. this is 9news now. district in crisis. a campaign funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars illegally into the 2010 mayoral election. now will it be the downfall of vincent gray. we have team coverage tonight. ken molestina explains what this may mean. but we begin from calls from city council members that mayor

vincent gray resigned. gary nurenberg is here with that. >> reporter: three members called on gray to resign. those declarations coming after the u.s. attorney yesterday described an illegal $650,000 shadow campaign to elect gray mayor in 2010. >> this is not the campaign that we intended to run. >> reporter: the federal investigation into his 2010 mayoral campaign disclosed a widespread pattern of illegal activity in the underground non-official campaign run by 75-year-old eugenia harris. >> whether the mayor knew or not, he is the beneficiary and he should resign. >> reporter: they elected him mayor. she's been charged with no wrongdoing by the u.s. attorney. he has no claimed wrongdoing. >> i think that's coming. i think yesterday's court proceedings certainly telegraph

there will be more coming. his campaign engaged in the largest criminal offense. >> reporter: long time gray ally marry chay also said -- mary chay also said gray should quit. >> i found him to be a good man. i can't tell you how sad i am to come to this position, but as a matter of healing the district, i think it's the step we have to take. >> reporter: a gray spokesmen wednesday said this is the kind of talk we expect from council member katania. marion barry won't say resign or don't resign. >> this is an ongoing investigation. it would be improper for me to say anything about any aspect of this case. >> reporter: no 7 renaissance from ward four -- such renaissance from ward four. >> if the mayor concentrates on his legal concerns so we can get

on with the business of government. thank you. >> reporter: do you want to be the mayor? >> what i want is a city that works. and i want a government that our residents can be proud of. >> reporter: do you want to be the mayor? he wants to be the mayor. do you expect to finish your term? >> i have no plans to do otherwise. >> thank you. >> reporter: the mayor tried to draw a distinction between his campaign and his administration which he says is not corrupt. anita. >> okay, gary. now what? what happens next? >> reporter: well, the federal investigation into that election corruption continues. the u.s. attorney making it clear yesterday that this is not over with guilty pleas in federal court, everything was law breaking. but everything changes if he is ever charged. >> gary nurenberg, thank you. the falling house of cars that has become the dc government isn't doing any favors for the state hood push. those fighting for district representation in congress agree the negative attention surrounding the city's current leadership is making their

pursuit no easier. our ken molestina continues our coverage with reaction. ken. >> reporter: yes, anita, at the center for the concerns of dc's state hood are a pair of questions. is the district's political house in order and how closely are members of congress watching all of these developments unfold. remember these images from last year? the now embattled mayor vincent gray supported the state hood push during a demonstration. he even allowed himself to get arrested and to send a message to wash ing washingtonians and many alike. >> think we have people on capitol hill that work against us. >> reporter: district shadow center michael brown has long been an advocate. he agrees a dark cloud over the administration does no good for the cause. >> i don't think it has a long-term impact.

but in the short run, they always use things against you. >> reporter: he's staying optimistic, he says. but others who favor state hood are a lot more critical. until dc can prove it is ethical about campaign and finances, congress will never entertain the thought of giving the district its own budget. >> it looks really bad with congress being here. >> i don't think it's going to go any good because of the people that live here. >> it's an image that they have issues governing themselves and it doesn't look good for the campaign for the push for statehood, especially given the republican congress is leary. >> reporter: once it blows over, the statehood battle should remain strong. >> he sounds pretty optimistic, ken. why? why does he think this won't be so damaging? >> reporter: well, according to him, what he's saying is that he hopes that members of congress will look past this in the longrun. and he says right now there are

70s. this is as cool as it's been if awhile. and we're looking at a very comfortable night. 78 as you head out to the west of town out towards alexandria. 77 in bethesda. you go up 77 in rockville. so most folks in the mid to upper 70s which is really pretty comfortable. 77 in sterling and 74234 great falls and 76 in -- 74 in great falls and 76 in beltsville. you night want to open your windows north and west of town. 64 in frederick. 66 in leesburg. downtown you're going to hold in the low 70s. not quite as comfortable. wakeup weather, 64-72 to start. 68-78 by 7:00 and by 9:00 partly cloudy skies. we'll come back and talk about the prospects for storms tomorrow afternoon and tell you when the heat rolls back in. an all out manhunt nabs a murder suspect hiding out in ohio. brandon thomas brown stabbed a man to death in frederick on

july third. the ohio police chief explains why authorities believe brown was hiding out there. >> he was originally from stubonville. they sent me the necessary information and we were able to track him down through technology and he was apprehended. >> he will be arraigned tomorrow morning. for the 3 third time, the house of representatives have voted to scrap president obama's health care reform law. >> this is a law, madam speaker, that the american people did not want when it was passed. and it remains a law that the american people do not want now. >> repealing the affordable health care act is wrong. it was wrong the first time. and it's wrong the 31st time. welcome to groundhog day in the house of representatives. >> now, the repeal effort will likely fail in the democratic controlled senate. but the vote does force lawmakers to go on record as being for or against the health

