survived in part because of what cheer fusion's owner connie allen saw. >> then i screamed get in the dance room. >> reporter: and her quick thinking. >> i saw the funnel cloud going like this and i screamed for the kids and everybody to get in the dance room. as soon days that, it was black. it was pitch black. >> reporter: she and several parents quickly moved them from the main room to the dance room which is still standing. it's surrounded by cinderblocks. the main room's walls have large garage doors. >> that garage door went up and as soon as that garage door went up into it the whole building fell. >> reporter: there were seven people injured, two parents with serious injuries but not thought to be life threatening. >> they were just yelling everybody get in the dance room and we all ran in there. >> the house raised up and then it dropped and we fell in the floor and then the ceiling started falling infant. >> reporter: the building's roof blew into john bettis' house next-door. he and his wife who are both in their 80s were inside.

>> everybody was down over there where the dance studio is and nobody was over here and i saw his car in the yard and i knew that they were in the house. so i grabbed three boys from the parking lot and i asked them to come in here and get them out and they did. >> reporter: the bettises lost their home but they're both fine. >> all i know is they got out and that's the most important thing. he's got guardian angels. you take care, john, and you come over any time. okay, god love you, bye. >> reporter: in that cheer fusion building collapse seven people were injured, four taken to hospitals and tonight two are still hospitalized with broken bones. those are the two parents who made sure all the children got to safety. in spotsylvania county peggy fox, 9 news now. >> the good news, almost everyone who lost power last night have their lights back on. dominion virginia is down to just 812 outages compared to more than 29,000 in the height of the storm. pepco reports just 414 outages

and bge has 185 people out in prince george's county. last week pepco was public enemy no. 1 as people spent days sweltering with no power after that derecho and now some in montgomery county are pushing to part waves with the utility. >> reporter: i'm andrea mccarren in rockville where the montgomery county council president was extremely critical of pepco's recent performance. >> pepco's performance on every level was unacceptable. >> reporter: berliner says pepco needs to hire more linemen immediately. >> i've been told by numerous sources that pepco has only between 120 and 130 linemen full time. >> reporter: that makes it harder for pepco to get aid from other parts of the country. >> if you are not able to provide resources to them, then you get less in return. so we do get less crews because we have less to offer. >> reporter: storm debris

across the area serves as a reminder of what happened and what's likely to come again and so montgomery county plans to ask the state legislature for permission to seek public power elsewhere, an issue that would be ultimately decided through a referendum. andrea mccarren, 9 news now. >> meanwhile pepco asked the maryland public service commission to delay its vote on whether to allow the utility to raise rates next year. the psc was expected to announce its decision on the 4% hike by friday, but last week pepco filed a request to push back that decision so it could focus on restoring power to customers. so far we haven't heard if the public service commission will grant that request. d.c. council member mary cheh tells news she will be introducing a bill tomorrow that would force pepco to start installing some of its lines underground. >> we would place an assessment on pepco which inevitably will probably pass onto the rate pair, but still an assessment

on pep -- rate payer, but still an assessment on pepco, create a fund out which of we could begin to identify these areas and begin to underground the wires. >> don't expect any quick action on cheh's bill. tomorrow is the council's last legislative session before the summer recess. arlington national cemetery has also been hit hard in the recent storms. today clean-up crews got a helping hand from hundreds of landscapers around the nation. >> reporter: i'm kristin fisher at arlington national cemetery where there are still big trees down after that storm 10 days ago. >> some of them, three or four, were some of the older bigger trees in the cemetery that are 200, 225 years old. >> reporter: these huge trees that date back to before the civil war came crashing down on top of tombstones. >> this damage to the tree is definitely exceeded -- has definitely exceeded that from hurricane irene. >> reporter: local crews are continuing the clean-up. at least today the rest of the grounds are tended to by 400 members of the professional

