be something you need. looking outside this morning, cloudy skies out there. we've got showers, even a couple of rumbles. 75 with just clouds on top of the hour at national. 84 by noon. mostly cloudy. still can't rule out a lingering shower or storm. this afternoon looks like the storms that move south, partly sunny conditions. a high temperature around 87 degrees. here are the showers and stornlg. you see the -- storms. you see the lightning. still heavier activity toward nedrick this morning coming out -- frederick this morning coming out of prince william. temps running in the 70s and muggy. big headache for virginia and d.c. drivers, especially if you're one of those that takes the gw parkway. good morning, everybody. i've been telling you all morning long the gw parkway is blocked northbound before the spout run parkway all due to a large tree down in the road.

i know crews are on the scene working on the situation. let's go to a couple live pictures outside and give you a perspective of what's going o. no access from the roosevelt bridge or memorial bridge to get on to the northbound gw parkway. that means 110, route 50 and military road will be heavier than normal. on the west side of town, if you're one of those that heads over to the beltway and the american legion bridge, you are going to be fine. southbound gw parkway is not affected. southbound 270 at route 109 is heavy not only because of the wet road conditions but there was a disabled vehicle in the roadway as well. we have our delia goncalves out live telling us about the situation on the green line as well. maybe metro is going to be a better idea, delia? >> reporter: it sounds like it so far. they were reporting a 15-minute delay. however, good news to pass along to commuters on the green line this morning. no delays. crews were able to repair that train derailment -- i'm sorry, they were able to repair the

portion of the track that caused the train derailment not too far away from this west hyattsville stop on friday. metro is blaming the extreme heat for expanding a portion of that rail so when the train passed by around 5:00 p.m. friday, it derailed inside the tunnel. prince george's county fire responded to the scene quickly and evacuated passengers safely. >> 95ems folks operating on the scene assisted in evacuating the 56 people from the train. our folks entered the tunnel from the station, walked down to the train, meet up with the conductor of the train, make sure they had to a face to face to know where the patients were. >> they were single tracking it fort totten and pg plaza. everything is back up and running. crews have repaired that portion of the rail.

so no major delays on metro. at least we can pass that good news along to commuters this monday morning. >> that certainly is music to a lot of people's ears because it's been really tough this morning i think as delia said. maybe metro will be a good option for you, especially with the wet road conditions. you can see how heavy northbound 95 is as well from quantico. will be off and on toward springfield and on to the beltway. i'll be back with more traffic coming up once again at 6:12. 6:03. we're following breaking news out of fairfax county. police shoot and kill a man overnight in the mount vary fan area. this all -- mount vernon area n. all happened just before midnight at frye road and route 1. two officers talking with two men they thought were acting suspiciously. one of them ran off. police chased after him. they say he pulled out a gun and fired at the officers. one of them fired back striking the man. he died at a hospital a short time later. police have not released the

victim's name nor the names of the officers voffed. whether it -- involved. when it comes to power outage numbers, a big improvement this morning compared to how bad it was last week. >> the storms that moved through yesterday and this morning didn't do too much in the way of outages, at least compared to last week. >> here's a check of the latest numbers. dominion has about 4,000 customers without power this morning. pepco has about 2,000 in the dark. potomac edison 1600. bge707. last night we were told it wasn't the fallen trees that were the problem. >> most of the equipment was struck by lightning. that's where we've seen most of the damage but we also have trees, tree limbs that have come down and broken some poles. the damage is not as widespread obviously or as catastrophic as we experienced last week. but the fredricksburg area, we are seeing some damage there with multiple broken poles. >> the worst damage is in fredricksburg in the four-mile

fork area. the national weather service is going to investigate whether or not a tornado hit there. montgomery county is helping its residents clean up their yards. it's planning a county wide pickup this wednesday. crews will visit all of the 217 snowplow routes to pick up debris left over from the storm. other areas like arlington and alexandria stopped special service but regular trash pickup will accept bundles of debris. whenever severe weather strikes our region, wusa9.com has you covered. you can always find us on your phone when the power goes out. get the latest weather forecasts and get information on contacting your power company. if a few hours a group of d.c. taxi drivers and owners are going to be protesting outside the wilson building. they're against a program to put new high-tech equipment in cabs. it would put a gps in the cab, credit card swipers, tvs in the taxis. the drivers would have to pay about $500 to put the equipment

