the threat for severe weather. three weeks ago we had all the tornadoes. that is not like that. itself conditions are difficult. i'm not expecting tornadoes but expecting potentially strong storms which could have damaging wind gusts, straight line gusts. this morning balmy, 83 degrees. it is a steamy morning. by noon 90. we could also be seeing the start after few storms, especially west of d.c. which will rumble across the area during the afternoon and evening hours with highs in the low 90s. a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 89 degrees. this morning we've had a couple of light showers over us. one line, a second line, a thin line now but you throw in the daytime heating and these things will increase in their coverage and intensity. showers this morning, western maryland and out toward the shenandoah valley are fairly light. looking at some of the temperatures here, here's sperryville seeing a shower, light one toward front royal and also in western maryland as well. you see the showers dotted about from cumberland toward just west of martinsburg moving

off to the northeast. temps this morning, it's sticky out there. cool spots in the low 70s and 69 out toward luray but 82 in annapolis. 75 in la plata and 74 in leesburg and frederick. let's go over to monika samtani now with a look at time saver traffic. we've had troubles on the northbound side of i-95 in virginia namely in woodbridge where there were two separate accidents. one at the prince william parkway along the left side of the road and another just north of the okay quain which was quick -- owe occoquan which was quickly moved to the shoulder but you see the traffic forming already past woodbridge and past the two spat accidents. -- separate incidents. this is going to be slow and heavy because of the two separate accidents with authorities on the scene. back over to the maps and this time to the north side of town. 95 in maryland looks great between baltimore and our beltway. we'll take a live look in college park. no issues to report and down here at the wilson bridge as

women. all lanes are -- as well. all lanes are open. back to you. 6:02 now. later today family and friends of those who were killed in two metro red line trains that collided are going to have to relive some of those painful memories. >> three years ago today those nine people were killed. 80 other passengers were hurt. it was the deadliest crash in metro's history. delia goncalves joins us with more on how authorities and those affected by the disaster are honoring the victims later this morning. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it will be a somber celebration a little later today, a very difficult day for lots of families in the area and hundreds of passengers who remember that day so well. the new hampshire avenue overpass has been the scene of a makeshift memorial, but now all the pictures of the victims have been removed and they're now replaced by this one memorial plaque covered in red. that will be unveiled a little later today as the mayor also announces plans for a memorial park and garden nearby.

the national transportation safety board found metro and three manufacturers were to blame essentially for that deadly crash citing a faulty brake system and safety equipment that never detected the stopped train ahead of the moving train. 20 lawsuits were filed, including one representing the nine victims. most of the cases were settled out of court but today we're told we could see more suits because the district has a three-year statute of limitations and that statute officially expires today on the third-year anniversary of this deadly red line crash where nine victims lost their lives. 12 children were left orphaned. their mothers, fathers died here that day, three years ago. coming up at 6:30, what metro has done to make the system safer, even though problems still exist. we'll have that side of the story coming up in a half-hour. mike, andre came, back to you-- >> andrea, back to you. >> thank you, delia.

now to a bombshell that was dropped at the trial of jerry sandusky yesterday. the former defense assistant coach for penn state. there's new information that came out yesterday that jurors are not going to know when they start deliberating because they are sequestered in a hotel. but after deliberations started came word one of jerry sandusky's adopted sons says that his father abused him when he was a child. matt sandusky who is now 33 was prepared to testify but that did not happen. his father jerry sandusky is charged with sexually abusing ten other boys. last night the jurors spent more than eight hours deliberating but they did not reach a verdict. they have a lot of counts to go over. they'll resume their deliberations later this morning. an accused police impersonator is behind bars this morning after trying to pull over a real cop. it happened wednesday on route 301 in upper marlboro. the officer says that anthony mastrogiovanni pulled him over

for speeding. he then claimed he was a military police officer from louisiana. in fact he's from crofton, maryland. mastrogiovanni was arrested by police. if you think you've been a victim of this impersonator, call police. the miami heat clinched the nba championship last night. the heat beat oklahoma city 121- 106 finishing the series off four games to one. lebron james finished with a triple double, 26 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds. lebron james was named mvp. this is miami's second title. the first one was when shaquille o'neill was the team in 2006. after the game fans took to the

