a roof collapsed in the apartment building and we don't know if it's going to trickle down or not. >> that's 911 call from bladenburg, maryland at the height of the storms that tore through the washington area. hello everybody, i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us. the clean-up from those storms still underway tonight in local communities and many homes still in the dark tonight. pepco says about 10,500 customers have no power. most of the outages in prince george's county and the

district. that's down from about 50,000 there's night. now one of -- last night. now one of the hardest hit areas is bladensburg. our ken molestina is outside a badly damaged apartment building. ken? >> reporter: we've been following the damage caused from the microburst since yesterday when it hit. it's by far the worst conditions in the entire washington metro area. crews have been out here round the clock to get the power restored and cleaned up and some neighbors in the area are finally getting the power back on. take a look over my shoulder here. what you're looking at is a large piece of roof. it came off of a building about three blocks away. we're being told that when the burst hit the winds were so strong it brought it flying across the area and landed on top of the cars you see right now. when you look at the aimenings you really get an appreciation for how strong the storm really was.

the massive chunks of debris smashed up cars and displaced residents in bladdensburg are all over the streets tonight. more 24 hours after the burst hit these residents and the neighborhood are still shaken up. >> it was amazing. i've never seen anything like that. >> reporter: for the first time since the storm smacked the region we're hearing the frantic 911 calls from people calling for help and describing the destruction left behind -- >> reporter: more of the same. another badly beaten and bruised neighborhood trying to get back on its feet. >> this is the second time we've seen something like happen right here in this part of the block and about five years ago the house next to ours where these folks are sitting had a tree that almost bisected their roof. >> reporter: this house had the tree in its front yard come crashing down on top of it.

the weight of the tree cracked the walls and forced the house into a lien in effect making it uninhabitable. another tree also fell crushing all four cars parked along the curb. >> this is evidence about how powerful -- we know how powerful tornadoes are but i think this is pretty awesome i guess is the world or awful. >> reporter: pepco has been working around the chloric on saturday the get -- clock on saturday to get power restored to the thousands of customers still tonight sitting in the dark. their response will be the first real test this year of the utility company's preparedness. >> this is a tough fix. the numbers are tough to get back on because there's so much inis that truckture damage and damage around our equipment that they have to get through to get to our equipment. >> reporter: now back out live here i'm joined now by mr. ronnie gill the director for prince george's county and the office of emergency managements. where are we at right now? where are the efforts at right now? >> well, like you said we're in

the recovery phase. most of the residents have either sought shelter with residents and family members and some have sought shelter when the shelter that was set up at -- gretchen at bladensburg senior high school. they're there, they have sharp facilities and we're providing meals for them, breakfasting lunch and dinner and transportation. >> reporter: characterize this for us. what has this been like for you all? >> it's been very long. a long 24 hours thus far but i think the county has made tremendous strides and just the debris removal. we've completed most of our damage assessment and like you said providing for our citizens by providing the services that they do need. >> reporter: all righty mr. gill the director with the office of emergency management out here in prince george's county. bruce, back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot for that. the frederick county farmer counting his bless, and thanking his neighbors tonight

after high winds destroyed a barn with about 150 cows inside. gary numberburg has that story -- gary nurenberg has that story. >> reporter: it's not official but to robert it seemed clear. >> tornado hit. plain and simple. >> reporter: destroying a barn 183 feet long and 100 feet wide filled with more than 150 cows. >> it started raining so hard and the winds started blowing so much it was shaking my truck when i was sitting in it. and then -- the hail started. >> reporter: pieces of the barn ended up in the road 200 yards away. in fields. hanging from power lines. and throughout the county -- >> we have some roads closed with downed trees and power lines. >> reporter: at the johnsville farms in the family for four generations the concern was immediate. >> we had to get all the cows out in piece. we didn't lose anybody. >> reporter: the cows helped. >> we had to saw some of them out. we had to clear debris, a lot of o debris. a lot of them were smart enough

