12:02 pm
after several hot days without power. and then those sympathetic with crews working long hours to fix a big problem. >> it seems odd to me though that we live in washington, d.c. metropolitan area which is you know, a big city, a big you know -- there's -- and we have to go five whole days without power. even though the storm was very severe. i can understand that. but i mean things have to be tightened up. >> reporter: many folks in the neighborhood are rejoicing but there are just a couple of folks who are still suffering. >> it's a big job. it's an unfortunate situation there but i'm a cancer survivor so it's hard. yeah. >> reporter: this neighbor lives just up the street from the romanos and is hoping relief will come her way soon. many residents in the kensington neighborhood are sick and elderly. >> i have a mechanical microvalve and what's the other

thing called? pacemaker, they told me it wasn't a priority. >> reporter: but for donna, the hum of the ac cures that frustration at least for now. even the romanos' three dogs are breathing a bit easier too. in kensington, delia goncalves, 9news now. we are going to have another scorcher today and we are under a heat alert so let's get right to howard for details. howard? >> jc, heat advisory went into effect a little while ago. stays until 8:00 tonight for everybody east of the blue ridge. and frederick, maryland you're not in it but you're still going to be plenty hot. just not hot enough. to fall under the advisory category. temperatures already soaring at the noon hour. 97 degrees. you know we're just five degrees shy of the record for the day? 102 set? 1999. it's 95 at the naval air station. easton 93. a little bit cooler but still low 90s now in the shenandoah valley. when you factor in the humidity. well, the heat index values are pushing 105 up at bwi and 99
12:04 pm
here in town. and this is why we've got the heat advisory the combination of heat and humidity. something we've been dealing with for days and it looks like we're going to get some more heat at least for two more days high heat 678 thunderstorms this morning moving out the west virginia, kentucky. strong to severe ones, that watch goes until 7:00 although we'll have to see. see the clouds here? little boundaries and they can be focal points for other storms to form and with the heat we have anything that pops this afternoon and i expect isolated ones could be strong to severe. the forecast for the rest of the afternoon, looking at it we're going into the upper 90s at 3:00. i think we're going to top out around 100, 101. some may get to 102. 92 by 9:00 with the isolated storms this afternoon many this evening. kent 97 already. jc when i come back we're going to talk about saturday but some relief in the long-range. jc? >> thank you howard. we're now going to turn our attention to the 2012
12:05 pm
presidential race. president obama is getting on a bus that will take him through two battleground states. the president is campaigning in towns with big auto plants that helped him win in 2008. danielle nottingham has more now from the white house. >> reporter: president obama headed to ohio to kick off his two state betting on america bus tour. first stop? the small northern ohio manufacturing town of momi. >> i think he's been just a great president because you know like he had so much to contend with. it's not how far you get. it's where you start. >> reporter: like much of northern ohio, high unemployment has hit momi hard. the president is there to make the case that he's done all he can to help the economy. but recent economic numbers are making it hard. in june, manufacturing shrunk for the first time in three years. it's filing an unfair trade
12:06 pm
complaint against china too for tariffs china is imposing on u.s. cars and trucks. republican presidential hopeful mitt romney has been talking tough on china. and he tells cbs news as long as he continues to talk about the economy, he will win in november. >> the president's going on the bus tour. he's got no new answers. all he's saying is let's go government some more. >> reporter: romney is siding with other republicans on the president's health care reform law. >> with the supreme court has a final word. and their final word is that obamacare is tax. >> reporter: he'll be hammering that message when he gets back on the campaign trail. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. >> tomorrow, we could see more bad economic numbers because the june jobs numbers will be released. later today, we could learn the identity of the man shot and killed by montgomery county police.
12:07 pm
this started at the urban barbecue restaurant on route 108 in sandy spring yesterday. according to police, the man stormed the restaurant, whipped out a gun and that's when someone called police. police say the man refused to follow their commands and that's when shots rang out. >> at some point, he may have made a move to go back in into the restaurant -- into the restaurant. there was a confrontation and two officers discharged chair service -- their service weapons. >> medics rushed the man to the hospital and he later died. officials believe that he was in his 60s and he may have had a tie to the restaurant. virginia railway express is expanding. the "washington examiner" reports that the commuter rail system is finalizing plans to go further south. the plan right now is to open the station in spotsylvania county next year and it will go in an area called the crossroads site along route 17.