streets. thousands gathered in the restaurants and parks all having a great time. the celebration for the most part didn't cause problems with local police. just a few disturbances but nothing major. 6:06. time for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is off today so here's alexis christoforous with today's money headlines. >> reporter: stocks suffered their worst sell-off this month as bad news about the economy kept piling up. manufacturing in the u.s. and china is slowing down. more americans than expected applied for unemployment benefits last week and home sales slipped last month. the dow jones industrial average tumbled nearly 251 points while the nasdaq plunged 71. oil fell below $80 a barrel for the first time since october. a weak global economy has investors worried the demand for oil will slip. it's a big day for american airlines and its unions. a federal judge will determine if american is aloud to break its contract -- allowed to break its contract with pilots

and union workers. in november american airlines parent company filed for bank result si and twitter users ran into trouble. the website experienced technical problems thursday after telling jurors the site was -- users the site was fixed, it acknowledged the problems were ongoing. they blame a cascading bug that's a software area take creeps into certain parts of the system. that's your money watch. in new york, i'm alexis kristoforos. our time 16:07. -- is 6:07. we're under a severe weather alert. violent storms could be brewing in the region. howard is keeping an eye on things. >> plus, the story everyone is talking about this morning. we have a big debate here in the newsroom. the verbal bullying of an elderly school bus monitor. find out why the kids involved may not be getting off scot- free.

we won't be setting any records for the heat but still it's going to be hot. high temperatures in the low 90s. this afternoon you'll need to watch out for the threat for strong to even severe thunderstorms. i'll have the full forecast in a few minutes. it's been a tough one on the northbound side of i-95 with an accident north of dale city blocking the two left lanes. you have traffic state through woodbridge. here at the 14th street bridge, 395 looks great. no problems into the downtown

means and when things will happen, here's howard. >> it means we're concerned for the afternoon hours today for the threat for severe thunderstorms. could be containing damaging wind gusts. three weeks ago had 12 confirmed tornadoes on a friday. we're not expecting that. this is a different sort of setup in the atmosphere where tornadoes are not likely but damaging wind gusts are definitely possible in the strongest of thunderstorms. we're raising the flag for those concerns. i think the afternoon hours, 12:00, 1:00 starting west to about 6:00, 7:00 is when we'll have the likely time frame for these storms. there could abcouple of -- could be a couple of rounds of storms. that's it in a nutshell. here are the details to start you out on this friday morning. fairly quiet early. we'll have temperatures starting in the low 80s. low 80s here in town. 70s north and west. been a year since we've had a june night which has not tallen below 80 degrees. i think it's going back to 1995. so a very warm start. we'll only get into the low 90s.

it's still hot but not as hot as yesterday. 99 at national yesterday broke a record. dulles missed theirs by two. they got up to 96. 90 this afternoon at 4:00 with a high around 92. scattered strong storms. heavy rain and gusts being the primary concerns. there could be a lingering storm or two by 8:00 at 84. this morning just some light showers have pushed through overnight. we see some light ones northern virginia, western maryland. a few storms back out in western and southwestern areas of virginia and back here. see this line in pennsylvania and ohio? that's ahead of a cold front which will be coming through later today. looking at these showers that are coming up here -- toward front royal right now and strawsberg, all of this is moving -- strasburg, all of this is moving to the northeast. breezewood. look at this.

temperatures, we've got readings in the 60s in oakland but most of us 70s and 80s right now. 83 in d.c. 77 in easton and patuxent river. gaithersburg 75. here in town a biewmy start to the -- balmy start to the day. we have mostly cloudy skies. 83. heat index right now 87 with the humidity at 65%. there's relief. look at it. chicago, detroit in the 60s this morning. us up toward boston in the low 80s. front there is going to come through so as we head toward the middle of the day, partly sunny. a couple of clouds, maybe an isolated shower. middle of the afternoon notice the showers and storms popping. they will be with us for the late afternoon as well. so the evening commute, the trip to the beach may get hampered by storms but drier air moves in for the weekend. that's the keyle. today 9 -- the key also. today 92. watch out for strong storms this afternoon. 89 tomorrow and sunday. looks real good for the weekend

being with us early this morning. >> glad to be here. >> it was a pleasure to meet you there yesterday on the beltway and even on a good day, midday the traffic is terrible. give us the plans for construction this weekend. >> this weekend we're going to be taking 95 north between van dorn and telegraph road down to one lane. so the message is it's going to be bad backups. but to help that some, we're going to close down the ramp from 95 north if springfield to direct some of that traffic. >> you're talking about the outer loop that's kind of a north and eastbound side of the beltway, only the right lane will be open. >> correct. >> for the majority of the weekend. there will be no access from northbound 95 in springfield to get to the outer loop, is that correct? >> that is correct. between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. we're going to shut down that ramp in springfield to help alleviate some of the congestion we expect to see with that one lane going through from van dorn to

