happy fourth. as usual, the focus was the nationally televise the wire, display at the washington monument where a small but enthusiastic crowd celebrated independence day. and gary was in the middle of that and joins us now what it was all like. reporter: leslie, come

on. it's the fourth of july. the most famous fireworks in the whole country right here at the washington monument. if you are all i seen that before, you are a long way from the people who longed to be here. longed to be here, like the family of pakistan native who became a citizen in 1992. >> we came all the way from los angeles. so we came to see the fireworks. we are love so much so we decided we need to go there to washington and see the fireworks. >> it was hot in the 90s and if you think those fans made a difference. >> not really. i mean i barely used it. i have been sweating a lot. >> eric parker brought his daughters here from southeast of family tradition. >> i have been here when i was a kid. i wanted them to experience what i experienced being a kid and seeing the fireworks. >> if you are visiting d.c. you want to remember this moment.

>> it's a great day. july fourth. very excited to be here. it's just a lot of fun. especially a finale like this. to quote the crowd, wow. i mean, come on, the fourth in d.c. the crowd wasn't huge but on america's birthday where else do you want to be? >> no better place but here. thank you for that. and we will have a lot more firework coming up for you in just a bit. we have been following some severe weather throughout the evening. we are now from the weather center with an update. >> we have several severe thunderstorm warnings in the area including fairfax, loudoun counties this evening. the good news is all those

warnings have expired. let's go straight to live doppler 9000hd. a couple of areas of showers out to the west of us and in warrenton around interstate 66 we have a little cell here that's producing some decent amounts of rain through manassas and in centerville. overall it's a fairly quiet night for the rest of us this evening as these showers and storms come to an end. these storms came through and got some good lightning. i will show you a picture of that in just a minute. i want to talk about the storms we saw going through right around manassas and through where the rainfall was pretty good. a few storm reports and not a whole lot but a couple. basically we hit a thunderstorm wind damage this evening. multiple trees were down near north frederick pike and us-50 from strong thunderstorm winds so we got that and also some reports of hail as well earlier this evening. almost a quarter sized hail. check out this photo we got

this evening from steve city, virginia. thanks to ricky dunn. he got this evening. that's great shot. tomorrow morning temperatures will cool down into the 70s. by 9:00 already well into the 80s. i think a lot of us can make it to the triple digit mark. we will start a heat wafn. i will let you know how long that will last when we come back. all right. now to the latest power outage numbers in the aftermath of that epic storm. pepco and dominion virginia say that 90% of their customers now have service. and pepco says they got about 1600 outages in the district. 27,000 in montgomery county. and 1,000 in prince george's county. dominion, virginia, reports over 11,000 outages in the northern virginia area. bge reports 270 customers with no power in montgomery. and 3800 in prince george's. and some echos says there are

five people without power all of them in prince george's county. it was just another grueling day of work for power company employees who had to deal with the heat and the humidity as they restored power to thousands of increasingly frustrated customers. we are joined now with a look at how things are going on the front lines of fight to fully restore the area's electricity. >> if you ask for people who got their power back today, it was a very successful fourth of july. but if you ask those still in the dark, this was not a holiday to remember. >> well, it's just hot. just a lot of sweat comes off and just miserable. >> weather fit for neither manor beast. at least not without air conditioning. so says northern virginia resident barry kohl'sten. hoping for his sake and the sake of his two horses that his power comes back on sometime soon. >> i just hope they get it fixed today. that's all i can say. >> he isn't the only hot and frustrated d.c. area resident these days.

five days after a powerful storm left a trail of sweltering dark houses in its wake. tens of thousands of people are still without power. in virginia, maryland and the nation's capital. >> it's aggravating. >> today as power companies continue to bring more and more customers back online, some of those still without power are making their voices heard about the lack of service. in maryland, some of those who marched in the july fourth parade said there wasn't much to celebrate this holiday. >> at some point public utilities got to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. >> silver spring resident staged a one man sit-not the middle of history littered street. vowing not to leave until pepco gets the message. >> that is correct and i'm going to stay here until we get some results. >> in fairness to pepco, residents of that silver spring neighborhood say half a dozen crews have been out to survey the damage over the past few days but so far nothing has

been fixed. 9 news now. >> thank you. a scar is one thing but electrocution is a completely different story. >> this father is furious tonight. his 15-year-old developmentally challenged son was riding his bike on the sidewalk yesterday when the father says a dangling power line caught him by the next and flung him back off his bike. when jeffrey called pepco he said he learned the utility knew about the problem on saturday and closed out the ticket on monday without a repair. the fire department eventually marked down wire with an orange barrel. we got breaking news right now. four people shot in northwest d.c. it happened just a short time ago near the area of 100 gallanten street. we are live on the street and what do we know? reporter: well, let me go ahead and get you caught up with the latest details. i just got off the phone with a police person who says the group of four people were shot earlier today. all of them are still alive and

initially there were reports that one of them was fatally wounded. according to police at this hour that's not the case. let's show you where this happened. happened behind this shopping center along the 5,000 block of first street northwest. police say two of the victims are teenage boys younger than 18 years old. the other two are believed to be adult aged young men. police chief says two of the victims are suffering from minor injuries and the other two according to her have more serious injuries. the extent we don't know at this hour. investigators say the victims were near some apartments where they were shot by a group who walked up to them and opened fire. motive behind the violence is being investigated. d.c. police say they are keeping a large crime scene out here until they get to the bottom of this. while we were doing the preliminary investigation we are looking for anything that may lead us to a -- from the suspects which way they went. anything that may have been discarded. so it's a big scream scene right now -- crime scene right now.

