around. showers and storms rumbled through early on this morning for some of us. our current forecast calls for a little bit more sunshine later on this afternoon. outside right now, we are sitting at 80 degrees at reagan national. by noon time most of us will be at or near 90 degrees. making it to the lower range flints there is a thunderstorm warning now as this heavy cell and heavy downpour moves off to the east. temperatures this morning are fairly mild. we are going to put things up into the 90s. not quite as hot as we have been seeing over the past through days. we will hold the middle 90s. by the time we get toward the end of the week, there is a slight warm up particularly as we go from friday into

saturday. monika? >> reporter: if you are traveling around town, obviously you are going to find there is debris on your secondary roads. a lot of road closures this morning. if you are planning to head on the major thoroughfares at least a couple of things will help you out. hov restrictions are lifted on i-27 0 and 66 inside the beltway. public transportation as far as we know, normal regular service this morning. that should help you out. public transportation may just be a really good idea. also if you are planning to head over to canal road, that is a major closure between reservoir road and arizona avenue. and georgetown pike in virginia and mclane is closed as at old dominion drive as well. again as i said, hov restrictions are lifted, route 80 is closed between 270 and route 75. and we'll take you down here a couple of closures.

southbound connecticut avenue between adams drive and perry and norwood drive closed between dr. bird road and route 108. on 99, you'll want to know 95, 395 and 66 outside the beltway, restrictions are in effect this morning. it is only inside the beltway, inbound on i 66 that it is lifted. coming up in my next report, we'll take another look at area roads at 5:10. back to you guys. if you are able to see us this morning, you are one of the lucky ones. we have hundreds of thousands of people still without power following friday's storm. right now, pepco reports close to a quarter million customers are without power. that is in the district, montgomery and prince george's county in maryland. bge has a similar amount affected, most of them are in prince george's, howard and baltimore county. now reporting 5000 customers are in charles county.

potomac edison reports 14,000 of their customers and 188,000 customers in west virginia are affected. dominion power says their current number is 17 2,000 without power. there are some school closings to tell you about. summer school has gone on. dc public schools are closed. dc p.s. administrate stiff sites will be open. essential employees should report to work. prince george's and alexandria city schools are closed today and we'll update our website. northern virginia community college all campuses are closed today. parts of northern virginia were des mated after friday's violent storms and many are waking up to their third day without electricity. >> we keep hearing about falls church. close to 170,000 customers just in northern virginia need electricity still. jessica doyle joins us from arlington, where things were pretty rough there too.

good morning jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. tough situation obviously throughout the washington area. i'll give you the specifics on northern virginia. we are here on military road and quincy in arlington. right now about 50 intersections are without power. as you can see here we have power along military road. this is a typical scenario, power has been restored to this area, but you'll see we've got this emergency tape up here and the reason why, is there is this power line down along quincy. if you walk along part of this may still be electrified, so this gives us a situation where we can tell folks if you see lines down you definitely want to stay away from them. we do not know if power is in this line. this comes along to this oak tree right here, massive tree that is gown here -- down here

along quincy, blocking the roadway and depriving this particular neighborhood of power. virginia dominion is expecting to get about 80, 85% of its customers in northern virginia back with power by tuesday. folks who live in these little neighborhood communities, these people are probably going to be looking at possibly thursday for restoration and folks like myself in a neighborhood with lots of little trees down and big trees down deep in neighborhoods in northern virginia, we are looking at probably the weekend before we get our power back. in terms of your morning commute, there are still major intersection problems. arlington county has about 50 intersections without power. down from 80 over the weekend. fairfax county updated to say they have about 80 intersections out, which is going to make that commute in really a tough

situation. the state declared a state of emergency and that helped to bring crews in from other states. thirteen states provided crew workers, as well as canada. so if you see folks today working on lines, they are obviously working hard in really tough conditions with this heat, so they have got to get the trees up, put the lines back up, in some cases they are going to have to put transformers up in addition to new poles. this is going to be a long go for a lot of folks. obviously tempers are high with the weather being super hot this week. patience and in situations like this, you want to stay safe, stay away from these lines. and remember, if an intersection is out, consider that a four way stop. even if you think you have the go, look around and be sure to stop. the power crews say when you see these downed wires, assume they are live. they are dangerous and oftentimes they are blocking

traffic. >> exactly at kensington and connecticut downed lines knocked out power to traffic lights, sure to cause major problems for this morning's commute. kristen fisher joins us live. pepco says they'll have the mess cleaned up in time for the drive in to work this morning. what is the progress? >> reporter: pepco has made some progress overnight. especially at connecticut and university. they have cleaned up downed trees and power lines there. but folks, this is going to be a very ugly commute this morning. behind me, this is connecticut and can he kate -- decatur you are road. downed power lines are literally blocking the southbound lanes and trees down as well. you can see traffic trying to come through. it is a really dicey situation, driving around here when it is

