hello, i'm j.c. hayward. thank you for joining us. friday the 13th is living to its reputation for victims of an apartment fire this morning. flames broke out at the wood lake apartments on castle boulevard in fairland this morning.

crews from neighboring counties rushed in to help take out that blaze. armando trull is joining us new from the fairland area in montgomery county. armando? >> reporter: well jc some have already left but behind me live picture. you can see sol montgomery county firefighters putting some of the ladders away and still occasionally dousing the top of that roof with water to make sure there are no embers. it's part of the aftermath of a very rude awakening for people on this friday the 13th. the hungry flames tore through three stories of vinyl siding. >> i had to be helped over the balcony because it was too much fire. >> reporter: the garden style complex was quickly engulfed in blinding choking smoke. >> firefighters arrived very, very quickly and arrived to find heavy fire and smoke from the roar of building here. -- the rear of the building here. multiple rescues were made initially by firefighters with

the help of some police officers in the area and one sheriff's officer that was also in the area. >> reporter: more than a dozen people had to be rescued by firefighters, police officers and even other residents. >> the fire was spreading through the unit so fast they had to wait for help and when the fire department arrived they did an excellent job. >> people were ready to jump from the cool bonies and -- balcons and i systematically brought the people down from the ladder on the apartments. >> reporter: 36 apartments were destroyed -- destroyed and at least 76 people displaced. >> yeah, everything i own. >> thankful there's no serious injuries as a result of this. but i think it shows the coordinated work and the efforts of all of the people that we have and the fact that we have great people out on this team helping to assist this situation. >> reporter: the i vassuation of nearby buildings force -- evacuation of nearby buildings phil gordonned hundred of people with their children -- forced hundreds of people with

their children and pets into the street. you were looking at a live image of the rest of the clean- up. three apartment buildings were damaged here. the one in the center that one a total loss. 11 units gone and 17 people displaced. the i don'ts on either side of the apartment -- units on either side also damaged. the big problem there is that most of the power systems for those two apartment buildings are underwater and they can't begin pumping that water out until the firefighters finish dousing any possible embers that remain, reporting live i'm armando trull. jc back to you. in gaithersburg police spent the morning passing out fliers to drivers in the area about a recent sexual assault. on monday a woman was attacked by a man with a knife. this happened at the green farm conservation park on sffer road. >> this attack did occur in an isolated area in about 200 acres of parkland. the 21-year-old victim reported

to us that she was on foot. sitting on a bench, adjacent to a pond when she was attacked from behind. the suspect had a knife. he had a piece of cloth covering his face. >> the suspect has been described as a hispanic male in his late teens to early 20s and about 5'4" tall, with a strong odor of cologne. anyone with any information is urged to call montgomery county police. well, it's been two wokes -- weeks since the storm moved through our area. and new yorked out power -- knocked out power. well today d.c. city leaders are looking for answers. councilwoman yvette alexander is going to lead public oversight hearing on pep committee and the focus will be on -- pepco and if focus will be on how retable the utility is. more than 65,000 people lost power after the june 29th

storm. d.c. police officer is temporarily off the job of a he allegedly made a violent threat aimed at the first lady. the officer was overheard making comments with officers assigned is to the obamas security detail. the unidentified officer worked as a motorcycle escort for the white house. d.c. police and the secret service are investigating. well, both president obama and republican mitt romney expect a tough fight for virginia. in november. the president is headed to forth fork today and he's going -- north fork today and he's going to try to convince voters there he's the best candidate to turn the economy around. both candidates are fighting over romney's time as head of the private equity firm. danielle nottingham has more now from the white house. >> reporter: president obama is off to court voters in virginia. he's digging in for a tough battle with mitt romney in the state he won four years ago.

the president told "cbs this morning's" charlie rose romney's business record deserves further scrutiny. >> if you're a head of a large private equity firm or hedge firm your job is to make money. it's not to create jobs. >> reporter: the two campaigns are in the middle of a bitter exchange about romney's time as ceo of bain capital. romney says he left the firm in 1999 to run the olympics. but new reports suggest paperwork listed him as in charge until 2002. >> either mitt romney through his own words and his own signature was misrepresenting his position at bain to the sec which is a felony. or, he was misrepresenting his position at bain to the american people. >> reporter: romney's campaign asks the president to apologize for his staffers' comments. and they're aggressively pushing back against the president's claim that romney sent american jobs overseas. >> the obama outsourcing

jp morgan chase now says its $2 billion trading blunder was far more serious than fest reported. reported -- first reported. alison harmelin has more on the fallout for the bank and its traders. >> reporter: jp morgan chase now says the trading mistake in its london office has cost the bank $5.8 billion so far this year. that's almost triple its original estimate of the loss. ceo jamie dimon told amists