jeffrey thompson, the prominent businessman, contractor and fundraiser who is already under federal investigation. harris is expected to appear in court tomorrow. you and your visitors from out of town won't be riding to the top of the washington monument any time soon. repairs might keep the landmark closed until 2014. you'll recall last year's earthquake did some significant damage. today the national park service said it's in the process of taking bids for who will do the repairs. they could take up to 18 months due to the complexity. >> the big challenge is getting skilled workers up to the highest levels of the washington monument, which is where the most severe damage occurred. >> to do their work crews will need to build scaffolding all around the monument. the price tag? right now they're looking at a cost of $15 million to fix it. tonight a horse slashed a few months ago near a fairfax county park is recovering from wounds suffered in yet another

slashing attack. the horse was cut over the weekend in a paddock on centreville road. it's the same place the horse was attacked in april. the paddock is near the frying pan park where three other horses were slashed in may. a herndon teenager was arrested last month for that attack and he is still in custody. >> could be a copycat. we just don't know, but we do need the public's help. >> detectives believe the attack took place sometime between saturday night and early sunday morning. the good news is the horse will be okay. coming up vdot alters its plan about what to charge now yore using ez pass and the change could be good -- charge you for using ez pass and the change could be good news.

lance armstrong's latest attempt to fight doping accusations denied within the last two hours a federal judge dismissing a lawsuit filed by the seven time tour de france champion. armstrong asked the judge to drop charges filed by the u.s. anti-doping agency that he had used performance enhancing drugs. he can refile his lawsuit within 20 days, but the cyclist's lawyer that said could happen as early as tomorrow. however, he faces a saturday deadline to accept sanctions from the doping agency or head to arbitration. so time is running out. efforts to modernize d.c.'s taxicabs not sitting well with all of the drivers.

today a couple dozen of them protested the proposed changes outside the wilson building in northwest. they would put gps, credit card machines and tvs in the taxis. companies would also have to retrofit cars to meet certain fuel standards. drivers say the cost of the changes would put smaller cab companies out of business. now some good news for commuters in virginia. vdot changing plans to charge a monthly fee to use an ez pass transponder. that's a lot of people. originally it planned to charge $1 per month to anyone who has a device, but now here's the deal. vdot will only charge new customers the fee. drivers who already use ez pass only face a fee if they order a new transponder for another car. >> the heatwave finally breaks, but we could be trading hot temps for showers, think we could take it. topper has got the details in his forecast coming up. >> president obama picks a fight with republicans over middle class tax cuts.

president obama positioned himself as a middle class warrior challenging congress to immediately renew bush era tax cuts only for americans who make less than $250,000 a year. >> right now our top priority has to be giving middle class families and small businesses the security they deserve. >> reporter: with mid class taxpayers around him, the president said they -- middle class taxpayers around him, the president said they could be hit with a $2,200 tax hike next year. >> that would be a big blow to working families and a drag on the entire economy. >> reporter: the president will take his push for middle class tax cuts to iowa tuesday. he will try to convince middle class voters in the battle ground state that his republican challenger mitt romney is a protector of the rich. romney blasted the president's plan calling it a massive tax increase. >> we just saw a terrible jobs report just last week and now to add a higher tax on job

creators and on small business is about the worst thing i could imagine to do. >> reporter: romney and congressional republicans say the bush era tax cuts due to expire the end of the year should be renewed for everyone. with no compromise in sight, both republicans and democrats expect to battle over taxes for the remainder of the 2012 campaign. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. this probably comes as no surprise considering last week's heatwave. the past 12 months are now officially the hottest on record for the continental u.s. according to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, noaa. its data shows the average temperature from june, 2011 through june of this year is the warmest 12 month period since 1895 when they first started keeping track of stuff like this and during the past 12 months every state in the lower 48 except washington had warmer than average temperatures. after dealing with that epic line of storms called a

