. today at noon we're keeping an eye on the skies because more hot weather along with high humidity could trigger some strong storms. our 9news now weather team has

designated today a severe weather alert day. of course, howard has been watching the maps. when do you expect the storms to arrive? >> in jc, in spots they're start to arrive but -- starting to arrive but we'll be seeing them arrive by 3:00, 4:00. some of these, the concern is from the storm prediction center and also right here, we've got a risk of severe storms. the main threat today and you can see it really from southeastern virginia going all the way up toward around springfield, massachusetts, the concern is going to be for damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours. we can use the rain. we're running about a 6 to 7- inch deficit so it's really dry. the damaging wind gusts we don't need. first let's talk about what's out there right now. had a couple of light showers earlier. one light back here, that's a cold front. that's really going to make for a nice weekend. some showers along the virginia- west virginia border. to the south of town where we're seeing more sunshine, more heat, we're watching a thunderstorm that has popped here not far from colonial

beach and a shower up toward baltimore at the moment. but it's the one down south. here's colonial beach across 17th, south of port royal. this guy is moving to the east, northeast at about 15, 20 miles an hour. it will cross the river, get into st. mary's county in about 30 minutes, 40 minutes or so. temperatures are running in the low 90s. so there's a lot of heat and humidity. we're up to 91. where the clouds have been thicker, it's in the 80s with a heat index value 96 degrees. we will expect with the heat and humidity around and you see the hazy sunshine out there temperatures to top out kind of where they are in the low 90s with scattered, strong thunderstorms here and there for really the rest of the afternoon picking up over the next couple of hours through the early evening at least. more on this coming up and of course the weekend. got good news on that jc, back to you. >> thank you very much, huward. today -- howard. today marks the three-year anniversary of the deadly metro redline crash that killed nine people. two trains collided near the

forttonnen station -- fort totten station. right now they're unveiling a plaque to honor those victims andle the people who tried to rescue them. our bruce less hahn is live in northeast washington for the ceremonial. bruce, what can you tell us? i know there's a lot of emotion there. >> reporter: a lot of emotion, a lot of tears, sad, a very salem day. they literally unveiled the plaque just about two minutes ago. you can look up there right there where there were all those bouquets and notes and all that sadness overlooking the crash site here whereas you say, nine people died. 80 people were injured. one good thing that a lot of people are talking about growing out of this is a new influx of money into metro and a new kind of safety culture and the effort, the intense serious effort to try and mike sure that -- make slur that this does not happen again. a lot of families were here. they club the family of general

david wurley and ann wurley who were both on that train, both coming back from helping soldiers, veterans in iraq and afghanistan. claire wurley is the sister of general david wurley. what was this like for you to see this plaque unveiled? >> this is a day and has been a day filled with so many emotions. first of all we're mostly very grateful to mayor gray, the administration for continuing to reach out to our family. we have had very difficult time trying to contact the other families. this is our first opportunity at getting to meet them and know them and hopefully we'll be in contact in the future. >> reporter: i know that the general and his wife loved this city, and they dedicated a lot of time and effort to this city. now there's talk about a memorial park in honor, not just the plaque but a femoral -- memorial park in honor of

your brother and all the other victims. is that something you'll be encouraging? >> absolutely. they will be -- they would be very proud and pleased. their hearts were in this city. they should dedicate -- they dedicated their lives to the very organization and they represented the military. so it's been a wonderful day. >> reporter: claire, the sister of david wurley and sister-in- law of ann wurley. thank so you much for your time. i appreciate it. there's the flag. you can see the folks gathering around and taking pictures. this will be here forever unlike the flowers and other temporary tributes. a lot of people saying never forget today. jc, back to you. >> bruce leshan, thank you very much. the jurors in the jerry sandusky trial are deliberating for a second day. and more accusers are coming forward. manuel gallegus has the latest now from the courthouse in bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky

returns to court to await the jury of seven women and five men dlaib rating inside the -- deliberating inside thehouse. they have also asked to review testimony from mike mcqueary as well as a mcqueary family friend that testified for the defense. mcqueary testified i saw sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the shower but a friend gave a conflicting account. he testified mcqueary told him he heard sexual sounds but never actually saw the alleged abuse. the sequestered jury is now deliberating without hearing a startling revelation. one of the adopted sons of jerry and dottie sandusky now says his father abused him. through his lawyer 33-year-old matt sandusky says he told prosecutors just this week that he was abused. he was reportedly prepared to testify as a rebuttal witness if his father took the stand. there were no details about where and when the alleged abuse took place and no indication why he did not come

forward sooner. jurors must sort through 48 criminal counts involving ten boys. the eight accusers who testified all met sandusky through his charity for at risk youth. manuel gallegus, cbs news, bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> another man is also accusing sandusky of sexual abuse. he has filed a lawsuit against the former coach. he says that sandusky abused him more than 100 times during a four-year period beginning in 1992. another day and another twist in the ousting of the university of virginia president teresa sullivan. now interim president carl zetimahl will delay his plans to take over. he will wait till the board of visitors decides. sullivan's fourth resignation

