>> 90-mile an hour violent storm. knocks the trees into our poles and wires. catches the wires, snaps the poles. and again, you get cascading. >> virginia says friday night's violent storm touched off the largest nonhurricane restoration effort in dominion's 100-year history. the damage in both northern and western virginia is catastrophic. >> and literally, to get these 60 customers, it will take two days. >> it gives me some idea of what a tremendous job this is, if you multiply this by 1,000. or whatever, you know that it's going to take a while. >> dominion has been able to restore power to more than 200,000 customers. by repairing the main lines. but now, the work is more tedious in neighborhoods like this, where 12 utility poles came down. and whole trees are entangled in power lines. >> whyn't why aren't the crews

here? we can feed your neighborhood. >> dominion says over the next few days, they will be able to give individual customer restoration times. >> i think that is crucial because i think people get frustrated because they don't know. you know, if they have some idea of well, it's going to be a day, two or three days, they can plan. >> in arlington county, peggy fox, 9 9news now. >> we did not find much of it in prince georges county. in fact, by noon, police were directing traffic at just one intersection. but the story on the roads was far different in montgomery county. and that's where we sent scott broom, who spent his whole day on the road. scott. >> well, i have some pretty disappointing news this afternoon. it's just the number of lights that are still out and the rate that they are being brought back online is really disappointing to a will the of motorists here in montgomery county. mid-morning, the county

announced 240 lights were out at intersections like this one at veers mill and broadwood in rockville. 240 right now, they just issued some new numbers. they are down to only 200. they brought 40 intersections back online. they have 90 of them staffed by officers right now. here's how some motorists reacted to coming to these four way stops today. >> i'm a little nervous. >> one go, one go, and i go. but when i go, they still -- >> the lucky ones had portable stop signs standing in. >> do you trust the other guy? >> i guess. >> at 1:30 this afternoon, county police reported 240 traffic lights still out. and only enough officers to direct traffic at 90 of those intersections. >> what is helping is officers out there in the boiling sun and they are doing a great job. >> despite endless warnings to

treat dark intersections as four-way stops, many motorists simply breeze through intersections like this one. on kenilworth boulevard in berwin heights. busy trying to restore power and traffic sanity, this crew in takoma park. all right, so the pepco guys are out there. i have seen a few of the lights come back online. it's happening so slowly. 240 intersections in montgomery. out earlier today, now down to only 200. so looks like tomorrow morning and overnight tonight, more of this four way stop signs at an intersection that should be control bid a light. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> we all know the one utility everybody loves to hate in times like these, it is pepco. >> bruce leshan is live in rockville with more on their efforts tonight. and bruce, oh man, you got a lot of damage behind you.

>> yeah, what's amazing is that we have seen more of these guys. these are tree workers and they have been working to get this huge tree off this poor guy's house on old georgetown road. but the other thing that is surprising here is some of the folks that have been the harshest crickets of pepco over the years. the politicians, the regulators, and so forth, right now are given pepco time to deal with this surprise hurricane force storm. >> can't do anything until pepco comes through. even the verison guy was waiting on a crew. they are showing remarkable patience in the face of adversity. brad lost his home to a tree, so he's willing to offer pepco a break. >> i mean, they are doing the best they can. it's a tough situation. there's a tree on a house. >> is it too early for you to judge their performance? >> it is too early.

>> montgomery county council president, roger berliner has been one of pepco's fiercest critics. he's waiting to see on this storm. >> one is their effort to acquire additional crews. when do they make that effort? >> find pepco $1 million for bad maintenance and excessive outages that took way too long to fix. the chairman is withholding judgment, too. >> do you think that they are doing what they need to do? >> we knew it was coming. certainly had no warning it was going to resolve. >> no warning, but there's going to be an after action report. if the pse finds that pepco did not do the job adequately, it will fine it and fine it painfully. back to you. >> mostly the pain is ours