the three or four blocks will remain closed for the next couple of hours. they are not announcing any arrests in connection to the shooting but they are saying police were able to stop several people of interest in this area. those people are being questioned and talked to right now. a very active police scene out here and are asking anyone with information out here to give them a call. they are hoping maybe a neighbor or somebody saw something could give them the tip they need to close this investigation out here. live in northwest d.c. 9 news now. thank you. and more gunfire to tell you about in sandy spring, maryland, a deadly shooting at a popular restaurant called urban barbecue. according to police, here is how it went down a man came to the restaurant and pulled out a gun and showed it to customer. when police arrived he was on the patio. police say the man refused to follow their commands. the situation escalated and two officers opened fire killing the man. the shooting is now under investigation. in campaign 2012 news, president obama and mitt romney

back on 9 news, the people who ran mexico's presidential election last weekend will open half the ballot boxes and recount the vote. presiewmed loser alleges some funny business at most of the polling stations. in colorado springs, good news in the fight against the waldo canyon fire. with help from rainfall, firefighters now predict they can contain the whole thing by sunday. police tonight are searching for a rapist in arlington. a woman was attacked while jogging on the four mile run bike trail near glen carmen park in arlington last night. she told police a man with a knife dragged her off the trail and sexually assaulted her around 8:00. she then ran home and drove herself to the hospital. the suspect is described as hispanic, about 140 pounds. the victim said he has a small head, short black hair, brown

eyes, high pitched voice and that he spoke limited english. many communities in hour area were forced to cancel their fourth of july festivities today because of friday's epic storms. in colorado, personal fireworks were banned because of wildfires and dry weather. but public fireworks displays were called 06 in dozens of states as a result of record high heat. dried out land is providing fuel for potential fires. in other parts of the country, cash is the big concern. in red bank, new jersey, officials said they couldn't do their fireworks display and it's the first time this has happened in 53 years. little farther north in new rochelle, new york, the city canceled its display but sent out a call to the community asking for donations. and one woman wrote a $50,000 check. >> just -- it felt good and from the moment that i called to do it, i have felt nothing but joy. and i knew it was right. i still know it's right.

and i saw the energy shift in the people and excitement. and you have to have that. >> boy, she is generous. and i bet she made a lot of people happy. >> yeah. it's really great. especially on the fourth of july when families look forward to celebrating. >> what's fourth of july without firework. >> exactly. and really glad a lot of folks here in d.c. did get to see those firework go off. >> without the severe weather. >> the severe weather holding off until after the fireworks. and it really did and it fell apart by the time it got to the d.c. metro area. we are only seeing showers out to the west of town. that's the good news. of course, some people did still see some of the storms impact maybe some of their later outdoor activity. here is a look at our michael and sun weather camera. the temperature is still warm out. there 89 at this hour under mostly cloudy conditions. dew points, check that out. that's in the 70s.

that's some oppressive humidity. live doppler 9000hd. fairly quiet. we have a few showers out to the west but no severe thunderstorm warnings so that's the good news and things should be fairly quiet. you can see we had some decent cell go through but now looking at showers through warrenton, winchester and out to just north of harrisonburg. this is light shower activity and we saw a little decent cell go through manassas and next toville. now we were looking at light rain for most locations. okay, heat advisory, we had one earlier today until 9:00. will not be surprised if they issued another one. the national weather service issued one tomorrow. there is one for places out east of town toward the shore and to the coast locations. it still feels warm. feels like 96 degrees in downtown. where it's rained in winchester and mayonnaiseitous it's cooled down into the lower 70s. it's a warm night out there. manassas in the lower 70s. heat continues one more day for

thursday and heat advisory is possible if not likely. very hot through saturday. and then i want to say you should limit your time outdoors. drink plenty of fluids and don't forget your pets. you will limit their time outside because they will have a hard time with this heat. the thunderstorms ending. lows will be in the 70s. tomorrow morning mostly sunny and warm and muggy. air quality is code orange which means unhealthy for our sensitive groups. we will start out in the 70s and 80s. and by the afternoon, oh, yeah, another hot one. and isolated thunderstorm possible. highs around 100 degrees. in downtown, we will get to the triple digit mark. same thing for college park. 99 for fairfax. arlington, springfield also 100 degrees. here is your next three days. code yellow because of the heat and the chance for a stray storm tomorrow. 97 for friday. still very hot. saturday 102. that's our best chance to really challenge those records. here is your next seven days.

on sunday so hot in the mid-90s with a chance for scattered showers and storms. a cold front comes through and i think we will get a break from the heat on monday. temperatures in the mid-80s with more showers and storms and tuesday and wednesday we should settle out into the upper 80s. boy, the next few days will be hot go to the pool if you can or go watch a movie. >> all right. sounds good. the nationals really show the fans today why they are at the top of their game again. >> again. they really did. they have been hitting so well lately. i don't know what it is. i don't know if it's the heat. the nationals celebrating an extra special fourth of july. a look back at the fireworks today at nats park. plus a first for the olympics. a double amputee will compete

it was an early day for the nationals and their fans. 11:00 a.m.

start but that meant an earlier day for their opponents. the san francisco giants. it was 8:00 in the morning back home. both teams did need a little extra time to wake up. but in the end the nats took advantage of their weary opponent. it was a beautiful morning for some baseball over 35,000 fans filled nats park. pick this up in the bottom of the fourth. game tied at three. jonathan solano knocks it out of the park. over the scoreboard. next inning, brian zimmerman knocks it out and followed by mike morse behind him with one of his own to make it 7-3 nats. they aren't done yet. in the eighth, rick ankiel gets in on the action. two-run shot. nats pound the giants for the second straight day 9-4 the final. bryce harper making his case for the all-star game. just a few more hours left to vote. today he was two for four and last count he was second in the fan voting for the final spot in the national league roster.