in but they're allowed to pass along a 50 cent surcharge to each ridetory help -- rider to help pay for it. >> the changes though, really appreciated by riders. at 6:06, jessica doyle watching your money. she's looking at your commuter. >> that's because hundreds of thousands of people could be trying to get online and fail. that's right. internet providers are bracing for big problems today. the reason why? thousands of people around the country have computers that were infected by malicious software more than a year ago. and today they face the possibility of not being able to get online. internet users scanning their twitter feeds and facebook accounts on sunday were encouraged to add one quick click to check if their computers were infected with this malware. the f.b.i. began shutting down the internet servers that were set up to temporarily keep infected computers online for the past eight responsibilities. the court ordered that the agency obtained to keep the servers running expierpd and was not renewed.

if this has happened to you, your computer isn't connected to the internet, this is what you have to do today to get back online. you need to contact your internet service provider for help reconnecting to the internet and second, you want to insist on guidance to delete the malware. if not taken off, the criminal will be able to continue to control your machine. internet service providers have tried to keep victims online. comcast for example certainty out e-mails, letters and web notices to customers whose computers appeared to be infected. google today is launching a campaign worldwide called legalized love. the company says it's an effort to promote safer conditions for gay and lesbian people inside and outside of the offices in countries with antigay laws on the books. google has a history of officially supporting gay rights. so that's a move we'll see today and an official announcement. >> big corporations do that. thanks. pets and children can do more than make you pictures. a new study out of finland

of actor ernest borgnine. he passed away yesterday at 95. he won best actor oscar for his role in "marty" and he's well known for his role in the sitcom "mcheal's navy." george zimmerman is being guarded at a safehouse in central florida. he was released on bond friday. he's charged in the shooting death of tray tron martin. -- trayvon martin. if you needed another sign of just how hot it was last friday, the back tires of a u.s. airways jet sank into the tarmac at national airport. it was so hot the pavement got soft and the plane got stuck for three hours before it was towed out. >> that's amazing. when i saw that i went whoa, this is really hot. you could feel it. there was just air all around you. howard is here to tell us the air around us will give us some breathing room. >> it's kind of stuffy out.

humidity is way up. we're looking at highs in the 80s and tomorrow and wednesday right through the weekend 80s and 80s and #s on. but -- and 80s. we'll also have showers and storms. don't need the noise when you're trying to sleep but we certainly need the rain and still need the rain that's coming over the next few hours. let's start with a look at our day planner. we're expecting the showers and storms on and off for to, three hours. then -- for two, three hours. then they'll became fewer. isolated showers and storms with the best chances south of washington. 83 by noon with a high today around 87 degrees at 5:00 under partly sunny skies. north of d.c. more sunshine than south of d.c. this morning we've been watching the showers and storms moving west to east. a lot of lightning toward the delmarva. a little bit this morning up in frederick and out toward romney now here in west virginia coming out of western maryland. we'll go north first. here's fred ring. going right -- frederick. going right down east of frederick we're seeing a lot of this lightning tracking toward

point airy and damascus and northern montgomery county. we're showing you the showers toward romney. even in the winchester area toward cross junction and northern frederick county, virginia, this is going to be tracking toward charlestown perhaps and brunswick and loudoun county in the next little while. berryville, this will be on top of you. to the south heavier showers coming through fauquier and prince william. that's now moving into charles county with a little bit of lightning and thunder east of indian head. tracking toward waldorf and maybe white plains as well into charles county. temps are sticky but a lot cooler. low to mid-70s now. we'll that that with even a 69 in lleytons -- laytonsville. 72 in columbia this morning. outside on our camera, you're looking north. this is friendships heights and this is bethesda in the distance. cloudy skies. 75 degrees with a humidity of 82%. it's kind of sticky out there this morning with a northeast wind at 9 miles an hour.