telegraph. you can get -- to get on the bridge at telegraph road and route 1 but that would be an alternate route. >> you have some maps behind you, john. can you give us an idea of the best alternate routes to get around this this weekend? >> well, like i said, if you can get on telegraph road, we have good ramps here coming from north or south. duke street to our north over to route 1 and of course route 1 itself. if you come from the franconia direction, that would get you over to route 1 or telegraph road. but most travelers are going to want to go into d.c. or if you're going through on 95, go all the way to the american legion bridge. that's actually not much longer. >> if you're a north-south traveler, you definitely want to stick to the west side of town. take the american legion bridge which you normally may not do but in this case it will be the best situation across the american legion bridge, the north side of the beltway and back on to 95. the last time you did this on

the inner loop of the beltway, there was some major delays. >> yes. we had them backed up pretty badly. because we don't have any diversion for the inner loop and they were backed up to barnabas road. it's just a matter with one single lane trying to put all that traffic through isn't enough capacity. unfortunately that will be the case for two days saturday and sunday. >> john jacobson, you're giving us the best advice which is to stay away from the beltway in alexandria. thank you so much for being with us this morning. we'll be back in a few minutes with more on traffic. in the meantime you're watching 9news now. we'll be right back. ♪

damaging wind gusts. looks kind of gray. the sun has been up for a while. 83 soupy degrees. national airport reporting clouds at the top of the hour. 90 by noon. we will see an isolated storm or two by then. this afternoon scattered thunderstorms. some of these will be strong to severe with highs in the low 90s. yestled we got to 99 -- yesterday we got to 99. areas of showers, light ones pushing through this morning. from cincinnati up toward about buffalo, that's the cold front. we'll see that later this morning. looking at the showers now, the light ones pulling away from us through baltimore but out to the west up 81, we've had showers over there. temps running in the 70s and low 80s. low 90s for highs. 6:29. monika samtani is inside the air conditioned more comfortable studio with time saver traffic. >> just where i want to be as well. i think you'll want to be inside as well, whether inside your car or inside the office. on the the northbound side of i- 95, it's a bit tough. you have delays beginning in dale city heading up towards the prince william parkway

where there was an accident cleanup. two to three vehicles involved along the left side of the road. let's take a look from sky 9. this is the delay from dale city trying to get to the prince william parkway and beyond the occoquan river. there were two separate accidents that caused this backup. very tough. for an early friday morning, you're not used to it. let's go back over to our maps. this time to the bw parkway and route 50. these to are incident free coming in from annapolis and greenbelt. no problems through cheverly into the northeast corridor. we'll take a live look outside at 270. looking good at shady grove road. i'll be back in a few minutes with more. back to you. cbs this morning is about 30 minutes away. >> erica hill standing by if the studios in new york, studio 57 where they will be talking about what everybody is talking about, the elderly woman who was a bus monitor and she was bullied by some young kids. good morning, erica. >> good morning to you. we spent a little time with

will have to relive those memories today. >> three years ago those nine people were killed. it was the deadliest crash in metro's history. delia goncalves joins us with more on how authorities and those affected by the disaster are honoring the victims later this morning. she's near the crash site. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it is going to be a very tough day for the families of those who lost their lives three years ago today. they are asking the city to recognize their loved ones and pay tribute and homage to them. search this memorial plaque that will be unveiled a little -- certainly this memorial make that will be unveiled a little later today is part of that tribute to the nine folks who lost their lives. it replaces a makeshift memorial that has been on the overpass for three years. pictures and flowers, that has all been removed. this bridge overlooks the scene of that deadly crash. the ntsb found metro was negligent, its safety equipment

subpar when the two trains have collided. metro has improved its safety record over the years, doubling its safety staff and working to replace the 1,000 series train cars involved in that deadly wreck. though the system still faces the challenges, we all know experts say metro is far safer than it was three years ago. the mayor will also announce plans for a memorial ark and gardens and of course that will make lots of family members happy. they've been fighting for a place to sit and remember and think fondly about their loved ones who lost their lives here. today i should also mention the deadline for filing lawsuits in regards to this crash. 20 suits have already been filed. many of them have been settled out of court. andrea, mike, back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from near the site of metro's deadliest crash. coming up 06:34 -- up on 6:34. a message this morning from

