here's the day planner, upper 70s by 9:00 this morning and mostly cloudy skies all day today. by noon lower 80s and by are 5:00 temperatures will be in the mid 80s. here's a look at the current conditions right now. temperature in downtown 76 but you go outside the beltway ask cooler and upper 60s in leesburg and gaithersburg. 70 manassas and 67 la plata. and martinsburg you're in the upper 60s. here's a look at your highs for today. 87 in downtown. so close to our seasonal high in the upper 80s close to 90. 84 leesburg and culpeper get to also 87 degrees, here's a look at the timesaver traffic with monika pretty in pink. thank you so much and i'm just happy it's friday and i think commuters are too. we had a rough week especially what happened yesterday. we had so many accidents all day long and this morning it's very, very calm. especially coming out from the west no problems from manassas to centreville as you head over to the beltway.

regards to details of this case. but many sources within the wilson building certainly are talking about the investigation. and have confirmed to 9news now that mayor gray immediately reached out to his personal attorney as soon as he learned about this shadow campaign. we're told the mayor was absolutely shocked when he learned back in january of this $653,000 in money that was secretly funneled to his campaign, he -- we're told had no previous knowledge of this money. though, we are also told by sources it paid a portion of the money -- a portion of the money paid for his escort vehicle that he was driven to campaign events. campaign consultant harris faces two years behind bars for her part in the scheme but says jeff thompson actually funded

the plot. >> harris wants the mayor to help her get the invoices, in other words to cover up the shadow campaign's illegal activities, gray told associates he was surprised and it's the very first time he had gotten wind of the shadow campaign. >> reporter: now, we've also learned that delegate eleanor holmes norton released a statement calling -- the latest on this case very deeply disturbing she says. that's a quote. we also have learned that the mayor has reached out to the nine refraining councilmans those who have not come out publicly and asked for his resignation and reached out to those members and asked for their support. we'll have that side of the story coming up at 5:30. mike, andrea back to you. >> all right, delia goncalves reporting live from outside the wilson building. a dispute over a spare tire leads to murder. that's what prince george's county police say happened last night in brandy wine, maryland. two men started arguing over this spare tire at a home along cross road trail when

investigators say one pulled out a gun and shot the second man. that man died and police have taken alleged shooter into custody. james dunning was found dead in his home in south carolina. he is the former sheriff of alexandria, virginia. his wife nancy dunning was killed more than eight years ago. her death remains an open homicide investigation. authorities in south carolina james dunning -- say james dunning appears to have died in his sleep and his death is not suspicious. workers at a capitol heights nail salon are accused in dealing in more than polish and acrylics. the place star nails on marlboro pike. they wrapped et up by arresting five nail technicians all charged with theft. police say the women were buying stolen merchandise and then selling it overseas things like shampoo and tide detergent. well, somewhat of a little surprise in campaign 2012. vice president joe biden got booed when he was speaking at the naacp convention in houston.

u.s. airways says it is now a creditor of the parent company american airlines. amr. u.s. airways is trying to force american into a merger. in a filing u.s. airways says it supports amr's request in bankruptcy court for more time to draft a reorganization plan. but it's also saying it could change its mind. the arm doesn't follow through on the promise to seek alternatives like a merger. stay tuned on that one. new scam warning for you this morning already thousands of americans have fallen victim to this one. you get an automated phone call from a nonexisting utility program that will supposedly pay up to $1,000 to help offset the power bills during the heat waves then victims provide their personal information. this is reportedly spreading so quickly in part because the victims are sharing the program on places like facebook and twitter. thinking they have the greatest deal ever. they want to share it with their friends and --

the 14th street bridge. and into the downtown area. all the potomac and anacostia river crossings all running incident-free. more traffic coming up once again at 5:17. back to you mike. thank you monika. here's what's making news now. syrian activists are reporting -- the worst massacre in the conflict so far. they say more than 220 people have died after syrian's mill share shelled the village of hama and independent journalists have not been able to access the area. police have cleared a delta plane bound for madrid which returned to jfk airport last night. a passenger discovered strange wiring in one of the plane's bathrooms. the pilot returned but a security check turned up no explosive devices. police, angela's police on a city wide alert now. about 200 demonstrators took to the streets during the monthly art walk downtown and at least one police officer has been

couple of degrees shy of the average high close to 90. 87 also for manassas and 85 in fredericksburg. 85 in frederick. 78 winchester. and pax river you should get close to 90-degrees. going to the bay this weekend to do some boating? well, for tomorrow partly cloudy and highs around 86 to 90 and a chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms. waves no more than a foot. sunday, hotter, 90 to 95. and a slight chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms as well. let's head farther east to the beaches for saturday, if you're going out to rehoboth, ocean city, bowie, chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon or early evening and highs 80 to 85 degrees. for sunday 82 to 86 is the high with some scattered showers and storms a better chance for that on sunday. water temperature not too bad. upper 60s in the lower 70s. your next three days today is is a green alert but saturday and sunday yellow alert because of a better chance for showers and storms especially in the

if you're thinking of heading out the door right now i think it's good to do because things are looking great outside open the beltway. all around the metro area including the north side of town no delays yet as you leave college park into silver spring. a live look outside right now. as you're planning to head over on the south side of town no problems to report across the wilson bridge and 270 looks good as well. see if we can go to the live shot, here we go here's the wilson bridge. down south across the river. back over to our maps this time we'll head over to the other side of town. no problems to report on route 50, coming in from annapolis to the beltway. and inside the beltway through cheverly both the bw parkway and route 50 are incident-free into northeast and a quick live look coming off the bay bridge on route 50 not bad at all this morning. coming up in my next report, to the west side of town in a few minutes. this afternoon the d.c. council is going to discuss a committee about the aftermath of the epic storm two weeks ago. council members are going to talk about pepco's reliability and the restoration efforts.

