today prosecutors and defense attorneys will present their closing arguments in jerry sandusky's child sex abuse trial. >> the defense suddenly changed course yesterday and decided not to put sandusky on the stand. delia goncalves joins us with a preview of what's expected in court today. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mark. it was indeed shocking to many that after days of sometimes gut wrenching testimony by eight of the alleged victims, sandusky did not take the stand to defend himself. but 1 character witnesses testified on behalf of the 68- year-old describing him as a family man and father figure to the troubled boys in his charity. however, ten of those boys claim sandusky sexually abused them over the course of 15 years. san dusky has denied any inappropriate behavior but a defense expert did testify the former coach suffers from a personality disorder that could explain the love letters he allegedly wrote to some of the boys. still analysts say sandusky skipped testifying because it could have allowed the
5:31 am
prosecution a chance to introduce new evidence, including a never aired clip of the bob kostis interview last november. >> i didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that i've helped. there are many that i didn't have -- i hardly had any contact with who very helped in many, many ways. >> i'm joined by debbie here to get her take on the triel. lots of folks -- on the trial. lots of folks shocked he didn't take the stand. what's your reaction to that? >> i think it would be legal suicide if he took the stand but it's a double edged sword that people on the jury wanted to hear what he had to say. >> what do you think the strongest points that each side has to make at this point, this juncture in the case? we have closing arguments set for a little later this morning. defense, twx, what are the
5:32 am
strong -- -- let's swap your mike for a moment if you don't mind so we can get a better hear at your reaction. so what do you think the strongest points of both sides are as they're heading into the closing arguments today? >> obviously the strongest part of the prosecution are the victims. we're not in the courtroom so we don't know how compelling the testimony came across, but from everything we've heard, it's really been very heart wrenching testimony of the victims. that obviously is the prosecution's strongest part. on the defense side, because this is a small town, people are from penn state, seven jurors have strong ties to penn state, they didn't have much to work with but what they do have is just saying that how much jerry sandusky has done with the second mile, that he's put through thousands of boys, and here you have only eight boys testifying, that's about the best that they can do. >> the defense even questioned
5:33 am
the investigators' actions saying that maybe the investigators coached some of these young boys to testify in the manner that they did. >> exactly. that was probably the best part that the defense did get to because they had -- they wanted each boy to know you're not out here on your own, that there are other victims out here testifying but then what the defense is going to say, well, maybe, there's some type of conspiracy in terms of getting them to testify to say almost exactly the same thing that happened. >> could be enough to raise some doubts, some reasonable doubt with some jurors perhaps? >> could be. >> we're not in the minds of the jurors so we don't know until they actually come down with their verdict. lots of the jurors, speaking of them, the members on the jury, have ties to penn state. small community. penn state has really been the core and the foundation of this community. how do you think that's going to affect their decision making? >> you know, i was really concerned about that in the beginning because i thought that they really should have moved the venue. now, sandusky wanted it to stay
5:34 am
where it is in bellefonte, pennsylvania. but at the end of the day, i think this jury, they're just going to focus ons what the victims stated, however the victims came across to them f they came across to them believable and genuine, i think they're going to go with the prosecution. >> we'll be watching. debbie hines, thanks so much. i'm sure you'll be watching as well. >> yes. >> thanks, delia. montgomery county police have arrested four young men for a series of burglaries in germantown. investigators say they tracked down a stolen vehicle yesterday that had been taken from the front of a home just hours earlier. officers found two of the four suspects in the car. the other two were captured in connection with another stolen vehicle which was taken several days ago. now police are working to tie the group to nearly 20 burglaries and numerous other thefts that have been committed in the area in the last three months. with today's temperatures nearing 100, the district is making some changes to help people stay cool. the hours have been extended at the city's public pools.
5:35 am