derecho many people probably felt like tossing back a cold one. if that's you, alexandria's port city brewing company has a beer. it's called the derecho common from a 60-barrel batch of lager beer that fermented at a higher temperature during the five days the brewery was without power. this is a type of brew called a steam beer intentionally made that way. so once the beer is ready in august, port city will take the batch, about 120 kegs, and sell it in its own tasting room and bars around d.c. affected by the storm. derecho common, i'm thinking that's not going to be like a corona, totally different. >> that sounds pretty good, talk about making lemonade out of lemons. >> no kidding. >> 87 today, perhaps we'll start a new streak of 80s. wouldn't that be nice? >> sweet. >> let's start with a look at temperatures over the past five days. it's rare we had four consecutive days 100 or higher. we did it back in 1930 and we did it this year.

100 on both thursday and friday, 105 on saturday. we just missed tying the all time record of 106, hit 105, then 102 yesterday also for a record high. today we thought we'd put the fifth bar in yellow, a little more comfortable 87, our average high 88. so today was pretty much average. i think for the most part we'll hover around the mid- to upper 80s for a while. outside our live weather cam brought to you by michael and son, very nice outside, 84, dew point 63, come up a little, winds out of the east at 6, pressure steady of 29.93 inches of mercury, but a very nice evening for us now. we don't have any showers in the immediate metro area the next few hours. take advantage. that walk and you won't have to worry about becoming overheated for a change. satellite picture radar combined, a lot of showers on the gulf coast back through kentucky, tennessee into north central virginia where the frontal boundary is. for the most part, this is where it's going to be the focus of showers and thunderstorms the next couple

days, to not say we won't have any, but that's the real focus. we'll zoom. in we have some clouds especially d.c. south, but all the showers now down towards fredericksburg, more showers back into west virginia. we'll watch these. we have might see an isolated shower tonight but primarily south. temps nice, 82 bethesda, 81 arlington, springfield, looking at rockville 90, probably steaming that beer already, 85 college park and laurel. 78 in vienna, 77 reston, 82 sterling. that sounds nice. so here we go. staying seasonable, isolated thunderstorm possible south of town, comfortable in the burbs. you might open your windows tonight. a lot of clouds tuesday, more sunshine on wednesday. so for tonight mostly cloudy, shower or thunderstorm possible, mainly south of town, mid-60s to low 70s downtown. tomorrow morning mostly cloudy, pleasant, shower or storm possible, 60s and 70s. that's nice and by afternoon we'll call it mostly cloudy. there will be a little sun but

had it at the time of her breast cancer surgery. andrea roane has more. >> reporter: in march jc was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer. in april she had a lunch eight my to remove the tumor. -- lumpectomy to remove the tumor. now to prevent a recurrence jc is undergoing radiation and will take the hormone drug tamoxifen but no chemo. her treatment plan was determined in part by a diagnostic test ordered by her surgeon. it's called onco type dx. >> it's basically a dna fingerprint of their tumor. >> reporter: dr. victoria krug is jc's radiation oncologist. >> it tells us is this a type of tumor that needs additional treatment beyond hormone therapy to keep it from coming back oar is this tumor one that would -- or is this tumor one that would not respond to chemo at all and is going to get the most benefit just from the hormone therapy? >> reporter: the onco type dx

test takes place on the pathology specimen taken at the time of surgery. it looks at a group of genes within that sample to see how active they are. the results of the test are scored between 0 and 100. jc's score was 13. >> below 17 then you're considered in a risk category where chemotherapy would have no impact and you have a well behaved less aggressive cancer. in the mid-30s and above that's considered a high risk range where we know that chemotherapy has a significant impact on your outcome. >> reporter: onco type dx is not for every woman diagnosed with early stage invasive ductal carcinoma. it's primarily intended for those who are estrogen receptor positive, lymph node negative and post menopausal. >> there's not a one size fits all. it's very personalized and will back more and more as the field progresses. >> reporter: andrea roane, 9 news now. >> for a list of questions to ask your doctor about onco type
