years ago the trendy tech giant unveiled the new

ipad. >> we are redefining the category that apple created. >> apple created the market on what it calls pc devices including the iphone and ipod touch. more than 172 million were sold last year alone, helping to make apple the most valuable company in the world. microsoft hopes to change the playing field with the release of surface, but with a price still to be determined, it's unclear how the cost of its new tablet will compare to apple's new ipad. cbs news, hollywood. >> and microsoft expects to release surface when windows 8 hits the market in the fall. yesterday, it was a day we set aside to honor our dads. perhaps buy them dinner, a big tv if they're lucky, coloan and a bad -- cologne and a bad tie if they're not. >> i was 16 years old when i decided to be a journalist and 17 when the whole idea started looking more than a little scary.

people started warning me that the business was really competitive and i was worried. maybe i couldn't even get a job doing this. but when i told my pops about my fears, he said something amazing. he said you know what? you're absolutely right. you might not make it, but you have to try. and then he went even further. he said if you told me you wanted to make your living playing your base guitar, then i would tell you that's what you should try to do, which was all the more shocking since he'd actually heard me play my bass guitar. if it doesn't work out, he shrugged, you'll find something else to do. wow. it was, as i think of it now, permission to fail, which in a way is permission to try something hard. now, a lot of parents love the idea of their kids following their dreams. that's so long as there's only a minimal risk of those dreams falling short. how are you going to make a living as an actor, they say, or as a fashion designer or as a rapper? my dad said your dreams, your

8. that's what's kept us cooler and cloudy. pressure, a 30.11 inches of mercury and it is on the way up. here's the deal. it's going to be warmer tomorrow, but tomorrow does not begin the heat wave. that would be wednesday. tomorrow actually will be seasonable with temps back in the 80s. maybe an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon. any time we get heat and warmth and instability, any storms that develop can be heavy. we'll keep you posted on that. muggy tomorrow night. you can probably leave your windows up tonight. probably not so tomorrow night. hot and humid by mid-week. certainly hot. not extremely humid, but pretty darn hot by wednesday and thursday. overnight we'll say mostly cloudy. still comfortable. lows in the 60s. winds out of the southeast at 10. temperatures 60s and 70s in the morning. then by afternoon, partly cloudy and warmer. isolated thunderstorm possible at 84 to 88.

winds beginning to turn now south/southeast at 10. they'll keep turning as we go through wednesday and thursday, eventually become westerly which is a pretty hot wind for us. we'll break it down. 62 to 70 to start. by noon, very nice. walk to lunch, then by evening, 84 to 88. just an isolated thunderstorm. 9 weather alert code is going to go like this. green, yellow, yellow. 87 tomorrow. thursday, raised to 97 also with thunderstorms. the next seven days, it stays around 90 on friday, but right now it appears just 2, 2 and a half days of really pretty serious heat. we're still around 90 on friday. more storms will keep saturday dry. sunday perhaps a thunderstorm late or overnight. low 90s. a little cooler on monday with highs back into the upper mid- 80s. >> heat wave. >> we've got a heat wave. we have tickets to give away to the at&t nationals next week.

looking back, there just wasn't much the nationals could do this weekend to stop new york. the yankees are so hot right now. on a nine-game win streak, there's no stopping them. the good news is the nationals

didn't lose any ground in the standings. they're still in first place. four games ahead of the next team. and besides the yanks, the nats have dominated inner league play sweeping both boston and toronto. up next, tampa bay, another tough squad. the nats are ready to put the yanks series behind them. >> i thought we played pretty well, you know. some things that went our way a little bit, and you know, just got to take the good with the bad and try to improve and try to win some ballgames this coming week. >> now, like i said, the yankees unstoppable. their new victim, atlanta. derek jeter drove in runs tonight. all of those wins have been against national league teams with winning records. they are looking good. the baltimore orioles trying to stop this guy, r.a.

dickey, the knuckleballer. what an arm. he pitched a complete game tonight, striking out 13 batters, a career high. looking, swinging every which way. he becomes the first major leaguer in 24 years to pitch consecutive one-hit games. redskins have five weeks until training camp. they're spending some time teaching the youngsters a thing or two about the game. terrence austin held a second annual football camp in st. stephens and st. agnes. he said the response was so overwhelming after last year he couldn't wait to do it again. sometimes it's hard to tell whether a player is out to win a game or to win an oscar. we've seen it in soccer. a player acts injured, gets his opponent a red card, then comes back into play. we've also seen some of the best and worst acting on the hardwood. most recently, game three of the nba finals last night. commissioner david stern is fed up with it. they call it slopping, when players exaggerate being hit in

hopes that a referee will call a foul. some are totally obvious. others actually deserve some properties. they kind of sold it pretty well. either way the players are tricking the referees instead of just playing the game the right way. see, some are pretty bad. commissioner and a competition committee looking for ways to punish players that flop. they go back and review the game tape and penalize a player. >> that's a clown idea, bro. >> very nice. very nice. we'll be right back.
