a aftermath. why now conserving energy? >> reporter: isn't that odd? you know, you are just getting your energy back in some neighborhoods. unfortunately the folks here don't even have power, but pepco is asking to you save energy. let's look at what folks are dealing with here. we are on the corner of thornapple and beachwood drive this. type of debris is literally scattered all throughout the neighborhood. folks are dealing with a huge headache and no air or power. crowes, working around the clock to bring power back to many neighborhoods. and as soon as the electricity comes back on, folks are cranking up the ac, doing their laundry. but pepco now warns to you

conserve the energy, because the system stressed. vees cents say -- residents say so are we. >> this right there is the main power. be careful because it is live. >> i have been calling pep co-since 10:30 friday. they have laughed at me, hung up on me, told me they didn't have a report. >> they were very respectful. unfortunately, every day i called, i got different information. >> reporter: so there are obviously communication issues and then you have this destruction that you see behind me in certain neighborhoods. weapon co-is not saying don't use your ac, they are just saying set it at 78 degrees. guess what pepco is also wanting you to pay nor for the electricity that perhaps you just got back or folks don't

even have that. more on that story coming up at 6:30 it appears dominion will meet its goal of getting just about all the customers back online by tonight. it still has 800 people without power. most of the outages are in arlington and alexandria. right now learn which local utility is the slowest at restoring power outages and yes, pepco makes the top of the list. a police involved shooting last night on lakeland road in college park, maryland. officers say at the time they were speaking to a man when shots rang out. two officers crashed while they were chasing him. more shots were fired and the police took the man into

custody. we don't know his condition so far this morning. firefighters in woodbridge, virginia are trying to figure out what sparked an apartment fire. fire gutted the fourth floor atwood bridge apartments thursday night. two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, no residents were injured. the district wants to bring some high-tech taxis to the city. the mayor showed off the new equipment. the tax says will have tv monitors, gps, even panic buttons for both the driver and the passenger. each driver will pay $500 to install the equipment and riders get a 50 kept surcharge to pay for it. jessica doyle is watching your money and the latest unemployment reports. last time they came out we

were a little disappointed. what are we expecting today? >> okay. not great not horrible. there is some reason to believe we could have an upside surprise this morning. recent reports have looked pretty good. layouts hit a 13 month low in june. the downside here, companies may not be firing a lot of people. ad psays companies added 176,000 positions in june, very strong and better than expected. the official expectations for today's big jobs report out of the labor department are tend. -- ten not great.

morning, a check of some stories making news. a florida young had -- judge had set bond for $1 million for george zimmerman. he is charged in the death of teenager trayvon martin. zimmerman claims it was self-defense. congressman jesse jackson jr. is staying in the hospital now, being treated for what his people describe as serious physical and mental ailments. there is a new tallest building in europe this morning. the london building is 1016 neat tall. >> with the heat this weekend, cool off at the pool.

how to protect your tech items. >> reporter: beachgoers slather on sunscreen. but what about your favorite gadget? >> the bench is not a very friendly place for technology. water is also an enmy of it, but also sunday can get into the ports of your devices and the seems and make them grind. >> reporter: there are a variety of cases on the market for smartphones, eread enters tablets. a simple plastic bag with a zipper or seal can also provide protection. bag that gadget before you leave home. don't remove it until returning home, to avoid contact with sunday and sunscreen. sun and hot temperatures can also damage a device. >> it is a good idea to keep the device out of the sun.

unusual delays heading down to the dulles toll road because of late clearing construction. again an unusual delay. 872, eight to ten minutes late. northbound i-95 no issues here thankfully as you come up from dale city to the beltway. right now i have a commuter alert, track work is going to affect all five metro lines this weekend. starring tonight at 10:00, no service from new carrollton to stadium armory. that will go until sunday night. but metro says to add 30 minutes or more to your travel time. no service from benington road, you need to add another 30 minutes to go through that.

in fact, as we travel throughout the onety yesterday, crews restored power to compass straight -- exasperated residents. and next week the public utilities commission considers a 66 rate increase pepco has requested. the commission says hey pepco, not so fast. >> pepco had not been maintaining its system to the level we expected. we would disallow the portion of that spending that we thought was attributable to their historic neglect. >> reporter: pepco is also asking, folks, this weekend who have their power to conserve some of the energy, because they are saying the system is stressed. as we are heading into the heat wave we are asking -- they are asking folks to keep their ac at 78 degrees. folks here this chevy chase are

welcome back. it is 6:42 and 82 degrees. if you look at the beltway here, overall, everything is cool except for right here on the west side of town, outer loop, slowing down from river road past the american legion bridge. 270 looks fine, no issues to report as you head down from frederick, down to the point where the lanes divide. it is running really smoothly right now. look at the american legion bridge -t looks much better here than it did about ten minutes ago. if you are headed to the beach, route 50 looks great. no problems heading in to annapolis. this is a great time to head out to the beach. it is going to be so hot this weekend. back over to the maps, delays