on the rails. >> it's been tough for sure. i want to let you know that i've been on the phone with park police and about two or three minutes ago they told us that the gw parkway had been reopened. now they called us back and said no, it's still closed. northbound gw parkway before the spout run parkway, they've been dealing with a tree down overnight. it's been closed no a few showers now and it's -- closed for a few hours now and it's really going to be tough for you. the gw parkway north closed down. no access for the pep moral bridge and radios -- memorial bridge and roosevelt bridge. they continue to work on the big tree down across the road, gw parkway northbound. we'll go to the other side of town. no problems on 95 out of baltimore down to our beltway. if you are planning to use 270, let's take a live look on the southbound side where there's been a little bit of a problem here in rockville at route 28 or near falls road where there

crews continue to deal with a fallen tree on the gw parkway. it remains closed before the spout run parkway. that means no access to the gw parkway from the memorial bridge or roosevelt bridge. this also means very heavy traffic on your alternate routes including 110, route 50 and military road. another accident on the southbound side of the bw parkway near route 450. the left lane is blocked and up to three vehicles involved in that one. let me go to some good news on the beltway north of town. here's what it looks like at university boulevard. no issues as you leave the 95 interchange. just a bit slow toward silver spring but nothing you can't handle. i'm going to step out and tell you about marc delays several on 870. all camden trains and penn 505. coming up in my next report, around update on area roads once again at 6:43. >> thank you, monika. election day is less than four months away. president obama is talking tax cuts today. >> that's one of the things cbs this morning will be talking

line. metro is reporting no delays, no single tracking. after that heat-related train derailment that happened not too far away from this west hyattsville stop on friday. metro worked hard over the weekend to repair a portion of the metal track that wharped in the heat and in the sun friday causing a derailment just before 5:00 p.m. and then a safe evacuation of 56 passengers on boards. -- on board. >> we did transport one patient to the hospital, a pregnant female as a precaution. we had a cooling station set up and provided water. >> it was hot and not very well organized when we got to fort totten. there wasn't very much information about when the shuttle buses were going. it is a pain in the butt but,

you -- butt, you know, but i guess metro is doing what they can. > reporter: they did what they could and worked through the soaring temperatures, 10 a on saturday. they -- 10 a on saturday. they worked -- 105 on saturday. they worked through the weekend. everything is back up and running and green line service is running on a normal schedule. so some good news on this rangy monday morning for commuters. >> much cooler too, thanks. delia goncalves live in hyattsville, maryland this morning. 6:34. we continue to follow breaking news out of fairfax county right now. these are live pictures. police are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in mount vernon. the suspect in this died. just before midnight police saw to men acting suspiciously along frye road near route 1. again this is a live look at the scene. they are still there. they went to talk to two men. one of them ran off of the officers went to catch him. when they did they say the man

took out a gun and started firing. one of the officers fired back, hit the man. the suspect died a short time later. police are now looking for the second man they saw acting suspiciously in that location. as far as the shooting is concerned, neither one of the officers was hurt. all morning long howard and monika have been telling us about the thunderstorms which have been moving through today. the line which moved through yesterday afternoon left a mess behind. some of the worst damage was in fauquier county and fredricksburg, virginia. the national weather service will be investigating whether it was a tornado or funnel cloud this moved through. fortunately no reports of any serious injuries. here's a check on the latest power outages. dominion has about 4,000 customers without now we are this morning -- without power this morning. pepco has about 2,000 and potomac edison has 1600 while bge has just with 700 -- just about 700. this week the d.c. city council could put the go ahead

morning storms should be gone by lunch time. highs only in the 80s. coming up howard will tell us how long the cooler weather will stick around. this year's farm aid concert will be just a two-hour drive from the beltway. it will be helped september 22 at hershey park stadium in pennsylvania. the lineup was just released. it includes willie nelson, jofn mellencamp -- john mellencamp, jack johnson and dave matthews. the concert raises money for farmers all across the country.

out of rosslyn. no accidents from the roosevelt bridge or memorial bridge. the latest information from them is that they are working to reopen the road as we speak. so until that happens ever i'm going to say choose your alternate routes. route 110, route 50 or military road will do. on the american legion bridge on the west side of town, this has not been a problem. heading south on the gw parkway from the beltway also looks okay. this time on the southbound side of the bw parkway near route 450 where an accident blocks the right lane about three vehicles involved so watch your step as you exit the beltway trying to head south on the bw parkway. we'll end with a live look on the beltway as well here at new hampshire avenue. you've gotted slow traffic, the right side of your screen is the outer loop trying to get into silver spring with wet roads. in my next report another look at the big prict this he he picture this -- big picture this time at 6:58. wet roads definitely a part the commute if you're coming into town from north of the