to come and get away from it. this whole end of the barn was just ripped right off and a lot of the cows were able to get away from the debris as it was coming off. >> reporter: neighbors and family pitched in. a generator provided power for a milking operation near the front of the build. it is a farm community and the community helped. >> i feel very lucky. lucky that i wasn't in the barn first of all because -- i may not be here. second of all i feel lucky that we have so many people that love us. to help us out. >> reporter: gary nurenberg, 9news now. >> the storms now behind us, looks like we're going get a break from the heat and humidity. let's go outside right now where anny hong is standing by to tell us how long the nice weather will last. >> boy, what a fantastic weekend it's been so far. low humidity. it still got pretty warm, temperatures up to91 degrees in downtown. that's the official high but a lot of folks are enjoying it. right now 80 in downtown. down to 70 for leesburg and in

the mid 60s for martinsburg and culpeper, manassas around 68 degrees, dew points in the 60s and 50s and that folks is more comfortable from a few days ago. in the 60s we usually say low 60s is pretty nice. i would say variable too and actually some of the other spots. now satellite and radar picture showing us high pressure is in control. just a few clouds out there but a really nice night. some viewers wrote in from demand doctor saying they were -- alexandria saying they had a fantastic evening. the wakeup weather is showing you plenty of sunshine to start out the day and temperatures in the 60s and 70s and a nice cool start. when i come back we'll talk about the chance for some showers and thunderstorms a little bit later. bruce back to you. dozens of people attend a memorial service for the slain owner of a local deli. friends and family and customers of june lim gathered

at bethesda, maryland to remember the 64-year-old lim. earlier this month she was shot in the neck and killed when she hoped up for -- showed up for work to operate the popular grace deli. the victim's son thanked the community tonight for the outpouring of support. >> the overwhelming support, unbelievable stories. and i visited -- the store yesterday. and i put up another sign just thanking the community. overall their support. and just to see all of the new signs so they kind of calling it the shrine and they're really maintaining the site. there's new signs, people are still coming by -- yesterday putting up their signs. >> police need some help on this. they've made no arrests in the case and offering a $25,000 rehard for information lead -- reward for for information leading to an arrest and conviction. in lieu of flowers make donations to the national association of victim assistance. tomorrow students and faculty of the university of

virginia will hold a rally in support of the ousted president sullivan. it takes place two days before the board of viz tores meets to -- visitors meets to consider reinstating sullivan. at a rally sunday she got support. virginia governor said he'll fire the entire board of visitors if it fails to resolve the furor on tuesday. jerry sandusky is on suicide watch tonight. no reason given. he's facing the rest of his life in prison after a jury last night found him guilty on 45 counts in his child sexual abuse trial. the former penn state assistant football coach was led from the courtroom in cuffs last night. defense lawyers say they'll appeal his conviction. manuel gallegus reports. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's conviction is a relief for the penn state university community. >> i felt that he was guilty and i was glad to see that verdict. and hope things can move on.

>> no one wins but there's some closure that we can have now. >> reporter: sandusky is now in the center county correctional facility awaiting sentencing. his wife dottie was seen returning home saturday. earlier she spent about ten minutes at the jail. there were jeers as the 68-year- old left the courthouse after his conviction on 45 criminal counts involving the sexual abuse of children. his defense attorney told the crowd it was a difficult case. >> essentially, the sentence that jerry will receive will be a life sentence just due to the length of it. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: joe amendola told us sandusky is like a naive kid himself and doesn't seem to fully understand the magnitude of what's happened. >> it's been explained to him. whether or not he fully grasps it is anyone's guess. >> reporter: it could take years to play out in court with officials still facing criminal charges, pending civil lawsuits

and ongoing investigations. penn state released a statement saying it will privately and fairly address the victims' concerns. and compensate them. a juror said the accuser were all credible and sandusky's lack of reaction to the verdict made jurors realize their decision was the right one. manuel gallegus, cbs news, state college, pennsylvania. >> listen up metro riders. customers traveling on the orange, blue and red lines should expect weekend delays because of track work. metro says buses will replace orange line trains between east falls church and west falls church. cosmeses using the buses should allow about 20 minutes extra travel time. you can go to the website, wusa9.com, for the latest information on delays this weekend. still ahead on 9news now tonight, massive flooding still causing problems for residents in minnesota this weekend. we'll have the latest. >> i hope they're fair.

