like 102 degrees. here's a look at the risk for severe weather today. it does include the d.c. metro area in yellow, the main threats being damaging wind gusts and hail because there's a chance for some pop-up thunderstorms this evening and some of those storms could go from strong to severe. here's a look at doppler where right now in the d.c. metro area it's quiet, but up north there's a couple storms approaching baltimore. most of the activity has been south of us and to the west of us, but again we have a chance for some active weather this evening because it has been so hot and muggy. now tonight expecting partly cloudy conditions, still muggy with some isolated thunderstorms, some strong or severe, temperatures falling to the 70s. we'll talk more about the heat and bigger storms a little bit later. back to you. life just is not getting easier for people who still don't have electricity. six days without power is really taking its toll. peggy fox is live in arlington

now with more. peg? >> reporter: well, i tell you what, this neighborhood is lucky they just got their power back on. power crews from ontario left about 45 minutes ago and everybody around here had a big smile. let me tell you it's been a rough six days. a cluster of homes here on kenmore street in clarendon have had to do without. they've been using coolers and ice to keep a small amount of food cold. they've been shutting cartons during the day and opening windows at night. this woman was prepared with her battery powered radio and she borrowed electricity from a neighbor who had it to run her fan. outside crews from ontario, canada worked all day today replacing two poles that had crashed down. they were behind the homes and it took a while to get back there and replace those things. one resident used her smartphone for food.

>> i had like $9 in cash and i used all of that for gasoline because that was cash only. then i discovered my favorite starbucks over here at virginia square, they were 100% operation. i had the starbucks app and money on my phone and they were the lifesaver. they were my hero. >> reporter: so those crews from ontario went to get a bite to eat and they're headed out to the next site. make a lot more people happy tonight. i'm peggy fox reporting live in arlington, back to you. >> happiness and air conditioning go hand in hand. thanks a lot. dominion power crews are workinged an the clock to get their -- working around the clock to get their remaining 8,000 or so customers back online, surae chinn in arlington where some of the major work is being done. >> reporter: i'm at 23rd and

south penwouldy streets where nobody wants to be -- penwoody streets where nobody wants to be the last to be online. tim scotch is annoyed even though he's watching the crews working on his line in his neighborhood. a large tree that fell on the power lines intensified the frustration with the blackout. >> that's understandable. i fully figured they'd be doing that on saturday and sunday. >> reporter: scotch's mother relies on oxygen and says he may not be critical infrastructure, but their home should be a high priority. >> i'm angry more at the people at the decision making level than anyone under that. >> reporter: dominion power says not everybody can be a high priority even if you have a medical condition. they say they have a system that works and they have to stick with it. in arlington county, surae chinn, 9 news now. meanwhile in maryland the chairman of the state's public service commission said he fines it hard to believe

climate change -- finds it hard to believe climate change doesn't have something to do with those epic storms that have caused the catastrophic power failures plaguing our region. scott broom questioned film baltimore today. >> reporter: douglas bazarian doesn't claim to be a climate scientist but says this issue has become hard to ignore. >> we're in day six of the restoration after the storm that will not be named. >> reporter: that's the chairman of maryland's public service commission. when i asked him about climate change today, uncomfortable at first but then this. >> i'm not a scientist at all, but i think there's a pretty clear scientific consensus that global warming is happening. what that means in terms of policy is very complicated and not the core of what we do here. we regulate utility companies, but as a human being and a citizen, mother nature is angry. >> reporter: whatever the

weather he promised to hold pepco's feet to the fire on the response. a report from pepco to the pse is due in three weeks and regulators who fined pepco $1 million in december for poor performance will go from there. >> our post storm analysis can be and will be detailed penetrating. >> reporter: this is all happening as the public service commission is about to, get this, rule on a rate increase request for pepco of $66 million. that decision is expected july 13th in. baltimore scott broom, 9 news now. >> doug bazarian said the most recent storm with no name did more damage than hurricane irene last fall. we spent much of date crunching numbers and we'll tell you who had the fastest restoration times in our area and who was bringing up the area.

investigative reporter russ ptacek spent time a these numbers. >> pepco sent us new numbers which we haven't had a chance to review yet, but according to our analysis based on the news releases over the past few days, pepco did come in last place in our analysis day after day. they just didn't compare as well as the others. as crews fought through trees and debris, pepco didn't provide data for restorations for saturday and sunday, but according to press releases only 60% of customers were restored by monday, 80% restored tuesday and 89% restored wednesday. pepco was consistently in last place in our analysis of restoration completion when compared to potomac edison, dominion, novk and bge. as crews completed restorations novk reported 62% restored the day after the storm and 99% by the 4th , but it serves only 37,000 customers. of the big three providers in

our analysis, dominion was restoring customers faster with 95% restored by the 4th compared to pepco's 89%. the numbers anger montgomery county council president roger berliner. >> i think the numbers demonstrate that pepco is performing the worst in the state and that's just not okay and if you combine that with the fact that they are performing the worst -- >> experts will tell you you can't judge a utility simply on these restoration averages. it's just one way to look at performance, but critics say this is just one more piece of evidence stacking up against them. >> russ ptacek, thank you. thanks, gentlemen. for a silver spring family the problem is not that the power is off. the problem is that the power is on, on an energized power line which has fallen over the roof of a house and despite the risk of shock or fire, this family says they cannot get pepco's attention. bruce leshan brings us their