this dark. no street lights whatsoever. unusual traffic patterns now and you can see only one police cruiser sitting here. right now traffic volume is pretty low. but keep in mind, we are starting to head into the morning rush, so we'll be keeping an eye on this situation and hopefully, we'll start to see crews out here cleaning up the trees. the problem had been the tree crews cannot get the trees out of the way until pepco says these power lines are no longer hot. in which case this is going to be a nightmare. back to you. 9news live's coverage of the summer storm aftermath continues with a look at what's going on in the district. >> delia joins us live from southeast dc. you have some light or is that a

construction light behind you? >> reporter: it is a construction flood light behind me. traffic lights you can see are blinking. those are out. we have many darkened houses in the area. we understand there are a number of wires and utility poles that are down. so several streets around randall circle have been all blocked off. when you come in you are going to be detoured around randall circle. police are now manning the inlet sections as the morning commute gets underway. you can take a look. that flood light is shining in the area so folks can know where they are going. we also know the army national guard has arrived and they will help police with the clean up effort and possibly, getting

residents ac mated to their new -- acclimated to their new, darker commute. i'm told this area is far improved from yesterday, lots of debris has been cleaned up. we are hearing it could be several days before power could be restored. knowing there are lots of elderly residents who live here in ward 7, back to you. crew in his northern virginia are battling the heat to get power back on to more than 17 2,000 anyonian power customers. >> ken barker is vice president of customer solutions, he joins us more with what the crews are doing. you have had a busy 24 hours, haven't you ken? >> we have. thank you for having me this

morning. our customers are suffering the heat. we understand that. we have 4200 dedicated men and women out there restoring power. we restored about 65% of the customers in northern virginia. our goal, over the next few days is to go deep and deeper into these subdivisions. you are going to see more and more crews going into these subdivisions. the key is they are going to have to rebuild facilities, new lines poles and we understand that patience is wearing thin. but we are doing everything humanly possible to get power back on. >> do you know where the concentration is? >> you know it is very widespread at this point. alexandria, mclane, herndon, we have widespread issues, catastrophic damage, big trees down. again, we are going to be

rebuilding our infrastructure in a lot of different areas in northern virginia. >> ken are you getting the kind of pressure we are hearing from pepco customers in the district and montgomery county on losing their patience and why can't you get it done faster? >> you know, we are sympathetic to our customers. we know customers want power. we get that. our focus is ongoing straight ahead, getting these lines rebuilt and believe me, every man and woman out there this morning, has one goal in mind. restore power to the railroad last customer. that is our goal. >> best of luck ken. thanks for joining us this morning. >> ken told us yesterday this is the worst nonhurricane event in the history of the utility. coverage of the widespread outages continues. >> and we are expecting an update on how pepco crews are doing. they have been working nonstop

kensington. what is going on and how much longer before it will be cleared up? >> well we are definitely good morning, everyone. we are targeting certain areas of the commute corridor, coming down in montgomery county. some of the areas are west to south central montgomery county. areas of kensington, rockville, bethesda, silver spring, it affects those. we have a lot of trees as we mentioned still in the roadway. we have some trees down, we have trees with wires in those areas. so that is a high priority. unfortunately, we didn't get as much as we needed to do. yesterday, we'll get that done today. >> numberswise where are we now? >> where we are right now and the outage on that is accurate.

236,000 customers are out. that includes about 61,122 in prince george's county. montgomery county 131,000. the district of columbia 46,000 customers. we have restored at the height of the storm 443,000 customers, we restored 48 to 49%. we have shown on tv yesterday that we have had crews coming in from texas from canada. are they helping your crews now or are they getting started this morning? >> we have had crew that his come in really within 12 to 18 hours after the storm moves through the system. i was out throughout the day yesterday. i talked to crews here from ohio, here from south carolina. we have had crew that his have been coming in. the bulk of the crews the large force that we are used to seeing will not be in place until late today, probably into tomorrow. but we do have crews from out

of town that are in place and are working now. one final question, clay. we saw the explanation from michael maxwell about the sub stations and the feeder lines before they can get into the neighborhood. i think people would like to see someone in the neighborhood talking about when they are going to at least cut back some of the tree limbs tree branches. any of the pepco workers currently on the job right now working hard. we do understand that specifically targeting getting some of these tree branches cut. >> reporter: where the pepco truck and his crews are, we are racing as quickly as possible to deenergize wires that are down to move the wires away from the trees so the tree cutting crews can get their work done.

seemingly as people have gotten around over the weekend, but signals are dark and intersections are still closed. some places you can't turn left or right and you have to go straight. you have to have a couple of option in his your pocket and be ready to be diverted on your trip. it is going to be a long hall. >> reporter: safety and patience are the two big words this morning. still you said there are three state roads affected right now. i'm going to put up a traffic so people can see and here. >> reporter: in montgomery county we have a section of connecticut avenue still blocked. a small section old georgetown road. we want to you make good eye contact with somebody at that insection, make sure you have looked at that other person, checked for pedestrians.

