around town, things are looking pretty good for a wednesday morning. no problems to report on the beltway and inside the beltway on the bw parkway and route 50 through cheverly you're doing just fine all the way into the northeast corridor. all the potomac and anacostia crossings are fine as well. first of all, we'll show what you it looks like on the southbound side of i-95 here at route 32. looking good. nice and light between the baltimore beltway and college park. back over to the maps. this time we'll head over to the other side of town coming in from dulles airport on the actual road or 66 out of manassas. travel lanes are all open and things are nice and light as you head for the beltway. this little red piece right here was overnight construction between 66 and route 7 on the northbound side. hopefully that should clear up if you're just now heading out the door. a live look on the northbound side of i-95. things are beginning to build here but still the lanes are open. coming up in my next report, let's go over to the north side of town at 5:09. back to you. >> thank you, monika. overnight there have been report that's jip then state --

that egyptian state television would soon issue a report on the health of hosni mubarak. >> as you may remember, the 84- year-old was forced out in last year's antigovernment uprising after ruling egypt for three decades. 9 news now reporter delia goncalves is following the latest reports. she's in our satellite center joining us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. lots of conflicting reports coming out of egypt this morning. even last night. last night there were false reports that the ousted egyptian president was dead. however, we now know hosni mubarak is still alive yet he is in a coma. still the rumors of his death sparked celebration in cairo's square last night. after ruling the country for 30 years, 84-year-old mubarak was forced out of office during last year's arab spring. he's been in prison since june for failing to stop the

killings of hundreds of protesters. mubarak reportedly suffered a stroke in jail and was moved to a military hospital where supporters gathered last night. doctors at that hospital used a fibrillator to restart his heart and he's now reportedly on life support. many protesters fear military officers are just showing their old boss favoritism and that his sickness is just a coverup to distract voters from the ongoing political unrest in the country. the fight to choose mubarak's successor is coming up at 5:30. mike, andrea, back to you. >> deal well that update. the manual suspected in the first murder case in due wie beach history has killed himself. a woman's body was found monday morning at the atlantic oceanside motel. she had been stabbed death. police found suspect pawan kumar dead at a hotel in new

jersey. he's believed he committed suicide by overdosing on drugs. the stabbing victim has been identified as dn yell mehlman. the controversy over pit bulls in maryland continues. lawmakers are considering whether to adhere to or change a court ruling about those dogs through some legislation. the parents of dominick selesky testified before a panel tuesday. he suffered a near fatal dog attack in 2007. the case went to maryland's highest court and that's where judges ruled that the pit bull breed is inherently dangerous. that designation could lead to tenants liable. more and more people are giving up their pit bulls. protesters at the university of virginia have gotten one of the heads they have been demanding. the board of visitors

markington resigned late yesterday. the resignation came after the board named the interim president. he's the dean of uva school of commerce. it's been just over a week when the president teresa sullivan was resigned. demonstrators want the board director to resign. it's 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. jessica doyle is off today. here are today's headlines. perhaps european investors are just not as optimistic as their counterparts in asia. most of the major asian exchanges posting gains overnight including a 1.2% jump for japan's nick kay in-- nikkei index. here at home the dow jumped 95 points yesterday. the nasdaq gained 34. the s&p 500 climbed 13 points. today's trading could hinge on

the monthly interest rate announcement from the federal reserve which is due out this afternoon. brighter days could be on the horizon for home builders. a new report finds building permits climbed by 7.9% last month. those are the strongest numbers since september 2008. the report mirrors figures from the national association of home builders. despite the trend, the housing market is still struggling with weak home prices and a recent uptick in foreclosures. if you're taking your first sip of coffee and it still doesn't taste quite right, your brand may have changed its formula. agriculture research suggests most major coffee brands are switching up blends to deal with price increases. companies are substituting expensive beans with cheaper options. that means your favorite blend might now contain a mix of high and low quality beans. coffee purists like mike might be outraged but without the change, you could be paying a

