8:00 p.m. if you combine the air temperature with the relative humidity, the heat index should be 105-109. i'm not sure we're going to meet the criteria. temps are going to be in the upper 90s. if we make it to 109, we'll see. either way, drink lots and lots of fluids. water. that sort of thing. it's still 80 downtown. it's still 77 in leesburg. we've been spoiled as of late with low temperatures in the 50s and 60s. not really the case tonight. it's going to be muggy across the entire metro area. we'll come back and tell you if any record highs may fall tomorrow. we'll also talk about which is going to be hotter of the next thee days. it may not be -- three days. it may not be tomorrow. the heat has organizations making adjustments. crews will start collecting trash and recycling at 6:00 am for the rest of the week. that's trying to keep people inside for the rest of the day.

and passengers on the brunswick and camden lines can expect lines to run more slowly as heat takes effect. tonight a special tax force on pit bulls in the state of maryland is mulling over the fate of the breed. a ruling by maryland's highest court last month called the breed inherently dangerous and now the task force is trying to figure out if the ruling ought to stand. if it does, landlords could be held libel for tenants who own pit bulls. >> they have the ability to evict us based on what our dog looks like. >> i'm thinking i hope we buy the house before it comes to that. >> this is like a shark attack. we can all agree on that. we can all agree it makes if you have a bad dog. but not all dogs will have the same damage. >> her son dominic was nearly killed by a pit bull back in 2007. animal shelters are saying in the midst of all of the debate, they're finding more and more owners giving up their pets and they're having a tougher time

finding homes for pit bulls. well, despite all of the attention focused on pit bulls over the years, there is so much that most people just don't know about them. and that includes us. we found that out firsthand last night when you, our viewers, called us out on some of what we reported about pit bulls. so we asked our matt jablow to play pit bull fact or fiction with a man who knows quite a bit about the breed. >> i have plenty of pit bulls that are wonderful companion animals. >> reporter: scott is not objective of about pit bulls and pit bull mixes. >> i have been doing this for over 20 years. >> reporter: vice president of the washington humane society, he believes the dogs have gotten a very bad rap over the years. >> good girl. >> reporter: but even though he's not entirely objective, he is extremely knowledgeable about the breed. >> i know plenty of pit bulls that go to dog parks and have a great time. >> reporter: so he seemed like a good person to play pit pull fact or fiction. first statement, pit bulls are inherently dangerous as the maryland court of appeals

recently dangerous. >> fiction. it's all in the up bringing, the socialization and how their owners are. >> reporter: second statement, pit bulls have locking jaws that make it virtually impossible to separate a pit bull from people or animals they bite. >> that's fiction. there is no scientific data to back that up. they've studied it and found the pit bull skull is no different than any other dog. there is no locking mechanism. >> reporter: how about pit bulls are unpredictable and more likely to bite people than other dogs. >> that is also fiction. they are not unpredictsable. in fact, any dog before they do bite gives warning signs. >> reporter: and finally, pit bulls are good with children. >> that's fact. they were once considered the nanny dog where people would leave their infants alone with pit bulls. and then you look at the little rascals. pety was a pit bull and he never attacked alfalfa or any of the little rascals. >> reporter: speaking of pety, did you know he's believed he's buried at the aspen hill

memorial pet cemetery in silver spring. that is a fact. >> always loved pety. thanks, matt. karen tolls is due in court tomorrow. she is facing a charge of reckless driving. you remember her. she was spotted speeding more than 100 miles an hour in the beltway back in february driving a county car. if convicted, she faces a hefty fine and she could be on the way to losing her license. anita. new at 11:00, the pentagon investigation reportedly recommends as many as 7 u.s. troops face charges for burning koran last february. word of the burning has caused deadly protests. one navy service members and six army soldiers could lead to a letter of reprimand and docking of pay. one of the allies in the middle east is in complete turmoil tonight. it's leadership, it's form of government, its very stability in question.

egypt where thousands return to the symbolic square of last year's arab spring to protest what may turn out to be a military cue. to add to the tension, there are conflicting reports about whether former egyptian president has died of a stroke. gary nurenberg is here to piece all of this together. >> reporter: well, anita, there is a lot going on. but imagine holding a presidential election and then having the military say it doesn't matter. we're in charge. that's what brought the crowds out today. that is what makes egypt's future so genuinely uncertain. with the results of the weekend election in dispute, these supporters of the brotherhood candidate returned to the scare to detest the dissolving of parliament. >> we're fighting for a clean society in egypt. >> reporter: the leadership of the muslim brotherhood says it does not want a confrontation with the military, but it's followers are demanding the military give up power.

