hello everybody, i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us. the president of pepco tells news news that 99% of the homes lost power during and after the recent storms. they have their electricity back on tonight. earlier this evening we spoke with tom graham in our studios. he says that downed trees were the root cause of this weekend's power outages. that saw some 45,000 homes in the dark at the height of friday's storms. and while the utility company spent millions of dollars and

made progress, they're cutting branches away from the power lines, the job is not finished. sounds like more outages during future storms can be expected. >> well, we have five year plan. we're making an investment in our infrastructure at about $910 million. tree trimming is part of that. right now, we're replacing several hundred miles of cable and we're doing a lot of other infrastructure improvements. >> how many more trees do you have to cut? how many more years? >> there's no goal to cut a certain number of trees but we're going to be working for five years. >> they continue to oppose legislation in montgomery county to give citizens more say. tonight they were not trimming trees in one prince george's county town. they were cut large parts of -- large parts of them down. matt jablow reports. >> the hail started and i couldn't even see the house next door. >> reporter: it was a fast

moving storm with long-lasting effects. 48 hours after high winds and heavy rains battered parking lots of -- parts of the d.c. area some residents were still in the dark and trees littered the normally well manicured landscape. >> it was very windy. a very intense 20 minutes. >> reporter: harold lives in cheverly. one of the last to fully recover. >> the wind came through and it hailed from all direction, you could hear the transformers blowing and buzzing and it was pretty intense. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: at the height of friday's storm about 45,000 pepco customers in d.c. and maryland lost power. earlier tonight the number was down to about 400, many of them right here in cheverly. >> it came from the very top of this tree. >> reporter: cheverly resident brian not only had to do without pour for two days, he also had to do without one of his cars badly damaged by a

tree limb. >> it's about a 30-foot limb and it complete labella out the back window. >> reporter: he said in the 18 years he's lived in his cheverly home. normal large branches -- no large branches had ever fallen off one of the trees until friday and like all of his neighbors he's hoping it doesn't happen again for another 18 years. or longer. >> i wish i could pray. i don't know if i could. >> reporter: in cheverly, matt jablow, 9news now. >> moving down south, tropical storm debby is forcing residents along florida's gulf coast to flee low lying areas tonight. they've been warned of possible flooding. storm is already dumped heavy rain on parts of the state and one death is blamed on a tornado from that storm. a second victim now missing in the gulf from an alabama beach. as the storm kicked up rough surf. top winds from the storm are tonight clocked at about 16 miles per hour. louisiana officials also taking precautions tonight. >> we have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

it's not you know -- we don't need to panic right now but we need to absolutely stay on top of this thing and monitor around the clock so you don't have time to retreat and start a second line of defense. so we'll do that second line of defense now. long before this storm comes ashore. >> but get this. despite the warnings issued in the florida panhandle. the storm has not totally dampened vacations. thousands are still on the beaches today. anny hong has the latest models in the weather center. hi anny. >> bruce, yeah the tropical storm debby is just slow moving almost stationary which is why they're getting so much rain in parts of florida and into alabama and along the gulf coast. here's tropical storm debby now. the winds are sustained at 60 american gusting up to 70 and i mean right now it is stationary. a couple of hours ago it's

slowly moving northeast at around 3 miles an hour. check out the forecast models and you can see they don't know really where debby is going to go. a couple maybe saying it will go to the northeast impacting the northwest coast of florida. and also the west coast of also the panhandle. some strengthening is possible over the next 48 hours. maybe a minimal hurricane. but as still -- our model is having a hard time really figuring out what tropical storm debby might do. we're still watching it apparently because of the slow movement from 10 to 20 inches of rain possible in some spots. we'll talk about the chance for showers and storms in our area when i come back a little bit later. bruce back to you. >> 10 to 20 inches thanks. in queen anne's county maryland, firefighters have been battling a brush fire on kent island all day long. that fire was almost contained now but it has been an all day effort by firefighters from at least seven different counties. the fire started around 6:00 this morning in the heavily wooded area on kent island. 50 acres of forest were charred

as the blaze climbed to seven alarms at its peak. >> it's a pretty large fire. about 50 acres. and we believe that we have it about 90% contained at this point. we have a lot -- all of the companies from queen anne's county here. from at least seven different counties and one different state. >> the fire is a little different, i'm really upset and this time we're living. we're leaving -- >> first time in 25 years. >> kind of scary. >> it's scary yet exciting. >> no homes or businesses very damaged. -- were damaged. one firefighter was taken to the hospital with an undisclosed injury. fire officials expect the blaze to be fully contained by sometime tomorrow. an update now on the story we first told you about in february. fairfax county police now charged the director of the reston zoo with animal cruelty and possession of a controlled substance. 26-year-old megan mogenson was arrested on friday after a five month investigation by police into the death of a sick wall by at the zoo.