led to protests on the campus by students and faculty. the interim president says trust in the school will not be restored till sullivan's status is resolved. eight teens are in trouble with the law just one day after graduating from high school. youngsters were caught by security on the roof of wakefield high school in arlington around 5:00 this morning. according to police, the teens were trying to break into their alma mater. officers and canine units were called to the scene. the virginia man charged with plotting a suicide bombing inside the u.s. capitol is expected to plead guilty this afternoon. f.b.i. acts arrested him in february after a year long sting operation. he was provided with a fake bomb and fake gun. he has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of

i'm delighted to introduce the guest right now who might have the answer when it comes to helping young girls who have suffered air loss because of a serious illness. emma jean mitchell chief of staff for the answer. i'm also involved with the answer as a spokesperson. denise shelton is the c.e.o. of community bridge. and this is a nonprofit organization that really helps young girls. how old is the answer? >> well, we formed the answer in 2009. >> and why? >> well, we wanted to do something to help the underserved -- some of the underserved girls in the community, and we thought about what's a good way to do that and what are the issues that are important to girls, to teenagers. and so that's why we started the answer. >> really the answer provides

full wigs to young girls who probably have suffered from cancer or some other debilitating disease, that it's taken their hair. i know a little bit about wigs. and when you're a teenager, your look is so important to you. >> absolutely. so these wigs, let me tell you a little bit about them. they're fully individually customized to fit that individual. so we work with them, find out what they want, what looks good on them. and when we think about a lot of the issues that young girls are dealing with today, we know that hair is really important. >> oh, yes. >> they're already dealing with the challenges of addressing a very serious illness. so let's help them to build their self-esteem so they look good. it helps them to deal with their illness as well. >> you probably have noticed -- i know i have owe oat difference in these young girls -- i have -- the difference in these young girls once they get this hair. when you have a full head of hair, it makes you feel so good.

bullying a bus monitor have now received death threats. they're calling on people not to take justice into their own hands. mean bhiem, support -- meanwhile, support keeps pouring in for this bus monitor karen klein. the video of the four seventh grade boys bullying her went viral on youtube. some who saw it start add vacation and retirement -- started a vacation and retirement fund for klein. it has grown to almost half a million dollars. >> they say i'm such a great person and love me but they don't really know me. >> karen klein says she does not want criminal charges brought against the students and she says she doesn't want them expelled. she would like an apology from the boys, but some of them aren't ready to talk. she actually received an apology from two. they say kind of a lukewarm apology but we'll see.

>> at least suspend their bus privileges for years i would think. >> forever. make them walk to school like we used to do. >> uphill both ways in the snow. nice to have a little snow today. it's been a toasty, steamy day. the heat and humidity with a cold front coming, we're looking at the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, some of which could be here for the afternoon and evening rush hour. and the real damage today or the real concern today is damaging wind gusts. your day planner for the rest of the afternoon is going to include the threat for scattered showers and storms. i think those will be increasing over the next couple of hours. we're just starting to see things pop now off to our south as temperatures will make it another degree or two. we're throw dloa where we're going to -- we're pretty close to where we're going to be. i know the nationals and the orioles have that game at camden yards, i think it's going to get in but i wouldn't be surprised if there's a delay or two i just want to show you here we've got showers and thunderstorms. showers this morning.

thunderstorms starting to fire off to the south. look how much sunshine we have. this is really helping to heat up the atmosphere. that's adding more fuel and more energy for the potential for storms this afternoon, one of which has already popped near colonial beach back south of fort royal. this is all moving toward the east, northeast. maybe toward leonardtown, south of mcicsville. this is -- mechanicsville. this is starting to cross the river in st. mary's county. we'll see more of this as the afternoon wears on. easton 93. georgetown, delaware up to 95 degrees right now. fredricksburg is 92. however, out to the west low to mid-80s in the shenandoah valley. a little more comfortable there. heat index not much of a factor till you go south and east of town where it feels like 103 at the tappahannock airport. our heat index right now 96. lots of hazy sunshine out there. 91 at national. wind north at 6 miles an hour, but the humidity is still kind

of sticky, almost tropical out there with the dew point near the 70-degree mark. we're seeing cooler temperatures, though. this is the key for the weekend. up tort detroit and minute -- up toward detroit and minneapolis. the heat along the east coast will be pushed out of here as a front's coming. the other thing we're watching, the gulf of mexico, we may have debby formed the next couple of days. right now we're watching this band of showers heed of the front that -- ahead of the front that will be coming tonight. could be not just one but maybe two lines we're looking at setting up for the afternoon and evening hours. as we look at the future cast, we're -- we'll show you the showers that will pop this afternoon. the forecast? severe weather alert today. stay up on it. 93, 90, somewhere in that range. strong to severe storms, maybe damaging wind gusts. low 70s tonight in town with 60s north and west. drier tomorrow and sunday.
