his legal concerns so that we can get on with the business of government. >> reporter: you want to be the mayor? >> what i want is a city that works. i want a government that our residents can be proud of. thank you. >> reporter: he wants to be the mayor. you expect to finish your term? >> i have no plans to do otherwise. >> reporter: in an interesting exchange with reporters yesterday, the mayor tried to draw a distinction between his campaign and his administration which he insists is not corrupt. gary nurenberg, 9news now. >> the latest revelations of political corruption in the d.c. government are only hurting the city's push for statehood. that's according to many involved in the statehood fight. >> we have more on what this could mean for the future of washington, d.c. >> reporter: remember these images from last year? the now embattled mayor vincent gray supported the statehood push in the district during a demonstration. he even allowed himself to get arrested for the cause and send a message to washingtonians and congress alike.

now that the council and the ethics within his campaign have become highly questionable, many are concerned the fight for statehood won't be taking serious. >> i think that we have people on capitol hill that work against us and i'm sure they'll find some way to use it. >> reporter: district shadow center michael brown has long been an advocate for d.c. statewood. he believes a dark cloud over the current administration does no good for the cause. >> i don't think it has a long- term impact, but in the short run, you're -- the distracters always use things against you. >> reporter: he's staying optimistic but other washingtonians who favor statehood are a lot more critical. he says until d.c. can prove it's ethical about campaigns and finances, congress will never entertain the thought of giving district control over its own budget. >> it looks bad with congress being here when d.c. vote -- with d.c. voting rights. not going to happen easily. >> i don't think it's going to go. it's going to hurt d.c. >> it's an image that they have

trouble governing emthere was and -- themselves and doesn't look good for statehood. >> reporter: shadow senator michael brown says in the future he hopes people will look at not who washingtonians elect but who he says washingtonians have the right to elect. i'm ken molestina, 9news now. the republican controlled house of representatives has voted once again to scrap all or part of president obama's health care reform. this was the 33rd vote on this. this time the tally was 244- 185. comes two weeks after the supreme court upheld the law's constitutionality. most democrats called the vote a waste of time because the measure is certain to die in the senate but house republicans say the issue is a priority for their constituents. five democrats broke ranks and also voted to scrap the law. in campaign 2012, today vice president joe biden is scheduled to address the naacp convention in houston, texas.

yesterday g.o.p. presidential candidate mitt romney addressed the convention. it was a tough crowd for him. they booed him after he told the delegates president obama had failed to improve the economy. >> i'm going to eliminate every nonessential expensive program i can find. that includes obama care and i'm going to work to reform and save -- [ crowd booing ] >> most members of the civil rights group support president obama, so governor romney had his work cut out for him going into yesterday's speech. he believes staying focused on the economy can help him win in november. polls show the race is tightening. a new survey of voters nationwide suggests romney is just three points behind the president. 46-43% but within the statistical margin of error. illinois congressman jesse jackson, jr. is receiving what his office calls intensive medical treatment for a mood

disorder. the congressman went on leave june 10. at the time his office said he was being treated for exhaustion. they have since revised his statement to say his condition is worse than originally thought and required inpatient treatment. more details are starting to come out this morning about a shooting in college park where it was a police officers who pulled the trig gler last thursday's shooting ended with a 21-year-old suspect who was believed to be high on pcp being charged with trying to murder a police officer. anita brikman has more. >> reporter: it all started just before 10:30 p.m. on lakeland road in college park last thursday. here's what happened all according to prince george's county police. police responded to reports of a man on pcp with a gun. corporal jordan swanger was the first on the scene. the suspect shot at him almost as soon as he saw him. the bullets whizzed by hitting the squad car. they then got into a fight and the corporal dropped his gun in

the ruckus. mccoy was able to get away and took off running. the officer shot him with a taser but it didn't even slow him down. by this time two other officers arrived to help out. during the chase, mccoy pulled out what the officers believed was a gun and pointed it at them. the item turned out to be a lighter and he made the motion of what looked like the pulling of a trigger. the officers saw what looked like a flash so they opened fire hitting mccoy. unfazed he got into a police car and sped away before running into a brick wall at the mcdonald's on route 1. officers pinned the car and brought mccoy into custody. he was treated at a hospital and is now in good condition. >> the officer and two other officers are all on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. it is just about 4:37. here's a look at some of the other stories making news.

diplomatic efforts are not ending the bloodshed in syria. kofi annan wants iran to be involved in the negotiations to end the civil war. the u.s. and western nations, though, say iran is part of the problem. the united states is calling for a new government to be put in and assad to step down. how much did staffers know about the sexual abuse allegations against jerry sandusky and what did they do about it? louie freeh will release his report today. he's been investigating the details on behalf of the university. the investigators spent the last eight months interviewing more than 400 people and sifting through university e- mails. the fallout from the hazing death of florida a&m drum major robert champion continues. the president of the university resigned. champion died in november after being beaten by other band members during a hazing ritual

on a bus in orlando. san bernardino, california is the third california city in the past two weeks to opt for bankruptcy protection. the city council voted for it after learning they only have about $150,000 in the bank. that's barely enough to make the next payroll. according to the city filing, city hall is $45 million in the red. the bankruptcy filing should keep san bernardino running at least for now. time now 4:38. a cool week will give way to an even better weekend. anny is in for howard. she'll let us know what we can expect and if any rain is headed our way. millions of direct tv customers can no longer watch sponge bob, avatar or the daily show all because of a dispute with viacom. >> that's not right. i love those shows. >> one maryland community is getting rid of traffic cameras with hopes of improving road safety. >> we're back in two minutes with your weather first.