testimony in the jerry sandusky child sex abuse trial. the defendant is expected to take the stand. yesterday sandusky's wife dottie was on the stand. she told jurors she never heard any of the young men who visited her home yelling for help and she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior. a pentagon investigation reportedly recommends its administrative punishment but no criminal charges for american service members who burn qurans. they sparked deadly protests. the southern baptist church has elected its first african- american leader. the membership has been declining in recent years and it's believed this move could expand the denomination's appeal beyond its traditional white southern base. this is a beauty regiment once dominated by women be but more -- women, but more men are seeking out hair removal alternatives to shaving.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. our time is 5:14. we're already bracing ourselves for what's ahead in terms of temperatures. hot, hot, and hot. >> sizzling. the stickiness is back. the muggies big time. the heat, the humidity. it's going to push heat index values over 100 degrees. >> that's what we don't like to hear. the. >> heat inn dex 105 -- index 105 before the afternoon is out. hope your air conditioner is working. >> my broke on the way home. >> we'll take care of you. maybe a block of ice around your neck will help. we'll talk about the heat advisory. goes into effect at noon. lasts till 10:00 tonight. for everybody in orange going over toward the eastern shore, higher elevations out west, you get away from the high heat but it's still going to be plenty warm nonetheless. lots of sunshine. a slight chance of an afternoon storm.

i'm thinking rain chances less than 20%. don't count on t. winds generally northwest or southwest 5, 8 miles an hour. we're not going to have a lot of wind. tonight the winds will be near calm again so another very sticky night ahead. with the light wind, the high humidity, we do have a little bit of fog to tell you about out in warrenton, culpeper. stafford three-quarters. cumberland this morning your visibilities have dropped to a half mile. the rest of us dealing with hazy conditions out there. a sticky morning. 72, a very popular number from rockville to bethesda over toward college park and columbia. out to the west in fairfax and leesburg. everybody, those folks anyway 72. a few spots in the upper 60s in prince william county, fort belvoir and here in washington. we've got haze out there. 75 degrees. a dew point at 70. that is tropical type of stickiness. humidity at 84%. a very light south, southwesterly wind. heat covers much of the country from the southwest all the way to maine where we've got heat advisories also in effect

today. the jet stream well to the north with big storms again from the northern plains to the northern mississippi valley. those folks are just stuck under the jet. so day after day they've been seeing the severe weather and the heat built in overnight really. that warm air mass. it's going to heat up big time today. you'll notice not much except maybe a stray storm, one or two spots. i expect a mostly hot, sticky, day. quiet night. tomorrow another very hot day with some isolated afternoon storms possible. looks like the best chance of storms really is going to be on friday as a front approaches, more widespread showers and storms. that means cooler temperatures also. so the high heat really today and tomorrow. looking at the next three days, we've got yellow alerts up all three days. this sort of high heat you've really got to take seriously today and tomorrow. stray storm. 97 today. 98 tomorrow. we'll get close to some records today and tomorrow as well. more on that coming up during the 5:45 weather. 91 on friday with more storms.

so that's the cooling trend. by saturday we're in the upper 80s. same story sunday. maybe a few more storms on monday. 5:16. i've got to toss it over to monika samtani. she'll let you know if we have any other issues traffic wise. we do. we're getting word of an accident on the northbound side of i-95 after route 234 in dumfries. no lane information given yet, but just be aware that there could be an accident there and authorities are headed out there to check it out. north of that point dale city into woodbridge you'll be okay. no problems in springfield. we'll take a live look at 395 here at the 14th street bridge. you can see sunrise on the horizon. things are looking good. no problems across the 14th street bridge as you head into downtown. back over to the maps this time to the west side of town. no problems across the american legion bridge. we're fine on the dulles toll road and 66. we'll take a live look on the inbound side of i-66 where the lanes are open. in in man sas as you -- manassas as you head for centreville and the beltway.