hour. looking at radar this morning, it's lit up here, especially from the mason-dixon line to right across the d.c. metro region. you see the showers and the lightning and the thunder. we put the lightning on. you don't see the thunder but hear the thunder. you see some of this coming through romney. if this holding together winchester another 30 minutes. a itself lightning and -- a little lightning and thunder along 70. we see the heavier stuff moving into howard county. moderate rain across areas of eastern frederick. picking up as you get west of leesburg, purcelville, south of charles town on 340 between charles town to virginia and berryville and even toward the win chester area where we're seeing the heavier showers. in southern maryland look at this. in southern charles county coming through king george, slow spots this morning.

a muggy morning. 75 from easton and washington. tad cooler out toward cumberland and winchester with 70. a north, northeast wind at 9 and humidity way up at 82%. we'll watch the showers and storms diminish and really drift south, even by noon, maybe southern maryland, fredricksburg toward newland and reedville could see showers and storms. our weather watchers didn't see that much but they also had their triple digits over the weekend. we have showers tonight and tomorrow morning mainly south of d.c. then tomorrow we're going to be partly sunny with isolated storms well north and well south of town the way it looks, at least through lunch time. so today got the yellow alert. definitely going to slow you down this morning with the showers and storms but the sun mixes in later this afternoon. 87 for the high. 60s and 70s tonight with the

isolated showers and storms. wednesday and thursday both look relatively dry, mid- to upper 80s for highs. by the weekend rain chances return. that frontal boundary still in the neighborhood with highs in the mid- to upper 80s. mike? >> thanks, howard. we're waiting now for authorities to release the identities of three boys who drowned over the weekend on the eastern shore. authorities pulled the bodies of two 12-year-old cousins and their 8-year-old friend from marshy hope creek in federalsburg, maryland. the boys were playing basketball at a church parking lot before they disappeared yesterday morning. it's believed the boys went into the creek to cool off and that's when they drowned. a third body was recovered with the help of a dive team. charles county, maryland launches its speed camera program this morning. the cameras are posted at nine school zones. there's a 0-day warning phase. -- 30-day warning phase. speeders will get a warning in the mail if they go 12 miles an

we have showers, even a few thunderstorms out there. 75 now. isolated stuff through midday and sun mixes in this afternoon with a stray shower. not as hot. high only about 87. today is monday, july 9. here's a check on the news before you go. d.c. police are looking for suspects in three separate murders all within hours of each other this weekend. one of the killings happened along 7th street near r street northwest. 30-year-old michael edward jones died in the shooting and another man with us hurt. about 8,000 power customers in our region are still without electricity this morning. just about all were knocked off line by the storms that moved through yesterday and overnight. the biggest number of outages in frederick, maryland and fredricksburg, virginia areas. nationals relievers threw two wild pitches late in yesterday's game and the rockies scored a run on both of those. d.c. falls to the rockies. cbs this morning starts at the top of the hour.

one more thing before we go. we wanted to mention wimbledon just for a second. andy murray had the hopes of a nation and all of great britain on him yesterday. he lost to roger federer who's a phenomenal tennis player. there's a little bit of a back story. s he's from a tiny town in scotland n. 1996 there was an awful, awful mass murder in an elementary school there. 16 children were killed and a teacher. he was in the school at the time. andy was 8 years old when he was there. he obviously made it out alive and there was a lot from that little town to be sad about. so when this started to happen and he started making a charge

at wimbledon, the hopes were lifted so high for him to win and they are still very, very proud of him. the last brit to get to the finals was back in the 1930's. >> they're proud of him no matter what. did you see the standing ovation he god at the end of the match. he was crying and it was very difficult for him to lose but he's still a big winner. >> a great match. we're still dealing with some showers, a little bit of thunder here and there this morning. you see some of the brighter areas of yellow up to the north and even scattered about southern maryland right now. that will be the case for a few more hours. as we look at the seven-day forecast temperatures much more comfortable this week into the 80s with 86 on tuesday. and that cooler trend will be with us for the week. i think we'll be all right wednesday and thursday. rain chances maybe 10%, 20% but increasing a little bit toward the weekend but temperatures don't get above 90 the way it looks. we'll take that. the gw parkway northbound has been reopened before the spout run parkway.