inside the beltway at 210 and livingston road. a head-on collision there. i'll have more on traffic coming up at 4:47. time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> let's talk hundreds with jessica doyle. >> i'm just going to start rolling them out. we've had kind of a bad streak on wall street. we're down to a five-day losing streak. investors lately disappointed at the latest from the federal reserve. the fed will consider additional economic stimulus if the job market gets worse. policymakers have mixed opinions on whether the economy needs more help right now. investors didn't like that. checking the numbers the dow stands at 12,604 after falling more than 48 points. the nasdaq lost more than 14 and s&p 500 was down by almost 8. more than one million homes received some sort of foreclosure filing in the first half of the year. according to realty track, that's a 2% increase from the previous six months, but it is

down from the foreclosure pace in the first half of 2011. and direct tv subscribers have lost some of their shows like sponge bob and the daily show, all of this part of a dispute with viacom. direct tv has stopped carrying 26 channels that viacom owns and this includes mtv, comedy central and nicklelodeon. the service provider says viacom is asking for a 30% increase in fees to continue the programming. obviously, you know, we're getting into a situation where the consumer is not getting the programming but does the consumer want to pay 30% more for these shows. it's a tough situation. >> it will be interesting when they figure it out because we all love some of those shows but ifer' not willing to anthe up -- ante up. thanks, jess. apparently an indicational sip of alcohol or glass of wine may be good for your bones. >> coming up the findings of a new study which says it's good for women to drink every day.

richie marlboro road after central avenue. right lane is still blocked and crews say it should be cleared up shortly. keep that in mind for your travel plans. stay to the left as you head southbound on the beltway. near the charles county line, route 210 at livingston road near berry road, southbound remains blocked. northbound has been reopened so for the rush hour at least, 210 should be okay coming up from prince george's county. so let's go over to the beltway on the oxon hillside where you're going to see that traffic is moving fine on our cameras here. oxon hill to the wilson bridge no problems here, at least on the beltway. let's go back over to our maps. there had been an overnight serious accident and that was on the inner loop right here near colesville road. i was just told that everything was cleared up but it was a fatal accident so it took a while to do that. right now things are clear. let's go over to the beltway at new hampshire avenue where there are no problems to report on the outer loop this side as you head westbound into silver spring and over to 270 you're

going to be just fine. in my next report another look at area roads at 4:55. drink up. a new study finds women who drink a moderate amount of alcohol every week can help prevent bone loss. >> presearchers say cheers. this they say can lower a woman's risk of developing osteoporosis. teresa garcia has more on the research. >> reporter: women who want to prevent osteoporosis may want to raise tear glass. a new study says drinking a moderate amount of alcohol may help prevent bone loss. >> it's better than medicine which has bad side effects. >> reporter: researchers at or gone state university studied post menopausal women who regularly had one or two drinks a day. they found when the women stopped drinking for two weeks, their rates of bone turnover when bone is lost and replaced went up. >> based on this study, alcohol reduces bone loss by reducing the turnover that is elevated following menopause. >> reporter: the body

constantly removes and replaces bone with osteoporosis more bone is lost than reformed resulting in weak bones that are more likely to break. about ten million americans have osteoporosis. older women are more affected becausest general, the hormone that keeps bone replacement in check decreases after menopause. women like 83-year-old sandra crane welcomed the study's findings. >> my friends may age have osteoporosis. it's very common. we can all use a little bit more wine. why not. >> reporter: but researchers warn not to drink too much. >> because alcohol consumption is detrimental to bone health but in this moderate range it appears to be beneficial. >> reporter: and they say eating a healthy diet and exercising will also go a long way in keeping bones healthy. >> 80% of osteoporosis patients are women. most of the women in that study drank wine. in other health news,

reducing stress could help patients with ms. researchers at northwestern studied 121ms patients and found those who took part in a weekly stress management program prevented new brain lesions from developing. brain lesions are a marker of the disease and usually form before a flare-up of symptoms like vision loss or pain. concussions appear to be increasing if college football players. walter reed national military medical center monitored the rate of concussions in three college football programs from 2009 to 2011. head injuries doubled during that time. in 2010, the national college athletic association began requiring athletic programs to report signs and stop of concussions and remove injured players from the game. new research challenges the belief that eye movement is associated with lying. you know that shifty eye? after completing three studies, british researchers say the idea that looking to the right suggests a person is lying
