tossed around when it comes to the investigation of d.c. mayor vincent gray shadow campaign. >> the latest former gray campaign aide to plead guilty admits she helped run such a campaign. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live outside the wilson building with more on the plea and its implications. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, andre that. this is by far the most severe of the allegations we've seen connected to gray's campaign. his other two former campaign aides were in court, pled guilty to small offenses compared to what we're talking about here. $650,000 that was funneled to gray's campaign. gene harris pled guilty in federal court yesterday to using that money to help get mayor gray elected. allegedly buying yard signs, t-

shirts, banners, laptops, even a p.a. system, that's what she pled guilty to in court. jeffrey thompson who allegedly written the checks but did not come up with the scheme. there's no indication that mayor gray had any knowledge of the plot. here what is -- here's what his public relations spokesperson said yesterday. >> as he relayed yesterday to "the washington post," he had no comment. >> reporter: again no comment even with the new developments? >> he had no comment as of yesterday to "the washington post." >> people don't know what to expect next. i think it's just a waiting game to see if is jeff thompson next. >> people should -- it's disturbing when it happens. >> reporter: a u.s. attorney released a statement saying this is not the only instance of corruption. it goes far beyond 2010. just how far back this

corruption goes here in d.c., that coming up at 5:30. andrea, mike, back to you. >> thanks, delia. well, a massachusetts man linked to a terror plot here in washington plans to plead guilty next week. rezwan ferdaus has agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors. they say he was plotting to fly remote controlled model planes packed with explosives and slam them into the pentagon and capitol. agents arrested him last september. investigators say the public was never in any danger in this investigation. ferdaus is expected to get a 17- year sentence. investigators are now waiting for autopsy results to confirm how a reporter from the winchester star newspaper died. the fauquier county sheriff's deputies say the death of sarah greenhalgh is being treated as a homicide. her body was found monday inside her home in upperville, virginia. the home was on fire at the time. she started renting the home about a year ago. it sits by itself in the middle

of the farm. the d.c. council is considering two proposals aimed at moving utility lines underground. council member mary cheh introduced a plan to designate underground utility districts in the city. the other proposal from council member jack evans would require pepco to come up with a feasibility plan on funding and implementing the project. the council says buried power lines would protect utility lines from future storms. pepco says burying lines would cost at least $5 billion. this may be a perfect definition to adding -- of adding insult to injury. if you live in maryland, you will get charged extra to offset the losses your power company suffered in the epic storm. the utility doesn't charge for the electricity itself. it charges a fee for delivering that power. and the companies are allowed in maryland to recoup the money they lost in the first 24 hours of the power outages. >> i wasn't aware of that.

60s and 70s to start. it's a little muggy once again but it is not raining. still some water left over in areas from yesterday evening's rain. let's talk about the day today because we are looking at a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures climbing pretty quickly into the 80s here later this morning. in fact mid-80s by lunch time. we'll see highs in the upper 80s to near 90 with an east wind at a 5 to 10 miles an hour and a slight chance of a

thunderstorm. time for monika. she's going to give us an update on the morning commute. there's accident cleanup on the northbound side of i-95 in virginia just past lorton road toward 7100 along the right side. that's what's causing this delay. in my next report i'll have details on that and other area roads at 5:18. making news now at 5:11, a flight from north carolina to italy made an emergency landing in philadelphia last night. flight 7:20 was headed from charlotte to rome when five crew members became nauseous from an odor in the cabin. the crew members were sent to the hospital for obvious vision. no word yet on -- observation. no worth yesterday on what caused the odor. thousands of protesters take the side of egypt's new president. they gathered to voice their support for recalling parliament. the president morsi recalled -- [ inaudible ] a minor's -- minors

valley and the mountains. by noon mid-80s. we'll top out in the upper 80s to near 90. yesterday we did get to 90. we should be close to that today. easterly winds at 5 to 10 miles an hour. looking at the radar this morning, it is quiet in town. south of us, well south of us once again through the carolinas, southeast and southwest virginia seeing some showers and thunderstorms. for us it's just a muggy morning. humidity high once again but we fall into the mid-60s in laytonsville. it's 68 in centreville and manassas. haymarket not reporting this morning. hopefully we'll get them back shortly. 68 from baden in southern prince george's county with a 71 in college park. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, we're in tysons corner. just starting to see light in the eastern horizon. sunrise about 35 or 0 minutes away. traffic -- or 40 minutes away. traffic flowing on the beltway and also i believe this is the toll road here. 69 degrees with a dew point giving us humidity of 87% with 73 being reported right now at