a roof collapsed at a busy ontario, canada shopping mall. take a look at this video captured on a shopper's cell phone. rescue workers were called to the mall this afternoon when part of the roof collapsed over a parking area for customers in mall staff. that incident prompted the local mayor to declare a state of emergency. no word yet on what caused the collapse. fortunately nobody hurt. in upstate new york the case of a bullied bus monitor has sparked a inapt bullying cause. hundreds of -- antibullying cause, hundreds of people showed up just outside rochester to call for an end to bullying and also praised bus monitor karen klein for her using restraint in the face of abuse. the 68-year-old grandmother was verbally taunted and harassed by a group of seventh grade boys. that incident captured on video sparked outrage around the country and beyond.

a fund was started to award and send her on a vacation. >> i wish i could send each and every one of them a thank you note. i can't. i can't -- do my e-mail. i don't know if i ever will cry because if this is doing good than i don't need to be sad about it. >> that vacation fund now totals more than $500,000. the four boy who is taunted the bus monitor have all written letters of apologies and their mother also apologized. the basinet accident being investigated by -- bus incident being investigated by school officials, there's more rain in minnesota. forecasters say today's rain is not likely to cause further major problems. flood waters throughout northeastern minnesota continue to recede. residents are returning to their homes to clean-up the flood damage. >> not every community would have been able to pull this off and to actually get you this about once every 500 year rain

like this. with no one dying and when you see the tremendous damage and the holes in the roads and the -- culverts and the gas lines exposed it a really a tribute to duluth and the surrounding area that things didn't get worse. >> while most waters vie ceding the mississippi river continues to rise due to massive flood runoff. tonight, fire has forced more than 2300 people out of their homes in saratoga springs, utah. in an effort to save the residences, firefighters are now posted around the homes which are located 40 miles south of salt lake city. authorities say the fire is about 30% contained. in colorado a seatback for firefighters battling a massive wildfire there. firefighters trying to save homes were forced to retreat for their own safety and that showed containment of the blaze

to about 45%. the wildfire has already destroyed nearly 200 homes. another 1,000 evacuation notices were issued last night. meantime, a second wildfire in southern western colorado has burned nearly 800 acres. and forced people from their homes. a continued mix of hot, dry and windy conditions have raised the dangers of wildfires across colorado and several other western states. coming up on 9news now this saturday night, will showers interrupt a super nice sunday on the way? anny has the full forecast when we come back. ♪

okay now let's go look at tropical storm debby. this is the fourth named storm of the season so far. and right now in the gulf of mexico it is actually impacting already oil and gas production. concern about nodding, strong winds from texas to florida. the outer rain bands especially pounding florida right now. some strengthening rather is expected. the track's far from certain but right now it looks like it's trying to go west to texas. the sustained winds are at 50 miles per hour and gusting up to 65 but for the next few days really not going anywhere. right now temperatures 74 in arlington. 80 downtown. lower 70s in college park and great falls you're also at right around 70 degrees. oak city, looks pretty good right now, mid 60s if you're going to the beach this weekend. they got pounded with some rain and storms yesterday. and it is 73 up north in hagerstown. here's a look at the national satellite and radar picture where again florida really getting sounded with heavy rains because of tropical storm debby but in the mid-atlantic

thanks to high pressure we have a break from the humidity with the cold front coming through yesterday and looking far great sunday start. want to get the ride in? do it. because it will be cool and low humidity to start the day. afternoon evening showers and thunderstorms are possible and monday also a better chance of showers and thunderstorms with the cold front coming through. overnight clear to partly cloudy and pleasant. open the windows if you want. lows will be in the low 60s to low 70s around downtown. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy and nice. air quality is code yellow which is moderate. temperatures starting out in the 60s and 70s. now for the afternoon, we could see some increasing clouds mixed in with the sun. it will still be warm and again the chance for showers and storms and highs upper 60s to lower 90s. winchester 85 and leesburg manassas around 87 degrees for your afternoon high. then in downtown, 89. annapolis also looks pretty good at 87 degrees. here's your next three days. monday is a code yellow alert day because of the chance for some showers and storms and temperatures in the mid 80s and
