we decided to issue that because so many people in your families we be outside enjoying the fireworks and barbecuing and some of you could be impacted by some of these storm which could be strong or severe. right now live doppler 9000 hd is fairly quiet. we do not have any severe thunderstorm warnings in our area. up north in pennsylvania that, yellow, yeah, some warnings in bedford and somerset. right now between hagerstown and frederick we have a little cell which is not severe, but shepherdstown and walkersville you're looking at a decent cell going through. these storms are having a harder time organizing into anything severe. that's good. also warrenton. we did have a severe thunderstorm warning earlier in fauquier and prince william, but those storms have fallen by low severe thunderstorm criteria. we'll talk more about these storms and what you can expect coming up a bit later. the other big story, day five after the epic storm that

left more than a million people without power. here's where we stand now. the numbers are going down. pepco reports it still has 39,400 people in the dark. bge is still looking to restore power to more than 79,000 customers and dominion virginia power reports it still has more than 21,000 customers in dark in northern virginia. a planned independence day parade in the cabin john neighborhood of bethesda turned into a pepco protest today instead. scott broom is standing by live with more. scott? >> reporter: that's because here in cabin john they're among the 39,000 in maryland that pepco hasn't provided power to. here's a typical scene, big old branch still hanging from the power lines and the neighbors complained. there's a huge communication breakdown with pepco. pepco just told me yes, in fact, their robocall script is misleading and here's some of the reactions of the people i talked to today at that protest parade.

in cabin john residents marched with patriotically themed protest signs during the annual 4th of july parade down macarthur boulevard, give me liberty or give me pepco? >> we just got an e-mail saying that the power had been restored in cabin john. half of cabin john is still out. doesn't make sense, does it? >> reporter: nearby in the green acres section bethesda residents have taken to posting signs to direct crews into the neighbor. >> we've been told multiple times it actually is back on and there isn't a problem and there's never been a work crew that's even come to look at it. >> reporter: the signs may have worked. a pepco scout showed up shortly after they went up. so that's what it's down to this 4th of july. you got people carrying signs and one of the reasons is they just have absolutely. >> confidence that their phone calls and postings on the web and the electronic applications is getting through to pepco because it seems like when

pepco calls them knack they have the information wrong. again tonight -- back they have the information wrong. again tonight a pepco spokesperson says their robo script can be misleading, not untruthful, because it tells you that it's reporting the power is back on in your general area. people think that means it's back on at their house and call pepco again. here's the bottom line. you have to continue to call the utility while your power is out. it's the feedback that they get to everybody if their crew is in the area and you're still out, you got to continue to call for all those people still out of power. it's not much of a holiday today for a family whose teen- age son had a freak accident with a pepco power line. andrea mccarren hit the streets again to hear your power struggle stories and joins us now live at old georgetown road. >> reporter: just like scott

has seen, you drive across the area and we are still seeing a lot of massive trees like this one bringing power lines down with them and in neighbors where utility trucks arrive to the very first time -- for the very first time today they were sure a welcome sight. five days after the storm utility trucks and tree trimming crews descended on the wingate neighborhood of bess da where residents' patience had run -- bethesda where residents' patience had run thin. >> it was very frustrating to me they would leave a situation potentially life endangering. >> reporter: the developmentally challenged teen was flung to the ground on his back. >> i was just so glad he wasn't hitting it at a higher rate, because i'm afraid he would have been decapitated and that was what i told pepco on the phone was, this kind of wire over a side walk could easily lead to someone suffering

something much worse. >> but still fivo's neck is terribly scarred, bike brake detached and a pedal broken. >> very frustrated with their in different response and their lackadaisical comment about go see a lawyer. >> the fact it had been rotted days lawyer add insult to injury. >> we found out, in fact, pepco closed out the trouble report they had gotten monday and this took place tuesday. >> reporter: remarkably when jeffrey hoe hen called -- cohen called pepco they refused to take his report unless he gave the account information of the homeowner that had the downed wire, something he didn't know. today there is tape and an orange barrel marking that downed wire because the montgomery county fire department responded in 20 minutes to the quo hen family's call. they responded -- to the cohen's family call.

they responded to something yet pepco has failed to address. the refrigerators getting cold again and the house is cooling down, the happy message we received from a resident whose power was restored around 6:38 a.m. today and the kids are as happy as can be. they can use the computer and watch television again. northern virginia still has nearly 18,000 homes in the dark tonight. dominion power crews have been getting into the residential streets, but even some high priority cases are waiting. surae chinn reports from a senior high rise be still waiting for the lights to come back on. >> reporter: dominion power says they're working on the last remaining outages, but some cases they have to cut down and remove big and small trees to get to the power lines. crews are feverishly working to get the lights back on in northern virginia. murray land is facing a sixth

night up in his seventh floor apartment building at lake ann fellow ship house in reston. he walked all the way down to get some answers. >> are you here to fix the elevator? >> i'm sorry, i'm not. i was fixing a phone. >> reporter: murray's disappointment gives way to a glimmer of hope because crews are nearby working on their lights. >> got up this morning and all i was doing was coughing. >> reporter: murray suffers from asthma. many of the other 262 senior residents suffer from a medical condition. >> i can't leave here. i'ding dead. >> i hope they get it fixed today is all i can say. >> it's all he can think about. no power or water is not only a drain on him, but his two horses. >> well, just shot. a lot of sweat comes off and it's just miserable. >> he is et cetera since he's been staying at home caring for his animals. -- and that's because he's been