>> reporter: well it is not cleaned up yet. in fact not even close, pepco has made progress in some of the major intersections. this is connecticut southbound south of adams road. look at this (audio difficulty) (audio difficulty) (audio difficulty) >> we lost our audio signal with kristen. but you saw that huge tree that is in the middle of the road, blocking it. and until someone comes, and cuts that out of the roadway, it is cut down to one lane of traffic, which is going to be a mess this morning. >> that picture was connecticut southbound, heading into the district. coming from kensington southbound into the district, going to have to get crews there. >> we did hear from clay anderson from pepco earlier who said they didn't get to do what they wanted to yesterday, and

we'll talk to them and find out what happened to cause them not to get to some of the issues they said they were going to get to. one more thing clay anderson said we need to deenergize these wires. >> our coverage of the summer storm aftermath continues with a look at what's going on in the district good morning, with daybreak coming out, you can see the debris on minnesota avenue southeast in ward seven. we still have debris but they worked hard to clear many of the major trees down in the area. however it is still very sticky and we are not out of the woods yet. we have several downed utility poles and wires, which is of course causing a widespread blackout in the area.

we can see over here at this intersection on minnesota approaching the circle, as the morning commute gets underway you are going to run into a lot of these roadblocks. you can see the flashing lights of the traffic signal. some electricity has been restored but the lights aren't really back up and running yet. so police are detouring traffic and you should heed their advice, as well. so the whole area is going to be blocked off the traffic so be very patient. maryland driving into the district, several areas, even on alabama avenue at hillcrest a few miles down the road here in ward 7, also a traffic signal there some traffic signals out there as well. it is going to be a sticky commute for lots of folks and sticky because they probably

i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm mike haiduk. temperatures hopefully we are getting a break as he said just a little bit. rain is always a concern, trying to restore power is a big effort today. >> yeah and for some folks they have steady rain overnight and there is a little bit of puddling in some locations particularly toward the eastern shore. at least for this morning though, we are getting a break from that high heat. right now, most of us are in the 70s, dc downtown is 80 degrees. but for the most part we are off to a very good start. the moisture has moved on out. we will get breaks in our cloud cover. midday we'll get out of the 80s and push toward 90 degrees. most of us getting to 94 or 95. we are not expecting any severe weather. by the time we get back down in the evening hours, here is

doppler 9000. you can see this moisture all the way out in toward southern portions of maryland it will affect folks in maryland where they are getting the steadiest rainfall right now. most of us will enjoy the remainder of the afternoon, although we will have a break from the high heat, it is still going to be quite hot today. starting out, we have a little bit of an improvement and dew point only in the 60s. that is a little bit of improvement from what we have seen the last couple of days. up to 70 degrees still pulling moisture in from the south. 78 just outside of the beltway in virginia. futurecast is going to keep the clouds around for midmorning. by 11:00 or 12:00, we'll see real sunshine start to breakthrough. the in the evening hours we might see a little pop of a

stories are making news now. more than a dozen people are dead as a result of storms that moved through the state in the eastern part of the u.s. trees knocked down power lines. officials warn it may take awhile due to the sheer volume of customers with no electricity. the news is better in colorado where more people are being a loud to return home. 7000 more residents could go back to their places on sunday. the fire has been about 55% contained. hundreds of homes, though, have already been destroyed by the flames. mexico's institutional revolutionary party has been voted back into office and the party has been out of office for the last 12 years. on the inbound side of route 50 here at the bay bridge, volumes are light heading

one thing a lot of our viewers want to know, where are the pepco crews? i can't it has been more than 48 hours since the storms devastated our area. now pepco crews are starting to pop up in our neighborhood. off beach expeaf montgomery drive, crews have been working since early sunday morning. pepco president tom graham says until now their fleet of trucks and crews have been working on critical infrastructure. in other words electrical sub stations, hospitals, fire houses and police stations. >> 16 of our sub stations were out of service. we had to work on a supply line going into them because a tree knocked them out of service. >> reporter: despite that explanation pepco was taking heat from angry customers who believed utility dragged its feet in response to a power outage. >> reporter: it has been going on for a long time. we lived here almost 30 years.

>> we have people from florida, missouri and georgia and also crews from canada. we are doing everything we can right now. >> reporter: pepco's friday night target date to fully restore power, they are saying is not acceptable. we start 9news 6:00 a.m. with the latest on the epic storm aftermath. this is going to be a long week. >>