right now, bruce. thank you. now in d.c., mayor vince gray has strong words for pepco. 41,000d.c. residents still in the dark and the temperatures are up and the tempers are soaring as well. >> they need to move faster. pepco's pace of restoring power to me anyway is unacceptable and the speed of their response has been disappointing and how many times have we been through this before? >> mayor gray says he is anxious to meet with the governors of maryland and virginia as well as local county executives to come up with a plan of action to hold pepco accountable. pepco's time line to restore power is not good enough. something that the county executive in montgomery county said as well. >> we can't say it enough. if you come to an intersection and there's no power, treat it as a four-way stop. let's get to monica in the traffic center. she has more on the roads. >> i'm glad i'm not the only one telling people that. that's exactly what you need to

do. if you are planning into montgomery county, you'll have between 200, 240, 250 signal lights. fairfax, ant 80. and the district about 55. so, patience again. you're going to need that. i know it's still hot outside and tempers are flairing. so try and be nice when you approach an intersection, give way to the right. now we'll take you over to a couple of problems around town. first of all, if you have planning to head into virginia, you have the gw parkway. i'll get to that in a second. first, let me tell you that hov restrictions are lifted through tuesday on 66 only. you do have hov restrictions on 95. 395, and 66 outside the beltway. also now, the gw parkway southbound closed between the cia and parkway. why you ask? a huge tree down. park police are there. they are diverting traffic. so keep that in mind. closed at pennsylvania avenue with the problem here as well. you'll be diverted there.

you can get back on and a last live look. at least in virginia, all the lanes are open. it's just going to be that slow traffic and that's traffic. back to you guys. >> all right, on top of all of the power problems, we still have to deal with the heat and humidity and that's why our 9 weather team declared today a code yellow alert day. topper is out on the weather terrace to tell us more. >> let's talk about the numbers for today. we hit the mid 90s. no records. this isn't like record setting heat, but it's hot. 95 and 79. when 79 is the low, that's uncomfortable. averages are 88 and 70. 101 set in 1898. we haven't had time to talk about this, but we are almost 7 inches below for the annual rain fall average and looking at potential fire danger. keep that in mind. keep a hose ready. 92 downtown. 90 in manassas. 90 at andrews. you factor in the humidity, the

back on 9news now. slowly, but surely, crews are gaining control over the waldo canyon fire near colorado

springs. it is now more than half contained thanks to the some 1500 firefighters who have been keeping those flames in check. this fire already ranks as the most destructive in colorado history. it destroyed nearly 350 homes. >> and tonight, we finally know what caused a navy jet to crash into a virginia beach apartment complex back in april. the navy says that plane had a rare dual engine malfunction. no one died, but seven people were injured and 27 apartments were damaged. no disciplinary action will be taken against the two pilots that were flying that jet. still ahead, we are not the only area to get hit hard. we're going to take a lock at some of the other damage.

the intense storms this weekend stretched beyond our area. last night, the weather hit to our south taking out trees and power poles in kentucky.

at least 50 trees were knocked down in fayette county alone. and closer to richmond, the national weather service is confirming a tornado touched down saturday night. the twister hit near mechanicsville just after 8:00 p.m. and it stayed on the ground for about 4 1/2 miles. fortunately, no one was hurt and few structures were damaged. another impact from the storm, cell phone service. several companies including verison and sprint had their cell sites go down during friday night's storm. tonight, crews are working to restore service to all of their customers. ken spent his day in the city to see how people are surviving without everything. no phone, no power. they still got their sanity, though, right ken? >> well, even then, it's starting to ware thin. a lot of folks out here in ward 8 say they don't have the kind of money to be going off to hotels or to be buying generators to deal with all of this. this is what they resorted to. take a look. they are having a good time

