11:01 pm
the most divisive issues in america this century. today in a 5-4 decision the supreme court upheld the affordable care act. and the court upheld the individual mandate. >> that is the requirement for almost every american to bay health insurance. the court ruled that mandate is constitutional if the fine is considered as a tax. chief justice john roberts sided with the liberal judges in this case and he is the one who wrote that opinion. as americans line up on either side of this decision we're joined now by ken molestina and gary nurenberg. gary will tell i couldn't say the plan is just the ticket to make our lives better while ken will cover the repeal and replace. >> the stories do not necessarily reflect their viewpoints. they're just helping us explore this controversial issue. we're going flip a coin to decide which of these guys goes
11:02 pm
first. >> ken, since you're to my right, call it in the air. >> and it's heads. >> gary will you have your shot to go right after ken does his thing. >> thank you, sir. >> ken, the stage is yours. >> thank you very much. the criticism here is mostly rooted in costs and a general feeling that the affordable healthcare act has too many shades of socialism. it's a very dirty word in this country to many but here's a top three list of why those who oppose this say the move is destined to failure. first off, many argue the supreme court's decision to uphold the affordable healthcare act allows for an even farther reaching arm of the federal government, giving the government power to make this law means more people will be told what to do with their money and their lives. >> you can choose whether you want to have a larger and larger government, more and more intrusive in your life. >> secondly, the cost of this plan won't be cheap according to some early estimates. the center for medicare and medicaid services says the law will impose millions of dollars
11:03 pm
on fees on import verse brand- name prescription drugs and health insurance plans. roger pylon of the cato institute spoke on this concern here in our studios. >> it's only a matter of time before the costs start coming home, then those consumers are going complain. >> lastly, the increased demand for healthcare has a direct tie into the amount of physicians that will be available to treat patient. according to the association of american colleges, they've estimated a shortage of more than 20,000 primary care doctors between the years 2020 and 20 25. >> today's ruling underscores the urgency of repealing this harmful law in its entirety. >> obama care was bad policy yesterday. it's bad policy today. >> and clearly there are many other points that have been identified as cons in this by opponents, but our explanation here is limited by time. so if you would like to read the documents themselves you can find them on our website, wusa9.com. all you have to do is click on this story. >> thank you ken for that. >> now gary nurenberg two the
11:04 pm
pros. >> as we talked about this, the presumption for everything we're doing here tonight is good faith that each side believes its argument and its projections about what the affordable healthcare act will mean, will achieve, will cost. some of the most important provisions don't kick in for another two years so projections may be as close to fact as we can come. the arguments now from those who think this plan is a good idea. chief among them the president. >> first, if you are one of the more than 250 million americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance. >> and according to maryland attorney doug gansler, another benefit for those already insured -- >> our premiums will ultimately go down. >> if we can have more patients with insurance to come into a facility, that certainly helps our bottom line. >> because for those who are uninsured -- >> this law will offer you an array of quality, affordable private health insurance plans to choose from. >> erasing costs as a reason to delay seeing a doctor when
11:05 pm
you're sick. >> odds are in that time if they weren't being treated of course now they're going to be sicker. >> which makes treatment more expensive. economist steven fuller. >> we will enjoy better healthcare for less costs. >> other benefits already in place? >> insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits on the amount of care that you receive. >> good news for richard, who racked up $1.4 million in medical costs in 2003 alone. >> most people may not reach the lifetime cap but the reality is many people will with a chronic illness. >> as 9news now's scott broom reports -- >> before the law about 55% of insurance plans had some kind of lifetime coverage cap. those policies covered 105 million americans. they're among the winners after today's supreme court ruling. other benefits already in place? >> because of the affordable care act, young adults under the age of 26 are able to stay on their parents' healthcare plans. >> and now insurance companies
11:06 pm
-- >> can no longer disjim nature against people with preexisting conditions. they can no longer drop your coverage if you get sick. they can no longer jack up your premiums without reason. they are required to provide free preventive care like checkups and mammograms. >> when it's fully implemented in 2014 -- >> insurance companies will no longer be able to discriminate against any american with a preexisting health condition. >> add it up budget-wise -- >> the congressional budget office, which is really the neutral, nonpartisan arrest biter of the budget -- arbiter of the budget says it will reduce the deficit. >> unlike the coin toss, the proponents today won. >> is that right. okay. yes, they did, with that decision. we want to know what you have to say. log on to our wusa9.com facebook page and let us know what you think about the affordable healthcare act. one soldier is dead and two

others are injured after a shooting at fort bragg, north carolina. investigators say the gunman shot and killed a fellow soldier and then turned the gun on himself. that shot was not fatal. the soldier was taken into custody. the third soldier suffered slight injuries from the shooting. no word yet on a motive. tonight the u.s. attorney for the d.c -- for d.c. faces a tough decision, whether to pursue charges against his own boss attorney general erik holder. the house of representatives voted to hold holder in contempt of congress. it's an unprecedented move. republicans pushed for the move saying holder refused to hand over all the documents. a probe into a botched gun trafficking operation on the mexican border known as operation fast and furious. two guns from the sting operation were found where a border patrol agent was murdered. >> we have a duty, an obligation to pursue this to the fullest extent and to make sure that we have all those documents that we can make sure
11:08 pm
that it never, ever happens again. >> it's clear that they were not interested in bringing an end to this dispute or even obtaining the information they say they wanted. >> holder called today's house vote nothing more than election year politics. if you thought it was hot today you haven't seen anything yet. a heat advisory in effect for tomorrow. our topper shutt joins us now. are we going to break any records, especially on the golf course? >> i think we will. the record at dulles is pretty much a lock. record high 195. that seems like that's going to go by the way side. 101 downtown. a little tougher mark to crack. 105 in baltimore. real tough mark to crack although i think we could be close at tieing the mark downtown. heat advisory covers the entire metro. 11:00 a.m. on friday until 9:00 p.m. the heat index could be between 105 to 109. we're thinking closer to 105 but that's the temperature our body will feel.