neighborhood whether you want to be there or not. noon to 10:00 p.m., that's the heat advisory. everybody in the orange counties, eastern shore not in it. also in the mountains and parts of the valley here. but boy, it is going to be a scorcher after day there as well. right now we've got 69 in la plata. a few spots like martinsburg and frederick and cumberland have dipped into the 60s. a little fog also cumberland and stafford and warrenton and culpeper. temps this afternoon as i step out of the way, mid- to upper 90s. monika samtani, 5:30, good morning. >> good morning. there is police activity in the downtown area, 17th and r street northwest. i'm being told you may find some road closures. this is the major thoroughfare 17th street. be aware of that and i'll keep you posted on that situation. if you're headed downtown using route 50, no problems to report as you head through cheverly into the northeast corridor a. bit slow new york avenue, bladensburg road. that's just the usual delays. outside live right now, if

you're planning to head here, river road and falls road in the heart of potomac, no problems to report through the village. you're looking fine as you head inbound toward d.c. as well. this time we'll head all the way to the north side of town. 270 southbound out of frederick, still no big delays to report into clarksburg and a live look on the other side here at the american legion bridge. west side still looking good. coming up in my next report, we'll keep you posted on a couple of situations at 5:39. back to you. d.c. mayor vincent gray is defending a proposed appointee who came under fire for what happened at his last job. >> the mayor has nominated michael kelly to head the city's housing department. but kelly is leaving a similar post in philadelphia in the midst of controversy. he resigned after employees complained he was having an improper sexual relationship with a staffer. kelly put the woman in the senior staff position and approved her pay raises. >> i worked closely with a

nationally respected professional. >> gray said hudd investigated the allegations against kelly in philadelphia and cleared him of any wrongdoing. his nomination should still be confirmed by the d.c. city council. there are reports that former egyptian president hosni mubarak is on life support. he was ousted last year after three decades in power in one of the successful arab spring prodemocracy movements. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is following the developments. conflicting reports keep coming out. what do we know now? >> reporter: the latest so far after rumor he was dead last night, the latest this morning is that mubarak is indeed alive but we're told he's in critical condition after suffering a stroke in his prison cell. he was moved from his prison hospital to a military hospital we're told for better care, but a lot of protesters there in the country say the move and the reported illness is all part of a plot to distract voters from the ongoing election dispute in egypt.

you see, after sunday's race, both candidates have claimed victory. a leader in the muslim brotherhood movement and mubarak's former prime minister. the brotherhood has said it does not want conflict with the ruling military leaders but supporters of the movement took it to the square to protest the continued military control. >> the concern ask that the situation is extremely murky now, even many egyptians don't understand it. >> reporter: we're told doctors at that military hospital used a defibrillator to restart the former president's heart several times. and that could have led to the rumor that he was clinically dead. however, we have confirmed those rumors were false. he is in critical condition and as you said, mike, on life support as well in that military hospital. coming up at 6:00, we'll talk more about mubarak's rise to power and his three decade reign over egypt. back to you, mike. >> thanks, delia. today all u.s. and state

flags will be flown at half staff in maryland. governor martin o'malley ordered those flags lowered in memory of sergeant julian chase from edgewater. the 22-year-old marine died in afghanistan last month while fighting in operation enduring freedom. the last of the three teenagers who allegedly introinto a home in -- broke into a home in stafford, village turned himself in. they held a couple at knife point. the homeowner say the teens were high on drugs and threatened to set the house on fire with them inside. that's when police say the husband grab add knife and stabbed to of the robbers. the teens ran out of the house. the couple ran to neighbors for help. police found one suspect nearby. a second teen was arrested at the hospital. prince george's county county council member karen toles is due in court later this afternoon. toles is facing a charge of reckless driving. police say an officer spotted her going more than a hundred miles an hour on the beltway in february while driving a county-

heat-related speed restrictions take effect. you may have heard a blue lobster was caught last week near ocean city, maryland. now another rare lobster find has surfaced in massachusetts. restaurant workers found not one but five orange lobsters in their most recent shipment from maine. at first they thought somebody slipped an already cooked lobster into the shipment as a joke but then it moved. the orange coloring is attributed to a genetic deformity. orange lobsters might be as rare as one in 30 million and there they had five of them. that's amazing. still ahead, the founder of wikileaks taking what some are calling a desperate measure to avoid being extra divided to sweden. mitt romney contradicts reports about one of the politicians who had suggested as a possible number two on the republican presidential ticket. celebrity birthday time. let's see who's celebrating

