montgomery county, the district, prince georges county. technically doesn't cover ann anne arundel county. so the watch covers everyone. let me show you where the storms are. they are not close to town, but they are making a b line toward town and headed for west virginia. now western virginia. look at all the lightning and they have a lot of potential here for heavy rain and strong winds and perhaps small hail as it rolls through here. we have several hours, probably 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, even midnight before they hit the immediate metro area. they will go from west to east. they will go through winchester first and loudoun county and fairfax and then the district. so again, it's going to be several hours. i would lower your umbrellas and bring in small chairs and secure loose objects because some of these have strong winds and a history of producing heavy rains and frequent

lightning as well. anita mentioned the records. we crushed the records today. temperatures are still pretty toasty. 101 was the old record. now it's 104. 102 is the new record at dulles. we fell short up in baltimore. they topped out at 103. the record high was 105. temperatures are still in the upper 90s in triple digits across the metro area. the heat index is over 110. we are looking at 96 downtown officially. but look what it looks like. 107 downtown. so the heat is -- the excessive heat warning continues until 9:00. we have a severe thunderstorm watch until 1:00 a.m. iowa any tax we'll let you know if any relief is in sight. today's weather, not the most pleasant for spending an afternoon outside, but it didn't stop people from showing up at this year's festival on the national mall where the name of the game. >> i'm surae chin on the

national mall. despite the dangerous scorching heat, thousands have come out to the festival. >> nothing like a little -- >> shave ice. >> to keep from melting in the summer sun down at the festival. >> i don't think our body can take it. >> marcus schilling from south carolina is carting his three children around. >> it's hotter down there. >> nothing? >> no, no, this is hot. >> so hot it seems the volunteers at the first aid tent were baking in the heat. >> we really do encourage people when it's this hot to take it easy. to sit down, rest in the shade. >> volunteers are prepared and on the lookout for people who are over heated and may need help. >> i'm trying to find some shade right now. >> does it help? >> yes. big time. >> and complete relief at the only air-conditioned tent at the festival. >> what does it feel like? >> a heat wave. >> on the washington mall, surae chin, 9news now. >> tonight, rescue crews are still at it trying to find a

man who is trap under the debris of a collapsed warehouse in prince georges county. the roof caved in at the recall document storage warehouse in landover. this happened almost 22 hours ago. and rescuers are hoping they can still find that person alive and get to him in time. scott broom is live on the scene monitoring their progress. scott, has the whole thing, has the search been slowed down by more debris falling down? >> reporter: it has. they have had to stop some of their progress and restart. they just restarted again with cranes behind me here. all of this looking for 46-year- old rowland haggans of washington who has been missing since this collapsed last night at 10:00. just a short while ago, we spoke with the fire chief here in prince georges county and haggans brother. >> all of the different earthquakes that have these type of collapses that create voids to people stayed in for

weeks. and been pulled out alive. >> he was on the forklift when it happened. he could have barricaded himself inside the forklift. the forklift has a steel cage around it. he is probably in the forklift and sitting and waiting until some help will get to him. >> haggans was among five workers who were inside when the document storage center collapsed last night. he was the only one trapped. the cause may have been an accident with a forklift, according to rescue spokesman. >> that forklift accidentally hit one of these large storage racks, causing a collapse of all of those. and one of the storage racks hit a main support beam for the roof, which caused a roof collapse. >> all of us want to see this man come out of here alive. all of the workers are here for that victim. >> back live now. you're looking at iron workers and rescuers. three cranes. all of them prepared to go

through the night. but in a very pain staking fashion to take this building apart because they believe there's a significant possibly that haggans is still alive in there. even sew, i have been warned that this is a drama that may take days, not hours, to come to a conclusion. in landover, scott broom, 9news now. back to you, anita. >> hopefully at the end of that, there will be a happy ending. thank for that report. >> the university of virginia board member who led the push to ouster the university president, teresa sullivan, will stay at her post. bob mcdonnell reappointed helen as director of board of visitors. led effort to force sullivan to resign. but the board reversed their decision on tuesday after days of protests by the student, faculty, and alumni. he hopes his reappointment helps reconcile differences and moves uva forward. as we have been saying, it's a scorcher outside.