it improperly treated sick animals police say. one person was shot and six others stabbed after a fight broke out at a gaithersburg, maryland restaurant. police say at one point, more than 100 people were involved in this brawl at the new red rock cafe. montgomery county and gaithersburg city police were both called to the restaurant at about 1:30 this morning for a report of a fight that broke out during a rap karaoke event inside the restaurant. >> the red rock cafe had extensively advertised a special rapper karaoke night and that attracted individuals from throughout the metropolitan area. we believe from what we know at this stage of the investigation that the fight began inside the cafe between female patrons. male patrons joined in. the fight escalated. moved out to the parking lot. >> police say none of the injuries was life-threatening and so far nobody has been arrested. montgomery county police tonight looking for anybody

with information about the brawl. they want you to contact police and callers can remain anonymous. we should know within the next couple of days whether teresa sullivan gets her job back at president of the university of virginia. supporters held a campus rally today. virginia governor mcdonnell is also weighed in telling the board of visitors that it has until tuesday to reach a decision. armando trull reports from charlottesville. >> we constitute a community and i want to say it -- a community based on the fundamental jefferson january principle of love. [ applause ] >> reporter: that love drew thousands to the quad. >> the distinction between the population that composed our university. the faculty, the students, the staff. and the alumni. have become insignificant. we've come together for a common cause. >> reporter: they called it a rally for honor. ♪

some carried signs with the phrase attributed to uva's founder president thomas jefferson. it's more honorable to repair a wrong than persist in it. >> this isn't just the faculty speaking, this is all of us speaking as a united voice coming together saying at least these are the principles we believe in and also we want our president back. >> reporter: 20 of the university's most distinguished pronecessary so fares and -- professors and staff called on the board to do the right thing on tuesday. >> this unjust action of the board must not stand. we are united and asking for our president to return. >> reporter: some at the rally are calling on director helen dragas to resign. >> i think these to go because she's violate -- she has to go because she's violated the honor code and ousted the president behind closed doors. i think this was a coupe. >> reporter: the embarrassing controversy at the flagship university of the state angered many alumni, students, donors and even the governor mcdonnell

who told the board to resolve the issue on tuesday or resign. almost 200s year ago president thomas jefferson founded this university and he argued that knowledge is power. and on tuesday, the power struggle what he termed an academic village may finally be decided. in charlottesville, armando trull, 9news now. >> supporters are saying they'll be back in front of the quad on tuesday. a firefighter is injured after fighting a blaze in mount rainier. the house fire started around 3:00 this morning in an empty two story dwelling on 32nd street. firefighters battled the flames from the outside and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. he was taken to the washington hospital center where he was treated and later released. the cause of the fire is under investigation tonight. we've got an update now on that roof collapse at a shopping center in ontario, canada. 9news now first told you about the collapse at the algo center mall in elliot lake last night.

now officials say one person may have been killed in that mishap and another may still be trapped in the rubble. >> everything has been uncovered. it leads up to the fact that -- [ indiscernible ] the area is still unstable and dangerous. it is estimated by emergency crews that there will be a quote ten to 12 hours of further stabilization required in the area before the rescue crew is able to go in. >> workers initially thought that nobody was hurt in that collapse but in addition to the trapped person, they now say 22 people were injured. tonight, extraction teams are standing by until the area is stabilized and they can go in and search for possibly more victims. just ahead on 9news now this sunday night. historic day in egypt. the latest on developments in the elections and what it all means for the united states. >> and coming up later -- it's

mohamed morsi is the new president of egypt. the muslim brotherhood candidate is egypt's first democratically elected president and the first islamic since the arab world to be elected as head of state. drew levinson reports tonight. >> reporter: egyptians celebrated into the night in cairo marking mohamed morsi's victory. the candidate is egypt's first democratically elected president. morsi pledged to be a leader for all people. saying quote -- i will treat all egyptians the same. and respect them equally. he defeated ahmed shafiq in a runoff. he was former president hosni mubarak's prime minister. mubarak's 30 year reign ended