remember, it was military officers who assassinated sa dodd in 1981 propelling career military officer babarack to power. he was a strong authoritarian who held power. he was forced from office in the arab spring up rising last year and was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month for failing to stop the killing of demonstrators. and as anita reported, there were conflicting reports about whether a stroke had killed him. at one point he was reported clinically dead. it would seem at the least tonight he is near death. but hard facts are hard to come by. what is clear is that egypt's immediate future is very unclear. derek. >> thank you, gary. well, the southern baptist convention has elected its first ever african-american leader. he is fred lewder junior of new orleans. analysts suggest that today's move is at least in part aimed

at helping the denomination expand its appeal but hide beyond its traditional white southern base. new information at the turmoil at the university of virginia. late today the university vice rector resign. today governor bob mcdonald stepped into this. he told reporters on a conference call he wishes they handled the departure a bit differently. they're reporting that sullivan will be on sabbatical next year. she will be paid her base salary over that time, but she will not be allowed to speak publicly about the visitors or the university. tomorrow the defense is expected to wrab up its case of -- wrap up its case against jerry sandusky. he is charged with sexually abusing 10 young boys. today the defense called to the stand sandusky's wife dotty.

she testified she never saw her husband do anything improper with the boys who sometimes stayed at her house. several alleged victims testified he raped them in the basement. an apparent impact on capitol hill could end up with attorney general be held in contempt of congress. the chair of the house oversite government reform committee wands holder to turn over documents about operation fast and furious. that was the gun smuggling operation that went wrong and landed weapons in the hands of mexican drug cartels. >> our position is give us the documents. their position is they would like to give us a briefing and then documents supporting their assertion that essentially there was no wrongdoing and then bring it to a close. >> i think the ball is in their court. they rejected what i thought was an extraordinary offer on our part. >> well, congressman ice has given the attorney general until tomorrow to get lawmakers those documents. tonight president obama and fellow leaders of the world's largest economies have wrapped

up a two-day meeting in mexico. they're trying to get the financial crisis rocking europe from spreading. but they're leaving the summit without announcing any definitive plan of attack. >> over the last two days, european leaders here have made it clear that they understand the stakes and they pledged to take the action needed to address this crisis and restore confidence, stability and growth. >> european leaders are scheduled to have a summit of their own at the end of this month. republican presidential candidate mitt romney says he is considering florida senator mark rubeo as a running mate. the reports cited unnamed advisors who maintained he was not being considered for a spot on the gop ticket. the civil war's battle of the wilderness lasted three days. the battle over wal-mart, that one lasted three years.

but today wal-mart finally broke ground over a new super center in orange county virginia. now, the discount retailer scoped out a site near the battle of the wilderness. so the store is going up at a site several miles away from the battlefield. well, still ahead tonight, if you want to catch a blue colored lobsters, the odds say you have to real in two million of them before you see one of them. or you can see one on 9 news, and we'll tell you where they found it. plus we'll tell you to the new babes bash to show you how the local broadcasters joined forces for charity. you're going to see some familiar faces. that's coming up. also ahead, harry read goes bryce harper. we'll show you how he turned congress into a comic relief coming up.

a commuter alert. the bay bridge will be shut down tomorrow for a short time. as it stands now, crews will close the bridge at 1:15 in the afternoon and keep it closed for about 40 minutes. here is the deal. giant cargo cranes are going to be passing underneath and the state traps department was

worried -- transportation department was worried people would gawk and cause an accident on the bridge. they're going to close the bridge for 40 minutes. the university of maryland says it's making progress in helping save the chesapeake bay's oyster population. today we were taken on a tour of the oyster hatchery. it's the largest facility of its kind on the east coast, and right now it's on track to produce a record number of baby oysters. >> we want clean water, healthy water, healthy seafood. we need a lot more oysters out there. >> the oyster population was decimated by disease back in the 1980s and has struggles to recover. the university is bringing fertilized eggs into huge tanks where they're cultivated with home grown algae. then they're released back in the bay to attach to old oyster shells. by now you've heard about rice harper's response to a question he wasn't thrilled about last week. but you really don't know you've made it in this town until