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. we've been trying to propose you for the heat that's coming your way. >> if you're going to exercise, do it very early. if you can handle-- >> what is it now? >> 75. >> it's really sticky. the air is very thick and humid and heavy is a good term. you're just going to be dripping or maybe just do it inside on the treadmill which i know is not a good answer for a

lot of folks but maybe a safer answer when we've got weather like n. it's not just the heat and humidity but air quality is somewhat of an issue. code orange, unhealthy for sensitive groups. anything you can do to reduce pollute assistants will help, -- pollutants will help, like using public transit. don't idle. fuel the car up in the evening. do it in -- doing it in the afternoon adds to the pollution levels. your grass, leave it alone. it will be stressed anyway from the heat so don't bother to cut it the next few days. charcoal grills are a no no as well because they also have a lot of pollutants that get released. this would be the same even if we were code red. as far as the day planner, sunshine all day long. an isolated storm might happen in one area. i mean, it's just about a 10%, 20% chance. 95 by 1:00. northwesterly winds 5, 8 miles an hour. become westerly later on with a high in the mid- to upper 90s

in anacostia if you're planning to head over to 17th street, it's basically blocked off right now i'm going to say between q street and minnesota avenue. so be aware of that police barricade and a lot of activity in that area. if you need to get to nailer road you'll be okay. otherwise take good hope road around that to get around that situation. again, i'm going to say that 17th street is closed between q and minnesota with some pretty major police activity. the bw parkway, route 50, both of those corridors look great into the northeast area. no problems to report on this side of things of d.c. let's take you over to a live picture right now. if you're planning to head here to the northbound side of 395 across the 14th street bridge, you're looking final. by the way, 295 -- looking fine. by the way, 295 is not affected by this police activity. back over to our maps and this time we'll head to the south side of town. no problems on 95 northbound as you head up from dale city into woodbridge and springfield. a live look in springfield.

day today so you really need to take it easy, stay hydrated, stay cool because temperatures are quickly going to rise to the low 80s by 9:00. by lunch time we're talking low 90s in many areas, maybe even approaching the mid-90s in a couple of spots. then this afternoon other than an isolated stray storm, most of us won't see it. high temperatures mid- to upper 90s. mike and andrea? >> thank you, howard. the chesapeake bay oyster is a regional favorite and it was almost to extinction. >> the largest hatchery on the east coast is on track to produce a record number of baby oysters. kristin fisher takes us on a tour of the university of maryland's oyster hatchery in cambridge. >> we want clean water, healthy water, healthy seafood. we need a lot more oysters out there. >> reporter: he has made it his life's mission to help restore the oyster population in the chesapeake bay. right now? >> the population are decimated. >> reporter: but slowly year by

year he and his team at the horn point oyster hatchery are trying to change that it's part of the state's oyster restoration program. >> we're trying to help mother nature get back to some level of population that we can start turning the corner and the oysters will help themselves repopulate. the sperm being expelled right out there. >> reporter: the ferpt liesed eggs -- fertilized eggs are just floating in water so they're brought to these huge tanks to develop and flown homegrown algae. then they're released into the chesapeake bay. these are just some of the shells of the two billion baby oysters that this hatchery has deployed into the chesapeake bay over the last ten years. they'll deploy about half a billion it year alone which makes this the largest oyster hatchery on the entire east coast. it's record breaking numbers but this hatchery is expected to produce up to four times the amount. the problem? >> funding and oyster shells.