reagan national. temperatures today across the country, the real hot stuff is going to be out west of the rockies. much of the country seasonably warm. look at these temps in the south. only 84 in jackson, mississippi in july. lots of showers and storms for them. out west there is your 100. even in idaho we're over 100 degrees today. showers and storms, numerous across the south from the gulf coast and texas going back to the deep south. we had a lot of activity yesterday afternoon and evening. diminished somewhat during the overnight but still storms going pretty strong there in western north carolina this morning as that boundary is down there. not moving much. in fact, i don't expect to see much activity today although a stray storm can't be ruled out. you see the elevation, the mountainous areas are going to have a better chance than around here. tonight partly cloudy. then tomorrow again a mix of sun and clouds. looks like up in the mountains of pennsylvania much better chance we'll see something on thursday but i do think by friday a few more storms work their way toward us.

touching 90 in manassas. let's go to monika at 5:29. beach drive between broad branch and joyce street is shut down because of flooding with the storms that we had last night. you want to keep that in mind for your travel plans. on the outer loop of the beltway after connecticut avenue but before 270 you want to watch out for the accident. police are just headed that way so we'll give you lane information as soon as that comes in. let's take a look at 270 on the southbound side. not looking bad at all at route 109. maybe a little slow out of frederick. once you hit this spot, you're fine heading into germantown and rockville. this time all the way down to southern maryland. all of these corridors are great. incident free out of brandywine and accokeek, 210 to orkson hill and across the -- ox why hill and -- oxon hill and across the wilson bridge. there had been an accident in newington so it's going to be slow through. 395 still good through the 14th street bridge. another look at area roads at

5:39. our epic storm is going to be the center of conversation today at a meeting of the metropolitan washington council of governments. >> the chair of fairfax county's board of supervisors wants a regional investigation of 911 service outages. they have faulted verizon for not communicating about the problem. the backup systems at verizon's main 911 regional facility in arlington failed. and some customers couldn't get through to 911 until four days after the storms. today a special storm debris pickup starts in montgomery county. county residents can leave tree limbs along the 217 snowplow routes. just make sure the limbs and branches do not block sidewalks, driveways or the roads. you can also continue putting debris in trash cans or drop it off at the shady grove processing facility and transfer station in durwood, maryland. the 2010 d.c. mayoral campaign was corrupt based on

admissions of form -- add misses a former d.c. aide made yesterday. delia goncalves is live at the wilson building with more. the testimony was something. >> reporter: it certainly was. this is just getting bigger and bigger as this investigation continues. this now makes the third person connected to mayor gray's campaign in 2010 to plead guilty to federal violations. but this by far, mike, is the most egregious. we're talking more than $650,000 that was secretly funneled to the campaign. gene harris is 75 years old, admitted to passing that money along, but she told the court her former boss and d.c. businessman jeff thompson funded the scheme. he has not been charged but his office and his home were raided by the f.b.i.

d.c.'s u.s. attorney ron manchen says this corruption goes way back, as far back as 2001. >> the 2010 mayoral election was corrupted by massive infusion of cash and was illegally concealed from the voters of the district. >> it speaks to corruption in elections that's far beyond what anybody realized. i think it's safe to say the candidates who received these donations did not realize it could be coming from straw donors. and it's just going to take time to rebuild that trust. >> reporter: absolutely. it will take a long time to rebuild trust in the wilson building here. but the big question is how did mayor gray not know this was happening? we're talking more than $650,000. how did he not know? however, there's no indication in open court or in a document that we poured through that gray is implicated or that he had any knowledge of this plot

being carried out. and he still says no comment in regard to that. mike, back to you. >> thank you, delia. delia is live outside the wilson building this morning. arlington county police say they are following several leads in their search for a hit- and-run driver who killed a pedestrian. the victim was found about this time yesterday morning on the southbound side of route 110. investigators believe 62-year- old robert shepherd was hit while he was in the middle of the road. he is from lawrence, massachusetts. his girlfriend there had reported shepherd missing about two weeks ago. a settlement could be in the works to end a bitter dispute in woodbridge, virginia. under the possible settlement, some families would be allowed to return to their homes in the holly acres mobile park home. prince william county declared the place uninhabitable last fall after floods from tropical storm lee. ever since that the county and owner of holly acres have been fighting over the owner's efforts to rebuild. the fault line that caused