this has shaken the company to the core. traders if london managed the -- in london managed botched portfolio and were supposed to be protecting the company against risk but the strategy backfired. dimon said the managers have been dismissed without severance pay and also plans to take back two years worth of compensation from each of the executives. that includes the bank's former chief investment officer dough. jp morgan had one of the best reputations in the banking business and now working hard to repair the image. dimon told analysts we are not making light of the error but we think it's an isolated event. the company made a profit of $5 billion in the last quarter even with the losses, that was down from a year ago but still beat wall street's expectations. alison harmelin, cbs news, new york. >> that better than expected profits have boosted the stock this morning trading. coming up next, anny has

i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. we have a commuter alert for metro riders. the transit agency is going to slow down trains the next time it's extremely hot. a heat kink in the track is what caused last friday's derailment near the west hyattsville station on the green line. no one was injured but three cars jumped the tracks. metro says it had no warning about the track problems. trains were going about 55 miles an hour in that section but now -- from now on during extreme heat, the trains are going to be slowed to 35 miles an hour. and we have important information for this weekend. if you are a metro rider on the blue and yellow lines, there will be no service between pentagon city and brad rock ode. bradrockkbrad -- braddock road.

groups. >> reporter: as for jennifer even her dogs benefit from play groups. >> they love it. >> reporter: i'm sure hudson would give this vacay two paws up. in san francisco, i'm kara tsuboi, cnet.com for cbs news. >> well, it's time for another yearly ritual here in washington. i'm talking about 19th street baptist church. they're going to be holding their community-wide block party and health fair. it's tomorrow it begins at 10:00. and et continues until -- it continues until 4:00 p.m. . the church is located at 4606 16th street -- no, it's 19th street baptist church but on 16th street northwest. they will be holding free medical testing for diabetes and hiv and there's going to be a spanish interpreter there and of course they're going to have lots of games, fun and music so take the whole family tomorrow. 10:00 do 4:00. and what kind of weather will they have? >> hotter tomorrow with a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms.

so if you're going to be outside tomorrow, bring the umbrella and just in case you may have to dodge some storms. and i'm not expecting it to stick around all day though and won't ruin the entire saturday if you want to be outside. the day planner for this friday. hey a lot of clouds out there but temperatures will be pretty comfortable. given that it's july. upper 80s by 3:00 this afternoon. that will be our high. and then we'll cool down into the mid 80s just in time for denar. should be a pretty nice night to be outside on the patio having dinner. so here's a look at the doppler radar, you can see most of the showers and storms are to the west 06 town and some -- of town and some of those are trying to trickle into western maryland. we did see some earlier in the potomac highlands and central virginia but right now loyalty showers in charlestown, martinsburg and romney. and not all of this may be hitting the grounds but it's fairly light stuff. frederick, maybe starting the see some sprinkles and light rain coming through. now currently temperatures are in the 80s.

84 in downtown. 81 in manassas. head further north a little cooler 79 in leesburg and 77 in winchester and annapolis you are in the lower 80s right now and no small craft advisories for you. so here's a look at the michael & son weather camera where we've got cloudy skies out there and kind of a gray day. 84 is the current temp. dew point in the low every 70s -- lower 60s and really does actually feel nice but the humidity will increase along with the heat over the next few days. the satellite can radar showing us the storm system out to the west and because of this we may see a little bit of sprinkles or light rain or a little shower come through the area today but it's a very slight chance. better chance for some showers and storms will be tomorrow afternoon. here's a look at the futurecast. clock is up there in the corner for the afternoon generally looking at cloudy skies. west of us better chance for some showers and maybe even a couple of thunderstorms. and then overnight, may see some showers pop in especially early tomorrow morning and also in the afternoon. got a warm front coming this way. we'll also get some warmer air and temperatures will be in the

90s this weekend. and maybe even triple digits by next week. highs for today, 87 in downtown. 85 in manassas. 80s for leesburg and themself you should get to the measure annapolis you -- annapolis you should get to the mid 80s. going to the way this weekend for saturday 86 and 90 is the high. a slight chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon. sunday 90 to 95 and it does heat up. waves no more than a foot. letting farther east temperatures on saturday for ocean city. 830 to 85 with a slight chance for scattered showers and storms. sunday better chance and temperatures low to mid-80s. here's your next three days so today high upper 80s. saturday better chance for unsettled weather but hot in the lower 90s. yellow weather alert days for both saturday and sunday because of the heat and the chance for some unsettled weather. the heat on especially for monday and tuesday. all right. 94 degrees and upper 90s for tuesday and wednesday we could get to 100. we'll be right back.