story. >> reporter: jared jimenez has always been a cool guy, but now pepco is getting him hot. >> you're telling me these wires are hot? >> yeah. they're hot right now. >> yeah. >> near charged. >> that's why we're so -- they're charged. >> that's why we're so upset. >> reporter: a pepco crew restored power to his silver spring neighborhood sunday. >> you're looking at a combination of the a man power supply to our house -- the main power supply to our house. this right there is the main power. be careful because it's live. >> reporter: but the crew did nothing about the electrified wires that a branch ripped down and draped across his metal gutters. >> i have been calling pepco since 10:30 on friday and they've laughed at me, hung up on me, told me they didn't have any report. >> reporter: the family called 911, but firefighters said all they could do was put up caution tape until pepco got here and shut down the power

unless, of course, the house caught fire. then the firefighter said they could do something. >> the gutter could sever right through the casing of this and it could spark out again and camp our house on fire. >> reporter: -- catch our house on fire. >> reporter: despite the tape and warnings the family is even more worried that a neighborhood child will come by and grab the wires which are just a foot or so off the ground. >> it took us two plus days to even get them to acknowledge that it was anen in. >> reporter: they blame pepco's -- an emergency. >> reporter: they blame pepco's ceo. >> it's so dangerous and nobody seems to care. >> reporter: and hope he will see this story and finally get the hotlines off their home. in silver spring bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> now pepco sent us a statement about 15 minutes ago but still seemed a little confused about what is going on on chartwell drive. the statement says the line was not energized at the time of the incident and that the wire in the customer's yard was not energized, but as you saw, it is energized now and the line

police charged a 12-year-old boy with 2nd degree murder. the victim was a 2-year-old girl, a foster child who lived with the boy and his family in ft. washington. on tuesday the father came home and found the little girl unresponsive, called 911. paramedics took her to the hospital where she of pronounced dead and yesterday -- she was pronounced dead and yesterday an autopsy showed that little girl died from being beaten to death. >> through the course of the investigation detectives learned a 12-year-old had beaten the child repeatedly. detectives developed probable cause to charge the boy based on interviews conducted with the family. >> now that boy has been sent to the cheltenham youth facility. the second district police station ins about do was evacuated after a resident -- station in bethesda was evacuated after a resident brought a grenade to the station. the fire department came and got it out of there safely.

president obama in the midst of a bus tour that will take him through two battleground political states, ohio and pennsylvania, the first stop on this betting on america tour as it's been dubbed, the small ohio manufacturing town of maumee. he made the case he's done all he can to help the economy. the president is campaigning in town with auto plants that helped him win in 2008. the white house suing the tour to announce it's filing an unfair trade complaint against china for imposing tariffs on some u.s. cars and trucks.

republican presidential hopeful mitt romney is also talking tough on china. the former massachusetts governor tells cbs news as long as he continues to talk about the economy, he will win november is his prediction. romney is expected to hammer the administration's healthcare reform law when he returns from vacation and gets back on the campaign trail. a giant sinkhole opened up on a section of highway in china and the cave-in was so large it swallowed a passing car. the depth of the pit is not known, but somebody going by said you could not see the bottom. it's believed one person was killed when that car plunged through the sinkhole. other people were able to use a fire department ladder to climb to safety. san diego county's biggest fireworks show, it was over in 15 seconds. a technical problem caused all of the 4th of july fireworks to go off at once. thousands of spectators had gathered at beaches and parks and scenic lookouts to get a

view. some people even camped out for hours to see the fireworks only to be left disappointed. fortunately no one was hurt when the fireworks misfired. >> oh, bummer. >> no kidding. >> major. >> in our area it's just been heat, heat and more heat. >> yeah. we're kind of starting off this heatwave today, got a couple more days of extreme heat. no records fell today, but we made it up to 100 degrees. you factor in the humidity. it felt like way over 100 degrees in a lot of locations. itch want to mention right now north of us in -- i want to mention right now north of us in adams, pennsylvania, franklin, pennsylvania, a severe thunderstorm until 7:15 this evening. tonight we'll have pop-up storms around the area the rest of the evening. heat advisory is in effect until 8:00, once again these areas in orange it. includes most of the d.c. metro area. i talked about how it feels like over 100. in downtown it feels like 104, manassas 102, fredericksburg

in the mid-70s. here's a look at your neck three days. it is code -- next three days. it is code yellow alert for friday, saturday and sunday because of extreme heat. look at saturday, 103, sunday 97 degrees and the chance for scattered showers and storms. some of those could be pretty big. next seven days, once the front goes through sunday and monday we cool down into the mid-80s for monday, even lower 80s for tuesday and wednesday, could see some showers also for the middle of next week and then thursday we will be also in the mid-80s. so relief is in there. we've got to wait till next week and we're keeping our eye on sunday's potential for some big storms. >> you keep us posted. the nationals or a roll, but we're talking about bryce in particular. >> yes. >> is owe a roll? >> he's on a roll in the -- on a roll? >> he's on a roll in the game but not to the all-star game. it was close, but he'll have to wait another year to become an all-star at least in the