prince william county police. police do not feed the bears. they have been sighted across the county searching for food. police are pleading with you do not put your trash cans out till the morning trash is about to be picked up. clean out the bird feeders. clean out the backyard grill. if you spot a baby bear, back off. they may be ciewpt but that means momma is -- cute but that means momma is nearby. colonel christian cabanis is the new commander at the post located at 8th and i street. it's the oldest active post in the marine corps. he takes over from colonel paul montanas being reassigned to the u.s. naval academy. >> it is a privilege to assume the position of leadership within the barracks family. we're great for the opportunity to -- grateful for the opportunity to serve.

welcome back. it is 6:41 and 83 degrees. if you're planning to head on the northbound side of i-95, well, in virginia that was our one hot spot with an accident north of the prince william parkway that was moved to the shoulder but left very low traffic out of dale city. a long slow stretch trying to get into woodbridge this morning. i'll show you a live shot from our sky 9 of route 1. it's about a mile and a half approaching and passing mount pleasant drive at least with the lanes open but route 1 taking a bit after hit again. now back over to our maps. this time we'll head over to the north side of town. route 50, bw parkway both of those are okay as you head in from the north and the east. no problems to report. the beltway north of town also

looks fine as you leave college park into silver spring. it's just the normal slow stretch. no problems on 270. we'll take a live look outside once again. if you're planning to head on the inbound side of i-66, you have your initial delays as you travel through manassas. then pretty much route 50 to 123. no problems to report at the american legion bridge. in my next report at 6:58, we'll take another look at the big picture. we're talking about it in the newsroom and the country is still talking about and upset over a bus monitor who was bullied on a school bus in new york. but the victim says she doesn't want the students who taunted her face criminal charges. >> both police and the school district say their investigation is not over yet. dick brennan reports. >> i still can't believe all this. >> reporter: a school bus monitor in upstate morning says she doesn't want to press charges against a group of seventh graders caught bullying her on video. middle school students in the

town of greece can be heard heckling 68-year-old karen klein calling her names and asking her why there's water running down her face. [indiscernible] >> unless you have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. >> reporter: klein, a grandmother of eight, was commended for keeping her cool during the episode but said the words hurt. >> your kids probably should commit suicide. i don't think they knew that my son had. >> reporter: the greece central school district and the police department have identified all four boys involved. they've spoken to the students and their families. >> as one father put it, his son is sitting back waiting for his punishment. so no one has denied accountability. >> reporter: the school district is now pursuing disciplinary action. additional videos were found online. >> we began goingling and searching for others and we were able to find the three total all posted by the same

this friday morning, we're so happy it's friday. you have no idea how happy it's friday. maybe you do. temperatures starting in the 70s, even low 80s. we'll get to 90 by noon. by then we could have an isolated storm start to pop, especially west of town out toward the mountains, i-81, that neck of the woods. the storms will be moving toward the east and get toward us. we'll see highs in the low 90s. the time frame from early afternoon to 1:00, 2:00 till about 6:00, 7:00 p.m. could be the most active portion of the day. a couple of showers overnight have pushed through the region. we've got lighter rain showers, northern virginia, western maryland. a couple other once southern west virginia. from northwest pennsylvania through ohio back to eastern kentucky, that's the cold front that will be arriving later. but you see the light showers which are coming up i-81 here, weakening as they get toward winchester, cross junction. you may see a few sprinkles that way. in western maryland, we've been watching the activity coming through from paw paw to berkley springs toward green castle and toward the west side of

harrisburg this morning. other than that just awfully sticky out. temperatures in the mid-70s in fairfax county. leesburg is 79 at this hour with 75 for gaithersburg. 78 in columbia and crofton. university of maryland college park 80 along with alexandria. 76 at fort belvoir. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera from tysons corner looking east, hazy skies out there. temperature 83 with a heat index already 87. that humidity 65%. the air still very muggy but drier air is on the way. behind this front, the air dries out. temperatures have dropped into the 60s. in chicago this morning. that front is really going to give us a pretty nice weekend. first thing it's going to do is give us the threat for showers and storms by the middle of the afternoon. 3:00 friday you'll notice the storms across the region. some still around here at 6:00, too. you may get no storms. you may get two or three storms in your location today until everything sweeps through. we get toward the midnight hour, maybe a lingering shower
