nine she'll detail. howard bernstein has the digits. definitely cooler. we'll be in the 80s all week. got some showers and thunderstorms this morning. it's been loud overnight. the showers and storms will be with us probably for a few more hours before waning by mid- morning. let's get you going with a look outside. we've got some wetness there on the lens. temperatures 76 at reagan national. 84 by noon. again a lingering shower in a couple of spots. best chance will be south with partly sunny and 87. that will be the high for the day at 5:00 p.m. got the showers and lightning. you you see all the lightning strikes we've been watching. a lot on the delmarva now but locally we're watching quite a bit still moving across the region. north of town here through montgomery county and howard counties, prince frederick and huntingtown seeing some of that. even toward culpeper watch out. let's go to monika samtani. she's got your look at time saver traffic here at 5:00 a.m. if you're planning to head on the northbound side of the

gw parkway, after i tell you what's going on there, you may just reconsider. there was a large tree down northbound before the spout run parkway. right now there is no access from the roosevelt bridge or the memorial circle to get on to the northbound side of the gw parkway. you know what that means, especially northbound. not many options. i'm going to say that military road and i-66 are going to take a hit on the outbound side early this morning, at least until hov kicks in on 66 as well. so be aware of that. northbound gw parkway, i really think it's going to be military road that takes a hit this morning to try and get around this situation. so again if you're planning to head northbound, no access, northbound before the spout run parkway. we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge. that's fine heading to the southbound gw parkway. we'll take a quick look on the other side of town on the eastbound side of route 50 in maryland at route 197. only the right lane gets by. that's because the road buckled due to the heat.

i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic at 5:09. metro crews are trying to restore normal green line service. >> parts of the green line were shut down after friday's derailment. engineers believe a portion of the track shifted because of the summer heat. we have the latest on how things are going this morning for commuters. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. pretty extreme this weather we had this weekend and the effects on our local infrastructure, that train derailment and that expanse of the rail you were talking about happened very close to this west hyattsville stop here. we're told this morning by metro that commuters on the green line should expect a short delay, 10 to 15 minutes because they are single tracking between pg plaza and fort totten stops. we'll take a look at some video we shot over the weekend. metro investigators blamed the extreme heat as a probable cause of friday's train derailment. three cars on an inbound green

line train derailed around quarter of 5:00 in the evening. inside a tunnel. prince george's county fire and rescue responded to evacuate the riders without injury. we spoke to the chief and here's what he had to say. >> 95 fire ems folks operating on the scene, assisted in evacuating the 56 people off the train. our folks entered the tunnel from the station, physically walked up to the train, meet up with the conductor of the train, made sure they had a face to face about where the patients are. >> reporter: metro is officially calling this a, quote, heat tink. it's literally when a portion of the metal rails expand when exposed to the extreme heat and sun for a long period of time tbhoa. he -- of time. and we know on friday and saturday we had extreme temperatures. the infrastructure took a height and riders say this -- took a hit and riders say they took a hit too. we'll have reaction if them coming up at 5:30. back to you. >> thank you, delia.

gunfire in mount vernon this morning. one man is dead. police officer pulled the trigger. now fairfax county investigators are piecing together the details. officers spotted to men acting suspiciously late last night along frye road near route 1. one man ran as officers approached. police say there was some sort of fight during the pursuit and the man fired a gun at the officers. they returned fire and eventually shot and killed the suspect. neither officer was hurt in this. weather still grabbing headlines today. today the national weather service could determine whether a tornado or straight line winds caused two buildings to collapse last night in spotsylvania county, virginia. a private home and a business collapsed off lafayette boulevard and route 1. four people were taken to the hospital. two adults and to children. none of them is life threatening. three other children were treated for minor injuries on the site. here's a look at this morning's power outage numbers. pepco reports 2600 customers

without power. 1600 in montgomery county. more than 700 in prince george's county. and 200 in the district. dominion virginia has 8500 customers out statewide. almost 4,000 of them are in virginia. most of northern virginia. most are from last night's storms. if you have lots of tree branches in your yard after the recent storms, help is available if you live in montgomery county. one-time debris pickup scheduled for this wednesday. place any tree debris along one of the county's 217 snowplow routes and they'll pick it up. just make sure it doesn't block sidewalks or driveways or roads. montgomery county has already collected about 5,000 tons of debris just since the storm. 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> jessica doyle is here. a rough day on friday. >> it's going to abbusy week, too, for wall street. investors gearing up for a whole bunch of earnings reports that are set to be released. europe will be hard to ignore

when wall street really hopes to turn things around after a disappointing jobs report. in trading so far, asian stocks have been falling. the here as home the dow standing today at 12,772, dropped 124 points in trading on friday. nasdaq was off by 39 and the s&p 500 dropped by 13 points. dozens of companies are set to kick off earnings season this week but all eyes will turn to jpmorgan chase on friday. the company will post its trading losses tied to its bad hedge funds. the loss stood then at $2 billion. some estimate say it could be as high as $9 billion. not everyone want as five- star resort when they travel. maybe you'd like this place better in sweetwater, tennessee. it's called the redneck resort. don't look for a mud bath, baby. there's lots of mud for playing

good morning. 5:14 on this monday morning. we have some problems but the rain, we're not going to complain too much about it because it's helping to bring down the extreme temperatures. >> and we do need the rain. that's why we're so hot, also, the lack of rain and the dryness. a lot of folks have been woken up a little earlier than they wanted to or maybe a few times during the overnight period. here's a look at the day planner. showers and storms with us for a few more hours. as we get in toward mid- morning, things start to taper off. maybe even by 8:00 most of us aren't seeing stuff anymore.

