romney with hispanics has grown. he said romney is just trying -- [indiscernible] on thursday he said it doesn't matter what mitt romney's position is on immigration or mine for that matter. they're not going to support us. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> president obama's new deportation policy is estimated to affect between 800,000 and 1.4 million young illegal immigrants in the united states. well, at least 18 people have been rescued from a hotel in afghanistan just north of kabul. late thursday, three suicide bombers attacked the hotel taking several people hostage. the attackers were armed with machine guns and rocket- propelled grenades. they spent the night in a gun battle with afghan forces and at least one gunman was killed and one afghan policeman was also killed in the attack.

some members of the house republican leadership and attorney general eric holder are willing to negotiate an end to a stalemate over the releast of justice department documents. the move is an amendment by both sides to avoid a constitutional confron station. house speaker john -- confrontation. house speaker john boehner said the house will still hold a vote next week on contempt of congress. he had the job for only eight months. now commerce secretary john bryson has resigned. he suffered a seizure after a series of traffic chriss less than two -- collisions less than two weeks ago. first police investigated possible hit and run charges. the 68-year-old bryson was found unconscious in his car in los angeles june 9 after the second collision. secretary bryson took medical leave june 11. a member of virginia's house of delegates is resigning over an extramarital affair. a democrat from alexandria will

leave officer at the end of august. david englin first spoke publicly last april. the work continues for the jury in the jerry sandusky trial. jurors asked the judge to review the testimony from to of the witnesses. they will not hear from the latest accusers. one of sandusky's adopted sons claims he abused him. manuel gallegus are a more. >> reporter: -- manuel gallegus has more. >> reporter: a startling revelation from one of his own sons. through his attorney matt sandusky said he met with prosecutors this week to say for the first time he was molested by his own father. matt is now 33 and was adopted by jerry and his wife dottie as

an adult after living with them as a foster child. he was reportedly prepared to testify but it's unclear why he was never called as a witness. the news was not presented in court so the jurors don't know anything about t. they're sequestered in a local hotel with no tv or phone. earlier the jurors heard the defense and prosecution sum up their cases. defense attorney joe amendola passionately portrayed sandusky as the victim of overzealous accusers. but the prosecutor called the 68-year-old a serial predatory pedophile. he finished his arguments standing directly behind sandusky saying he molested, abused and hurt these children horribly. you know he did it. find him gills of everything. manuel gallegus, cbs news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> jurors are sorting through 48 criminal counts.

if convicted. sandusky could spend the rest of his life in prison. get this. an accused police impersonator is in jail now after pulling over a real cop. oops. happened wednesday on route 301 in upper marlboro. the officer says that anthony giovanni pulled him over for speeding. the officer identified himself as a capitol heights police officer. giovanni claimed he was a military officer from louisiana. he was later arrested by prince george's police. the culpeper police officer accused of shooting and killing a woman has now been fired. daniel harmon-wright is charged with murdering patricia cook. a brief memo 9news received from the department says harmon- wright's termination dates back to june 19.

it is also a result of the investigation into cook's death. here's a look at some other things making news now. a colleague says wikileaks founder julian asaing is prepared -- assange is prepared to face arrest. if his request for political asylum is denied. he's hold up inside ecuador's embassy in london. the moment he leaves he could be deported to sweden to face rape charges. yesterday london police waited patiently outside the embassy in the upscale neighborhood of knightsbridge. it's unclear when ecuador will make a decision on the fate of assange. more people are getting to go home in larimer county, colorado. the fire in the high park area has now burned more than 68,000 acres. it's about 55% contained right notice. so far the fire has destroyed 189 homes and is blamed for one death. police in prince william county are asking residents to stop feeding the bears. they've been sighted across the county in search of goodies. police say don't put out your

trash can till the morning it's picked up. take down all bird feeders. clean out the back yard grill. if you spot a baby bear, back off. the momma is most likely right around the corner. a move to miami has paid off for lebron james and the miami heat. they won the nba championship last night. they won the series 4-1 and lebron james was stellar. triple doubles, 26 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds. he was also named the series mvp. this is miami's second title. they won one years ago when shaq was on the team. that was back in 2006. after the win, the fans in miami took to the streets to celebrate but they didn't really cause much trouble as far as the local police were concerned. there were a few reports of disturbances but nothing major. our time is 4:36. all the heat and humidity is expected to give way to a day of thunder and rain. howard will be back at 4:39 to

welcome back. severe weather alert today. the concern is going to be for the afternoon hours. we'll be hot, not nearly as hot as the last couple of days with highs in the lower 90s. the afternoon hours will feature some strong, maybe severe thunderstorms with potentially wind gusts and heavy downpours. more in your seven-day forecast in about five minutes.

goldman goldman sacks n. is a big day for american airlines and its union. a federal judge will determine if american can break its contracts with pilots and other union members. it's a deal which involves cutting costs and laying off at least 12,000 workers. american airlines back in november filed for bankruptcy. twitter had problems. it told its users it was fixed but then it wasn't. it had a cascading bug. no word if it's working this morning. coming up, delia goncalves will highlight one woman's story and how she turned her life around to help other victims. >> more on that and your weather first again. severe weather alert today. we'll be right back.