general john allen led the ceremony alongside multi- national troops. he says afghanistan is an inspiration for those seeking to overcome oppression. after his address allen joined others to celebrate with a piece of cake designed as a u.s. flag. here in washington last weekend's violent storm did not prevent a july 4th tradition in upper northwest. the palisades neighborhood held its 46th annual independence day parade this morning, plenty of music, politicians, colorful costumes. the parade on black arthur boulevard was followed by a free -- on macarthur boulevard was followed by a free picnic. coming up the sexual assault and search for a predator in arlington, more just ahead. hey america, even though

trail. >> reporter: arlington county police say the sexual assault happened here on the four mile run trail around 7:30 p.m. last night. this is near the glenn carlin park entrance on third street and arlington. a female jogger was on the trail. she ran past the man and on the way back he attacked. >> he steps in front of her, brandishes a knife. she's listening to her ipod with earbuds in, subject say is going with a knife right there and -- saying something with a knife right there and our victim takes out her earbuds and realizes she's become a victim of the crime. he takes her off the path. >> reporter: police say the suspect is a hispanic male between 5' 5 and 6 feet tall, short black hair, brown eyes, no facial hair, an extremely small head and a high pitched voice and a green t-shirt with the word george on it. >> we're used to being on the trail, but i usually stay on

during daylight hours. >> reporter: after the assault the victim ran back to her home and went to the hospital. the hospital contacted arlington police. police are now working with the victim to develop a composite drawing of the suspect. they expect to have that ready over the next few days. >> if you have any information on the identity of the suspect, you want to call arlington county police. the number is 703-228-4198. president obama celebrated the nation's birthday with a nationalization ceremony at the white house. he was joined by homeland security secretary janet napolitano who administered the oath of allegiance to more than two dozen active u.s. service members. the president called the ceremony the perfect way to celebrate the nation's birthday. service members and their families are being treated to a concert, barbecue and later tonight the big bang, the fireworks show from the south lawn of the white house. tens of thousands of people are gathering in washington for

tonight's concert and, of course, the star spangled fireworks program that will follow. kristin fisher is down on the mall where the excitement is growing. >> reporter: people are excited for the fireworks, but they're also excited for this sun to go down. tell you, what there's a lot of people, but not nearly as there would normally be just three hours before the fireworks. it has to be because of this brutally hot heat weave dealt with all day long. the truck through the national mall has handed out 100,000 fans. i've got two and you really need them few of been here all day, especially for these folks who have been camped up under this tree since the gates opened at 10 a.m. they brought gallons of water, coolers full of food, chairs, blankets, umbrellas to shield them from the sun, almost everything you're allowed to bring to the mall for the 4th of july fireworks, but there's

a lot of things you cannot bring out here. u.s. police sergeant paul brooks breaks down some of the do's and don't's. >> we don't want any type of alcoholic beverage, 9 of fireworks or weapons. -- any type of fireworks or weapons. everyone has to go through an is being's point to gain entry on-- access point to gain entry onto the mall and the backpacks are subject to search. >> reporter: the metro stations, myth myth and -- smithsonian and triangle are growing increasingly crowded. your best bet is to have a cab drop you off or take the metro. let's hope we don't get some rain. if we get some showers and some lightning, u.s. park police say they do have some plans in place to evacuate the national mall if need be.

around the fredericksburg area as well and also north around hagerstown. you can see as we zoom in on here warrenton getting a little bit of a thunderstorm as well, but again no severe warnings in effect right now. look at our risk for severe weather, slight risk is shaded in yellow here which includes the d.c. area, points north and west, the main threats being damaging wind gusts and hail. the heat is the other big weather story this evening, heat advisory until 9:00 for the entire d.c. metro area where it is really cooking out there. here's a look at the heat index. it feels like 102 in downtown when you factor in the humidity, 105 in culpeper, leesburg still feeling hot at 110 and the heat won't get any better. our live look at the live weather cam brought to you by michael and son. we've got blue skies, beautiful shot of the white house, temperatures in downtown in the upper 90s. the clouds are starting to move in as we'll see some storms

town. >> the 4th of july celebrations are underway, but there were plenty of fireworks early on at nats park. the weather was conducive for the long ball today and the nats took advantage. four home runs against one of the best pitching rotations in the league. the fire trucks rocking the american flag, fans enjoying the festivities out there. edwin jackson getting off to a rocky start, had to wake up, giving up three runs in the 1st inning. normally this would be a problem the nats couldn't overcome but not today. the nats' bats were hot. jonathan solano, ryan zimmerman, mike morse and rick ankiel all going deep today taking advantage of the early start time. the nats crushed the giants the second day in a row 9-4 the final. there's something about the 4th of july that just brings out the best in ryan zimmerman. this is his walkoff homer back in 2006.