[ booing ] >> tough crowd. most members of the civil rights group support president obama. so romney had his work cut out for him going into the speech. now, romney beliefs saying focused on the -- believes staying focused on the economy can help him win and polls show the race is tightening. a new survey of voters nationwide shows romney just three points behind the president. 46-43. we're learning more tonight about exactly what happened the night prince george's county police shot a 21-year-old gunman thought to be crazed and high on

drugs. it all started just before 10:30 p.m. on lakeland road last thursday. here is what happened. all reporting to prince george's county police. police responded to reports of a man on pcp with a gun. corporal jordan swanger was the first on the scene. the officer shot at him sngs he saw him. -- as soon as he saw him. they got into a fight and the corporal dropped his gun in the ruckus. he was able to get away and took off running. the officer shot him with a tazer but it didn't even slow him down. by this time two other officers arrived to help him out. he pulled out what officers believed was a gun and pointed it at him. it turned out to be a lighter and he made a motion that looked like the pulling of a trigger. the officer looked like what they saw was a flash so they opened fire hitting him several times. unphased he got into a police

car and sped away before running into a brick wall at the mcdonald's on the route one. officers pinned the car and brought him into custody. he was treated at a hospital and is now in good condition. the officers all on paid administrative leave. that is standard when officers fire their guns. some of our viewers might have more cash in the bank right now than the city of san bernardino, california. it has become the third california city in the past two weeks to opt for bankruptcy protection. the council voted for it after learning they only have about 150,000 bucks in the bank, barely enough to make the next city payroll. the bankruptcy filing should keep san bernardino running at least for now. >> that's the idea is to construct a plan that will keep our vital services intact, but we'll have to renegotiate a lot of our obligations. >> they shouldn't have been robbing from peter to pay paul. if we can't afford stuff, we can't afford stuff.

other headlines making news tonight, a judge has ruled the only abortion clinic in the entire state of mississippi will remain open at least temporarily. a battle between viacom and direct tv has resulted in the satellite tv losing 17 channels, including comedy central and mtv. and according to a statement, jesse jackson junior is being treated foramen tall or mood -- for a mental or mood disorder. he has been on medical leave since june 10th. in tonight aet health alert, a cool new cavity fighter is being tested developed by two scientists, one from yale and one in chile. the chemical wipes out cavity causing bacteria in 60 seconds

and keeps it away. now, keep 32 is named after the 32 teeth in the human mouth and the developers think it would be a powerful addition to toothpaste, mouth washes and even a dental night gel. a local dentist we contacted about this says keep 32 is exciting, but bacteria aren't the only threat to teeth. the acid and sodas and other sources of decay are bad. too much rain too fast. many families in this area are still cleaning up from flash flooding all triggered from an intense rainstorm last night. some folks lived through the nightmare of sewage backing up in their plumbing. outside people found themselves in rain water up to their knees and drivers made the dangerous mistake of trying to navigate flooded streets. we're learning more about the people that survived the collapse last sunday. this is all that's left. it's mostly kids at a cheerleading practice when a

micro burst hit. the roof blew off and walls came down. they went into a safe room. chalk it up to having a plan in place. here are parents jamie and heath. >> we had a plan. and everybody listened to the plan. nobody argued. >> if those girls hadn't have been in there, we could have had deaths yesterday. any one of these -- these are all little girls. they could have been crushed. >> the building's owner planned to rebuild and the cheerleading group is getting offers for substitute practice places in the meantime. if you're like many americans, your boss is asking you to do more with fewer resources. hum. and to get that work done, a new study by aol shows 62% of desk jockeys skip lunch and have a quick bite to eat the cubicle. add up all of that time and you're working up an extra 16 days. when workers finally do take some of those precious vacation days, here is what they do.

the mid 60s. that's okay. pressure 30.15 inches of mercury and actually steady. winds southeast at about 10. satellite picture radar combined, all of the showers and storms down through the south. and in some cases, they actually need the rain down there. not necessarily a bad thing. that's the stationary front. the wind through here monday hasn't gotten very far. it's fun day. but it did break our heat. and now it's going to be the focus of the showers and storms. we had a couple of showers earlier this evening. and late afternoon between cumberland and hagerstown. and i think pretty much the same is going to occur tomorrow. i really think most of the storms will be west of i81. so just an isolated chance. so we're looking at a dry morning commute. okay. you'll need the sunglasses. no doubt about that. upper 80s. that's about average. shower or thunderstorm possible, but mainly west i81 and just an isolated storm or shower even at that. so overnight we're going to see partly cloudy, mild. maybe open the windows in the burbs. we're talking 64-72. that's pretty nice for mid july.