some of the showers come out east here south of more continuesburg north of winchester. we'll head south toward virginia as well. the shenandoah valley coming into the park. there's amissville coming toward warren tun, culpeper all moving toward the east. watch out for some of this moderate to heavy rain. calvert county it's generally in the bay affecting the eastern shore. your temperatures this morning are running in the low to mid- 70s out there. so a lot more comfortable than it has been. looking outside on our on michael & son weather camera, our lens is all wet. 76 degrees with light rain being reported at reagan national. a wind out of the north, northeast at 16. a cool breeze for us relatively speaking. the humidity still way up there at 85%. the big picture, you see how the front is stretched out from east to west. that's why we're seeing the showers and storms. they will be pulling south of us here, even by noon most of it is going to be south of d.c. and less of it as well. so a yellow alert today for the morning showers and storms, 87.

>> reporter: we have good news. new information in the last half-hour. they are reporting no delays and no more single attacking in that area after that train derailment that happened not too far away from the west hyattsville stop on friday. metro says friday evening's extreme heat possibly caused a portion of an outdoor rail to expand. so when a train passed by that area just before 5:00 p.m., it derailed inside the tunnel. prince george's county fire and rescue evacuated 56 passengers. no injuries were reported. >> we did transport one customer to a hospital. she was a pregnant female. we had some people treated on scene for heat. we had a cooling station set up as well as provided water. >> it's hot and wasn't very well organized when we got to fort totten. there wasn't very much information about when the shuttle buses were going, where you were supposed to line up so there was a mass of people, everybody trying to get on the

same bus. >> i would have been on the train had i not gotten off 6 versus 5. it is a pain in the butt but i guess metro is doing what they can. >> reporter: some passengers obviously frustrated with the change in their evening commute on friday but some good news this morning we can pass along to you. no longer a delay on the green line. they were reporting a 15-minute delay but everything we're told is back up and running. we are told according to the website that crews worked all weekend long and have now repaired that portion of the track that was bowed out because of the extreme heat. good news to pass on to commuters this morning. back to you. >> delia, glad to hear it. in two hours teams of landscapers will descend on argueton national cemetery -- arlington national cemetery. they'll be taking part in the 16th annual renewal and remembrance sol deer day of --

volunteer day of service. they'll spend the day mulching, pruning, aerating and more. hundreds of people will help beautify the 600-acre cemetery. vincent gray is meeting with maryland governor martin o'malley and other officials this morning in lorton, virginia. they'll assess the progress of the chesapeake bay project. the district is working with six other states to remove the pollution in the bay after years of neglect. it's one of the biggest water pollution control projects in the history of the u.s. virginia governor bob mcdonnell will not be there. he's currently on a trade mission to ireland. notice is going out to drivers who fly by the new speed cameras in charles county, maryland. the cameras will be activated today in nine school zones but for the next 30 days drivers who exceed the speed limit by 12 miles an hour or more will get a warning. after that the warnings will be replaced by $40 tickets.

martin. egypt's fib news agency says the country's top generals are holding an emergency meeting. they're said to be discussing a surprise move by new president mohamed morsi to recall parliament. today president obama will call for a one-year extension of the bush era tax cuts. he wants them extended for people making less than $250,000 a year. the. is going to make the announcement at a white house rose garden press conference later today. house republicans want a permanent extension for everyone regardless of their income level. it is the 9th of the month. don't forget to call your buddies and remind them to do their monthly breast self- exams. if breast cancer is detected, what are your chances for a distant recurrence of the disease? will you need chemo? there's a test to answer that.

. our friend jc was diagnosed with the most common form of breast cancer. she has a lumpectomy to remove the tumor. to prevent a recurrence, she's undergoing radiation and will take the hormone drug tamoxifen but no exeem mow. her treatment plan was determined in part by a diagnostic test ordered by her surgeon. >> it's basically a d.n.a. fingerprint of their tumor. >> reporter: dr. victoria crew is jc's radiation oncologist. >> it tells us is this a type of tumor that needs some additional treatment beyond the hormone therapy in order to keep it from coming back or is this tumor one that would not refarm the chemo at all and is going to get the most benefit just from the hormone therapy. >> reporter: the test takes place on the pathology specimen taking at the time of surge ri.

kayak. the man inside thrown into the water but survived. >> people need to be aware. be careful. >> reporter: they're just the latest in great white encounters. the hot temperatures bringing them earlier but it's not the people they're after. it's the exploding sea populations that have moved closer to shore. >> sharks are going to go where their food is. >> reporter: seals are their food but shark expert ralph collier says seals are protected species so the population has exploded with about a quarter million gray seals on the eastern seaboard alone. sharks he says are not interested in hunting people. >> white sharks specifically are very curious apex predators. when they bite an individual, it's usually a test and the last to find out if anything is of interest is to take a little nibble. >> reporter: but a great white's nibble could be a deadly chomp for a human so ch