you've been quoted on capitol hill. >> i don't want to answer that question. that's a time question. [ laughing ] >> oh, man. that's when senate majority leader harry read after his response and a question about immigration reform. as you may know, he used that same response last week when he was asked if the 19-year-old would be drinking alcohol during the natt's swing through canada where the drinking age is 19. a review of race time. the maryland racing commission says they ran the preakness in record time back in 1973. the horse's former owner had asked them to review tapes of the race thinking they got it wrong and cheated the horse out of the time. after taking a look at the tapes enhanced by digital technology, the commission agreed. not one, but two rare finds off the east coast in the last week. first we get to massachusetts where restaurant workers found

not one but five rare orange lobsters in their most recent shipment from maine. at first they thought somebody had maybe slipped an already cooked lobster into the shipment. but then the lobster moved. now, the orange coloring is attributed to some kind of genetic deformity. but even rarer than those orange ones is a blue one. and that is exactly what turned up in ocean city late last week. just one in every 2 million lobsters are blue. the odds of a yellow lobster are one and 30 million. a calico lobster, one with an orange and black shell, gets you about the same odds. and the rarest lobster of all, one with no color. the albino. scary looking lobster. one in every 100 million times. of course if there is radiation or something, who knows. >> but do they taste good? >> i don't think --. >> that's all i want to know. >> we do not have a sample to know. let's start with the live look outside. live weather cam brought to you by mike will and son. high was 88. -- michael and son. high was 88. dew points in the 70s. we talked about this earlier. when the dew points are in the 70s, things just aren't comfortable. you need the ac. you really cannot open up the windows. pressure rising a little bit. here is the deal, the air quality is unhealthy tomorrow. code orange. very hot wednesday and thursday. in fact, i think thursday will be hotter of the two. a slow down if you have to work outside and stay hydrated. water is probably your best bet. thursday's record 98 hit back in 1988, that actually is in jeopardy. record high tomorrow is 99. that is probably safe. so overnight looks like this. clear to partly cloudy. muggy. 66-74. so downtown we're talking mid 70s. that's it. now, tomorrow morning, mostly sunny. very warm. very quickly. air quality, again, orange. unhealthy. temperatures in the 70s and 80s. and some folks will probably touch 90 by lunch time.

so the heat is on. keep your shades closed. your curtains drawn. especially the west side facing of the house. that will keep your house a little cooler. exercise in the morning or in doors. you don't want to exercise in the evening. the air quality is the worst and it's almost the hottest time of the day. wear light colored clothing and check on the elderly. by afternoon, mostly sunny and hot. a few storms possible. high temperatures around 95 and winds turn out of the southwest at about 10. record high tomorrow at dulles. that is actually in jeopardy. we might tie that. but the 99 downtown and the 100 in baltimore both set in 1931, that is probably safe. all right. well, we've got unhealthy air, so you need to carpool or use public transit. if you have a respiratory problem, stay indoors. refuel the cars in the evening. don't cut the gas. no power equipment. leave the lawn alone. bushes alone. do not use a charcoal grill. that is not good for the

environment. high temps tomorrow, this may be a little overdone. 95 downtown. maybe 96 in gaithersburg. 96 in leesburg. 98 in manassas and 96 down towards fredericksburg. so your day planner looks like this. 66-76 to start. so warm right off the bat. hot by lunch time. 88-93. the 92-96 by evening. a slight chance, a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the evening. next three days, our 9 weather alert codes are yellow, yellow and yellow. they have to be. heat advisory tomorrow 95. a heat advisory again on thursday. on friday 91. that's better news. a better chance of showers and thunderstorms. next seven days, really good news here. temps go down. maybe a morning shower on saturday. and that is really just about it. upper 80s to near 90. maybe a passing shower on sunday. upper 80s. we can handle that. a better chance for showers and storms on monday as the cold front pushes through, and that will allow temperatures to fall to only 80.

glove of the pitcher. his glove was confiscated. he heard a rumor that he used a pine tar like substance on his glove. and mcgee came in, retired the side. johnson addressed the ejection afterwards. he is a former national saying he heard a rumor about the pine tar. >> i didn't just make it up. [ laughing ] >> or dream it up. he pitched here. you know, i don't think it's a secret. >> orioles, mets new york having no problem at the plate tonight. lucas goes yard for a 2-run shot. santana on the mound for the mets. new york blanks the birds for a second straight night. the nba draft is next week. the 28th. the wizards who have the third overall pick has spent the last several days working out potential players.