saw some serious golf out at the at&t national today. my friend, derek mcginty, is out at congressional country club with the details. >> i got the highlights and a special guest. we'll get to him in a couple minutes. as you know, the tournament is the tiger woods tournament. today, he made an effort to show he still has it. the former world number one skyrocketed up the leader board. he had an eagle on the back nine. front nine not so good. in fact, he missed the fareway here. couldn't convert the put for par until he falls back to even. he did manage to rally in the stretch of birdie on the 8th, which was one of two birdies on the front nine. ended up with a 68, finishing 2 under par. but hunter mayhem, this dude lost his mind. he took this course apart. four birdies on the front nine. 7 under. let's hear from the guys. >> i thought today i got more out of my round and on a golf course like this, he's not

going to hit it perfect all day. it's too difficult. have to make some saves. today i did. >> everything was really solid today. it was really nice. made a couple nice short ones coming in. so it was all there today. all felt nice. >> i think the fareways were slower. the greens were very firm. >> yeah, the greens were firm. it was a hard course. that's been the consensus as we talked to analysts at the at&t national. let's look at that leader board. hunter mayhem is in first. he has a three-way tie, including virginia tech alumni. tiger woods shot a 68 today. not bad, but not great. he's five shots back off the lead. he'll try to make a comeback over the weekend. we are joined here now under our little oven tent with lavar arrington, washington post

columnist and blogger. >> i don't want to disrespect any columnist. i am a blogger. >> you are in here, you are looking at golf. we are talking about the weather conditions out here and as a former professional athlete yourself, you played in everything from blistering heat to horrible cold. talk about, is it mind over matter to make yourself perform at a high level? >> of course it's always mind over matter. in this type of heat, you want to make sure you stay hydrated. do the things that really count. drinking a lot of water. drinking things that have pee potassium and have electrolytes to keep yourself where you feel fresh, so to speak. so it's hot. it's very hot. when it's so hot by the touch, you are profusely sweating. it's one of those things where it's mind over matter. >> you don't want to think about the weather.

you don't want to be thinking man, it's hot. because you aren't thinking about playing ball. >> when it's this hot, you do think about it a little bit. it does cross your mind and you have to be aware of it. you have to be aware of how you adapt and you adjust to the weather conditions. that's a part of it. that's a part of your craft is knowing, you know, what environment, what is going on around you in order to be able to be effective and what it is that you're doing. >> someone that has been around this area and part of the sports scene for a long time, tiger woods being so personally involved. >> the fact that congressional is such a beautiful place to begin with, makes this pretty awesome. the fact that tiger woods does this charity here and plays here with at&t. i think it's great for the community. it's great for the surrounding areas. it really is just a pleasant place to be outside of this

murder defendant, george zimmerman, was in court hoping to be released on bond.

the judge needs more time to make a decision. zimmerman is the neighborhood watch volunteer that shot and killed trayvon martin. it became a nationally known case. zimmerman claims he fired in self-defense. at time, today's bond hearing seemed like a full blown trial with both prosecutors presenting evidence about the shooting. including part of a 911 call reported during what seemed like a struggle between zimmerman and martin. >> gun shots. >> now the defense considered calling zimmerman to the stand. but when the judge said that would open him up for cross- examination by the prosecutors, his attorneys decided against it. again, he was not granted bond. >> heat, heat, and more heat. mother nature isn't giving us a break. topper is back with a scorching forecast coming up. but first, what's next after the supreme court's landmark healthcare ruling? we visit a local hospital to

much of the talk around the country today centers on the supreme court's lightning rod decision to uphold the affordable care act. over at united medical center in southeast d.c. they are convinced the law will save the hospital and district hundreds