levinson, 9news now. we've got a stabbing aboard a metrobus that sends one woman to the hospital. it happened just after 2:00 this afternoon on an a. 8 bus driving along sixth and chesapeake streets southeast. two women got into an argument. one woman pulled a knife and stabbed the other several times. the vim was taken to med star and her injuries are not life- threatening. a three car crash in charles county, maryland leaves one person dead and a second injured. police say it happened this afternoon on indian head highway and lewis place. achievery blazer crossed the center line and struck another car headton. the vehicle of that car was killed and a passenger was hurt. yet another third vehicle was involved in the crash and sustained minor damage. tonight details of the crash and its cause still under investigation. we're just a week and a half before the fourth of july holidays and some of colorado's

most popular summer tourist destinations are beginning threatened by wildfires. theory two dozen homes near rocky mountain national park have been destroyed and hotels and camp grounds at the base of pikes peak have been evacuated. forcing the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents in colorado springs today. the biggest fire is burning near fort collins where morn 118 -- more than 118 square miles has been scorched and at least 191 homes destroyed. elsewhere in the west, firefighters have been reporting progress against wildfires in utah and new mexico and the state of california. coming up on 9news now this sunday night, take a look at a mug. that's a face of a champion believe it or not. we'll explain when we come back. >> and what can we expect heading back to work and school monday morning? is it school still? >> maybe, maybe not. >> summer school. anny has the full forecast when we come back. ♪

and then we really cool things down, bruce, before we heat things right back up and it's summer. all right, let's take a look at our michael & son weather camera tonight where a nice shot of the capitol and let's go to live doppler 9000 hd to show you we've got a couple of showers and storms in the area. really kind of pop-up in nature and we also some some pretty good cells go through bowie and prince george's county. it was kind of just hanging out there all to speed and it's all now moved off to the east. we still have a couple of showers out -- to the west of us into new market and warrenton and we did also see even a severe thunderstorm warning around 3:30, 4:00 in the culpeper area but you can see around luray and sperryville we have a couple of good cells coming down and also maybe some hail in some of the storms. now right now, temperatures in the lower 80s in downtown. still pretty mild outside. a little humid also. gaithersburg 73 and leesburg 75 degrees. the national picture, we have been watching florida because boy, they have been getting

hammered from tropical storm debby. here it is even a tornado watch was in effect earlier. we have high pressure in control. again, some scattered showers and storms but another cold front coming through tomorrow. which is going to cool things down even manufacture. so monday -- more. so monday watch for a couple of showers and thunderstorms. you will want to bring the umbrella just in case and today looking to be even cooler. i'm talking upper 70s in some locations and it will be breezy and then get ready for the end of the week where the heat and the humidity return. the risk for severe weather on your monday is again the eastern seaboard here. highlighted in yellow. the main threats being damage winding and -- damaging winds and hail. here's the futurecast and monday morning i pause this for most folks as you're driving into work it's going to be dry for that commute but you can maybe get a shower here or two. also in the afternoon maybe see some showers and storms as the front comes on through. and also the winds will pick up tomorrow afternoon. but once that front goes through i think tomorrow night looks actually pretty good as

we clear things out. and boy, get ready for some much cooler air. even in the mountains by monday night, tuesday morning, you could get down into the 40s. overnight, mostly cloudy and mostly cloudy. an isolated shower or thunderstorm and lows 64 to 73 degrees. monday morning, partly sunny. showers are possible. and air quality looks pretty good. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. for the afternoon, partly sunny and breezy. scattered showers and storms. highs around 85 degrees. northwest wind 10 to 15 miles per hour. here's a look at your zone forecast. we start in cumberland getting up to 79. again, some showers and storms are possible. hagerstown around 80, same deal for martinsburg and leesburg and warrenton. 83 degrees. manassas also top out around 83 and temperature-wise, pretty confidentable. -- comfortable. in downtown 835. the average high is 87 and annapolis 83. and do keep in mind because the winds picking up we have a small craft advisory in effect for the bay on monday. your next throe days so tomorrow, is a yellow alert day
