12:04 pm
over the country. they're here with the congressional awards foundation. 40 of them got sick with suspected food poisoning. all morning long parents have been arriving to pick up their students. fortunately this illness happened at the end of their stay. the kids started getting sick on their way to a nats game last night. more got sick at the game. and then on the bus ride home, so many got sick that the bus driver detoured and took the sick kids to gw hospital. and then overnight here on campus, more kids got sick. emergency crews were called this morning. they set up a triage to evaluate the kids giving some of them i.v.s and then took 14 students to the hospital this morning. >> they were kind of dizzy. you have to run to the bathroom and do your stuff. >> reporter: a very unpleasant night? >> yes action exactly. >> reporter: feeling better now? >> yeah, completely fine,

hydrated. it's all good. >> they were put on an i.v. and sent to a couple of area hospitals. >> it must have been scary as a family member, guardian, right? >> it still kind of is, although the word we got was suspected food poisoning. there's not been a confirmation of that. so we really still don't know what's going on with all the kids. >> reporter: again, these students were not george mason students. they were here, staying here with the congressional awards foundation. george mason just put them up in the dorms. it's believed that the food they ate that got them sick was not here at george mason. it's believed it was probably downtown, perhaps a banquet they went to tuesday night, perhaps lunch time yesterday. the fairfax county health department is involved trying to nail that down, talking to the different establishments where the students did eat. but most of the kids are headed out, have already left this

morning. the parents came and picked them up and many of them feeling better. some still in the hospital waiting to feel better. but things -- most people appear to be on the mend. i'm peggy fox reporting live at george mason. back to you, jc. >> thank you very much, peggy. closing arguments are getting under way in the child sex abuse trial of former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky. manuel gallegus reports from bellefonte, pennsylvania, where the judge instructed the jury this morning. >> reporter: jerry sandusky declined to answer reporters' questions as he walked into court this morning with his wife. the jury could begin deliberating this afternoon after both sides present their closing arguments. jurors began their day listening to instructions from the judge about the meaning of reasonable doubt. the judge told them not to find sandusky guilty on mere suspicious or doubt, that -- suspicion or doubt, that they have to be absolutely sure. he also addressed the question
12:07 pm
of when conduct becomes criminal. it's not a criminal to take a shower with a boy, wash his hour or rub his back. you may think he exercised poor judgment but poor judgment is not criminality. the jury will make a decision without hearing sandusky's own words. the former football coach chose not to testify in his own defense. the defense instead tried to show investigators coerced the accusers to make statements when they shared information between the witnesses. they tried to prove inconsistencies within the eight accusers' stories and called numerous character witnesses, including sandusky's wife to testify about the coach's work in the community and how well he treated the young boys he met true his charity. prosecutors have tried to prove sandusky was a serial sexual predator. the eight accusers gave graphic testimony about the alleged abuse, but the strongest witness may prove to be former penn state coach mike mcqueary who told the court he saw sandusky engaged in what appeared to be a sex act with a young boy in a campus shower. manuel gallegus, cbs news,

bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> this morning the judge threw out three of the counts against sandusky saying that two did not have enough supporting evidence and a third duplicated another count. sandusky faces 48 criminal counts. authorities have released an audiotape from george zimmerman's first interrogation. on it he describes the encounter with 17-year-old trayvon martin that led to the teenager's death. zimmerman claims that the struggle started when martin jumped from a patch of bushes. we should warn that you zimmerman's account of what happened may be disturbing for some to hear. >> he still kept trying to hit my head against the pavement. i don't know if there was a sign or what it was. so i just -- when i slid, my jacket and my shirt came up and when he said you're going to die tonight, i felt his hand go
12:09 pm
down on my side and i thought he was going for my firearm. so i grabbed it immediately and as he banged my head again, i just pulled out my firearm and shot him. >> zimmerman pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. martin's family and civil rights activists say that the defendant racially profiled the teen and ignored a 911 dispatcher's advice. the showdown continues between the u.s. attorney general and house republicans. eric holder commented this morning on the vote that went against him in congress and how he might resolve that conflict. we get the latest now from tara mergener. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder is holding out hope negotiations can still resolve the showdown with congress. >> i think the possibility still exists that it can happen in that way. >> reporter: a republican led house committee voted on wednesday to hold him in
12:10 pm
contempt. >> the ayes have it. >> reporter: four refusing -- for refusing to turn over more documents in the investigation of a failed gun smuggling sting. the program was called fast and furious and allowed thousands of guns to cross the border into mexico. holder's office has already turned over thousands of documents and he says he offered to compromise with the republicans on releasing more. >> we put before the committee a proposal that would have allowed for a resolution of that matter consistent with the way in which these have been resolved in the past through negotiations. >> reporter: but here on capitol hill, republicans accuse the administration of a coverup. they want the full house to vote next week on whether to hold the attorney general in contempt. the white house tried to shield the fast and furious investigation claiming executive privilege, but california republican darrell issa says that won't fly. >> even if there is some executive privilege, it couldn't possibly apply to all
12:11 pm
the documents being withheld. >> reporter: withheld. >> reporter: issa's aides says a few hundreds pages of documents could be enough to satisfy them. they may be able to head off a constitutional showdown. tara mergener for cbs news, capitol hill. still to come when the news continues, a school bus monitor it bullied. and it's all caught on tape. >> we'll have more of that horrible taunting incident by a group of middle school students and the groundswell of support from around the world for a woman who was simply doing her job.
12:12 pm
12:13 pm
a 68-year-old bus monitor was the victim of bullying while doing her job. middle school students took cell phone video as they harassed the woman on the bus. now that video has gone viral. patrice walsh some with the grandmother about the attack. >> reporter: karen klien says the comments hurt. she didn't realize haw bad the taunting was until she watched the video. >> you're so fat. >> reporter: how does it make you feel to watch what they were doing to you? >> it didn't feel g. i didn't want to watch it. >> reporter: didn't it hurt you, karen?
12:14 pm
>> yeah. yes, it did. >> reporter: they were bullying you. >> yeah. and i tried to ignore them. that's why i didn't hear some of the stuff because i just kind of -- tried to shut them out. >> reporter: one comment was especially hurtful. it referred to suicide. klein's oldest son took his life ten years ago. her daughter broke down when talking to us about it. >> they said that you're so -- i think it was something like you're so fat and ugly that your kids should probably -- or probably will kill themselves. >> reporter: klein also remembers one of the students hitting her. >> i only felt him hit me once. it wasn't hard or anything, you know. but i saw in the film that it was more than once. >> reporter: she believes they should be punished. >> i think they should have some form of punishment. i don't even know if they could be charged. >> reporter: greece police have interviewed four of the