united medical center says the affordable care act will insure his patients have healthcare coverage and that the insurance companies will pay the hospital to help them. >> the district of columbia, everybody has access to healthcare. but everybody doesn't have healthcare. and what the affordable act does, it requires everyone to get healthcare so they have access to hospitals like united medical center. >> the hospital held a summit on stress and health disperties. advocates are concerned that it will help address both. >> in d.c., bruce leshan, 9news now. >> the affordable care act pays states to expand medicaid to everybody below 133% of the poverty line. it mandates everyone else buy insurance, but it also offers help to people without enough money to pay for it. we want to take a second and clarify a mistake from last

night's edition of 9 news at 7:00. during an interview, we told you about an abc news washington post poll on how american voters view the healthcare law. but our graphic had the members reversed. here is the correct add version. it shows 55% voters have an unfavorable view while 37% like it. healthcare groups offered free medical screenings today in district ward 8. it was also taking place at united medical center on southern avenue. one focus of the summit, keeping stress to a minimum. studies have shown stress can make other medical conditions even worse. president obama is now offering federal aid to help the victims of what's now the most destructive wild fire in colorado's history. so far, that fire has destroyed about 350 homes and at least one person has died. several other people are missing right now. the president surveyed the damage and declared the state a disaster area. as of this morning, the wild

fire was considered 15% contained and the national forest service says that percentage will go up by the end of the day. here in our area, crews are battling a wild fire out in the national park. it is burning on neighbor mountain in page county, virginia. right now, it's about 800 acres in size and still growing. luckily, no structures have been damaged. the national park service closed several trails and shelters and this fire is considered 0% contained. the extreme heat was triggered a now upgraded red alert. didn't help firefighters efforts. let's go back to congressional and topper to see if we catch a break this weekend. >> here's the deal. by that fire, we'll get thunderstorms tonight. of course it will come with lightning. the rain will help them. we is gone ahead and declared a code red for the rest of the night because we are getting reports that storms in west virginia producing 70 and 80- mile per hour winds. i don't see any reason why they won't hold together. this is as unstable as i have

ever seen the air mass from a metrological standpoint. we are concerned about these storms. you have plenty of time to put your umbrellas down and take precautions. the watch covers the entire metro area. it stops in prince georges county and does not cover anne arundel county and the bay. they will issue another watch. this will affect everybody in our viewing area and all the way to the eastern shore, including the resorts. the ocean resorts. now, here's the radar. you can see how much lightning is in these storms. these are the storms that are just about to enter east and west virginia, headed toward morgantown. we are several hours away. but i want you to be aware, you can do some stuff to prepare and get ready for heavy rain, some frequent lightning and 70, 80-mile per hour winds. again, you have temperatures in the low hundreds. any time thunderstorms develop, they can be heavy or they can be severe. right now, a bargain.

down from 104. 96 downtown. we're looking at 100 in frederick. mainly upper 90s. 95 in cumberland and 97 in culpeper. you factor in the humidity and it will jump the numbers a little bit. in fact, it will jump the numbers over the century mark. feels like it's 107 downtown and in manassas. feels like it's 118 in leesburg. that is a dangerous heat index. we are under an excessive heat warning until 9:00. here's the deal. tomorrow 99. a couple thunderstorms. and sunday, 96 with a couple of thunderstorms. any storm that develops can be heavy or could be severe as well. all right, we'll talk about at&t. wear light colored clothing, drink a couple bottles of water before you set foot in the course. eat light meals. you don't want to do that, it's too hard on your body to digest. okay. here we go. let's talk about the next three days because we're looking at still code yellow tomorrow and

code yellow on sunday and also code yellow on monday. again, we have gone code red tonight because of that line of thunderstorms. 99 tomorrow. 96 sunday. 95 on monday. between the heat and storms, we're going to keep it code yellow for now. next seven days, spiking up a little bit hotter on tuesday and wednesday. the fourth back to 98. we go back to 91 on thursday. cold front goes through, finally, and drop temperatures in the the upper 80s. severe thunderstorm watch until 1:00 a.m. take some precautions now. put all the umbrellas down and lay them down or bring them inside, because things are going to be blowing around. back to you. >> good warning, thanks, topper. we'll be right back.