right now. they realize the adults they aren't supposed to be cracking fire hydrants, but they are taking matters into their own hands to try and stay cool out here. >> all throughout anacostia. >> there's no hope. we don't have any hope. we don't have anything to look forward to. and it's really disgusting. i'm tired. i'm disabled. >> many other places, ward 8 got hit hard with downed trees and toppled power lines. these residents, is this day three of battling sweltering heat without any electricity. >> something like that. >> heat and humidity -- >> so far, utility repair trucks have been absent off of good hope road. even worse, these residents have had no help from district leaders or emergency personnel. people like robert and his neighbors are simply trying to survive. >> we are sweating, can't

think straight. >> this is killing me. >> he has been living off of what few things he has been able to stash into his cooler. >> you can't buy a whole lot of stuff, because once it melts, you have to refill it. >> ice and food is hard to come by. then you don't know where their next meal will come from. >> our food has gone bad, so we don't have any food in the house to eat or feed the children. >>kevin: pets are feeling >> now they are concerned children and the elderly will begin to fall ill before power is restored here. >> few have abandoned their homes and gone elsewhere, but many more don't have anywhere to go and they are begging pepco to step up their response. >> you're not giving us no hope. nothing to look forward to. and it's tiresome. >> right now at the residents of this neighborhood off of 14

combined, a couple thunderstorms south down towards charlottesville and a few clouds toward pittsburgh. right now we don't see anything developing. i'll keep the chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the forecast for another couple of hours. 92 downtown. 92 in rockville. we haven't talked about 80s. 89 in great falls. 86 in fairfax. and 89 in springfield. that's really pretty nice. because the air mass is dry, temperatures will fall at lower levels tonight. especially in the suburbs. 90s with us all week. warm tonight, maybe a thunderstorm. tomorrow, another copy and paste day. and big storms are possible on the fourth and probably hotter on wednesday. partly cloudy, warm. maybe a thunderstorm. almost comfortable. low 65 to 75. so 65 in the suburbs is pretty decent. now tomorrow morning, partly cloudy, warm. 70 to 90 by lunchtime. air quality in the unhealthy range. that's not unusual. by afternoon, partly cloudy and hot. better chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow.

high temperatures near 95. winds southwesterly. we'll break it down. you know, 65 to 75 to start is okay. hot by noon. 85 to 90. then by evening, 92 to 96 and maybe a thunderstorm. next three days, our 9 weather alert code stay yellow. yellow 95 on tuesday. 97 on the fourth. a little hotter on the fourth and 96 on thursday. next seven days. look like this. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 90s on friday. upper 90s. almost 100 on saturday. and looking at temperatures holding in the 90s right on through the week. good news is, maybe by next monday, we might be in the low 90s with showers and thunderstorms. only relief will be afternoon storms that. ky be heavy. >> yeah. all right, thank you, topper. well, he didn't win a major, but he did win a big tournament, his own. >> you would think he would win his own tournament, plus the only player to have three wins. he's getting there. tiger woods moves to the top of

to congressional country club this weekend and no doubt pga and network folks are happy about that. whether people tune in to see a victory or to see whether he would implod again. i'm sure they don't care. ratings for sunday's final were up 188% from last year. and about 50,000 people filled congressional to see tiger go stroke to stroke with beau. this is tiger's third victory of the year. the only pga tour that can say that. second most pga tour wins of all time. >> i'm so proud of how everyone came together and got it done. and then, you know, again to honor all the military servicemen and women was fantastic. all 30,000 tickets were given out and everyone came out. it was a fantastic week. >> apparently the victory got him another milestone. he tweeted, thanks for all the

tweets, great week at at&t national. someone told me i got to 100 worldwide wins. pretty cool. the great weekend. now men's outdoor track and field will stay at the university of maryland at least for another year. they were able to raise the necessary funding. however, other teams weren't so lucky. men's outdoormens and track, and acrobatics and tumbling are among seven sports discontinued because of budget constraints. washington nationals getting some recognition this week, three players head into the 2012 all-star game. the all mighty righty makes his debut at the midsummer classic. he is joined by geo and shortstop, ian desmond. that game is july 10 in kansas city. rookie fee no , phenom was not selected. he earned a spot in the all- star game. he is among players that fans