last august's earthquake in louisa county, virginia is going to be entered into the record books soon. the u.s. geological survey plans to map that fault within the next ten days and that will allow the agency to determine better the region's earthquake risk in years to come. 5:35. time for another your money report. >> consumer news time. what do we start with? >> we're talking about ticket scams. tickets to the hot summer concerts can be incredibly difficult to snag. consider this. floor seats for madonna's world tour at some venues are going for thousands of dollars each on stub hub and itself disration to get those in demand tickets can lead consumers to some pretty bad places. we're talking companies or websites where they wouldn't otherwise be doing business. you may be unfamiliar with the rules or you could respond to online classified that are often buyer beware. the national consumers league is urging ticket shoppers to avoid getting starry eyed over what looks like a great deal. here are some considerations to keep in mind before you click

that buy button. note the url before making a purchase. scammers can set up fake websites. buy tickets with a credit card for added fraud protection. be prepared for additional fees like shipping or convenience charges on top of the ticket price. and read the fine print on a ticket. if it's will call or paperless ticket, tikd holders may be required -- ticket holders may be required to present the purchasing credit card and photo i.d. for admission and can be nontransperrable. it's especially important if the tickets are a gift or purchased on behalf of someone else. also know the vendor's guarantee policy. retail sites will often replace or refund a ticket if customers receive the wrong tickets, fake tickets or if an event is canceled. you don't want to be spending hundreds of dollars on something, show up and find out it's bogus. >> it's amazing that scams are coming to my cell phone and some of my other personal devices on a daily basis. >> the stakes are high. can you imagine paying $1,000

hello. welcome back to 9news now. 5:46 on this wednesday morning. 5:46. that number 46. >> who's 46 today? >> him. >> oh. hi, howard. happy birthday. >> i should have taken the day off. weather wise, it's going to be another warm day. seasonably warm. highs upper 80s to near 90 degrees. your day planner, one thing we had yesterday, these isolated storms. they were isolated. they just hit a very populated area yesterday evening. some spots got close to 3 inches in about 3 hours. that's why we had flooding issues yesterday in the evening. 79 degrees by 9:00. by noon we'll be in the middle 80s already. as we head toward 5:00, upper 80s, near 90 for the high. there's a slight chance of a thunderstorm today, although i only think it's about 20%, 30%. looking at the radar, everything is down south of us.

this is where it was yesterday morning. in fact, even farther south than yesterday morning. temperatures have fallen into the 60s in many areas. nice. 66 in reston right now along with manassas. it's 70 in rockville. 70 in leesburg. 70 also in alexandria. columbia this morning 69. we're looking outside. here in northwest d.c., what a pretty sky on our michael & son weather camera. got good colors a few minutes after sunrise. humidity way up. it is muggy. 87%. and a northeasterly wind right about 6 miles an hour at the moment. they're going to be out of the east 5 to 10 today. normal temperatures for much of the country although look at nashville, jackson, atlanta only in the 80s thanks to all the showers and storms expected there. the big heat has now moved west from phoenix all the way up toward the interior northwest into idaho where they'll be in the low 80s in -- low00s in boise. scattered showers and storms in the rockies.

the rain has helped the situation in denver with the fires. we've got areas in texas, down through the deep south, the gulf coast, dealing with numerous showers and storms. yesterday afternoon look how many areas are seeing heavy rains. this morning a lot of the heavy rains are confined to the carolinas but you add the daytime heating and we'll pop more showers and storms, especially to the south where our future cast shows once again down in the carolinas we'll see a lot of showers and storms. here we're at 11:00. we'll head into the afternoon hours. scattered showers north and west here mid afternoon across area in pennsylvania, western maryland, stray storm near us. tomorrow i think it's drier even and friday some storms return. so the forecast not much change here. # 9 today and tomorrow. -- # 9 today and tomorrow. stray -- 8 -9d 9 today and tomorrow. by friday 90ish with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. then the heat creeps back.

powerless creatures. >> these are my friends. >> reporter: a flock of ducklings arrived on the rooftop of the newseum sometime in june. their mom flew the coup. there was about a dozen but some birds of prey found the orphans easy pickings. enter the newseum staff. they adopted the little wad letters and built them this penthouse suite. it's even equipped with a baby pool and a ramp. they dine on the scraps of senators, the castoffs of newscasters and the freedom forum folks are devoted to the ducks' survival. calls were made to wildlife agencies, but the abandoned animals apparently don't rank as a real emergency. but here at the newseum they