>> 66,000 pepco customers in the district lost power in the storms. members of the public will be allowed to submit their testimony. and people in maryland will get to voice their opinion on how their utility companies performed during recent storms. the public service commission will hold eight public hearings next month and it will accept testimonies through september 10th. after that, the pse plans to question the utilities about their response to the storm. two maryland state senators are now calling for pepco and bge to each be fined more than $100 million for the long power outages last week. senators brian frosh of montgomery county and james rosapepe of prince george's county sent the request to the public service commission. both want to use that money to create a surge reserve fund to pay for more workers to help. the lawmakers say it will encourage utilities to change their behavior and modernize infrastructure. now to more on the

investigation into d.c. mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign. when did he learn about that illegal shadow campaign that funneled hundreds of thousands into his coffers? 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live with what we know today outside the wilson building. >> reporter: good morning mike, several sources are talking about the investigation inside the building and confirming the 9news now that gray was indeed absolutely shocked when heifers learned about the secret money back in january. that was when the meeting was called and we're told gray reached out to his attorney immediately after the meeting concluded. convicted felon and campaign consultant harris called the mealing asking the mayor we're told to accept invoices for the illegal $653,000 and asked him to submit them to his campaign. essentially she was asking him to cover up the crime and he refused. the checks were signed by

businessman jefftonson who has not been charged yet but the home and office were in fact raided by the fbi. three council members asked for the resignation of the mayor but the mayor has reached out to the others asking for their support. >> i think there's an urgent need for him to make a full statement but i think the city is really crying out for that clean of clearing of the air. it should be a formally convened press conference. >> the one piece i would add right now is tokened of think of the metaphor. just kind of sit down in the boat. >> reporter: delegate holmes norton also believes the mayor should make some kind of statement in regards to the investigation. adding that it is deeply disturbing she says so who is the next campaign aide to go down by the federal authorities? we'll have that coming up at 6:00. you'll have to hear what our sources tell us. mike andrea back to you. >> thank you delia. live at the wilson building

this morning. an investigation is underway into a deadly motorcycle crash in montgomery village. rescuers arrived at east village avenue in double head road before 10:30 last night. they found an injured man on a honda motorcycle lying in the road when they got there. police determined the driver hit a curb and then hit a tree in the median. the 46-year-old man died a short time after rescuers arrived. montgomery county police are asking anyone with information about this crash to please give them a call. a d.c. police officer has been assigned to quote over duty -- other duties after making a threat against michelle obama. according to the "washington post," the officer worked as a motorcycle escort for white house officials. now the officer in question was allegedly overheard making the threat against the first lady and even showed a cell phone photo of the firearm he intended to use. we are apreaching 5:35 and it's time now for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is pack and all eyes are on -- back and all eyes are on jp morgan.

i wonder why? >> yeah. well, ceo jamie dimon is going to be speaking this morning and he's doing to be talking about just how big the trading loss disclosed back in may has grown to and what he's done the protect the bank in the future. now dimon has appeared before congress twice to explain the $2 billion trading loss. several government agencies have also -- launched investigations into jp morgan chase. some are saying the loss could be as big as $9 billion. here's some good news for you this morning. mortgage rates hit another record low this week. according to freddie mac the average rate on the 30 year fixed is down to 3.56%. those rates have matched or hit record lows in 11 out of the last 12 weeks and guess who's working on the refie right now? this girl here. >> themes up. >> you will need the monthly savings to pay for the airline ticket nowadays. the airlines reporting corporation says the price of airline tickets rose nearly 6% during the first half of the year.

and airfares from january to june are now 13% higher than just two years ago. airlines of course have been cutting flights and raising fares in an effort to be more profitable and offset the cost of oil. but even though those flights are more expensive you can save on the next trip and that's coming up in the next 30 minutes. >> okay savings is good. excellent. >> because they're charging now you to breathe in your own air. back open by monday morning. i'll be back with more traffic coming up once against at 5:48. mike? metro officials now addressing the safety issues that came up during last week's heat wave. the extreme heat caused one track to buckle derails two cars -- detrailing two cars on the groan line. another -- green line. another car lost power before they decided to basically just evacuate themselves and start walking down the tracks. the general manager says metro will take some new precautions like slowing down the trains during the heat and he also promises to keep passengers more informed. a shelter is opened at bladensburg high school for people displaced if their apartments. the buildings at river dale towers lost part of the roof weapon it hit two weeks ago. but then fire and um zeh came back out wednesday night because of a water leak and evacuated 65 apartments. county inspectors now cleared residents in 43 units to return home. people living in the other 22 that are still considered