12:12 pm
12:13 pm
12:14 pm

12:15 pm
that's 53% off. living social is hosting the event at 918 f street in collaboration with the executive chef at founding farmers. if you have an offer you've seen or if you're a local merchant with a deal for our viewers, i'd love to hear from you on facebook. i'm jessica doyle. 9news now. we have breaking news from sanford, florida. george zimmerman, the man who killed teenager trayvon martin, can be released from jail while he awaits trial. just moments ago, a judge granted bond for a second time for george zimmerman. bail was set at $1 million. a rare lobster caught off the coast of ocean city is settling into its new home here in washington. after two weeks of observation and a bill of good health, toby, the rare blue american lobster, was lowered into a tank at the national aquarium in northwest washington. aquarium officials say visitors are already clawing for a chance to see toby.
12:16 pm
>> we're really interest today see how he does on the exhibit. you know how he interacts with the other animals and you know just anxious for folks to come down and be able to see him. >> toby will share the tank with other creatures found on the atlantic coast. his blue pigment is the result of a genetic mutation which happens once in every two million lobsters. the lobstermen who hauled him in last month decided to donate him to the national acquire numb. >> a good addition. >> i'd like to go see him. >> a nice day to go over there. it's air conditioned inside because outside not air conditioned at all. >> going to be hot. hot. hot. >> going to get hotter. saturday is going to be the worst of the heat days. and we're going to have some problems with that but then next week things are going to get much more comfortable around here. only 80s by monday but we have to get there first. we have the heat advisory in effect until 8:00 for everybody east of the blue ridge. the day planner and temperatures will be soaring
12:17 pm
toward the low 100s i think. i think the numbers are off by a couple of degrees, i think 101. 102 not out of the question. maybe 103 the way we're doing. we have northwesterly winds and already 97 here in town. maybe some isolated strong storms also this afternoon. better chance of that is going to be west of i-95 for the strong ones and you can see quiet east just some radar clutter here but to the west we have some strong storms coming through west virginia now. these are strong to severe and in fact the severe thunderstorm watch there until 7:00. as far as the records to beat for the afternoon, all these were set back in 1999. 99 at dulles and 103 in martinsburg. we can make a run at a couple of the numbers the at least tying them and you can look at the current readings. not so much in martinsburg only 90. but baltimore is 96 and five degrees from tying the record and it's noon. we have a lot of time to get baked here with the sunshine
12:18 pm
for the afternoon. temperatures, when you factor in the humidity well feeling more like 99 in town and 105 at bwi. but the heat index values only in the low 90s in the shenandoah valley and that's why you're not in the heat advisory. on the michael & son weather camera here at noon, looking outside what do we have? we have sunshine and plenty of it. feels like 99-degrees with the temperature of 97 and a knot west wind at 13. the relative humidity is 34% and the air is slightly drier is it takes less energy to heat. when you have moisture in the air it takes more to heat it up. so that's another reason i think we could get toward the records this afternoon. big ridge of high pressure in the middle of the country. talked about it the last couple of days that really hasn't moved much. underneath that the record highs the heat trying to expand east to us and we're going to be dealing with it the next two, three days before things change. incredible heat here today. tomorrow as well. st. louis could be 108 on friday. but look at bismarck in the 70s. that cooler air is going to work its way south and east.
12:19 pm
still dealing with 100s into kentucky and even around here tomorrow and especially saturday. but by the time we get towards saturday. well that's -- going to be the hottest day before things change. this afternoon, some isolated storms east throughst and we'll see what happens west and even across us through the evening hours and some popup showers or thunderstorms and with all this heat, anything that does develop could be on the strong to severe side. i think 101 for town. maybe 102. that would tie the record. yellow alert for the heat and isolated storms today and tomorrow. the lows are only going to be like 80ish in d.c. with 70s north and west? tomorrow around 100 then on saturday, that will be the hottest day. i think we can make 104. yes, 104 with the isolated afternoon storm. beyond that, we start the cool down. -- to cool down. sunday mid 90s with the chance for some storms and next week look at this. monday, tuesday and wednesday, i got highs in the 80s looks like to be a chance for storms again monday and wednesday.
12:20 pm

i took my son fishing every year. we had a great spot, not easy to find, but worth it. but with copd making it hard to breathe, i thought those days might be over. so my doctor prescribed symbicort. it helps significantly improve my lung function starting within five minutes. symbicort doesn't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. with symbicort, today i'm breathing better. and that means...fish on!
12:24 pm
symbicort is for copd including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. it should not be taken more than twice a day. symbicort may increase your risk of lung infections, osteoporosis, and some eye problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. with copd, i thought i'd miss our family tradition. now symbicort significantly improves my lung function, starting within 5 minutes. and that makes a difference in my breathing. today, we're ready for whatever swims our way. ask your doctor about symbicort. i got my first prescription free. call or click to learn more. [ male announcer ] if you can't afford your medication, astrazeneca may be able to help.