4:44. a severe weather alert today. the heat and humidity causing some major storms later today. >> the cold front will come in so we won't be as hot. it will all come together and the threat to strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon. that means potentially damaging wind gusts and also the potential for some of those heavy downpours but we need the rain. there's a plus side. >> close the patio umbrella. >> don't leave the windows open. this is the sort of weather you have to pay attention to and make sure you're not going to get caught in one of these storms. you may have to alter your plans till the storm passes. here's a look at your day plan other this friday which we're always excited about fridays around here. 84 degrees. it's so warm this morning. we're not going to really drop that much more. we'll be in the low 90s by noon. 91, maybe 92. yelled we were 96 by -- yesterday we were 96 by noon. even by noon we may see a storm

or two starting to form. looks like that will happen west of us first. then the storms will work their way across the region early to mid afternoon. by 4:00 some thunderstorms around, 91. we could have a lingering storm around in spots by 8:00. i really think by 8:00 most of this will have passed. a temperature 84. that's good news. the nats are up in baltimore playing at camden yards tonight with allege rivalry there with the orioles. we have some showers up. had some light ones push through the metro. have some showers from harrisonburg into the shenandoah. sperryville, you may get one of these showers. luray, this is going to come up toward your neighborhood. western maryland north of kaiser, this is tracking up toward cumberland. some of the heavier showers we're seeing. there could even be a rumble of thunder with this. this is extending toward berkley springs and hancock moving into southern pa in the next little while. temperatures still way up there for this time of morning. easton is 79 along with pax

river. it's 73 in culpeper. a few lucky ones in the 60s but you'll notice the warmth in and around the metro area. rockville 80. fairfax still 78. 82 in baltimore. 81 in arlington and alexandria and here in washington, we look out on our camera, a steamy morning, 84. feeling like 90 out there with the heat index and humidity at 67%. here's the wider picture. there's a front out to the west. you can see this line of showers and storms. that's the front. as the front gets closer, it will fire more showers and storms. it's going to get through here later on today. more likely this evening and tonight. behind it drier air but we'll watch the front by the noon hour producing some showers and storms out toward the shenandoah valley, maybe northern maryland. by 3:00 in the afternoon, a line of showers and storms. some of these could be on the severe side coming through us for the afternoon and evening hours. first part of that through the southeast. then we're watching the front out to the west coming through

western maryland, maybe out toward winchester, cross junction, i-81, martinsburg and hagerstown at 6:00. by midnight, look. most of this is gone south and east of us. the drier air moves in for the weekend. looks pretty nice around here tomorrow. going to be at the beach on saturday? going to be down toward virginia beach and norfolk? there may be a stray storm through midday but even there looking better by afternoon. as we look at the forecast, we've got temperatures today in the low 90s. again the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon. tonight 60s and 70s. drier air starts to move in from the northwest. a good looking weekend. upper 80s to near 9 on both days. there could -- 90 both days. there could be a late storm sunday into sunday night and next week much more comfortable. chance of an afternoon storm. 81 tuesday. wednesday 83. again a couple of storms possible. then we start to warm up a little by thursday. let's go to monika here at 4:47 with a look at time saver traffic. good morning, everybody. basically you just have that

decades for lillian to believe in herself and believe that love isn't supposed to hurt. >> all the years i was married starting from my very first year, i became a victim of domestic violence but i didn't know what domestic violence was. i thought that's how marriage was. but then again i thought about it and i said, but i never saw my dad hit my mom once. so i'm wondering why is mine different. >> reporter: an abuse that almost cost the life of her unborn child, abuse that once left her with a broken neck. >> the police came and started asking -- i remember him saying well -- [indiscernible] the embassy of nigeria. that was all. >> reporter: she said her ex- husband used his influence to continue the beatings without ever facing charges. she confided in a friend and after a dozen years of abuse, she finally had the courage to leave for good. >> she's like, don't go back there.

he's going to kill you. >> reporter: with no job or place to go, she lived in the family car before moving to a shelter. now she's decided to help other victims of domestic very buice. >> i feel like -- domestic abuse. >> i feel like the people need the community to help. >> reporter: she launched an online manager seen a year -- magazine a year ago. rerefuse abuse offers testimonies and resources for battered women. it's been a long journey she says but she can now smile. seeing the accomplishments of her children and the future of their family. >> i haven't seen the american dream yet but i hope one day to turn it around to help millions of women worldwide. >> reporter: delia goncalves, 9news now. >> she is hoping to launch a second edition of her magazine soon. good luck to her. we hope she can. for more information on her website and her story and how you can donate, just go to wusa9.com. in health news this morning, life span in the u.s. still trails other developed

countries. even though we spend much more money on health care. a university of colorado study says life expectancy in the united states is about 78 years. if you are poor, it's 73 years. that compares to a life span of almost 90 years in monaco and 84 years in japan. researchers in canada have found a protein in the blood of pregnant women which can predict if they're likely to have a fetus with growth problems. researchers hope this discovery will lead to a first trimester blood test so mothers and doctors know early on if extra monitoring is necessary. stress good for your health? in some cases it's possible. a stanford university study suggests that short-term stress can actually help improve your immune system. researchers tested rats and found that so-called fight or flight response stimulates immune activity. but the study also says long- term stress works against you. researchers say more studies are needed to be performed on

4:55. your weather first. severe weather alert today. we have the heat and humidity in place. we have had a few showers and storms here and there this morning but it's been pretty sparse. the activity will be picking up this afternoon. right now live doppler 9000 hd, pretty quiet. a few sprinkles to the north and the west. but the big time stuff not expected till the afternoon hours. so this morning we'll have a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures will be rising toward 90 late this morning. low 90s for lunch time. that will be about the high today. don't expect us to get much
